With series on the line, deciding India-England ODI set up to be fitting tour finale

Excitement galore in Pune with series locked at 1-1

Do India need to change their batting approach?

Big pictureMore than seven weeks after England played their first day of cricket in India, it’s time for the finale of the tour. It’s a Sunday afternoon fixture, the ODI series is tied 1-1, and there’s everything to play for. What more do you want?Well, if you’re Virat Kohli, you want more from your spinners. In 35 overs, they’ve conceded 283 runs at an economy of 8.09 for just one wicket. Be it IPL experience or pure skill (or a combination of both), England’s batsmen have been supremely confident against the spinners. Some said dropping Kuldeep Yadav after one game would be too harsh on him, but now it seems like India have no choice. After spending a good period on the bench, it might be time for Yuzvendra Chahal to show why he should be the first spinner on the ODI teamsheet every time. And then there’s the dreaded ‘I’ word: intent. Par scores can’t simply be judged by the surface you’re playing on, but also by the opposition you’re against. India had a particular method in the T20Is. They threw caution to the wind while batting, even if it meant they lost two of the five games, but that template has gone out of the window in the ODIs. They’ll need the top order to either score quicker or start their late-overs surge earlier.Either way, the final ODI will be a test of India’s brand of batting, more so if Kohli has a hat-trick of losing the toss. Finding the gaps and running hard twos in the first 30 overs is usually fine, but against England, more boundary shots are needed from the top order. Friday’s target of 337 was chased down with 6.3 overs to spare and even in the first ODI, let’s be honest, England were well ahead of the game for the first 20 overs of the second innings.England’s batting remains their biggest strength. Their philosophy has remained unchanged, the openers are firing, Ben Stokes has been on a rampage and the injury-replacements have chipped in. They know the fast bowlers are inexperienced, more so if Mark Wood does not return for the decider, but that’s not in their control. However, they’ll be happy the way Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali have performed. At the start of the spells, they have done enough to ensure India don’t get on top of them, and the hosts are, perhaps, leaving some runs out there, by not going harder at the duo.Overall, it’s a fitting finale to the tour. The team that has lost the first match of every series has gone on to win it. That was India in the first two occasions, but can England complete their own comeback? If they do, it will be a gentle reminder of why they are world champions.Form guide(Last five completed matches first)
India: LWWLL
England: WLLWLEngland’s batting poses a clear and immense threat to any team they face•BCCI

In the spotlightWhen it’s a big game, expect to see a different version of Ben Stokes (remember Headingley and Lord’s 2019?). In the first ODI, his 3 for 34 broke Indian partnerships every time they looked to change gears. In the second game, he hit the fastest 99 in ODI history. India will be hoping Stokes’ numbers are a mere footnote in the match’s statistics because if it isn’t so, it’s likely his contributions will be match-winning. In the last game, his bowling numbers were under par and he could not get that one extra run to dedicate a century to his late father. He’ll be looking to change both those things.Hardik Pandya has not bowled in the series yet, leaving India with only five bowling options. But he did bowl in the T20Is, so even if Kohli uses Hardik for just four overs, it will reduce the load on the off-colour bowler and could be the missing piece in the Indian bowling jigsaw. There’s also more that Hardik, the batsman, can do. In the XI, he is one of the best hitters of spin and could do to Moeen and Rashid what Stokes did in the second ODI to Kuldeep and Krunal Pandya. If the top order has set up a solid base, it’s worth sending him above KL Rahul and push the envelope on what total India can achieve. He hit 35 off 16 balls last game. Extrapolate that score if he faced, say, 50 balls.Team newsAll India’s batting will be trying, is to add 10-15% more runs to their scores, so that part of the XI should stay unchanged. They could tinker with the bowling though, Chahal for Kuldeep being the likeliest change. Washington Sundar could also replace Krunal Pandya, after the latter conceded 72 in six overs on Friday, although there isn’t any evidence that Sundar would improve that. Among pacers, one of Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur could be replaced by T Natarajan, both for his left-handedness and for his ability to execute yorkers more consistently. Keeping Thakur gives the team more batting depth, which might be a consideration.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya/Washington Sundar, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Prasidh Krishna/T NatarajanWood was rested for the second ODI and could return in place of either Reece Topley or Tom Curran, the latter being more likely after conceding 83 runs in the last match. England will wait on the fitness of Sam Billings, who injured his collar bone in the first game, until match day.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Ben Stokes, 4 Dawid Malan, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Mark Wood/Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece TopleyPitch and conditionsWith not much in there for spinners, Pune is as ‘international’ a surface you can get in India. A good batting pitch in the afternoon turns into a great batting pitch in the evening. For the team batting first, aiming for scores in excess of 330 should be a bare minimum.Stats and trivia India are looking to avoid a third-straight ODI series defeat. They lost 1-2 in Australia and 0-3 in New Zealand. Dhawan needs 90 to become the 10th Indian to get 6000 ODI runs. Bairstow and Roy had hit 13 century stands as openers in ODI cricket, the most by an England pair and the fifth-highest among openers. In the last five matches at Pune, the average first-innings score has been 303.20 with the contests 3-2 in favour of the chasing side.Quotes”We’ve said for a while we want to play in a certain fashion and push the boundaries of what we’re capable of as a side. That’s probably what I was most proud of – we got some criticism from the first game but came out and played in exactly the same fashion, which rings true to us”
Jos Buttler promises that England will play the same way for the decider

Marnus Labuschagne makes Glamorgan return as a marked man

Welsh government regulations allow Labuschagne to play against Kent this week while quarantining

Matt Roller28-Apr-2021When Marnus Labuschagne arrived in Cardiff in 2019, he had made five Test appearances and was by no means guaranteed to play another: he averaged 26.25, had batted in five different positions, and had only played while David Warner and Steven Smith were banned. Ahead of his early-season stint with Glamorgan, few Division Two seamers were losing sleep over the prospect of bowling to him.Two years later, everything has changed. Labuschagne averages a shade above 60 in Tests, and is ranked as the third-best batter in the format by the ICC. County analysts and bowling coaches are scrambling to find plans as to how they can get him out, and on the back of hundreds in his last two first-class innings – including 192 in the Sheffield Shield final – he appears to be in the form of his life.Labuschagne has pinpointed that spell with Glamorgan as a “turning point” in his career that few saw coming. He made technical adjustments with Matthew Maynard, the club’s head coach, that helped him open up the leg side, and benefited from the opportunity to play a higher volume of cricket than had been available to him for Queensland; in 10 County Championship fixtures, he made 1114 runs at 65.52.”That stint at Glamorgan certainly helped me, and meant that when I got an opportunity, I was in form and I was batting well,” Labuschagne said on Wednesday, in a virtual press conference before his first appearance of the season against Kent. “The last time I was here I played pretty well but I think I can add more value to the team, and get better as a player each game – keep trying to grow as a player, not just in Australian conditions but in conditions that aren’t as familiar to myself.”You need to come in prepared and your game needs to adapt. You need to understand the conditions, the bowling, and what changes you’ll make to your own game to be successful and find ways to do well. You need to be prepared to change, and not get caught in trying to play one way. That’s what I enjoy most about the game: finding ways to keep performing even if you’re not feeling that good for whatever reason.”Related

Championship 'not classed as elite sport' as Stanlake made to wait

English cricket joins football's social media boycott

The high regard in which Australians hold county cricket is evident from Labuschagne highlighting the challenge of playing against Division One sides this season. The re-jigged Championship format means that four out of Glamorgan’s five opponents in Group Three should have been playing Division One cricket last year before the pandemic, meaning a higher calibre of opposition than he faced in 2019. He is likely to come up against James Anderson next week, and may have the chance to face Sussex’s Ollie Robinson later in the season, too.”The way the Championship is set up this year with three groups, four of the six teams in our group are Division One teams which is a really nice challenge,” he said, “being able to challenge yourself at a different level and with different skills required in these conditions.”It’s a real plus being able to play in swinging conditions, and obviously the English bowlers will be coming out this summer to Australia and playing over there [so] the potential to play against them in the County Championship is obviously a really good challenge. If you’re playing Jimmy Anderson now, it’s a challenge in these conditions, but when he comes to Australia, it gives me a look at him a bit earlier, which is the positive.”Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser have arrived in Wales•Glamorgan CCC

Labuschagne’s availability this week is due to a discrepancy in Covid regulations between the English and Welsh governments. While other Australians – including Billy Stanlake, Labuschagne’s Queensland team-mate – are unable to leave quarantine, Labuschagne is allowed to for the purposes of “elite sport” under Wales’ restrictions, though cannot yet go out for dinner, for example. Michael Neser, Glamorgan’s other overseas signing and another of Labsuchagne’s Queensland team-mates, will not debut until next week as the club look to manage his bowling workload, while Andy Balbirnie has returned to Ireland after deputising for Labuschagne.Glamorgan are not yet certain how much they will see of Labuschagne, with Australia due to tour the Caribbean and, potentially, Bangladesh later in the year for limited-overs series. His contract covers all formats and runs until the end of next season, and he admitted he is keen to play as much of the T20 Blast as possible, having played only 16 matches in his T20 career to date.”The potential to play 14 Blast games – which is almost double what I’ve played in my career – is exciting because that’s a part of my game that I haven’t had much of an opportunity to develop,” he said. “It’s a completely different format but the approach is still a thought-out one. I definitely want to play for Australia in all formats, but it’s hard to make a case to play T20 cricket for Australia on the back of 14 [16] career games.”

Emery’s pushing: Aston Villa working on signing Konsa 2.0 in £35m star

Aston Villa might well look to add to the eight signings they have made so far this summer before Friday’s transfer deadline. Ahead of a return to the Champions League, the Villans have looked to bolster their squad in all areas this summer, with their marquee signing being a £50m move for Amadou Onana from Everton.

With just over 24 hours left before the 2024 summer window slams shut, Unai Emery’s side have been linked with one player who could add quality and experience to their squad before they return to European football’s most elite club competition.

Aston Villa target Eredivisie defender

The player in question here is Feyenoord and Netherlands international defender Lutsharel Geertruida. According to a report from Graeme Bailey, the 24-year-old is a key target for Emery, who ‘has made clear to Monchi’ that he wants to sign the defender before tomorrow’s deadline.

Feyenoord's Lutsharel Geertruida

Bailey reports that a price of £35m would be enough to get a deal over the line, with 'confidence' remaining that the move can be completed, albeit with the need for Monchi to make room in the squad.

That said, the Villans are now facing competition from RB Leipzig in the race for the defender, with it yet to be seen just whether he will end up at Villa Park this summer.

Why Geertruida would be a good signing

The Dutchman was a crucial player under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot last season in his native Netherlands. He played 34 times in the top flight, scoring eight goals and registering five assists, an impressive return. He was an ever-present in the Rotterdam side’s victorious Dutch Cup campaign, too.

One of the biggest strengths of the Feyenoord academy graduate is his versatility. He can play right across the back four, which might well make him such an attractive prospect for Emery and Villa this summer. Last season, he played 35 times at right-back, nine times at centre-back and even three games at left-back.

Not only that, but the Dutchman can also bring more leadership to Emery's side. He captained the Dutch giants on 25 occasions last season and was described as a "leader" by football analyst Ben Mattinson. One thing is for sure, you can never have too many leaders, and this experience could be crucial for Villa to lean on next season.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is statistically comparable to one of Emery’s crucial defenders at Villa Park, Ezri Konsa, who played 35 times in the Premier League last season. According to FBref, the pair are similar players statistically, and it means the Spaniard could have the second coming of the England international in his side.

Where the pair are most comparable is from a defensive point of view. The FBref stats suggest they are neck-and-neck in terms of all-round ability, with Geertruida last season averaging 5.38 ball recoveries and 2.37 combined tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes. In comparison, the Villa number four averaged 4.16 ball recoveries and 2.4 tackles and interceptions.

Where the Feyenoord defender edges it over the England international is his ball-playing abilities. By no means is this a weak point of Konsa’s game, but his stats are far lower than the Dutchman. Last term, Geertruida averaged a whooping 7.93 progressive passes and 2,54 progressive carries each game, compared to 3.99 progressive passes and 1.09 progressive carries.

It is worth considering that the in-possession stats for the Feyenoord number four have been boosted by the fact he spent large parts of last season playing right-back, a position where he would naturally progress play more regularly.

Lutsharel Geertruida for the Netherlands.

For a fee of around £35m, singing Geertruida could cap off an excellent window for the Villans. They would bring in a very similar player to Konsa, plus add someone with impressive versatility into the squad. It could be an extremely smart move by Villa, who have a huge season ahead.

The technical committee also warned Elias Sunny after a hearing on Wednesday evening

Legends of Rupganj batter Sabbir Rahman and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club manager Sultan Mahmud have been fined BDT 50,000 (US $590 approx.) for their involvement in an incident on June 16 at the BKSP. Although the BCB’s press release didn’t mention what the incident was, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club had lodged a complaint against Rahman after their match against Old DOHS Sports Club at the BKSP-3 ground on Wednesday.Rahman had arrived at the ground to play Rupganj’s DPL T20 match against Partex Sporting Club at the BKSP-4 ground when he allegedly racially abused and threw stones at Elias Sunny, who was fielding at the time. Rahman had allegedly also racially abused Sunny during their June 13 match. The technical committee held a hearing on Wednesday evening, after which they also warned Sunny.”After an extensive hearing session the Technical Committee has decided to take the following disciplinary measures: fine of BDT 50,000.00 each for Shabbir Rahaman of Legends of Rupganj and Sheikh Jamal’s Manager Sultan Mahmud.”Sunny had told ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday that Rahman had abused him during the June 13 match, and the June 16 incidents were a continuation of that.”Sabbir started abusing me when I was batting against Rupganj on June 13,” Sunny said. “I asked him thrice whether he himself understood what he was saying, but he kept repeating it. I got angry, after which the umpires had to separate us. But he kept calling me “kalo” (black, referring to his skin colour) repeatedly from the outfield. We won the match so I didn’t react too much.”During today’s (Wednesday’s) match, when we were fielding, Rupganj’s bus had arrived near the BKSP 3 ground. He started teasing me with the same “kalo, kalo“. I didn’t react at first. But shortly afterwards, he threw a stone at me. I maintained the protocol by telling the umpires. Play was stopped for a while. I also spoke to the match referee.”This is Rahman’s latest misdemeanour after he was banned for six months for abusing a fan on social media and lost his national contract for beating up a fan during a first-class game in 2018. He also lost half his BPL salary in 2015 for a serious breach of discipline.

Cost £12.8m: Leeds could now lose “immense” star for nothing

Leeds United, despite dominating the possession at a weighty 71.3% and bettering Burnley in terms of shots, still fell to their first defeat of the Championship season last time out.

Scott Parker’s Clarets managed to get the better of Daniel Farke’s wasteful Whites courtesy of a counter-attack goal by Luca Koleosho, with the one-time Wolverhampton Wanderers target’s strike the difference on the day, as the likes of Mateo Joseph and Wilfried Gnonto fluffed their own opportunities for the hosts.

The manner of the defeat will sting for Farke and Co, but it’s unlikely that wholesale changes will be needed moving forward, with players such as Junior Firpo in particular having a standout start to the campaign regardless of this narrow 1-0 loss.

Firpo's resurgence at Leeds

The former Barcelona man continues to look like a resurgent figure in the Leeds first team, having once found his footing at Elland Road to be on shaky foundations, after a dismal time of things in the Premier League, having been relegated with the side in the 2022/23 campaign.

Since dropping down to the Championship, however, the Dominican Republic international has shone brightly, with his creativity from down the left a massive plus.

Crysencio Summerville in action for Leeds United in the Championship.

Last campaign, alongside the skills of Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville to name a few, Firpo would pick up an impressive seven assists from 27 regular season contests, alongside also helping himself to six clean sheets.

His willingness to burst forward and create openings has helped the Whites out during the infancy of this fresh season too, with Firpo galloping forward to assist Joel Piroe’s late strike against Hull City, which helped his side close out August with a comfortable 2-0 victory before Burnley soured the mood in West Yorkshire.

The rejuvenated Leeds number three did try and unlock the Clarets in a similar manner but was met by a resilient Burnley defence, as the 28-year-old trudged off the pitch with only one key pass next to his name come full-time.

There will be concerns about Firpo’s future around Elland Road now, with his contract up next June, and he already has clubs circling for his services.

Junior Firpo

Firpo's future at Leeds

There will be some grave concerns in the air as Firpo might well exit West Yorkshire for £0 if everything isn’t resolved shortly, with TEAMTalk revealing that one of his former employers in Real Betis is keen to win his services for zilch.

With his deal at Leeds entering into its final six months in January, he could well agree a pre-contract agreement with another side and then leave on a free transfer in the summer, which would be a nightmare situation for Farke and Co.

Although his value has fallen year on year he’s been at Leeds, with his valuation now standing at a low £1.9m compared to his original £12.8m fee, it would still be a sad state of affairs for the Whites if Firpo was to just leave for nothing.

His value could also increase over the next couple of months if he can keep up his electric displays in attack, which might – in tow – lead to his side tasting promotion.

Junior Firpo

Labelled as “immense” in the past by Leeds content creator Conor McGilligan, it would be a devastating end to his time in West Yorkshire if another club did poach him for £0 and an almighty blunder, given his impressive performances in the Championsnhip.

Before any of that happens, however, Firpo will no doubt just be keen to kick on and help his side in their aim to win promotion, as bottom of the table Cardiff City await Farke’s men next as the perfect way to bounce back, after the demoralising defeat to Burnley.
