Liverpool: Klopp Could Solve His Robertson Issue By Signing £40m "Dominator"

Liverpool need to move fast if the prestigious Premier League outfit is to reassemble the squad to the desired level before the transfer window closes in several weeks, and bolstering the backline is surely paramount.

Who are Liverpool going to sign?

Reds sporting director Jorg Schmadtke whirred into action swiftly on Merseyside this summer, completing deals for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominick Szoboszlai to combat the mass midfield departures at Anfield.

And while more work is to be done in the centre, the defence needs a fresh face and, as such, Sporting Lisbon centre-half Goncalo Inacio has been linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool this summer.

And now, according to The Athletic, Liverpool have been 'looking at' the Portuguese titan, who is said to have a €45m (£40m) release clause in his contract.

How good is Goncalo Inacio?

Liverpool's pathway back to success is a little convoluted, but signing Inacio from Sporting Lisbon could be the game-changing acquisition to restore the Reds' trophy-winning credentials.

After falling by the wayside last season and missing out on Champions League football for the first time in seven seasons, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were released upon the expiry of their contracts, while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho compounded the problem by completing transfers to Saudi Arabian sides.

In theory, this could be the solution to the club's quandary, especially after the crux of Liverpool's remarkable breakdown last season was the midfield's inability to protect the backline and control the flow of games, powerlessness to dictate the sequences in a manner that was so intrinsic to Klopp's system until the rust started spreading last year.

To rectify this, a tactical tweak saw the system shift to move the floundering Trent Alexander-Arnold away from the right-back position – where he was exposed far too often and even branded a "training dummy" by journalist Casey Evans after being dismantled by Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. in the Champions League – and move him into midfield in possession in a sort of double-six, enhancing his incredible ball-playing skills.

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson.

While this worked impressively – the change kickstarting a superb run of form that saw seven successive league victories, before two draws to close out the season – left-back Andy Robertson has been left in the mud, struggling to perform in a new role – having seen a drop in performances during the latter phase of the term -moving him into a back-three, but with Inacio added to the ranks, such concerns could be swiftly dispelled.

The 21-year-old has made 122 appearances for the Leões, scoring 11 goals and supplying eight assists, and is considered to be perfect for Klopp's system by BBC Sports' Raj Chohan.

He said on Twitter:

"Gonçalo Inácio is the perfect counter-weight to Konaté. Inacio-VVD-Konaté: Build-up conductor. Leader/aerial dominator/switches of play. Immense recovery speed & coverage of space."

Also dubbed the "complete" centre-back by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Inacio ranks among the top 6% of central defenders across Men's 'Next Eight' divisions for pass completion, the top 1% for assists, shot-creating action and progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

goncalo-inacio-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

The two-cap international is also left-footed, meaning that he could slot into the Liverpool set-up like a tailor-made glove, providing the ball-playing ability to complement the high-octane, intense approach and allowing Alexander-Arnold to thrive in his new role.

What it would mean is Robertson would likely lose his place to the younger, dynamic man, but with Liverpool looking to compete for silverware across four competitions this year, healthy competition would only increase the prospects of success.

He would not cost any lower than the £40m fee touted, and if Liverpool do have the means to complete a deal this month, they simply have to throw the kitchen sink at Sporting Lisbon to convince one of the most precocious defensive talents of the current age to move to Anfield and don the famous Red jersey.

Liverpool: Reds Make Contact To Sign "Monster" Alongside Endo

Following the reportedly imminent arrival of Wataru Endo, Liverpool could yet welcome another midfielder to complete their rebuild in the middle of the park this summer.

The Reds have already missed out on Moises Caicedo, and potentially Romeo Lavia, continuing their search for a defensive midfielder, which has now taken them to Serie A.

Who are Liverpool signing?

Despite Manchester United reportedly being in pole position to land Sofyan Amrabat this summer, Liverpool have now made contact with Fiorentina over the conditions of a potential deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The news follows United's hesitancy to get their deal done for the midfielder, who have been linked with making a move for the Fiorentina man in the current window.

As per Romano, the Morocco international is still at the top of United's targets, with Fred's sale, alongside the potential departure of Donny van de Beek, helping to accelerate the deal.

The Manchester club's lack of urgency has seemingly opened the door for Liverpool, however, as Jurgen Klopp looks to swoop in and solve his midfield problems with Amrabat, who reportedly earns £30k per-week in Italy.

The Reds are already closing in on signing Wataru Endo, with a medical reportedly booked for Thursday, and could yet welcome one more in the middle of the park before the transfer window slams shut.

Should Liverpool sign Sofyan Amrabat?

Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat

Given the fact that Liverpool have been left without a defensive midfielder in their prime, they should be targeting Amrabat, even with United in pole position all summer long.

Welcoming the 26-year-old alongside Endo, who has plenty of experience at 30 years of age, could help balance things out in Klopp's strongest line-up.

Amrabat has received plenty of praise in the past, too, only backing his ability, with broadcaster Carlo Garganese saying during the 2022 World Cup that he's a "monster", while an opposing manager at the tournament, Spain's Luis Enrique, called the midfielder "extraordinary".

It was a tournament of high praise for the midfielder, as Morocco shocked the world to reach the semi-final stage, with even Alan Shearer having nothing but positives to say. He said, via the Liverpool Echo: "He’s been absolutely magnificent.

"I said it at the top of the show, they’re really difficult to beat and very good without the ball, and one of the reasons for that is this guy. He gives them so much protection, you can see how many tackles he’s made and he’s a huge part of their success up to now."

Statistically speaking, the Reds would also have themselves quite the upgrade on both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in certain departments. According to FBref, the Fiorentina man makes more progressive carries, has a better take-on success and a better pass completion, with 7.93 of those being progressive per 90.

Everything points to a target that Liverpool should be looking to sign amid their midfield crisis this summer. The added bonus would be stealing in and taking Manchester United's target right from under their noses, too, all whilst solving a major issue in Klopp's squad.

As the summer transfer window continues, Amrabat is certainly one to keep an eye on, as Manchester United and Liverpool potentially do battle off the pitch.

Usman Khan sidelined by stress fracture of back

The Pakistan pacer is expected to be out of action for at least six months as a result of the injury

Umar Farooq04-Nov-2017

Associated Press

Usman Khan, the Pakistan left-arm pacer, has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of the back in what is a career-threatening blow. The 23-year-old bowler, who had stunned Sri Lanka with figures of 5 for 34 in just his second ODI two weeks ago, will be out of action for at least six months as a result of the injury. He picked up the injury after second T20 against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, and missed the final game of the tour – the landmark T20 in Lahore. Medical screening confirmed lumbar-bone stress in his back. He had struggled with the same injury in the early days of his career, in 2013, after making debuting for Pakistan in T20 cricket. He has sustained back injuries twice before and missed a major chunk of season of 2014-15 as a result. “It is disappointing but this [course of treatment] will give him the best chance of recovering as quickly as possible,” Mickey Arthur, the Pakistan head coach, told ESPNcricinfo.Usman was brought into the ODI side for the Sri Lanka series after Mohammad Amir pulled out due to injury, and he made an immediate impact. His five wickets in the second game against Sri Lanka came within the space of 3.3 overs. The performance was a throwback to four years ago, at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, when he announced himself with five wickets for nine runs in 3.1 overs for Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan.Usman’s injury is the latest in a string for Pakistan. Amir recently missed the ODIs against Sri Lanka before returning for the T20 series, and Ruman Raees Babar Azam and Imad Wasim are recovering from a wrist impingement, groin strain and knee injury respectively. When asked whether he was concerned by this sudden spate of injuries, Arthur said: “A little bit, but a lot of them niggles just needed a bit of rest and that is why we have put such a lot of effort in working on our bench strength.”

Leeds Could Sign "Invaluable" £2m Nat Phillips Partner

Leeds United have endured a rough summer thus far, after a promising start saw Daniel Farke bring in some real proven quality.

However, he is now being forced to play catch-up after the mass exodus he has overseen.

Who are Leeds United signing this summer?

No less than eight of his key first-team stars have departed Elland Road this summer, with more likely to come given the ludicrous relegation release clauses inserted by the overconfident previous ownership.

Their hubris has damned the immediate future of such a fine club, with the German boss left to pick up the pieces.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Fortunately, they remain alert in the market, unwilling to remain beaten down as they scour the window for replacements.

One such option has recently emerged, with journalist Pete O'Rourke taking to Twitter to issue an update on their pursuit of a Championship star:

"Leeds United and West Brom have joined Rangers in the chase for Millwall defender Jake Cooper".

FootballTransfers value the 28-year-old stopper at €2.6m (£2m).

How good is Jake Cooper?

Left-footed centre-backs are a rare commodity nowadays, with their presence often needed to maintain balance in a back four that seeks to play out from the back.

It allows a side to have both central defenders stride out with poise, confident that they can use their favoured foot to fire balls out wide and progress the play.

Whilst Cooper does offer this, his starring assets instead sit with his defence-first nature, preferring to prevent goals above all else before he is willing to try and create.

As such, to pair the steely star with another of the Whites' long-term transfer targets for the summer, and he could form a fine partnership with Nat Phillips should Farke opt to acquire them both.

After all, they would offer that left and right-footed balance, as well as a shared ability to thunder the ball to safety on every occasion.

jake-cooper

Last season saw the Lions star feature 46 times in the Championship, as a mainstay for Gary Rowett's play-off pushing outfit.

His consistency was rewarded, as he maintained a 6.94 average rating, buoyed by his six goal contributions, 15 clean sheets, 1.2 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

He was ever-present within a defence that shipped just 50 goals in 46 games, the fourth-best in the division. It was no surprise to see him lauded by his boss Rowett:

"It was a great header and he’s scored a few of them in recent weeks. He’s been invaluable to us. I thought he was excellent today. As our captain, he gave a real leadership performance. And to cap it all with a goal that wins us the game was really nice.”

Although having missed out on regular football since his loan spell at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign, Phillips still enjoyed a fine period during that time at AFC Bournemouth, as his 7.04 average rating in the Championship was helped by his eight clean sheets alongside 1.5 interceptions and 4.1 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

So often have Leeds been plagued by defensive woes, prioritising systems that abandon security at the back. Should Farke complete this double swoop, he would add perfect balance and a pair of true stalwarts to ensure that would never be the case again.

Blackwell's unbeaten 67 powers Australia to narrow win

After a top-order wobble, the Australia vice-captain scored an unbeaten 67 to win the Ashes opener in Brisbane

A cool-headed Alex Blackwell and a fearless Ashleigh Gardner combined forces to deliver Australia a victory over England in an absorbing opening to the women’s Ashes duel in Brisbane. The pressure of the occasion, in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 4000 at Allan Border Field, was evident throughout a day where several chances went down but neither side’s batting could truly break free of a pair of disciplined bowling line-ups.England squandered a terrific top-order platform in sliding from 1 for 103 in the 23rd over to 228 all out, as Megan Schutt and Gardner made key contributions with the ball. Likewise, Australia’s pursuit of 229 for victory seemed to be drifting off course in mid-afternoon, until Garder joined Blackwell for a vital stand worth 39 from a mere 29 balls.Gardner’s innings only lasted 18 balls but featured a pair of well-struck sixes, enough to mean the hosts needed only two runs from the final over. A forthright boundary from Jess Jonassen then settled the issue, despite some typically tight bowling from Anya Shrubsole, Katherine Brunt and Alex Hartley. The ground staff at Allan Border Field worked through the night until 4.30am to get the ground ready after torrential rain for several days up to Saturday, allowing the match to start on time with Australia’s captain Rachael Haynes sending England in to bat. The hope for some early movement with the new ball was overturned by a strong start from Lauren Winfield, Tammy Beaumont and Sarah Taylor, seemingly setting the visitors up for a tall total. However, the spin duo of Gardner and Amanda Wellington were able to place a clamp on the scoring rate and push England into error – none more pivotal than the misunderstanding between the wickets that had Winfield run out after a sharp bit of fielding from Jonassen. Another key moment arrived when Natalie Sciver, who had been looking fluent, lofted Gardner towards the long-on boundary, where Elyse Villani managed to hang onto the chance while also being able to avoid stepping on the boundary rope by a matter of centimetres.England could only add another 38 runs from the remaining 45 balls of the innings, leaving Australia with a target well within range even without the batting talents of the injured Meg Lanning, who will not take part in the series. Led adroitly by Heather Knight, the tourists did not make it easy, claiming the wickets of Nicole Bolton and Alyssa Healy within five overs.Ellyse Perry seemed to be setting herself for a long stay, but was lured out of her crease by a lovely, looping and spinning delivery from Hartley, which stranded the allrounder and left Taylor to complete the stumping. When Tahlia McGrathwas taken by Winfield off Brunt with 44 balls remaining, Australia needed 48 runs with only the bowlers to accompany Blackwell, who had been fortunate to survive a dropped return catch by Hartley on 35.Gardner, though, proved herself a matchwinner, guided by the deeply experienced Blackwell – who has now played more ODIs than any other Australian woman, surpassing the ICC hall-of-famer Karen Rolton – to use her power game while the vice-captain rotated the strike. A particularly damaging two-ball sequence had Gardner clearing the backward square leg boundary by inches, before Brunt pushed the ball down the leg side and gave up five wides the next ball. While Gardner sliced a catch off Jenny Gunn with only nine runs required, and Wellington was run out from the final ball of the penultimate over, it was the partnership between the youthful offspinner and the wily vice-captain Blackwell that had turned the tide Australia’s way.
