Ranking The Worst 10 Leeds Transfers Under Marcelo Bielsa

After a rough start to the season, Leeds United finally look like they have found some form in the Championship, in part thanks to their summer signings like Joel Piroe and Ethan Ampadu.

That said, the Peacocks haven't had the most success when it comes to signings over the last few years, and for as brilliant a manager Marcelo Bielsa was, some of his signings at the club were pretty shocking.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has taken a look at the ten worst signings Leeds United made during the Argentine's reign.

10 Liam McCarron (£250k)

Signed for just €290k (£250k) from Carlisle United, it might be a bit harsh to label the youngster a flop, but given how McCarron's time in West Yorkshire went, it would be hard to call it anything else.

His arrival was met with hope from the Leeds hierarchy that after a few years bedding into the side, he would become a regular starter in the Premier League for the team.

Unfortunately, after just a single nine-minute appearance for the senior team in three years, it became painfully apparent that he wasn't of the level required. He is now a Stoke City player and on loan at Port Vale.

9 Helder Costa (£16m)

Now, this one might raise a few eyebrows; after all, Helder Costa was one of the most important players in the team that helped get Leeds promoted back to the Premier League in 2020.

However, that was when he was on loan at the club, but after the Whites splashed out £16m to make his deal permanent, he became incredibly unproductive – to put it diplomatically.

In the three years following his permanent move, Costa played just 25 Premier League games for Leeds, scoring just three goals and providing three assists. In fact, he became so unproductive in West Yorkshire that he spent last season on loan with Al-Ittihad and spent the season before that with Valencia.

His contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier this month, and he is still without a club. Oh, what could have been.

8 Diego Llorente (£18m)

Leeds defender Diego Llorente.

Signed from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2020 for £18m, Diego Llorente wasn't dreadful in his first season; he was just injured for a lot of it.

That said, when he was playing regularly in his second season at the club, he just looked totally out of his depth. Leeds were a defensive mess in the 2021/22 season, and Llorente was a big part of that.

The Spaniard was loaned out to Jose Mourinho's Roma in January of this year, where he remains this season. He may not have been responsible for all of Leeds' defensive woes under Bielsa, but he certainly didn't help.

7 Eddie Nketiah (loan)

eddie-nketiah-arsenal-premier-league-gabriel-jesus-title

Now, hold your horses there, Arsenal fans; we aren't calling Eddie Nketiah a bad player here, not by any stretch of the imagination; in fact, we have picked him for this list as the decision to take him on loan and then barely play him ranks as one of Bielsa's most baffling.

The Arsenal forward was sent out on loan in the summer of 2019 and then recalled just a few months later in January over concerns that he wasn't getting enough game time – valid concerns, at that.

It turned out that Bielsa favoured Patrick Bamford over the young Gooner, and while that ultimately worked out for the club in terms of promotion, it also directly led to the club signing off on the worst transfer made under Bielsa's watch, meaning his usage of Nketiah has to go down as a huge error of judgement…

6 Lewis Baker (Loan)

Our second loan player on this list is Lewis Baker, who, at the time, was seen as the next big thing to come out of Chelsea's Cobham academy.

However, he failed to impress Bielsa and, just like Nketiah, was recalled to his parent club midway through the season over concerns about playing time.

That said, while the Arsenal man has since gone on to prove the Argentine wrong by regularly starting for a title-chasing Gunners side, Baker has since faded into relative obscurity and now plies his trade for Stoke City.

5 Ian Poveda

Ian Poveda for Leeds

Ian Poveda joined Leeds United in January 2020 from Manchester City's academy for an undisclosed fee.

His move was met with quite a lot of excitement as there was a general expectation that he would be the next big thing out of the club's academy.

Well, it's been three and a half years, and we think it's safe to say he hasn't met those expectations, and if we're being honest, he hasn't even come close.

In all, the 23-year-old has made just 25 appearances for the club and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool respectively.

4 Junior Firpo (£12.7m)

Junior Firpo left frustrated as he plays for Leeds United in the Premier League.

The story of Junior Firpo is similar to Diego Llorente's. The defender was signed from Barcelona in the summer of 2021 for around £13m, and there was quite a bit of excitement surrounding his arrival.

Unfortunately, that excitement proved to be misplaced as the rapid full-back became part of a backline that conceded an astronomical number of goals across the 2021/22 season – 79 to be exact.

There have been moments since his arrival in which it looked like he would be moving on, but just over two years later, he is still at the club; aside from longevity, we aren't sure we can say much else positive about his time at Leeds.

3 Robin Koch (£11.5m)

Premier League, Leeds United, Leeds United news, Leeds United latest news, Leeds United performance, Leeds United analysis, LUFC news, LUFC team news, LUFC analysis, Fulham vs Leeds, Robin Koch

Signed from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg for a fee of around £11.5m in summer 2020, the German centre-back came to Leeds with so much promise but ultimately left as a disappointment.

When he joined the team, he was getting fairly regular call-ups to the German national team, but in the three and a half years since he signed for the club, he has played in just four games for Germany.

Along with failing to live up to people's expectations, he also spent a significant period on the sidelines injured. The move really was just a failure in all departments.

After playing a crucial role in some of the worst defensive teams the Premier League had seen in recent years and being a part of the squad that was ultimately relegated, Koch finally left to join Eintracht Frankfurt on loan.

2 Daniel James (£25m)

Daniel James could stay at Elland Road.

Daniel James is our pick for the second-worst signing made by Leeds United during the Marcelo Bielsa era, and it's not really close.

The Welsh international was actually set to sign for the Whites back in January 2019 and was even at Elland Road taking pictures and partaking in a documentary, but reported disagreements inside of Swansea City caused the deal to collapse at the 11th hour, leaving all parties embarrassed and Leeds without their man.

Honestly, the Peacocks should've taken that as a sign. Instead, the rapid winger signed for Manchester United in the summer and spent the following two years trying to make it at Old Trafford.

In August 2021, it was clear that he had no place at United, so when Leeds came knocking again, he jumped at the chance to rebuild his career in West Yorkshire.

The Whites agreed to pay £25m for James – £10m more than United paid and £15m more than they were going to pay in 2019 – and he joined the club on a five-year contract.

He would make 36 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, scoring just four goals and providing five assists. However, after just one year at Leeds, he moved to Fulham on loan, claiming that it was about game time.

He has since returned to the Peacocks and has played nine games in the Championship, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

In the end, there is some talent there, but a considerable fee, below-par attacking output, and jumping ship after his first season means we couldn't place him any higher on this list. Maybe he'll redeem himself in the Championship this season.

1 Jean-Kevin Augustin (£40m in total)

Here we are then, the worst singing Leeds United made during Bielsa's tenure as manager, and to call it the worst transfer in the club's history might still be doing it a disservice.

The reason this deal was even signed off in the first place was that the club needed a backup striker once Nketiah was recalled.

So the club reached out to RB Leipzig in Germany and offered to take the promising Augustin on a season-long loan.

The Frenchman ultimately ended up playing just 48 minutes of football for the club, but the loan deal stipulated that were Leeds to achieve promotion in May of that year, they would have to pay £18m to sign the player on a permanent deal.

Now, as we all know, Leeds did make it back to the Premier League that year, but the pandemic put a halt to all football in March, and so when they did finally gain promotion, it was June, not May.

The Peacocks assumed that because of the unique circumstances, they wouldn't have to pay the £18m for the striker, but as you would expect, Leipzig protested to FIFA, who then forced Leeds to pay £15.5m to settle the dispute.

However, it gets worse. The Athletic revealed earlier this year that they would also have to pay out the player's entire five-year contract he was set to sign, which amounted to another £24.5m.

So, in all, Leeds have had to pay £40m for a player who made just three substitute appearances for them, totalling 48 minutes, which has to make this one of the worst transfers in English football history. If only they had given Nketiah more minutes.

'Schutt is setting benchmark for bowlers around the world' – Australia coach

Australia women coach Matthew Mott says the opening bowler has learned to vary her pace skilfully, and the results showed when she had excellent returns in India earlier this year

Opening bowler Megan Schutt is setting the benchmark for bowlers around the world in limited-overs cricket, and that has reflected in the rankings, feels Australia coach Matthew Mott.Schutt is the No. 1 bowler in the ICC rankings for women’s T20Is, on 669 points and well clear of the second-placed Poonam Yadav of India, who has 611 points. In ODIs, Schutt’s compatriot Jess Jonassen is No. 1 with 676 points, and Schutt is not far behind on second spot with 667.”I think she’s almost the benchmark for bowlers around the world and that shows in the world rankings,” Mott told . “She was challenged a lot by the way the batters have come at her over the last year or so and she’s been prepared to take a step back, analyse the game and work out some options.”Mott said Schutt had learned to master changes of pace, and with all teams building up to the Women’s World T20 in the Caribbean in November, he threw down a challenge to the opponents.”[Her options include] taking the pace off the ball earlier, being more bold and aggressive with those changes of pace, and you can see the dividends paid off in India,” Mott said. “Teams are aware of her and it will be interesting to see if they come harder at her now, or look to see her off.”At the start of the year, in three ODIs that were part of the ICC Women’s Championship, Schutt had an economy rate of 3.87 in India – the best in the series while bowling 29.4 overs and taking four wickets. In the T20I tri-series that followed and also involved England, Schutt topped the wickets and economy rate charts, taking nine wickets in five matches and conceding runs at only 6.28 per over.Australia will play New Zealand in three T20Is in September and October before the World T20, and Mott said the entire bowling group had learned to stay ahead of the batsmen, and would be using the time at home to hone their skills further.”We improved last series in terms of when teams were coming hard at us, that we were able to just absorb that pressure a bit,” Mott said. “One thing you can’t have is to just let it all go. We know batters are going to hit boundaries and they’ve got power and there’s only four fielders out, so it’s difficult.”You can’t hedge your bets as a bowling group, but there are certainly ways you can try and get ahead of the batter and get them guessing a bit more. I don’t want to give too many secrets away but that’s certainly something our bowling group has researched quite diligently and we’re looking forward to practicing here before taking it overseas.”

"Joy" – Sky pundit says Ange has turned one Tottenham star into a workhorse

A pundit has told Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has now drilled one Spurs star into working very hard.

Spurs form and results this season

The Lilywhites look transformed by Postecoglou's arrival; winning seven out of a possible nine Premier League games while remaining unbeaten in that period. Victories over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley, Sheffield United, Liverpool, Luton Town and Fulham have helped table-topping Tottenham to their finest start since they clinched a double in the 1960/1961 campaign.

Postecoglou has also broken a record, overseeing the best start made by a new manager in Premier League history. The mood around north London is one of real positivity and jubilation right now, and alongside their popular head coach, supporters have a key players to thank for their meteoric early-season rise. Son Heung-min, who's already scored seven top flight goals this season, has formed a very fruitful partnership with summer signing James Maddison in the forward areas.

Heung-min Son and James Maddison

Indeed, Maddison joined Spurs from Leicester City for £40 million over the last transfer window (BBC) – a fee which now looks like one of the bargains of 2023. His three goals and five assists, not to mention overall performances, have attracted real praise. The midfielder has also dazzled at international level, with England manager Gareth Southgate praising Maddison as a player who brings the "sunshine".

“He is in a really good vein of form," said Southgate at an England press conference.

"A really good character around the group. He connects people well. We have got the more steady, serious guys & we have a lot of guys who bring a lot of sunshine."

Aaron Lennon praises James Maddison

It's one of English football's worst kept secrets that Maddison is a serial creator going forward, having also notched a brilliant 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League for Leicester last campaign. Now, he's found a new set of fans to entertain with his quality on a weekly basis, and it appears the sky may very well be the limit.

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-newcastle-united-transfer-atletico-madrid-kieran-trippier

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has lavished Maddison with praise on Sky Sports as well, but it's for an aspect for his game you wouldn't usually associate that often with the star playmaker. Lennon has spotted something different which Postecoglou has drilled into his game – namely that he's now working very hard out of possession.

“Yeah, at the minute he’s on absolute fire," said Lennon to Sky (via Football Daily) after their 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday.

"I was watching him and he completely dictated the game. He was working hard off the ball, I think the new manager has got that into him. He must be a joy to play with, as one of those front players with him behind you, if you make the run he’ll find you. He’s the man of the moment at the minute."

James Maddison style of play

Gets fouled often

Likes to cut inside

Likes to dribble

Plays the ball off the ground often

Likes to do lay-offs

Likes to play long balls

Maddison will next be in action against Crystal Palace on Friday, as Spurs look to maintain their incredible run and remain top of the table.

O futebol monótono do primeiro ficou no vestiário.

Arsenal: Wenger’s "anonymous" dud cost the Gunners £1.7m per goal

Arsenal are back where they belong thanks to the revival of Mikel Arteta’s squad, as the Spaniard continues to turn things around at the Emirates after a difficult start to life as a manager at his former club.

The Gunners fired themselves into a title charge last season, leading the pack for the majority of the campaign before being knocked off their perch by Manchester City, who won the Premier League by five points in their bid for the treble.

Despite the agony of being so close after years of mediocrity by Arsenal’s standards, Arteta led his team to fulfilling their goal of being reinstated into Europe's elite with Champions League qualification.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

From the later years of Arsene Wenger’s tenure, to Unai Emery’s highs to quick lows during his 18-month stay, the Gunners endured a spell of over a decade without making significant progress.

The failure to grasp consistency, to players coming and going and viewing Arsenal as a stepping stone in their personal progression, the north Londoners seem to be exiting the tunnel of adequacy thanks to Arteta’s clear motive for success.

In 2018, the Emirates saw a host of changes and struggles, with star player Alexis Sanchez opting to leave for Manchester United, and Wenger departing that summer as Emery took charge.

The sale of Sanchez reinforced the lack of progression in north London, yet his ugly exit was quickly eased by the arrival of United midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

When did Arsenal sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan?

The January window of 2018 saw drama unfold between United and Arsenal, as the two fierce rivals engaged in a swap deal as Alexis went to Old Trafford and Mkhitaryan arrived at the Emirates.

After the theatrics and negativity that the Chilean induced at the club due to his poor mindset and desire to leave, the Armenian’s arrival dispersed a sense of relief and excitement, as the Gunners realised the talent that had acquired despite painfully losing their superstar.

While the former Borussia Dortmund playmaker didn’t impose his best game at Old Trafford, there was hope that the extent of the 28-year-old’s talent would unfold under Wenger’s free-flowing style of play.

That January was a pivotal time for both Arsenal and Mkhitaryan, as the Gunners later welcomed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the club, who was a former teammate of the Armenia international in Germany.

The angst felt towards Alexis was quickly relieved by the arrival of the former Dortmund duo, as a new wave of talent arrived with the goal of achieving at the Emirates.

How much did Henrikh Mkhitaryan earn at Arsenal?

Mkhitaryan was one of United’s top-earners in the 2017/18 campaign, and with a high calibre talent came a high wage demand.

The Gunners matched the £200k-per-week salary of the 28-year-old at Old Trafford, eased by the exit of Sanchez, who relieved Arsenal of paying out his monstrous wage of £350k-per-week.

Mkhitaryan was introduced into the squad as the north Londoner’s second-highest earner, picking up a hefty salary of £10.4m-per-year.

How many goals did Mkhitaryan score?

There was a lot of excitement regarding Mkhitaryan’s arrival, despite his inability to fully translate his quality to the Premier League during his 18-month stay at Old Trafford.

Prior to his move to United, the Armenian had an unbelievable campaign in Germany, recording 55 direct goal contributions in 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 and assisting 32 for Dortmund.

henrikh-mkhitaryan

In Manchester, Mkhitaryan managed only a fraction of that level of performance, scoring 13 and assisting 11 in a total of 63 appearances for the Red Devils, warranting his swift exit just a year and a half after his arrival.

The form that the former Dortmund whiz portrayed at United should have sparked a slight level of concern from Arsenal’s side, particularly as they were handing over a player with 80 goals in 166 appearances in Sanchez.

There were however signs of encouragement in his first campaign in the capital, as in his first Premier League start for his new club, he rolled back the years by recording three assists during Arsenal’s 5-1 demolition of Everton, assisting his former teammate Aubameyang to reminisce on their perfect partnership at Westfalenstadion.

Mkhitaryan ended his first spell at the Emirates with nine goal involvements in 17 appearances, scoring three and assisting six in all competitions to round off an adequate introduction.

Unfortunately, things just didn’t tick in England for the Armenian the way they did in Germany, as in his second campaign, he scored only six goals in a total of 39 appearances, form that saw him slip down the pecking order as he battled injury and lacklustre performances.

Was he worth it?

After his first full season at Arsenal, the club made the decision to send the midfielder on loan to Roma in 2019, which subsequently marked the end of his time in north London as he signed permanently for the Italian outfit in 2020 after failing to make an impact under Emery.

In 59 appearances, Mkhitaryan left the Emirates having scored just nine goals, a poor record considering his primary deployment being on the flank with his role to advance in the final third.

It wasn’t just his uninspiring form in front of goal that contributed to his premature axing at Arsenal, as he was often untraceable on the pitch, reinforced by him being dubbed as “anonymous” by journalist Layth Yousif, who blasted one of his performances as “pitiful”.

What was most concerning was that while he failed to grasp the demands of playing in the Premier League, Arsenal were paying Mkhitaryan a blockbuster wage of £200k-per-week, which over his 18 months at the club, racked up an expenditure of £15.6m in salary alone.

To put such costs into perspective, the Armenian cost Arsenal around £1.7m per goal he scored while at the club, highlighting just how horrendous the deal proved to be, with the pill made somewhat easier to swallow as Sanchez also failed to perform at United.

What is Henrikh Mkhitaryan doing now?

Ironically, the two players involved in the terrible swap deal in January 2018 have found sanctuary playing together at Inter Milan.

At the San Siro, Mkhitaryan’s poor form in front of goal has continued, portrayed by his mere seven goals and three assists in 59 appearances so far for the Nerazzurri, with the height of his career proving to have come in Germany.

Arsenal were rinsed by the Armenian’s monumental salary, yet were lucky that his tenure in the capital lasted only 18 months to spare any additional financial strain to maintain the midfielder.

Pant, Kuldeep picked for first three Tests; Bhuvneshwar doubtful

While Rohit Sharma was dropped after playing two Tests in South Africa earlier this year, Karun Nair was slotted in and so was fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who had failed a fitness test recently

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav have been picked in India’s 18-man squad for the first three Tests in England. While Kuldeep was part of India’s squad for the Afghanistan Test in June, this was a maiden Test call-up for Pant, who has followed up a smashing IPL with important innings for the India A side in England. The selectors named the squad for only the first three matches of the five-Test series. The selectors didn’t consider Rohit Sharma’s two limited-overs centuries on the tour enough reason to hand him a Test comeback, with India A captain Karun Nair continuing to hold the spot of the extra middle-order batsman.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

India had problems in the bowling department with Bhuvneshwar Kumar not named in the squad after he aggravated his lower-back stiffness while playing the ODI series decider a day before the Test squad was announced. Jasprit Bumrah, although named in the squad, will only be available for selection from the second Test on as he recovers from a broken thumb sustained early on the tour in Ireland.”Bhuvneshwar Kumar aggravated a lower back condition in the 3rd ODI against England,” the BCCI release said. “His condition is being assessed by the BCCI medical team and a call on his inclusion in the Test squad will be made soon.”Bhuvneshwar will be assessed by a specialist in London, and a decision will then be taken if he comes back to India or stays in England for rehab. The early assessment is not very optimistic according to sources. If Bhuvneshwar is ruled out of the Test series, it is bound to raise question marks over his inclusion in the third ODI after he had sat out the first two with the same issue. At the toss, Kohli had said it was not a tactical decision to play Bhuvneshwar; he said he wanted to give all the fast bowlers a chance in the series. In the match, Bhuvneshwar didn’t look at his best, bowling seven overs for 49 runs and dropping a catch.About Bumrah, the release said: “Jasprit Bumrah, who has been included in the squad, will be available for selection from the 2nd Test onwards based on his fitness.”Kohli would have been aware of the injury concerns to both his limited-overs strike bowlers but put up a brave face on Tuesday, when asked how ready India were for the Test series. At the post-match presentation after losing the ODI series 2-1, Kohli said the selectors and the team management did not need to take any hard decisions. “Our squad is pretty settled. We are really excited to be going into a lengthy Test series. It is going to be very challenging, but something that we are looking forward to as a side. We want to play hard cricket. We want to play tough cricket, which I’m sure the English team would provide us. It is going to be a hard-fought series between two quality sides.”Bhuvneshwar’s contribution during the 2014 England tour•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, however. Mohammed Shami, who missed most of the IPL with personal issues and then turned up unfit for India training, has cleared the mandatory yo-yo test to force his way back into the squad. The other three quicks available for selection for the first Test were Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur. The selectors resisted the temptation of handing out Test selection based on limited-overs performances two matches after captain Virat Kohli had said Kuldeep and fellow wristspinner Yuzvendra Chahal had made a serious case for Test selection. Kuldeep, part of the squad for the Afghanistan Test, was retained as the third spinner, but Chahal, who last played a first-class match in December 2016, was not included. India’s two big match-winners at home, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, were retained. While the selectors seem to have resisted flamboyant picks, they did select a bolter in Pant, who originally wasn’t even part of the four-day leg of the A side’s tour. As it emerged that Wriddhiman Saha was not going to recover from his injury in time, India needed a back-up wicketkeeper for Dinesh Karthik. The choice was between going back to Parthiv Patel and looking to the future. Pant helped his own case with an unbeaten 67 in a successful chase of 321 against West Indies A in Taunton. He was unbeaten on 37 in the ongoing match against England Lions at the time of the announcement of the squad.Pant averages 54.16 in first-class cricket with a strike rate of 98.54, which has led observers to wonder if he could play an Adam Gilchrist-like role in India’s Test side. However, Pant failed to grab his opportunities on the A tour of South Africa last year. The last first-class season went without a century, but he has been in red-hot form since the start of the IPL.

Mowbray can unleash Sunderland’s "excellent" academy star over Rusyn

Sunderland's play-off train had derailed in recent weeks, suffering three consecutive defeats at the hands of Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Leicester City.

This alarming slump in form was a cause for concern, however, that was removed on Saturday as the Black Cats romped to a 3-1 victory over Norwich City to move to within one point of sixth place Cardiff City.

Tony Mowbray has seen several stars shine this term, including fleet-footed winger Jack Clarke, who is subject to Premier League interest, midfield maestro Dan Neil and solid centre-back Dan Ballard.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Unfortunately, one area that hasn't seen an individual stand out this term is the striker position.

Since the departure of clinical finisher Ross Stewart to Southampton in the summer – who scored 40 goals in 80 games for the club – neither Mason Burstow, Luis Semedo nor Nazariy Rusyn have taken the bull by the horns and filled the void left behind by the Scotsman.

Nazariy Rusyn's season by numbers

When eyeing up replacements for Stewart in the summer, instead of splashing the cash on one striker, Mowbray decided to spread the funds across three different forwards.

Rusyn was signed from Zorya Lugansk for a reported €2.5m (£2.2m), Mason Burstow was acquired on loan from Chelsea and Luis Semedo arrived as a highly-rated striker from Benfica.

Former Charlton loanee Mason Burstow.

With a blend of pace, strength and an eye for goal between the aforementioned trio, Mowbray must have felt he had done enough to resolve Sunderland's goal-scoring conundrum.

Mason Burstow had scored ten goals in 25 Premier League 2 appearances for Chelsea last term, while Rusyn plundered 21 goals in 49 matches for Zorya and Semedo was clinical for Benfica's U23s, netting 21 in 44 matches.

The above records point towards three clinical strikers and at the time, it looked as though the club had done some solid business to prise three talented youngsters to the club, however, 14 matches later and zero goals between them, that couldn't be any further from the truth.

With frustrations ever-growing, Mowbray could use some of the Stewart cash to bring in another striker in January, or he could unleash promising teenager, Harry Gardiner from the academy.

The 20-year-old has been scoring goals for fun in Premier League 2.

The player who could replace Nazariy Rusyn

Sunderland are accustomed to unearthing talented youngsters from their academy having thrown Dan Neil and 16-year-old Chris Rigg into the first-team set-up.

It is, therefore, imperative that Mowbray continues to pluck youngsters from the U21s and throw them into the senior team, with Gardiner making a strong case to become the next academy revelation.

The clinical finisher, who was nominated for September's Player of the Month award in PL2 after bagging four goals in three games against Manchester United, Derby County and Aston Villa, has showcased his predatory instincts in the box.

After his hard work and sensational form earned the recognition he deserved, U21's manager Graeme Murty took to the Sunderland official website to speak about his progress.

He said: “He is in a rich vein of form at the moment. We are constantly bigging him up with humility and hard work. There is a good group around him who will always look to feed him, especially inside the area. We ask him to get in there and he is very focused on getting goals.”

That outstanding form in September wasn't out of the ordinary for Gardiner. He's been tearing through opposition defences for years now, having posted 18 goals in 47 appearances across Sunderland's underage groups.

Hailed by journalist Josh Bunting as "excellent" for his form last term, the young striker is banging down Mowbray's door for a first-team opportunity and if his current crop of strikers continue to fire blanks, he'll have no other choice but to unleash the powerful poacher.
