Moises Henriques and Sean Abbott lead perfectly-paced New South Wales chase

David Warner set the platform with a positive half-century against winless South Australia

A partnership of 141 between Moises Henriques and the promoted Sean Abbott secured New South Wales an impressive chase in Adelaide as they hunted down 295 with 11 balls to spare to propel the defending champions top of the table.David Warner had set the base after South Australia declared shortly before lunch but after he and Kurtis Patterson had fallen either side tea the decision to elevate the in-form Abbott worked a treat in a perfectly-paced partnership. The outcome rewarded New South Wales’ decision to declare well behind on the third day and thereby opening up the chance for a chase while South Australia played their part by “dangling the carrot” as their coach Jason Gillespie put it rather than killing the match off.”We definitely wanted to have a crack at that for most of the day and not shut up shop and they certainly needed win,” Abbott said. “A sporting declaration, so good on Heady [Travis Head] for doing that.”After spending a couple of days in the dirt I was more than happy to go out there and try and score some runs. Got together with Mo and things went our way. We faced a couple of tough spells, credit to them they created chances and beat the bat.”Nathan Lyon had struck with the second ball of the day with a terrific delivery to take Jake Weatherald’s off stump and it proved difficult for South Australia to press the accelerator, not aided when Alex Carey was given run out to what was a very borderline call with no TV replays available. In the end they batted for 22 overs adding 85 runs.New South Wales had few problems maintaining a run rate of four an over early on. Travis Head broke an opening stand of 59 when Nick Larkin miscued a pull, but Warner ensured the scoreboard kept moving with a 61-ball fifty although he slowed down significantly after that with his last 19 runs taking 45 deliveries before becoming a notable wicket for debutant Joe Medew-Ewen as he picked out deep midwicket.Patterson then dragged on immediately after tea to give the Redbacks some hope as they also managed to squeeze the scoring rate but Henriques and Abbott did not panic, passing 600 and 500 runs respectively for the season. Henriques, who was given a life on 28, went to his fifty with an elegant lofted drive for six off Medew-Ewen and Abbott’s second half-century of the game came from 52 balls.

Aston Villa offered deal for "powerful" £34.5m forward who outscored Duran

Aston Villa centre-forward Jhon Duran has endured a summer full of intense speculation over his future at the club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The Colombia international has attracted interest from both Chelsea and West Ham United during the transfer window, and he has been close to joining both clubs at different points.

However, the former MLS star remains an Aston Villa player at this moment in time, whilst the Villans are still open to offers for the young striker before the deadline at the end of this month.

With Duran's future at the club still uncertain, sporting director Monchi may just have been given the perfect opportunity to secure his replacement.

Aston Villa offered deal for LaLiga star

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs who have been offered the chance to sign Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion. The reporter claims that Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Leverkusen have all been given the opportunity to swoop in for the 20-year-old marksman, after Chelsea's deal for the attacker collapsed.

Sky Sports claimed that the Blues had agreed a £34.5m fee with the Spanish giants for the young Olympian, before contractual issues caused the transfer to fall through.

That, according to Jacobs, has presented Monchi with a chance to seal a deal for Omorodion to bolster Unai Emery's options at the top end of the pitch. However, the journalist adds that Villa and Bournemouth did not initiate the contact with Atletico and they are not actively pursuing a move for the striker at this moment in time.

The Villans could do worse than swooping in and making the most of this opportunity, though, as a fantastic replacement for Duran this month.

Why Samu Omorodion would be a good signing

Firstly, Omorodion is a young striker who could come in as a long-term heir to Ollie Watkins and the perfect understudy to the England international, rather than being a signing who would expect to come in and immediately be the starting number nine.

He only turned 20 in May and has plenty of years left ahead of him to develop and grow under Emery and his staff's coaching, whilst also learning from Watkins.

The Spanish ace, who was described as "powerful" by analyst Ben Mattinson, is also coming off the back of a solid season on loan with Alaves in La Liga – scoring more goals than Duran did for Villa.

As you can see in the table above, Omorodion outscored the Villans youngster at league level last season, with four more goals in 12 more appearances, to go along with two more 'big chances' created for his teammates.

Duran also failed to score in 12 Premier League outings during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, which means that the Atletico gem scored more goals in La Liga last term than the Colombian marksman has in 18 months in the Premier League. Therefore, Omorodion could end up being a better option, due to his potential to offer more as a scorer and a creator of goals, than the current Villa striker.

Samit Patel anchors Nottinghamshire chase after Calvin Harrison pegs Leicestershire back

Notts consolidate top spot despite Moores, Clarke and Budinger’s absences

A half-century from Samit Patel saw North Group leaders Nottinghamshire Outlaws home by six wickets with 13 balls to spare as the Foxes slumped to an eighth defeat of the Vitality Blast season.Patel hit six fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 63 and shared a 99-run fourth-wicket stand with Ben Slater, who made 48 from 31 balls in his first Twenty20 match for three years, as the Outlaws chased down a target of 155, the Foxes dropping three catches on a poor night in the field.Legspinner Calvin Harrison took 3 for 20 and Luke Fletcher 3 for 31 as Leicestershire were bowled out for 154 in precisely 20 overs, Harry Swindells top-scoring with 36, Arron Lilley and Ben Mike each hitting 27.The Outlaws were forced to make three changes with Tom Moores unwell and both Joe Clarke and Sol Budinger obliged to wait for Covid tests after being alerted by the NHS app.An eventful Powerplay saw the Foxes post 47 for 2. They lost Scott Steel for a duck in the first over as Ben Duckett – keeping wicket for the absent Moores – showed neat glovework. Lilley survived on one as Fletcher and Lyndon James collided under a top-edged reverse-sweep and made them pay with 27 off 20 balls before he was yorked. They lost momentum after wickets fell in consecutive balls to Harrison, Josh Inglis finding long-off before Colin Ackermann chipped back to the bowler.Calvin Harrison was in the wickets•PA Images/Getty

Lewis Hill lofted sixes off Steven Mullaney and offspinner Matt Carter but was caught at midwicket off Fletcher, Rishi Patel was lbw sweeping as Harrison picked up his third wicket and Swindells misjudged a slower ball to be caught at mid-off. Naveen was run out and Fletcher was rewarded with wickets in his last two overs and though Mike clubbed two sixes off Ball, the Foxes’ total looked below par.Duckett, who hit Callum Parkinson to deep backward square, and Alex Hales, caught at point off Naveen-ul-Haq’s first ball, having just survived a run-out chance that saw Lilley ticked off for dissent. Peter Trego perished to a beauty from Naveen but 58 for 3 saw them ahead in the Powerplay.Patel was dropped at backward point on 10 off Naveen and at short midwicket on 26 off Steel, albeit both difficult chances, but he and Slater brought the target down to 71 at halfway. Slater had an escape when he was spilled at extra cover off Mike on 37.Slater missed out on a half-century, trapped in front by Parkinson, before Patel drove Naveen through the covers to finish the job.

Chelsea players who could still be sold before deadline day

£200k-per-week star prepared to leave Chelsea after message from Maresca

The Italian’s words have not gone down well.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 14, 2024

The Chelsea axe is swinging throughout Enzo Maresca's bloated squad, and it is highly anticipated that more interesting names could be set for the exit door before summer deadline day on August 30.

It is believed that left-back and sporadic captain Ben Chilwell is prepared to leave this summer as Premier League champions Man City register a loose interest, while Fabrizio Romano claims Raheem Sterling will be allowed to go if Joao Felix joins Chelsea.

As well as this, Napoli remain in talks over a deal for Romelu Lukaku, who has reportedly already agreed a three-year contract to reunite with Antonio Conte in Italy, and the transfer looks set to have a profound effect on Chelsea's interest in Victor Osimhen.

"Chelsea are in talks with Napoli over Victor Osimhen, whilst Romelu Lukaku has already agreed to a pay cut and a three-year contract to move to Naples," wrote GiveMeSport's Ben Jacobs on X recently.

"Napoli wanting Lukaku helps Chelsea, as does Osimhen putting pressure on Napoli to leave as soon as possible."

After Lukaku, Chilwell and Sterling, uncertainty also surrounds the futures of Angelo Gabriel, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher and Cesare Casadei, while it is widely reported that Southampton are closing in on a loan deal for Chelsea defender Lesley Ugochukwu.

After Boehly and BlueCo agreed the signing of Pedro Neto from Wolves last week, in a deal which could be worth up to £54 million including add-ons, questions are now being asked of winger Noni Madueke.

Chelsea hand Newcastle £10m discount as Howe eyes Madueke move

TEAMtalk reported earlier this week that Newcastle have held talks with Madueke's agents ahead of a potential swoop, with Chelsea valuing the 22-year-old at around £40 million.

That same outlet have now shared a further update, and they claim Howe could now sign the Englishman for less. TT write that Chelsea are open to selling Madueke for £30 million as Newcastle register their interest, 25 per cent less than first thought, with the Magpies potentially having to replace Miguel Almiron if the Paraguayan can seal a move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia.

It would be harsh on Madueke if Chelsea opt to sell, as the winger played a big role during the latter stages of 2023/2024 under Mauricio Pochettino. He started each of the Argentine's final nine Premier League games in charge, finishing the campaign with eight goals and three assists in all competitions.

However, Neto's arrival has put the "mentality monster" in a tough position when it comes to guaranteed game time this season, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for PSV Eindhoven's ex-rising star.

Terms agreed: Report claims £15m Gustavo Hamer has said yes to Leeds move

Leeds United have reportedly agreed personal terms with a £15m midfielder ahead of a potential dramatic late transfer to Elland Road.

Leeds summer signings so far

The Whites have lost a number of star players from Daniel Farke’s squad, bringing in more than £100m in exits for Archie Gray, Glen Kamara, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. In regards to incomings, Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell, Alex Cairns and Jayden Bogle all arrived in Yorkshire in good time for the new Championship season.

However, Leeds supporters had to wait a long time for the next arrival, with winger Largie Ramazani signing from Almeria last week. The Belgian will now be joined by another winger in Manor Solomon, who will move to Elland Road on a season-long loan. Solomon isn’t expected to be the final addition of the window, though, however, time is ticking until the Friday evening deadline.

A new midfielder and full-back are also wanted at Elland Road, according to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth, with Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer emerging as a target to bolster Farke’s midfield options.

Leeds could land “exciting” signing for Joseph in late move for EFL star

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing the attacking midfielder this week.

ByDan Emery Aug 26, 2024

Reports from The Star in recent days even claimed that Leeds have made a bid worth £13m for the Blades star, however, that was turned down with Wilder seemingly hitting out at the offer.

“There have been a couple of bids for players; one was pretty close and another was a million miles off. If and when decisions on players get made by the board then I'll get notified and we have to have a plan and be ready. It's a bit of me looking into the future and trying to see who potentially might go.”

Now, there has been a development with Hamer and Leeds.

Hamer agrees personal terms with Leeds

According to reports in the Netherlands, relayed by Sport Witness, Hamer has reached an agreement on personal terms with Leeds, who are negotiating a deal with Sheffield United for his services.

The Blades paid Coventry City £15m for Hamer last year when they were in the Premier League, so you’d expect Leeds will need to significantly improve their opening bid to stand any chance of signing the player.

The report relayed by SW adds that Sheffield United are willing to sanction a move, as long as Leeds put a ‘large sum’ on the table and that all parties involved in the deal are hopeful with the transfer ‘expected to be completed’ before the window shuts.

How accurate these claims from the Netherlands are remains to be seen, but signing Hamer, who can play as a holding, central or attacking midfielder, could be a brilliant piece of business due to his past experience with Coventry where he contributed to 43 goals in 132 appearances.

Leeds have just Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev and Rothwell as their senior central midfield options, showing how much they could benefit by signing someone like Hamer.
