Celtic: Rodgers Can Instantly Unlock Yang With Swoop To Sign £6.9m Marksman

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been backed by the club since his return to Parkhead as the Northern Irish tactician has been able to make four first-team signings to date.

Who have Celtic signed this summer?

The Scottish Sun previously reported that the head coach would be given a £30m transfer budget to bolster his squad during the summer transfer window.

So far, an undisclosed chunk of that has been spent on Norwegian midfielder Odin Thiago Holm and Australia international Marco Tilio, alongside South Korean duo Kyeok-kyu Kwon and Hyun-jun Yang.

This means that Rodgers has moved swiftly to add players to his midfield options as all four of those gems either play in the middle of the park or out wide predominantly.

The Hoops could yet add a third striker to their roster to compete with Kyogo Furuhashi and Hyeon-gyu Oh and one centre-forward who has been linked with the club this year is Anastasios Douvikas, who has reportedly been valued at £6.9m.

How many goals did Anastasios Douvikas score last season?

Goals were not hard to come by for the Greek international throughout the 2022/23 campaign as he found the back of the net 19 times in 24 Eredivisie starts for FC Utrecht.

Meanwhile, Kyogo was the only Celtic player who scored more than 11 Scottish Premiership goals last season as the Japan international plundered an outstanding 27 strikes.

However, it is Douvikas' creativity that could make him an interesting signing for Celtic as Rodgers could instantly unlock new addition Hyun-jun Yang by pairing the South Korea U23 international with the Utrecht ace.

Greek international Anastasios Douvikas.

The former Gangwon star is a goalscoring winger who provides more of a threat with his ability to find the net than he does as a creator from out wide.

During the 2022 K League 1 campaign, Yang scored eight goals and created five in 33 starts.

This shows that the 21-year-old prospect has the potential to be a reliable scorer for Rodgers as only two current Hoops players – Liel Abada (ten) and Kyogo (27) – managed more than eight Premiership goals last season.

Having a striker with the ability to create opportunities for his fellow attackers could benefit the recent arrival as it would provide him with the chances he needs in front of goal to make a mark in Scotland.

Douvikas is a player who has proven himself to be capable of being that type of centre-forward as the 23-year-old forward created seven 'big chances' in 24 Eredivisie starts last term, which came after he produced seven in 28 league starts during the 2021/22 campaign.

Whereas, Kyogo created one 'big chance' in 31 Premiership starts and Oh managed one in 16 appearances after his move to the club in January.

This suggests that Douvikas would provide far more creativity from a no.9 position than any of the head coach's current options in that role.

Therefore, the "sharp" – as he was once dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting – marksman could be the perfect foil for Yang due to his knack for setting up others for 'big chances' in front of goal to give them a great opportunity to score, whilst also being able to carry a significant threat of his own.

Fabrizio Romano Shares Exciting Man City Transfer Claim

Josko Gvardiol's proposed move to Manchester City is still on, according to Fabrizio Romano.

There were rumours that everything was agreed upon, however, those appear to be wide of the mark.

Will Josko Gvardiol join Manchester City?

The Manchester club remains committed to completing a deal for the defender.

Last week, Romano stated that a deal had been agreed between both clubs for the Croatian, with the player having already completed the first part of his medical and agreed personal terms. The Italian journalist even used his trademark phrase 'Here we go'. However, since then nothing has moved forward.

Following Romano's tweet, RB Leipzig director Max Eberl stated:

"There is no agreement with Manchester City. Not even close." as well as saying: "The fact is that Manchester City would like to have him. Currently, we are still very far apart. The transfer of Szoboszlai has secured us financially. We don't need the money. We would prefer Josko to stay."

New reports now suggest that the move is close, with the reported fee set to be €100m (£86m) plus a percentage of a fee from Gvardiol’s future sale, after talks were re-opened via ‘new contacts’ who reportedly should ‘give a new acceleration’ to the transfer being completed.

Should the move be completed for the reported fee, it would make the 21-year-old the most expensive defender in football history, surpassing the £80m fee that city rivals Manchester United paid Leicester City back in 2019 for English centre-half Harry Maguire.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that the deal is "absolutely still on" with the leak earlier on having caused some problems, however the transfer is still expected to be completed:

"Let me say, from what I’m told, the deal is absolutely still on, Manchester City and Leipzig are working to complete the package for Josko Gvardiol, so the deal, whilst I’m speaking is not off and the ‘Here We Go’ remains in terms of the agreement reached one week ago, we are now waiting for the two clubs to discuss about some details because the leak created some big problems for the deal."

How will Gvardiol fit in at Manchester City?

Gvardiol would be a fantastic addition to an already incredible Man City side.

The defender was called "incredible" for his performances at the 2022 World Cup with Croatia as the nation made their second consecutive semi-final. The defender also impressed at club level, and memorably scored against City in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash last season, with his goal proving decisive in the game ending as a draw.

Over the past year, the Croatian has attempted 87.18 passes per 90 according to FBref, which ranks him in the top one percent compared to all other centre-backs in Europe's top five leagues, while he also ranks in the top 16% for pass-completion, showcasing that he will be a fine fit in the City possession and passing system.

Gvardiol would most likely come in and battle with Dutch defender Nathan Ake, who enjoyed a fantastic season last year, and when comparing the two via FBref, Gvardiol beats the former Chelsea man out in blocks, clearances, tackles, and interceptions per 90, suggesting that manager Pep Guardiola has managed to find an upgrade on a player who was very hard to upgrade, whilst also managing to find someone six years younger than his current option.

The Croatian's versatility will also be a big factor behind the move, with his ability to perform at a high level at both left back as well as centre-back giving the Citizens more options going into next season.

Cricket Australia and players finally reach pay deal

Australian cricket’s long and bitter pay dispute is over, paving the way for the Test tour of Bangladesh to proceed later this month

Brydon Coverdale03-Aug-2017Australian cricket’s long and bitter pay dispute is over, paving the way for the Test tour of Bangladesh to proceed later this month.Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland and the Australian Cricketers’ Association CEO Alistair Nicholson announced the new agreement at a joint press conference in Melbourne on Thursday afternoon. The agreement ends a 10-month negotiation process that became bitter and acrimonious as Cricket Australia sought to dramatically alter the existing pay model by which players shared in the game’s revenue.Australia’s international cricketers and many domestic players have been unemployed since July 1, after CA and the ACA failed to agree on a new Memorandum of Understanding before the expiration of the existing deal. However, those players who were out of contract will be provided with back-pay when the full MoU is completed. The agreement means Australia can honour their upcoming international commitments, including the two-Test tour of Bangladesh, a limited-overs trip to India, and the home Ashes to follow this summer. Sutherland said it was “a great shame” that Australia A’s scheduled tour of South Africa did not proceed last month, but he was pleased that no other elite cricket series had been affected.Sutherland said the deal would allow all state and international cricketers to be contracted immediately, and would mean an increase in pay that ensures Australia’s international players will be the highest-paid of all team sports in the country. The agreement also includes what Nicholson described as “the biggest pay-rise in the history of women’s sport in Australia”.”Today’s agreement is the result of a sensible compromise from both parties,” Sutherland said. “From Cricket Australia’s point of view, we needed to modernise the pay model to provide us with more flexibility to deal with issues facing the game as they come up from time to time. In this regard, the under-funding of grassroots cricket and junior cricket is our highest strategic priority.”We also wanted to introduce a gender equity pay model for women’s cricketers, so that they can also pursue a career in cricket. The ACA and Cricket Australia are delighted to be genuine market leaders in Australian sport in this regard.”This process hasn’t been easy, and history will judge whether it was all worth it in the end. Neither side has got everything that we wanted out of these negotiations, but they shouldn’t be approached with a winner-takes-all mindset.”There’s no denying that the debate itself has at times been difficult and even acrimonious. Relationships within the game have been tested, and I know that’s been a bit of a turn-off for some fans. I think I can speak for Alistair when I say that both parties acknowledge and regret that, and now it’s very much up to us to put that behind us. In announcing this agreement, we’re restoring certainty and beginning to repair relationships, especially with the fans.”I’m very confident that by the time the first ball is bowled this summer, all of this will be well and truly behind us.”Details of the new agreement include: a modernised revenue-sharing formula by which the players will receive 27.5% of forecast revenue; an increase in female player payments from $7.5 million to $55.2 million; and an adjustment ledger that allows funding for grassroots cricket if revenues exceed $1.67 billion.”It’s a very different revenue share model to what was previously the case,” Sutherland said. “It’s been modernised to allow the game more flexibility. The guarantee of player payments is formed on a certain basis. We’ve talked about bringing women’s cricketers into the pay model for the first time. Beyond that, where revenues exceed a certain level of income, it allows the grassroots of the game to share in those surpluses as well.”The new agreement includes a significant rise in women player payments, from $7.5 million to $55.2 million•Getty Images

Nicholson said the players had fought hard to retain a revenue-sharing model because they believed it had worked well in the past.”To have retained the revenue-sharing model and increased the level we have and ensure that men, women, domestic and international players receive a fair share is great news for the players and for the game,” Nicholson said. “It’s right that all players, men and women, will be partners in the game because that’s a fair outcome. It ensures a game with all parties pulling in the same direction.”Success in this negotiation for the ACA was achieving revenue sharing for all players, gender equity, fair remuneration increases, greater input on scheduling and more grassroots investment. We have achieved those things, and on that basis, we recommend to the players that the deal be accepted.”The ACA president, former Test wicketkeeper Greg Dyer, said in a statement that the agreement was ground-breaking for Australian sport”One MOU for men and women, the maintenance of the partnership model, and record investments for grassroots cricket is what we wanted and it’s what has been achieved,” Dyer said. “The men and women have been rewarded for sticking together and for having the courage of their convictions. They have made history and created a legacy for generations of players to come.”In particular, I want to acknowledge the sacrifice of the Australia A team which demonstrated the depth of the resolve of the players to support each other. We also congratulate the players who have bravely made the case in the public domain. It will be important that they are respected for having the courage of their convictions.”There is also a reality to confront. Yes, we’ve arrived at a great place but the game must never again take this same route. The players did not choose this route and did not enjoy being on it. In fact, the players resented it deeply. This was not a fight the players started. The players defended themselves as is fair and as is their right.”The acrimonious nature of the negotiations leaves Australian cricket in need of significant bridge-building in the coming months and years to repair the damage caused to relationships within the game. Sutherland said he was hopeful that both parties could put the dispute behind them.”Time will tell on that,” Sutherland said. “I’d like to think that in many ways, it’s good sport and we can all shake hands at the end of it and move on. It’s been difficult at times for lots of people, and we’ve all been dragged into the middle of it in one way or another. The important thing is to look forward … I’m really confident that those relationships will be strong. It’s our job as administrators to support the Australian players and those in state associations as well.”

Warner rates Dhaka century his best innings

Australia’s opening batsman talks of his century in Dhaka, and battling his troubles against spin in the subcontinent

Adam Collins31-Aug-2017

Mindset first, technique second. As a guiding principle, it is integral to understanding David Warner as he is today, and the secret of his Dhaka century. The working thesis is simple: if he bats with a clear mind, he sets the preconditions to be his best self at the crease. And that has always been the one that looks first to score.”I always talk about my defence taking care of itself if I am having that attacking approach,” Warner explained after the innings. “When things aren’t going my way, I’ve thought of defending rather than trying to set myself a platform looking to score. It is about trusting my game, and that is having that attacking approach with defence at the back of my mind.”I probably tinkered with it a lot over the last couple of years in these conditions and just didn’t nail the basics of what I do best – attacking and then defending.”One man in whom Warner keeps much faith is his long-term batting coach Trent Woodhill. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Woodhill elaborated on the mechanics of attack-first. “What that means to David and I is being in a position of power to be able to react to the latest possible cue from bowler, ball or pitch, which gives him the best chance to score off the ball,” he said. “Just as importantly, a chance to defend or let go with less risk. Like the set position in a race. To me, David looked to be aggressive without over-committing or being overly concerned how he looked. He was 100% committed to every ball.”The result was an innings Warner dubs the finest of his career. It is something he shares with Adam Gilchrist, who earlier this year cited a match-turning 144 he made against Bangladesh in Fatullah in 2006 as the knock he looks back on most fondly. It was doubly meaningful, given the added scrutiny on the vice-captain, entering the series without a century in the subcontinent and an average of 30 in Asia. “In a fourth innings in the subcontinent,” Warner said, “I proved to myself that I am capable of doing it on turning tracks as well with that positive mindset and energy in the legs. That’s the key to getting down the wicket, lunging forward and launching back and not getting caught in between.”That affliction, getting caught in between, has been Warner’s perennial downfall in this part of the world, and continued when he was cornered by Mehedi Hasan the first time around here. “Always in these conditions, especially for me with the new ball, I get caught on the crease,” he said with typical candour. “It’s basically about decision-making, whether to commit forward or back. That in between length – if you get out lbw or bowled – that is your own fault and there is no excuse.”This was his lot in life last August when he was toyed with by Rangana Herath and co. Then, he thought his nightmare may never end. “That probably hit me in Sri Lanka,” he recalled. “I just felt sometimes there, I was just getting beaten all the time on the inside.”It’s no coincidence that returning home from that tour, Warner took some dedicated steps to start clearing his mind of the negative energy that too often pervaded his thinking, as a batsman and a bloke. Meditation off the field and mantras when batting are now all part of the package to channel the best and discard the rest.David Warner’s wicket in the second innings in Dhaka started the collapse•Getty Images

Drawing on his own journey, he can empathise better than anyone with team-mates leaving Dhaka low on confidence, of which there are more than a few after the twin-collapses. “There are going to be times when it is going to be tough in these conditions in this environment,” he said. “I’ve been there before, it is not a great place to tour if you are not doing well, so you need the support of your friends and your team-mates. And more importantly, your family.”Not least Usman Khawaja, who he has been playing alongside for half his life. “It is almost like he has to go back to working harder on the basic stuff because he has been out of that period for a long time,” Warner said, noting Khawaja’s long break from the crease over the winter. Then, observing more broadly on the importance of successive meaningful partnerships when times are tough, he said: “You have got to dig deep in these conditions. You see the momentum swings massively. You let the opposition in, so you can never settle.”Woodhill has a more technical perspective. “Let’s take [Matt] Renshaw,” he says of his second innings lbw dismissal. “He chose to defend from the hand. Moved forward, a long way, early down the wrong line and met the ball with his pad rather than bat. If he has an aggressive approach to ensuring he hits the ball – not a carefree or high-risk approach but a high tempo – and he’s looking to score, he wouldn’t have committed as far forward, more than likely wouldn’t commit to the wrong line and the ball would strike bat, not pad.”In other words, they could do with being a bit more like Warner. With 19 centuries now in 65 Tests (as a modern reference, it took Michael Clarke 80 starts to reach that mark) there are worse starting points. “You should never go away from what you know best,” Warner concludes. “It takes time to get used to these conditions, and hopefully, my time has come now. That took probably longer than I expected, but I’ve got to keep taking the same mindset.”

Arsenal: Edu "Ready" To Bid For "Underrated" Star

Arsenal are "ready" to make an offer of "at least" €20 million (£17m) for Dinamo Zagreb defender Josip Sutalo, according to reports out of Italy.

Who will Arsenal sign?

Despite spending over £200 million on the signings of Germany international winger Kai Havertz, versatile defender Jurrien Timber and Premier League star Declan Rice, there is reason to believe supporters could expect even more fresh faces.

Havertz signed for around £65m from Chelsea, with Timber completing a £38m switch from Ajax. However, the most headline-grabbing transfer by some distance was Rice – who signed for a club-record £105 million from West Ham.

Now the most expensive English player of all time, above both Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham, manager Mikel Arteta was left absolutely thrilled by his arrival in north London.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

“We’re really happy that Declan is joining us," said Arteta.

"He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here.

“Declan has great experience in the Premier League at only 24 years old. He has captained a very good West Ham team and as we all saw, he recently lifted a European trophy. The responsibility and role he has taken on has been very impressive and we are really excited that he is joining us.”

Arsenal have displayed serious ambition this summer transfer window and are also in talks to sign Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, coming as the club seek to provide competition for Aaron Ramsdale.

The Spanish shot-stopper is perhaps Arsenal's most-talked about potential incoming right now, but according to Italian journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, they could well bid for another outfielder.

Speaking to Radio Toscana, as transcribed by fiorentinanews.com, the reporter claims Arsenal are among the sides who are ready to bid at least £17m for Sutalo of Dinamo Zagreb.

Dinamo Zagreb defender Josip Sutalo.

They are one of four clubs willing to make an offer, a list which includes the likes of Ajax, RB Leipzig and London rivals West Ham.

"For Sutalo there are 4 clubs ready to put at least 20 million for the player," said Ceccarini.

"From Leipzig to Arsenal to West Ham and Ajax. I don't think Fiorentina will want to have 5 central players in the squad, if another one arrives I think Martinez Quarta would leave. With five players in the department there would always be someone unhappy, never playing, beyond the rotations of Italian."

How good is Josip Sutalo?

The Croatian, who featured at last year's 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has impressed on-lookers with some of his performances on the international stage.

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, for instance, holds a firm belief that Sutalo is "one of the most underrated U-23 CBs in Europe."

Standing at a towering 6 foot 3, the 23-year-old seemingly has a growing reputation and may well provide solid cover to the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes – if Arsenal can get a deal done.

Stokes to offer 'full explanation' when legal process allows

Through his agent, the allrounder has acknowledged the impact the publicity has had on the game and his team-mates

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-20171:20

Stokes promises to give his story

Ben Stokes has promised a “full explanation” of what went on in Bristol on the night of his arrest for alleged Actual Bodily Harm last month, after acknowledging – via his agent – that his actions have had a negative impact on his team-mates ahead of this winter’s Ashes, as well as the ECB and the wider sport of cricket.Stokes, who was last week withdrawn from England’s Ashes squad pending further investigation into the events outside Mbargo nightclub on the morning of September 25, yesterday parted company with his bat sponsor, New Balance, a contract that is believed to be worth £200,000 a year.He also issued an apology to the British celebrity Katie Price, after being filmed appearing to mock her disabled son Harvey, an incident that generated further negative headlines on the back of the Bristol incident, in which he was shown allegedly throwing punches at two men in a street brawl. However, Stokes’s agent, the former England batsman Neil Fairbrother, has insisted that the player retains the full support of his management company, ISM, and added that the full details of what went on that night would be made public at an appropriate time, after the investigation by Avon and Somerset Police has been concluded.”Ben explained to me the full circumstances of what happened in Bristol and I told him that he has my total support and backing,” said Fairbrother in a statement. “I am aware that he has fully cooperated with the police inquiry and voluntarily provided a detailed statement on the same day as the incident. He will continue to assist the police in any way he can.”Ben will also make public his full explanation and evidence when the time is right. On legal advice, that is not possible whilst the investigation continues and no charges have been brought forward. Ben does not wish to prejudice the process.”He is also concerned about the impact the widespread publicity has on everyone involved including the ECB, his team mates and the game of cricket itself which he loves.”We will not be making any further comment relating to this at this time.”
