That places the focus on the PCB, after it emerged that Salman Butt – among a handful of other former Pakistan internationals – played or were scheduled to take part in the Ajman All Stars event
ESPNcricinfo staff01-Feb-2018
Ronnie Flanagan, head of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, speaks to reporters in Lahore•AFP
There is “strong evidence” to suggest that an unsanctioned T20 event in the UAE was corrupt though the onus will now likely fall on member boards to take action against any players who may have participated in it. That places the focus on the PCB, after it emerged that Salman Butt – among a handful of other former Pakistan internationals – played or were scheduled to take part in the Ajman All Stars event. The tournament was a private one, unapproved by the ICC and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), and because it falls outside their jurisdiction the two bodies, according to the ICC, cannot take action under anti-corruption codes “against anybody who may have engaged in any corrupt practice”. But the game’s governing body will continue to investigate and try to shed light on the organisers of the event.”After speaking to a number of those involved, we consider there to be strong evidence to indicate this was a corrupt event and damaging to the wider reputation of cricket and as such will continue the investigation,” the ICC said in a statement. “Our ongoing enquiries will now focus on identifying the organisers of the tournament to prevent similar incidents occurring elsewhere and to disrupt corrupt practices wherever we can.” This is the second statement the ICC have released in a matter of days on the subject – unusual not only because the event does not lie within the confines of formal, approved cricket, but also because the governing body’s policy on its corruption investigations has hitherto been to say as little as possible publicly. The ICC took notice after a video of one particular match – broadcast by Neo Sports – went viral in which batsmen appeared to be trying their best to get dismissed. The tournament involved expatriates from a number of South Asian countries and a few former international players. One of the former internationals involved was 35-year-old Hasan Raza, a one-time Pakistan international who now lives in the UAE. He told the that he played the first game of the tournament before walking away when he saw the suspicious nature of the cricket on display.”I played in the first opening match and I was told it was a friendly game, but after the second match I was shocked at the tournament,” Raza said. “This is the first time I’ve seen something like this in Ajman. The first match was fine. The second match was a night match. I knew there was something wrong. It felt different. It didn’t feel like an organised tournament and there were many dropped catches. I understood it was not a proper match. On the third day I just walked out.”Nobody approached me. The youngsters said people came to them. I don’t know if they offered money. Maybe they tried to put them under pressure. These are young, Twenty- to 22-year-old players. They came to me. They said they were told, ‘Lose your wicket, drop your catch’. Those are the things they were told and what they told me. I told them to play their own game, their natural game, and I told them not to listen to anybody.”Raza was one of a few former internationals from Pakistan – perhaps as many as four – but there is no suggestion that any of them might be implicated. The ICC has, however, asked member boards to consider whether by dint of their participation they may be in breach.”All Member Boards whose players have participated in this event will be asked to consider whether, by doing so, those players are in breach of any other applicable rules, including those that prohibit participation in unsanctioned cricket, and if so for disciplinary action to be taken against them.”Where that leaves the former Pakistan captain Butt is unclear. Butt, 33, confirmed that he was involved in the event, even though he was not one of the players in the footage that led to the controversy, and there is no evidence for his involvement in any wrongdoing.”I went there as I was not picked for [my domestic team] Lahore and I was doing nothing,” Butt told PTI. “But when I reached there I realised it was just an amateur-level event which had no match referee, ICC anti-corruption representative or even scorers. Since the spot-fixing scandal, I try to stay away as far as possible from any related controversies. I am happy the ICC is investigating the event because there were lot of flaws in it. But I played just two games and then went away to Dubai.”Butt was banned for ten years by the ICC, five of them suspended, after he was convicted of convincing his fast bowlers to bowl no-balls at specific stages on the first day of the fourth Test match between England and Pakistan at Lord’s in 2010. After maintaining his innocence for several years, Butt accepted his guilt in 2013. He has since returned to the domestic circuit, but been unable to make an international comeback so far.
On May 28, 2022, Real Madrid secured a record-extending 14th Champions League trophy after batting away a Liverpool onslaught, leaving Jurgen Klopp's side in disbelief as their final chance to cherry-top a stunning season faded away like mist.
It was a poignantly bitter end to what, just one week earlier, tantalised to be a campaign of unprecedented brilliance, with Liverpool's hopes of a historic quadruple thwarted by Manchester City and Real Madrid's inevitability.
After the continental finale in Paris, Klopp declared to reporters that his squad would "go again", but the following year, last season, the Reds could not ignite the gas and toiled throughout a calamitous campaign.
Indeed, finishing fifth in the Premier League after dreadful form and a complete loss of cohesion, the Anfield side were rebuked for their "woeful" – as was said by journalist Caoimhe O'Neill – seasonal collapse, albeit salvaging Europa League football with improved performances and results to close the year.
naby-keita-liverpool-jurgen-klopp-premier-league
It was a team at the end of its life force, an odyssey stretching too long without meaningful replenishment, resulting in weary legs and stagnancy.
In August 2022, it had been four years since a centre-midfielder other than Thiago Alcantara had been signed, and the deadline day panic buy of Arthur Melo (who played 13 competitive minutes for Liverpool) encapsulated the inept approach on the transfer front.
It all could have been so different, if only the Merseyside outfit succeeded in their pursuit of France prodigy Aurelien Tchouameni, but Los Blancos' trophy-winning victory over Liverpool was always going to pave an irrevocable path for the holding midfielder.
Did Aurelien Tchouameni nearly sign for Liverpool?
Liverpool's refusal to sign a midfielder last summer and ultimately opt for Arthur in a stop-gap move was perhaps an obstinate way of throwing the toys out of the pram after failing to sign Tchouameni, who was viewed as the perfect successor to Fabinho's position as the No. 6.
Indeed, according to multiple sources – including transfer guru Fabrizio Romano – Liverpool were in contention for the player's signature, alongside Paris Saint-Germain, though Real Madrid were always the favourites to secure his services.
However, Liverpool's pursuit would ultimately prove fruitless, with Real Madrid securing a €100m (£85m) transfer for the latest Monaco sensation, praised as "world-class" by Transfermarkt's Stefan Bienkowski.
While the prospect of playing under Klopp at Liverpool was undoubtedly enticing, the sway of the Santiago Bernabeu proved too much, especially after Vinicius Junior's goal sank the Anfield ship.
For those of an Anfield persuasion, it comes as a great shame that they were not able to get the deal done for a player who would have made a greater impact last term than Jude Bellingham, who was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool before the club withdrew from the race for his name in April.
This is largely due to the need for comprehensive change, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch instead being landed to restore the midfield.
How good is Aurelien Tchouameni?
Not only would Liverpool have upgraded on Fabinho – who had an "awful" season at the epicentre of Anfield's demise, according to pundit Jamie Carragher – but they would have procured a new central focal point to transform the entire team.
His particular set of skills would have been a better fit than Bellingham's last season, as contentious as that may sound as the England international obliterates defences with ease after emulating Tchouameni's move to Madrid.
One of the most imperturbable presences on the ball and a superlative and tenacious defensive cog, the Frenchman ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 6% for passes attempted, the top 2% for interceptions, the top 6% for clearances, the top 20% for tackles and the top 10% for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref.

Given the names that the £205k-per-week is likened to, it's clear that Liverpool would have secured the services of a midfield machine custom-made for the rigours of Premier League football.
The "superb talent" – as dubbed by Rio Ferdinand – did not enjoy the incredible first year in Spain that many would have hoped, and despite making 50 appearances across all competitions, he was benched for every knockout tie in the Champions League and both semi-final legs against historic rivals Barcelona in the Cope del Rey.
However, the 27-cap international is still young and already boasts qualities that eclipse the lion's share of talented midfielders across Europe; that might not be the case when comparing him to Bellingham, who has been hailed as a "generational talent" by journalist Raphael Honigstein.
Moreover, as much as Bellingham is a bona fide prodigy, he is not a defensive midfielder, actually utilised in and around the final third with Real Madrid, and his French counterpart would have provided the steely assurance in the centre to prevent the malaise that seeped in last year.
Bellingham, aged just 20, joined Real in an initial €103m (£88m) deal this summer after rising to prominence in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, and has blitzed into life at one of football's greatest-ever clubs with five goals and an assist across his first four outings in the Spanish top-flight.
There were rumours that Liverpool would return for Tchouameni once more this summer, with The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe claiming that the 23-year-old had remained a coveted commodity on Merseyside, with Klopp earmarking him as he rebuilt his team's midfield.
But after starting all four of Real's LaLiga matches thus far this term, it's looking increasingly unlikely that he will be departing the Spanish capital any time soon, especially after personally distancing himself from rumours in July after liking a tweet suggesting he is not for sale amid interest from the Premier League giants.
Once remarked to be "pure gold" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Tchouameni will long be remembered as a player who could have reinvigorated the Liverpool ranks and prevented a detrimental campaign that has severed the club's illustrious seven-year stay in the Champions League.
And while Liverpool's fortunes look far brighter at present, there is no telling how mighty the squad could have become with such a blistering talent orchestrating the play from the nucleus of Klopp's system.
Despite their impressive performance in the Nidahas Trophy, Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper said they “haven’t become a T20 side of caliber yet”

Before the Nidahas Trophy, Bangladesh never felt like they were playing consistently in a T20 tournament, according to Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka twice in final-over thrillers, which has given them confidence for the future.Mushfiqur said Bangladesh’s overall recovery in this tournament, after the poor home series against Sri Lanka, stood out. They were beaten 2-0 in the T20s in February, after they lost the ODI tri-series final and the Test series, to Sri Lanka.’Should have been quiet’ – Nurul Hasan
Nurul Hasan, the Bangladesh substitute player, who picked up a 25% fine for his behaviour in the match against Sri Lanka on Friday, said he regretted arguing with Thisara Perera. “I was sent inside the field to speak to [Mahmudullah] Riyad ,” Nurul said. “I asked the umpire whether the first ball was given a bouncer. Thisara Perera came up to me and said, ‘Who are you to talk? You go, you don’t have to talk’. I said I am not talking to you. He started to abuse me. I kept saying it has nothing to do with you. I should have been quiet. I think the heat of the moment got to me. This is all that happened.”
“We haven’t become a T20 side of caliber yet but if you compare how we did in the home T20s in February to how we did in Sri Lanka, we have taken a step in the right direction,” Mushfiqur said. “We have shown we can be consistent in T20s. We still have a lot of room for improvement. Our top-order batsmen have to play till the end. We did finish two games well.”Our bowlers have to take more wickets in the Powerplay overs. We have to work on our death-over bowling. Most of the wickets were flat, we were a bit behind India’s economy rate. I think it is a gain that we now have some confidence in T20s, like we have found in Tests and ODIs.”Bangladesh were short of confidence prior to the Nidahas Trophy, but Mushfiqur boosted their morale after carrying them past Sri Lanka in the second league game. Mahmudullah’s cameo in the virtual knockout against Sri Lanka lifted them further. However, they lost one crucial moment in the final as Dinesh Karthik hit Soumya Sarkar for six off the last ball of the match.Mushfiqur however feels that Soumya cannot be blamed. “It is quite obvious to feel bad. But it wasn’t due to one person,” Mushfiqur said. “If all our bowlers could concede one or two runs less or our batsmen could have scored 10 runs more, things would have been different. It is a team game so the failure is ours. We have to take lessons from this game. It was the first time for Soumya, so I am sure the next time he faces up to such a situation, he will do much better.”A lot of big-name bowlers have failed to hold on to their nerve. Malinga was taken apart by Marlon Samuels in the same venue in the 2012 World T20. We lost a good opportunity, is all I can say. It is not every day that you get a chance to beat India. We have now missed two opportunities. We will keep this hurt inside so that we can go ahead.”

Na próxima rodada, o Juventude visita o Cruzeiro, no Mineirão. O Brasil de Pelotas encara o Figueirense, no Bento de Freitas.
O duelo
O Brasil de Pelotas começou a todo vapor. Com apenas 13 minutos, o Xavante já vencia por 2 a 0. Os dois gols saíram através de Matheus Oliveira. No primeiro, ele fuzilou na grande área. No segundo converteu o pênalti.
No cruzamento, ele cabeceou no contrapé e Rafael fez milagre. No rebote, o lateral tentou novamente e o arqueiro pegou para segurar a vitória.

Manchester City are on the verge of announcing a double deal at the Etihad Stadium involving two exciting youngsters.
What's the latest news involving Manchester City?
The Cityzens take on Nottingham Forest on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium; however, they will be without the services of Bernardo Silva, who was substituted off against Crvena zvezda with an unspecified injury, as per BBC Sport. Manchester City are yet to lose a single home match in 2023 and have registered 63 goals in the process, now looking to keep their perfect domestic start to the campaign alive too, conceding just three goals.
Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has spoken to Sky Sports regarding several aspects of life at Manchester City and has taken delight in the Sky Blues success of last campaign, stating: "Honestly, last season is difficult to describe. To be able to win so many titles, only one team in England had ever done that before and that was Manchester United many years ago.
He then added: "So, for us to do it again and be able to repeat that feat was sensational. It was a fantastic year for all of us, but it's really hard to pick out specific moments that stand out. "For sure, what does stand out is being with our families, with my children. For all of us, they are moments that really stick in the memory."
In other news, The Athletic report that Crystal Palace are set to open contract talks with playmaker Eberechi Eze, who Manchester City considered in the summer as a target following Kevin De Bruyne's lengthy injury lay-off.
Who are Manchester City signing?
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on social media platform X regarding Manchester City's impending double deal to sign two young talents outside of the transfer window, stating: "Manchester City will formally complete both Divine Mukasa and Harrison Parker deals today — documents being signed, then time to announce. Parker joins from Man United, exclusive news confirmed — Mukasa joins from West Ham. Two more for their ambitious Academy."
Of course, this follows the trend of Manchester City recruiting top talent not just at first-team level but at the academy stage to develop youngsters in the hope they will one day represent the senior side.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
The Sun add that Harrison Parker was offered a contract by Manchester United; nevertheless, the Red Devils were unwilling to break their wage structure and meet his demands for a higher pay packet. Parker joined Manchester United from Arsenal in 2021 and will be joined by Divine Mukasa – the pair will link up with the Cityzens Elite Development Squad, who have secured three consecutive Premier League 2 titles.
Despite this, they have actually started this campaign in an inconsistent patch of form, recording one win, one draw and two losses in their opening four matches. Both players would meet homegrown requirements, which in turn could aid Manchester City's Financial Fair Play obligations as they could sell them on for pure profit in the future.
Despite winning the Women’s World Cup only a few months ago, Mark Robinson admitted his side’s T20 cricket is not at the same level
George Dobell08-Mar-20183:23
Access All Areas: England Women
England are going to have to improve significantly if they are to win the Women’s World T20, Mark Robinson believes. Despite winning the Women’s World Cup only a few months ago, the England coach admitted his side’s T20 cricket is not at the same level.Part of the issue, he believes, is simply that they do not play enough. England went into their Ashes T20 matches having not played international T20 for nearly 18 months (from July 2016 to November 2017) and, as a consequence, are unsure of their best side or tactics. Clearly, however, they are looking for more pace from their bowlers and more power from their hitters ahead of the tournament in the Caribbean in November.”We have to address some areas we haven’t done very well in T20,” Robinson said as he looked ahead to England’s T20 tri-series against India and Australia in India. “We’ve looked at the Big Bash and the Super League to see how our players do. And our batters don’t come out of it with big numbers.”I watch the Super League and the Big Bash and the overseas players are dominating a bit. I don’t want that. I want our players to dominate. I’m challenging my players to dominate. We know we need to win big moments and Powerplays.”We’ve got to look to improve that. What we’re doing at the moment isn’t going to win you a World Cup. And we have to change that.”In the long-term, Robinson believes the standard of England’s fast bowling must improve. The game around the world, he feels, is disproportionately dominated by what he refers to as “dobbers” but, as the standard of pitches improves, he feels greater skills will be required.”At the moment our game is being dominated by dobbers,” he said. “Not spinners but slow bowlers. The women’s game is a trial by spin. The standard of fast bowling is not good enough in world cricket. If the wickets improve like they have been then they – the bowlers – are going to have to get better.”The ability to bowl the wide yorkers and the ability to bowl the bouncer is really important. You are going to want to have impact bowlers. New Zealand have Lea Tahuhu and South Africa have Shabnim Ismail and they are really important on good wickets as they can grab you a wicket.”That’s one thing that is starting to change now. The bowlers have to fight back – not dumb down – and get better and not be bossed all over the place like we were in the last two Ashes games.”One advantage enjoyed by England’s men but not extended to the women was the erection of a tent at Loughborough enabling players to practise on grass ahead of the tour. “The tent is put up for the men,” Robinson said. “We don’t get that luxury unfortunately. Maybe in a few years’ time we will.”
