Palace: Romano drops Ebiowei claim

Crystal Palace are closing in on a move for Derby County youngster Malcolm Ebiowei, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown: Rising star

Previously on the books at Rangers, West Ham and Arsenal, Ebiowei shone in the youth ranks in the East Midlands before becoming a first-team regular.

The 18-year-old winger scored seven times and provided one assist in just eight Under-18 outings for Derby and deservedly broke into Wayne Rooney’s plans as a result during the 2021/22 campaign.

Having been pursued by Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham, it now seems as though Patrick Vieira has added yet another exciting young prospect to the Eagles’ squad…

The latest: ‘Set to sign’

Taking to Twitter, respected transfer market expert Romano has confirmed that Palace have won the race to sign the England and Holland youth international this summer.

He said: “English talent Malcolm Ebiowei won’t join Manchester United. He’s set to sign his contract with Crystal Palace after medicals completed this week, it’s a done deal. Ebiowei will leave Derby County to join Palace – contract will be valid until June 2027.”

The verdict: Another one…

Being able to beat such illustrious domestic competition to the signing makes it all the sweeter for the Selhurst Park hierarchy as the club continues to put its faith in youth under Vieira.

Ebiowei – who was branded a ‘superb talent’ by Rams journalist Jake Barker following a standout display containing two key passes and nine successful dribbles against Coventry City – joins the likes of Michael Olise, Ebere Eze and Nathan Ferguson as the east Londoners stockpile some of the country’s most prodigious young talents.

Tying down the versatile attacker to a five-year deal at Palace is undoubtedly a smart piece of business and it is clear the Eagles have a long-term vision under Vieira, adding yet another homegrown talent to an already exciting stockpile of talent.

Leeds linked with Armando Broja

Leeds United are thought to be keen on signing Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer, acceding to 90min.

The Lowdown: Broja’s Southampton loan

The Albanian is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026 and enjoyed a relatively successful loan spell with Southampton last season.

Hailed as ‘dangerous’ by Ralph Hasenhuttl, and a player with ‘incredible pace and strength’ by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, Broja contributed to 10 goals in 38 matches for the Saints.

The 20-year-old’s Transfermarkt valuation has risen to a career-high £19.8m as a result, and it looks as if he is now of interest to Leeds.

The Latest: Leeds keen on Broja

90min provided an update regarding Broja’s future on Tuesday. They claimed that West Ham, Leeds, Everton and Wolves are all keen on the forward’s signature.

The Albania international would cost in excess of £30m, which would be a club-record outlay for Leeds, although the report added that the Hammers hold an advantage due to being able to offer European football at the London Stadium.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-45/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Go for Kalimuendo instead?

While Broja certainly has talent, breaking a club record transfer fee for the second time this summer after Brenden Aaronson could be a gamble by Elland Road chiefs. The youngster netted just six Premier League goals in 32 games last season (four of those before January), one of which came against the Whites.

Victor Orta could be better off spending less on Paris Saint-Germain forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, who is the same age as Broja and enjoyed a better season in front of goal with Lens in Ligue 1, netting 12 times in the top flight.

Kalimuendo can also occupy roles on the wing or as a second striker, so Leeds could get better value for money by shopping abroad, as they have done so far this summer.

Spurs set to make Gleison Bremer offer

An update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur and their interest in signing Gleison Bremer in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to Sport Mediaset, via InterNews, Spurs are expected to submit an offer to sign the central defender as Fabio Paratici plots a bid to snap him up.

The report claims that Italian giants Inter have reached an agreement on personal terms with the player and will now compete with the Premier League side to agree a transfer fee for him.

It is stated that Torino want a figure in the region of €40m (£35m) to allow the 25-year-old to leave the club this summer.

Imagine him & Cristian Romero

By snapping the Brazilian centre-back up this summer, Tottenham can land a monstrous centre-back duo at the back with him and Romero.

He has been dubbed a “monster” by journalist Maxi Angelo and Express reporter Ryan Taylor previously called him “faultless”, as he has impressed in the Serie A in recent seasons.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Bremer averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.13 in the Italian top-flight last term as he delivered brilliant performances on a regular basis at the back.

The machine made a whopping 4.7 tackles and interceptions and 4.0 clearances per game, showing that he can consistently win the ball back for his team whilst also positioning himself well to clear danger when needed.

This came after he managed 4.1 clearances and 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game in the 2020/21 Serie A campaign, proving that he has been consistent over the course of two years.

Romero, meanwhile, averaged a score of 7.15 in his debut Premier League season. The 24-year-old made 4.3 tackles and interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game for Spurs, suggesting that he has a similar set of defensive skills to Bremer.

He also ranks in the 94th percentile in Europe’s top five leagues for blocks made with 2.44 per 90, whilst the Torino man sits in the 99th with 2.68. This shows that both of them are willing to put their body on the line for the team in matches, which the supporters will surely love.

Now, imagine both of them flying into challenges and blocks either side of Eric Dier in a back-three next season for Conte’s side. They can get fans going with their full-blooded play and give the attackers the best platform to build their play from.

Boli Bolingoli linked with Celtic exit

Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli has been linked with a potential summer move away from Parkhead.

What’s the news?

According to journalist Courtney Friday (via Reading Chronicle), English Championship club Reading are “keeping tabs” on the Belgian and his situation in Glasgow.

He tweeted (slightly erroneously as the 27-year-old is still a Celtic player): “Told Royals have been keeping tabs on former Celtic defender/midfielder Boli Bolingoli – cousin of Chelsea/Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku.”

The Hoops signed Bolingoli from Rapid Vienna in July 2019 in a deal worth a reported £3m, but with just 31 appearances for the club and two loan spells away from Glasgow (at Istanbul Basaksehir and FK Ufa), to say that the defender’s time as a Celtic player has been disappointing would be an understatement.

The full-back kicked up a storm in 2020 when he broke government protocol during the pandemic, which led to him being charged by the SFA.

Last season saw the 27-year-old make just two appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side across all competitions. He even spent time away from the club training on his own in Belgium, highlighting just how much of an outcast he has become at Parkhead.

Having seen the Bhoys recently strike a deal to bring in Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus, this would surely push the current Celtic defender even further down the pecking order.

This all suggests that his chances of playing regularly next season in the left-back position are rather slim.

Celtic fans will be buzzing

Now that it has emerged that Reading could look to sign the Hoops outcast this summer, this would surely be music to the ears of many Celtic fans, given how ineffective he’s been for the Premiership champions.

Also, bearing in mind how his current contract at Parkhead is set to expire next summer, this could be the ideal time for the club to sell him and reap some sort of transfer fee while they still can.

From the player’s point of view, if he can go to a club where he’d be playing regularly and have the chance to get his career back on track, this could be an outcome which would suit all parties.

Should Reading or any other club approach Celtic with interest in signing Bolingoli, it’s a sale that the Hoops should definitely look to complete.

West Brom in talks over Okay Yokuslu move

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly in talks to sign former loan star Okay Yokuslu this summer.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report by Joe Masi for the Express & Star, the Midlands club have held talks with the player over a potential return to the Hawthorns following the termination of his contract at Celta Vigo.

Masi’s report also adds that the midfielder has “significantly lowered his wage demands in the hope of securing a return” to West Brom.

This news will have surely come as a big surprise given how Baggies boss, Steve Bruce, only a few days ago said that the ship had probably sailed over a potential move for Yokuslu.

Speaking after the Baggies’ recent preseason win over Northampton Town, Bruce had this to say on the situation surrounding the Turkey midfielder.

“I thought the ship had sailed. However, we have got a chance. I don’t want to alert anyone else, but we have got a chance.

“We will see where that takes us over the next couple of days. If we do get him, he’s a quality player, an international footballer, who was very successful when he was here a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with him when I saw him play in the Premier League – the way he went about his work.

“He’s a top pro, people at the club enjoyed working with him. He’s experienced, he will be a very, very, good player if we can get him.”

West Brom fans will be buzzing

During his loan spell with West Brom in the second half of the 2020/21 season, Yokuslu played in 16 league games and provided one assist along the way.

In those appearances, the 28-year-old won 33 tackles and made more interceptions (42) than any other player in the squad at the time.

The midfielder also made 25 blocks, 40 clearances and 89 successful pressures, further highlighting just what he offered the side from a defensive point of view, and what he’d give Bruce’s team now.

Those impressive numbers also make it safe to suggest that many Baggies supporters will be delighted to see the club’s former loan star back in a West Brom shirt.

If Albion can get this deal over the line and bring the Turkey international back to the Midlands, this would surely not only give the squad more strength and depth in midfield but also have plenty at the Hawthorns overjoyed given how they already know what they’ll be getting from the player.

Leeds man Harrison linked with Newcastle

Leeds United could potentially lose Jack Harrison in the summer transfer window, according to a report from The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Harrison an excellent servant

The 25-year-old has been a key man for the Whites for a number of years now, helping them return to the Premier League and continuing to perform in the top flight.

Harrison has 50 goal contributions (28 goals and 22 assists) in 166 appearances for Leeds, with presenter David Brown once hailing him as a ‘joke’ of a player while Marcelo Bielsa also highlighted the versatile starlet as a ‘big’ player.

It could be that the winger moves on this summer, however, should a fresh update be believed.

The Latest: Newcastle aren’t alone…

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are keen on signing Harrison in the near future and are willing to pay £20million for his services.

It is stated that amount falls short of Leeds’ valuation, but a worrying claim suggests the Magpies are not alone, as ‘so many clubs’ are attracted to Harrison’s versatility.

The Verdict: Potential blow after Raphinha

With Raphinha officially following Kalvin Phillips out the exit door earlier in the week, losing Harrison in the same transfer window would be a big blow, even if he isn’t on the Brazilian’s level.

The Englishman has been a reliable source of end product down the years and also works relentlessly for the team, and Jesse Marsch would surely rather keep hold of him.

Harrison may not be a guaranteed regular week in, week out moving forward, especially if more summer business is done at Elland Road, but he knows Leeds inside out and losing him to another Premier League team would hurt.

Mikey Johnston urged to leave Celtic

Celtic midfielder Mikey Johnston should leave Parkhead this summer in order to become a ‘star’ man elsewhere, according to former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Johnston struggles for game-time

Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoyed a triumphant 2021/22 season, reclaiming the Premiership title, with a number of players making telling contributions.

Johnston wasn’t one of those, however, only starting three league games throughout the entire campaign and failing to register a single goal or assist.

The 23-year-old hasn’t been strongly linked with a move away recently, but one pundit believes that he may need to leave Celtic for the betterment of his career.

The Latest: McAvennie urges Johnston to consider moving

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie claimed that Johnston simply isn’t good enough to shine for the Hoops but has backed him to excel if he were to move elsewhere.

The 62-year-old said:

“He’s wanting to play and he is a good player, if he goes to another team he’ll be a star. He’s not a striker, he’s like a number ten. And Celtic already have [David] Turnbull, [Reo] Hatate and plenty of other players like that. They’ve got bundles of midfield players.

“But the decision is down to Mikey but I don’t see how he’s going to get into the team. Unless there’s so many injuries. And there will be games where he’ll be played, but do you want to be that player? I think he’s too good to be that player.

“I just don’t think he’s good enough to be in the Celtic team. He’s obviously not consistent enough or he would be in. The problems he has can all be sorted by playing more games.”

The Verdict: More likely to stay

Considering the lack of reports suggesting otherwise, it seems likely that Johnston will remain a Celtic player for the time being, although it is hard to see his squad status changing.

Postecoglou now has Champions League football to plan for and could look to sign a new attacking midfielder in order to enhance his team’s chances of thriving in Europe’s premier club competition.

That would push Johnston further down the pecking order, so it does make sense for him to consider a fresh challenge at some point in the near future, even if it isn’t this summer.

Liverpool eyeing Nico Williams signing

Liverpool are interested in signing young Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams this summer.

The Lowdown: Another winger coming in?

Jurgen Klopp has brought in three new additions in the summer transfer window, with Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay added to his squad.

There is no official confirmation that the Reds’ spending has stopped there though, and perhaps they are simply on the lookout for a more under-the-radar addition than the highly touted Jude Bellingham.

It could be that another winger is seen as an option – someone who could come in and provide backup to the likes of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz.

The Latest: Liverpool keen on Williams Jr

According to AS [via Sport Witness], Liverpool have been monitoring Williams ‘from close’ – the 20-year-old is the brother of former Reds target Inaki Williams.

It is claimed that there’s ‘no danger’ of the Reds triggering his €50million (£42.2million) release clause yet, but Bilbao ‘will have a problem’ if he continues to impress.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: One for the future

At 20, Williams Jr is still very much a work in progress as a player, possessing a rawness that is outlined by no goals or assists in 23 La Liga appearances last season.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

Spending big on him this summer would, therefore, feel like a risk, even though he has been tipped to have a ‘great future’ by former Spain Under-17s boss David Gordo and even likened himself to Kylian Mbappe, saying he dribbles ‘like Neymar’.

Williams could be one to go back in for next summer then, at a point where he is a year older and more mature as a player.

Leeds nearing Rene Maric appointment

Leeds United could appoint Rene Maric as assistant manager before the start of the season, according to reputable reporter Tim Thornton.

The lowdown: Red Bull reunion

It’s been a case of ‘stick to what you know’ so far this summer at Elland Road as Jesse Marsch has targeted familiar faces to bolster the squad, already capturing the likes of Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen.

The Whites are also now reportedly in the market for Fenerbache striker Mergim Berisha, known to the American after their time spent together at Red Bull Salzburg.

But, it’s not just on the field where Marsch is seemingly seeking continuity as the 48-year-old attempts to bring former Salzburg assistant and Borussia Dortmund first-team coach, Maric, to Thorp Arch.

The latest: ‘Could get done’

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Thornton – who works as a reporter for Sky Sports – claimed that the appointment of the 29-year-old as assistant manager could be confirmed before the 2022/23 campaign gets underway.

He said: “It’s potentially very, very exciting for Leeds. We know that Jesse has been trying to bring somebody in to work alongside him. I think there’s a good chance that he could get done before the start of the season.”

The verdict: Fingers crossed

After strong speculation linking fellow American coach Chris Armas to Yorkshire subsided, Marsch and Victor Orta will be delighted to land Maric and finally get their ducks in a row having also almost appointed Michael Skubala as head coach of the youth side.

The highly regarded Austrian has co-created a revolutionary website covering tactical and statistical analysis, Spielverlagerung, and his expertise were once called upon by Brentford and FC Midtjylland owner Matthew Benham.

Currently without a club having left Dortmund at the end of last season, Leeds should be in the clear when it comes to any potential compensation fee owed, a handy boost given the remaining time left in the transfer window to pursue possible targets.

Whether the new arrival triggers another reshuffle amongst the backroom staff for the likes of Franz Schiemer, Cameron Toshack and Mark Jackson remains to be seen, but, allowing Marsch to bring his preferred staff members in can only be viewed as a positive for the Whites moving forwards.

Leeds: Alex Crook says Saints could entertain Che Adams offers

Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Leeds United could make a move for Southampton’s Che Adams, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Adams linked with Leeds

Andrea Radrizzani has fulfilled his promise when it comes to first-team signings this summer, with the Whites forking out just under £100m so far on a number of new players.

There could still be more to come, with Victor Orta and Leeds in the market for a new centre-forward over the coming weeks. The club have missed out on primary target Charles De Ketelaere, with rumours in recent days suggesting that a shock move for Adams is on the agenda.

The Latest: Crook’s comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Crook said he has been told that Leeds still want a new forward and that a move for Adams could be ‘one to keep an eye on’, with Southampton potentially open to offers.

He stated:

“I was told they want to bring in a centre forward and I’ve been told that Southampton could be willing to listen to offers for Che Adams, who’s been on their list before.

“Whether they would meet the asking price I don’t know, but maybe that’s one to keep an eye on.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-48/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Last resort?

Phil Hay believes that a move for Adams could materialise late in the transfer window if Leeds fail to land alternative options, name-checking Paris Saint-Germain’s Arnaud Kalimuendo and Rennes’ Martin Terrier.

He may well be lower on the list and not an eye-catching name to Leeds supporters, however, he could still be a shrewd signing to challenge the likes of Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt, as you could argue that he is in the prime of his career at the age of 26.

Adams, who has been dubbed ‘amazing’ by reporter Alan Biggs in the past, has scored three times against Leeds in previous meetings and has contributed to 31 Premier League goals in 96 appearances, so bringing him to Yorkshire may be a solid piece of prospective business from the Whites.
