Keaton Jennings, Alex Davies rise above Roses anxieties to deliver big-match performance

Steve Patterson’s decision at the toss leads to long day in the field for the home side

Lancashire 273 for 2 (Jennings 132, Davies 84) vs YorkshireNothing upstages a Roses match. Ask a good few Yorkshiremen of more mature years where they were on the afternoon when England won the World Cup in 1966 and they will inform you they were in enemy territory watching their side make 50 for 3 against Lancashire at Old Trafford. “It bloody rained,” they might add, “but then it’s Manchester.” They might omit to tell you that one of the dismissed batsmen was G Boycott (c Worsley b Lever 0) although they will probably include in their recollection the fact that Yorkshire won the match by 12 runs, Ray Illingworth taking 5 for 33.Now, though, it is the vivid present and on a cloudy Leeds afternoon Steve Patterson is trying to make the breakthrough his team desperately need. Brian Close led Yorkshire to the first of a hat-trick of Championships 55 years ago and winning the title would not mean a scruple less to Patterson than it did to the “old bald blighter”, as Alan Gibson called him. But things are not going well. Having decided just before the toss to bowl instead of bat – his decision was apparently prompted by the overhead conditions rather than James Anderson’s presence in Lancashire’s team – Patterson is watching Alex Davies and Keaton Jennings share a stand of 163 for the first wicket. The ground is heavy with incipience and for many Yorkshire supporters it takes the form of anxiety as they worry whether this will be the first season since 2011 in which their side will lose both Roses games. Then Jordan Thompson, who is rapidly becoming a White Rose standard-bearer, brings one back off the seam to Davies, who is lbw for a fine 84. “Maybe this changes things,” think the crowd. “Maybe.”Or maybe not. Yorkshire took only one more wicket on this opening day of the game. The triumph was claimed by Thompson who accepted a chipped return catch off Jennings but by then the opener had become the 13th Lancashire batsman to score two first-class centuries against Yorkshire in the same season and had joined a list that includes Archie MacLaren, Cyril Washbrook and Mike Atherton. But let us resist the lure of the past. Jennings’ 132 had included four fours in seven deliveries from Dom Leech, whose short spell with the second new ball was something of a punishment. The Lancashire opener hit 15 fours and a six in his 335-minute innings, almost every one of the boundaries being scored on the off side in the mighty segment than stretches from third man to straight down the ground. By the close Lancashire were 273 for 2 and the decision to bowl looked like a foolish impulse. Lancashire would have batted although it was a close call. The verdict of hindsight is one of the travails of captaincy. Patterson probably knows it. So did Close, not that he would ever admit so much.Related

But this was also a fine day for Davies, a player who ‘gets’ professional county cricket and has done so from his first day in the job. Davies made his debut, two days short of his 17th birthday, almost a decade ago in a 40-over match against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay. He conceded no byes as the home side piled up 328 for 4; in addition he chivvied his bowlers to greater effort at every opportunity. Standing next to him at slip, the 25-year-old Tom Smith enquired as the debutant’s age and suddenly felt rather ancient.Davies’s initials are A L and so it has been “Al” since his first few weeks in Lancashire’s dressing room, a place in which he belonged almost at once. He is the combative bantam-weight at Emirates Old Trafford; he bats like a man unvisited by regrets and on days like this he has nothing to repent. Davies’ punched cover-drives and thumps through midwicket proclaimed his simple philosophy of life quite as eloquently as anything he might say, not that he is reluctant to express opinions on the game. Before the last Roses match he said that Yorkshire “are not the team they used to be” and he will have no doubt regarded Lancashire’s innings victory in May as a thumping vindication of his judgement. Now, with his side in the seven and six seats once again, Davies is no doubt savouring the possibility of inflicting another hammering on Yorkshire. It is close of play and nearly eight hours since Patterson won his ninth toss in ten Championship games this season. In the first hour of play Yorkshire’s new-ball pairing, Ben Coad and Leech were a trifle unlucky, details that may appear in a coach’s notebook but not in the scorecards that will still be studied when another 55 years have passed. Let us hope they are studied anyway. For the moment there is only this moment. Chants can already be heard coming from The Headingley Taps and not even Emmott Robinson would fool himself they concern cricket. The air is thick with the unfenced emotional intensity of another sport.

£18 million Aston Villa star could be sidelined with McGinn through injury

Aston Villa could be without another player following his own injury, which would result in him being on the sidelines with midfielder John McGinn, after the latter was forced off during their 3-1 win over Wolves on Saturday.

Aston Villa beat Wolves in Midlands derby

Unai Emery was a happy man on the touchline as his Villa side continued their impressive start to the season with victory in the Midlands Derby.

Wolves did threaten to upset the home side, after striker Matheus Cunha gave them a surprise lead just past the 20-minute mark. It wasn’t exactly plain sailing, with Gary O’Neil’s men holding that advantage for a large portion of the game as well.

It took until the last 15 minutes before Villa managed to grab an equaliser, thanks to star frontman Ollie Watkins, who opened the floodgates for Emery’s side to battle their way to a Premier League victory.

Defender Ezri Konsa fired them into the lead just minutes from added time, with striker Jhon Duran then continuing his own impressive start to 2024/2025. The Colombian notched Villa’s third in the 94th minute and sealed all three points on derby day, but the win prompted a mix response from Emery.

“We want to win matches easier than we did,” said Emery on Villa’s win over Wolves.

“We are showing how difficult it is to win in the Premier League – last week against Everton.

“We were suffering in the first half but the second half was completely different. I am very happy because we won. It was very important we changed our energy and we played to win in the second half.”

One real downside of the afternoon, though, was in the form of midfielder John McGinn and his injury. The 29-year-old has started all five of their Premier League matches so far and is a crucial cog in Emery’s midfield, having also bagged six goals and four assists in 35 top flight starts last term.

McGinn was forced off with a hamstring injury against Wolves, and Emery has claimed he will be sidelined for the next few weeks.

“It’s his hamstring,” Emery said to reporters.

In January against Tottenham he had a hamstring injury as well. He will not be available I think for a few weeks.”

Jaden Philogene could be sidelined with McGinn at Villa

As per Birmingham World, another player who could be sidelined alongside McGinn, Boubacar Kamara, Matty Cash and Tyrone Mings is winger Jaden Philogene.

The winger, signed from Hull City in the summer for £18 million, missed out against Wolves through injury. It is believed Philogene could miss out against Wycombe as well, given the short turnaround between games, so their EFL Cup clash tonight may come too soon.

Jaden Philogene for the England U21s

Not having the Englishman available would be a slight frustration for Emery, as this evening’s tie would be an ample opportunity to start the highly promising winger.

“Ridiculous, it’s ridiculous, his ability is something we have missed for a long time,” said ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior to Sky Sports earlier this year.

“He is only going to get better the more games he plays.”

E seguiu o placar zerado.

DRAGÃO DÁ AS CARAS E VENCE

Txiki considering £83m Man City bid to sign "exceptional" big name player

Manchester City are considering tabling a huge £83m+ offer for an “exceptional” new attacker, according to an eye-catching new transfer report.

Man City still top after Arsenal drama

Pep Guardiola’s side played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, as they just about managed to stay top of the Premier League table. Having taken the lead through a brilliant Erling Haaland goal, things unravelled for City when Rodri picked up what looked like a serious injury. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel turned the game on its head, but thankfully, John Stones equalised in the dying seconds after a painful second half.

It means the Cityzens top the pile by a point ahead of Liverpool and Aston Villa, as well as retaining their two-point advantage over Arsenal, with Guardiola’s men still very much the team to beat in the title race this season.

Away from the on-pitch action, players continue to be linked with moves to the Etihad, with 17-year-old Sporting CP ace Geovany Quenda reportedly being eyed up as a long-term replacement for Bernardo Silva. Meanwhile, Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has been backed to move to City in a swap deal involving Haaland, but it would surely be a shock if the striker left any time soon.

Man City considering £83m+ bid for Musiala

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City are weighing up making an £83m+ bid for Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, having been linked with him during the summer transfer window.

The Premier League champions are said to be “firmly in the race” to snap up the Germany international, with Real Madrid providing stern competition. It is the Blues who are described as the “most informed” team in the report, however, suggesting Txiki Begiristain stands a good chance of getting his man.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Musiala is one of the world’s most exciting young players currently, so the idea of him joining Guardiola at City is so exciting. The 21-year-old already has three goals in four appearances in the Bundesliga this season, while Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has heaped praise on him.

“Jamal Musiala is a world-class player, an exceptional player. Jamal is a player that spectators go to the stadium for because of the way he plays. He can decide games, he’s an absolute team player. He is an exceptional player. He can become one of the best players in the world. Both FC Bayern and Germany are lucky to have him.”

Meanwhile, Ilkay Gundogan is believed to want Musiala with him at City, following his return to the club on loan from Barca, and there really are few negatives to them snapping him up.

Worse than Dias: Pep must drop 3/10 Man City star who had a "stinker"

The Cityzens defender could find himself out of the team after that performance.

1 ByDan Emery Sep 22, 2024

Assuming he avoids serious injury, there is no reason why the Bayern maestro can’t go on to have a legendary career, and he would be an upgrade on the likes of Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish on the left wing, given his status as a truly world-class footballer with years ahead of him.

Allrounder Sikandar Raza is back for Zimbabwe following four months on the sidelines while he recovered from a serious bone-marrow infection. Raza was picked in a squad of 16 that will take on Bangladesh at home in a three-match ODI series from July 16.Also returning to squad are pacer Tendai Chatara, who last played for Zimbabwe in November 2020 in Pakistan where he picked up an injury to his right upper-arm, and batter Ryan Burl who is back after a knee sprain.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sean Williams and Craig Ervine, who were self-isolating during the one-off Test that preceded the ODI series, having come in contact with Covid-19-positive family members, are not back yet. A Zimbabwe Cricket media release said, “Although the duo returned negative coronavirus test results this week, the ZC medical team is making frantic efforts to ensure the two senior players first complete further health and fitness assessments before they can be allowed to join the squad in the bio-secure bubble.”Brendan Taylor will captain the squad, which includes three batters who are uncapped in ODIs in Tadiwanashe Marumani, Dion Myers and Milton Shumba. Another inclusion of note is pacer Luke Jongwe, who returns to the one-day set-up after more than five years, though he has been a part of the Test and T20I sides in the interim.

Raza’s infection was at one point suspected to be cancerous. He underwent surgery on April 2 to remove a tumour, and the subsequent biopsies came back negative ruling out cancer. He had first felt severe pain in his right arm during the Zimbabwe-Afghanistan series in Abu Dhabi in March this year and, after returning to Harare, saw a specialist. Tests revealed it was more serious than just regular muscle pain, triggering urgent treatment and a long recuperation. The ODI series against Bangladesh is part of the ICC’s Super League, which is a major qualification route to the 2023 World Cup, adding extra context to proceedings for both teams.Related

Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal voiced surprise that Zimbabwe had delayed naming their squad for this series, saying on the eve of the first ODI that it was hard for his team to plan. “We don’t know whom we are playing with,” Iqbal said. “It is less than 24 hours before the first ball being bowled, we don’t know about the team yet.”It is a little different that we don’t know about their team. Normally this is the time when you have batting and bowling meetings, but I don’t know whom we are going to do the meetings about. It is kind of surprising.”

Rodgers must drop Bernardo to unleash Celtic’s "absolutely brilliant" star

Celtic are back in action in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon as they travel away from Glasgow to take on Ross County in the noon kick-off.

This is the seventh game of the league season and the last one before the October international break, which means that the Hoops have a chance to head into the next two weeks off on a high.

Brendan Rodgers will surely be desperate for a strong reaction from his players after the hugely disappointing result in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Celtic, who had won their opening nine games of the season in all competitions, were beaten 7-1 by Bundesliga giants Dortmund in Germany, and found themselves 5-1 down at half-time.

It was a poor performance from the Scottish giants, who had beaten Slovan 5-1 in their first game, and one that they will want to put behind them quickly, with a strong showing against Ross County today.

Rodgers could look to make some changes to the starting XI from the defeat to Dortmund, after a number of players underwhelmed, and Paulo Bernardo is one player who could lose his place in the team.

Paulo Bernardo's performance in numbers

The Portugal U21 international started his first match in the Champions League this season, after being on the bench against Slovan, and struggled in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, the former Benfica dynamo was unable to make his mark on the game and did not do enough to suggest to Rodgers that he is ready, at this moment in time, to start in big European clashes, albeit the same could be said of many players after a 7-1 defeat.

The central midfielder was given a player rating of 3/10 by the Daily Record, who wrote that he was ‘taught a lesson’ as part of the Celtic midfield, and Rodgers seemingly agreed that it was a poor display, as he was removed from the side at the interval.

Bernardo struggled in and out of possession for the Scottish giants as Dortmund ran riot in the opening 45 minutes, scoring five of their seven goals in that time.

The 22-year-old maestro only had 12 touches and completed six passes in 45 minutes on the pitch, failing to create a single chance for his teammates, and this illustrates his lack of impact on the ball for Celtic. He could not get free to pick up the ball and make things happen, as the German side overran the Hoops midfield.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Bernardo also ended the half and his performance with zero tackles, clearances, blocks, and interceptions, whilst he was also dribbled past once. This shows that he did virtually nothing to help his team out defensively, as the midfielder failed to disrupt the Dortmund attacks to stop the flow of goals.

Rodgers must now ruthlessly bin the midfielder from the starting XI for this clash with Ross County and bring Reo Hatate back into the line-up.

The Japan international came off the bench in the second half against Dortmund and completed 22 passes, whilst also making one clearance and one interception.

Why Reo Hatate should start

Hatate is a proven Premiership performer who the manager knows can come straight into the team to produce a brilliant performance against Ross County today.

The 26-year-old star is an attack-minded midfielder who can push forward from the middle of the park to make things happen in the final third, with goals and chances created.

As you can see in the table above, the midfield wizard has already racked up six goals and ‘big chances’ created in six appearances in the division this term, and has been unfortunate not to have registered an assist thus far.

The Japanese maestro, who was once hailed as “absolutely brilliant” by journalist Josh Bunting, also managed three goals and four assists in 16 appearances in the division during the 2023/24 campaign.

Hatate has been on the bench in the last two matches for Celtic and should now be brought back into the starting XI to add to his collection of attacking contributions against Ross County, after Bernardo’s poor showing on Tuesday night.

The midfield battle for Celtic

The midfield battle to land the third starting spot next to Arne Engels and Callum McGregor is an interesting one, as Bernardo and Hatate are fighting it out to secure a place in the XI each week.

Luke McCowan, who has scored one goal in three appearances off the bench for Celtic so far, is also in the mix and could push on for a spot in the lineup if he can prove to Rodgers that he has what it takes to be a reliable option in the middle of the park.

Hatate and Bernardo have both already proven that they have the quality to be fantastic operators in midfield for the Hoops in the Premiership, as shown by their respective statistics in the division this season.

As you can see in the table above, both players have created at least three ‘big chances’ and got on the scoresheet from a central midfield position.

Bernardo, however, has offered more to the team out of possession, winning 59% of his duels and making 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game, at Premiership level. That defensive quality was not on display against Dortmund, though, and Rodgers will be hoping that it was a one-off from the Portuguese whiz.

For now, though, Hatate should be awarded a place back in the XI after he outperformed Bernardo off the bench in Germany and a strong performance against Ross County this afternoon could make the position his to lose in the coming weeks after the break.

Celtic signed Abada instead of "flamboyant" star who's now worth £21m

The Hoops were unable to secure a deal to sign the talented youngster at the time.

Léo chegou a atuar em algumas partidas do time sub-23.
