Eoin Morgan will make decision on his future himself, says Chris Silverwood

“I think he brings so much more than just the batting” – England coach says of white-ball captain

Eoin Morgan is the only man who can determine his future as England’s limited-overs captain and he was already making plans for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia on the bus back from Abu Dhabi to Dubai after their defeat to New Zealand, Chris Silverwood has said.England lost by five wickets with an over to spare in Wednesday’s semi-final, thanks to a late surge from James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell, after which Morgan insisted that he would continue in the role in spite of his poor form with the bat this year. Silverwood, England’s head coach, gave Morgan carte blanche to stay on, saying that “the longer he is there, the better”.”He’s got to make that decision himself,” Silverwood said on Thursday. “Morgs and I talk a lot. We are always chatting away. Even last night on the coach on the way back, his mind had already gone on to the next [World Cup], what do we need to do, what are we looking for. As soon as those conversations start, in my mind, that is it for us: he’s in. He wants it, and he wants to lead. I think he will make his mind up when he’s ready.”He’s a very strong leader, and has been for many years now. I still think he’s got a lot of years in front of him that he can give to this team, and this team enjoy having him at the front. I think we are a stronger unit for it. We’ve seen that, at stages in the tournament, he has slipped down the order to let others put their mark on the game. I think that’s testament to what a good leader he is. For me, the longer he is there, the better.”He probably hasn’t got the runs he wanted, but the value he brings as a leader outweighs that. That’s how I see it. What he brings to the team from a tactical point of view, a motivational point of view and from the way he gets all the players and staff to buy in behind him and to follow him… I think he brings so much more than just the batting.”Related

England cut contrasting figures as end of an era looms for golden generation

Silverwood said that England were “hurting” after having their place in the final “snatched away” from them but that he took pride in their performances across the World Cup in the absence of three important players in Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Ben Stokes, with Tymal Mills and Jason Roy ruled out later in the tournament and that the same core would be in Australia next year.”I’m not going to lie – it would have been nice to have had Tymal out there, or bring in Archer. But at the same time we did have strength on the bench,” Silverwood said. “It does show a depth of talent, which is very encouraging. A lot of people will be better for the experience.”At the same time, we have got a group of lads who are hurting, which you can understand as well. To get so close, touching distance, and then to have it snatched away… we had the game under control for a lot of the time, [but Neesham] came in and played some exceptional shots, made life difficult for us.”We have a lot of talent. It [the next World Cup] comes in such a short period of time – it’s not like it’s in three or four years’ time. I don’t think age particularly comes into this one. We have got a good pool of players that we are picking from… I imagine everyone will be throwing their hat in the ring.”England’s multi-format players – Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood – will fly out of Dubai this weekend on a charter flight with the Australia squad, along with most of the coaching staff at the World Cup. Silverwood, whose appointment in 2019 was intended to signal an increased focus on Test cricket rather than white-ball formats, maintained that he was the right man to coach England’s limited-overs sides.”It does keep me very busy, but at the same time I’m enjoying the role,” he said. “You’re involved in everything, you’re an integral part of it and that’s exactly what you want and you want to have the ability to effect change if you can and try and bring some success and help the players. The big one for me is to make sure that myself, the coaching staff, all of us are helping the players to be in the best place possible to go out there and perform and live their dreams. That’s what I enjoy doing, so for the moment I’m fine.”

Michael Gough, the English umpire, will no longer officiate in the ongoing men’s T20 World Cup 2021, following a breach of the tournament’s bio-security protocols. Gough has just finished serving a six-day suspension and though he was initially expected to return, the ICC said he would be pulled out keeping his “wellbeing” in mind.”The ICC recognises the extended periods he has spent in bio-secure conditions over the past two years and will continue to support the wellbeing of all match officials operating in this environment,” the body said in a statement on Wednesday.Gough had to be suspended from his duties during the tournament for a six-day period starting October 28 following “a breach of the event bio-security protocols”.The sanction from the ICC came after Gough left his hotel without permission and went outside the tournament’s bio-bubble. He missed one game as a result, the October 31 fixture between India and New Zealand in Dubai, when South African Marais Erasmus stood in his place.Gough’s next game had earlier been scheduled for November 4, between Sri Lanka and West Indies in Abu Dhabi. He had been slotted to officiate in two games during the warm-up phase prior to the tournament, two games in the first round and eight games during the Super 12s. Four of those games – Australia vs South Africa on October 23 in Abu Dhabi, Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on October 24, Afghanistan vs Scotland on October 25 in Sharjah, and Pakistan vs New Zealand on October 26 in Sharjah – had been completed before the breach.Gough had two more games marked against his name in the group phase after the November 4 assignment: Australia vs West Indies in Abu Dhabi on November 6, and Afghanistan vs New Zealand, also in Abu Dhabi, on November 7. Replacements for Gough have not been named yet.

£120k-per-week Tottenham player could now completely terminate his contract

A member of Ange Postecoglou’s squad could now look to completely terminate his contract at Tottenham, with the player searching for a route out of N17 early doors.

Players who look set to leave Spurs in 2025

As Postecoglou and co look to build on their momentum from the last seven days with a win against Galatasaray this evening – fresh off the back of impressive victories against Man City and Aston Villa – uncertainty surrounds the futures of a good few players heading into the turn of the year.

Tottenham considering loan deal for "class" Real Madrid player in January

Spurs are very keen on him.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 6, 2024

Quartet Sergio Reguilon, Ben Davies, Fraser Forster and Alfie Whiteman are all out of contract next summer, meaning they’re set to depart N17 on free transfers unless Spurs opt to sit at the negotiating table and discuss extensions.

Reguilon is attracting interest from La Liga, as Spanish top-flight sides like Getafe sense a potential opportunity to snap him up at zero cost. The 27-year-old, formerly of Real Madrid, is not in Postecoglou’s plans – failing to make a single Premier League or Europa League matchday squad this season, despite still training with the first team.

Davies will be in his eleventh year at Tottenham by the time his contract runs out, with the Wales international likely to end his long stint at the club in 2025 following many seasons of faithful service.

Son Heung-min’s deal expires next year as well, but Spurs have the option to trigger a one-year extension clause in his contract, which they’re apparently set to do as Postecoglou definitely cannot afford to lose the South Korea star.

A decision is yet to be made on whether Timo Werner will stay beyond his season-long loan spell, but as things stand, the 28-year-old is more likely than not to make a return to RB Leipzig at the end of this season.

Tottenham are leaning towards letting Werner go, rather than activating the £8.5 million buy-out clause in his deal, amid criticism surrounding his wasteful finishing in front of goal.

Spurs will also make a decision over loaning out Archie Gray in January. The English sensation, who arrived from Leeds for around £40 million in the summer, has struggled to establish himself as a Premier League starter and is mainly utilised as a bit-part cup player by Postecoglou.

Sergio Reguilon could look to terminate Tottenham contract

Now, according to Spanish news outlet Ficherio, Reguilon could look to terminate his Tottenham contract and leave before next summer.

His former side Sevilla are considering Reguilon as a replacement for Valentin Barco at left-back, who could be sent back to Brighton, with Spurs’ want-away defender potentially coming in to take his spot under Garcia Pimienta.

Serge Reguilon in action for Tottenham.

On a reported £120,000-per-week in north London, according to the MEN, Reguilon could be seen as a serious drain on the wage bill right now considering his outcast status in the squad.

Terminating his deal early and allowing the Spaniard to leave for Sevilla could benefit all parties, so it will be interesting to see if this drastic action is taken up in the next few weeks leading to January.

Aston Villa had the original version of Duran, then Emery sold him for £2m

Aston Villa have got a long history of unleashing deadly strikers at the club throughout the Premier League era. Of course, one of those is playing in Claret and Blue now, namely Ollie Watkins.

The England international has scored 75 goals and has 29 assists in 184 games. Going back a bit further, there was Christian Benteke. The Belgian marksman scored 49 goals and had 13 assists to his name in just 101 games.

In the 1990s, Dwight Yorke was the main man up front at Villa Park. He was sensational for the club, and his form earned him a big move to Manchester United in 1998, where he won the treble. Dion Dublin was his replacement, and the Englishman was just as clinical in front of goal.

Next in line for that list of esteemed Villa strikers could well be Jhon Duran, who is on fire at Villa Park this term.

Duran’s Villa career

Duran’s rise to the top at Villa Park has been nothing short of astronomical. The 20-year-old joined the club in the winter transfer window of 2023, in a deal worth £18m from MLS side Chicago Fire.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

So far, the young striker has played 66 games in that famous Claret and Blue shirt, scoring 16 goals. Whilst that might not seem a lot on the face of it, it is important to reference the fact Duran has played just 1834 minutes. That equates to just 20.3 full 90 minute games, meaning on average he scores almost one goal per 90 minutes.

He is yet to start in the top flight this term, having started just three times in the Premier League across his whole Villa career. Thus, the centre-forward, who has four goals in 11 league matches so far this season, has earned himself a reputation as a super-sub. In fact, of the eight goals he has in all competitions, Duran has scored only three as a starter.

The Colombian knows how to put on a show. He has scored some spectacular goals this term, including one against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, a lob over Manuel Neuer’s head from just inside the penalty area, and a screamer against Everton from distance.

As good as Duran is, there may be a bit of regret at the club that another talented striker did not make it at Villa

Aston Villa's original Jhon Duran

The player in question here is centre-forward Keinan Davis. The 26-year-old – who is also a towering, left-footed striker like Duran at 6 foot 3 – came through the ranks at Villa Park after joining from non-league side Biggleswade, with the early signs certainly looking promising.

Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis.

In 2017, ESPN broke the news that Davis, who was 19 years of age at the time, was wanted by some of the biggest clubs in English football. The report suggested that Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton, amongst others, were tracking the youngster, who was ‘highly regarded at Villa Park’.

The Stevenage-born marksman – who scored ten goals in 36 games at U21 level for the Villans – even made his first-team debut for the club at the age of just 18, while later earning notable praise from teammate Jack Grealish, who called him “absolutely unplayable” in training.

The praise went even further, with former Villa star Alan Hutton stating in 2020 that Davis has “everything to be a top centre-forward“, even if his role was somewhat limited.

Sadly, things did not quite work out for the centre-forward at the Villans. Over a span of five seasons, the attacker made 86 appearances, scoring six goals and grabbing seven assists in that time, managing just one goal in the Premier League, in 2020/21.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Following reasonably successful loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Watford, who were both Championship clubs at the time, Davis made the move permanently away from Villa Park in 2023, with Unai Emery in charge of the club. Like with Duran in the present day to some degree, the challenge of ousting Watkins as the leading man in attack was ultimately too much.

As reported by The Athletic, he joined Udinese in Serie A for just £2m, in a deal which included a sell-on clause of between 15% and 20%

Sadly, Davis has struggled with injury in Italy. The striker has played just 22 times for I Bianconeri, scoring three goals in that time, albeit while registering three goal involvements in 14 games this season.

It must surely be disappointing for Villa fans to look back on his time at the club and wonder just what could have been if he had managed to live up to all that early hype.

Will Pucovski 'excited' to return to action after suffering latest concussion

He’s set to play for Melbourne Cricket Club on January 8 in a premier grade match

Will Pucovski has revealed he is set to return to action next month as the 23-year-old recovers from ongoing concussion symptoms. One of Australia’s brightest batting prospects, Pucovski has not played at all this summer after being concussed during a throwdown session while training with Victoria in early October. It was the tenth concussion of his brief career and he was expectedly left out of Australia’s 15-man Ashes and Australia A squads. But his return is imminent with Pucovski set to launch his latest comeback on January 8 for Melbourne Cricket Club against Kingston Hawthorn in a premier grade match.”I’m counting down the days…I’m that excited for it,” Pucovski said during Channel Seven’s BBL broadcast on Friday.A successful return in premier cricket could see him be included in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield side for the second half of the season, which leads into Australia’s Test tour of Pakistan in March.Pucovski has not played a single game since his Test debut against India at the SCG in January this year, where he showcased his enormous potential with 62 in Australia’s first innings. He suffered a dislocated shoulder while fielding and subsequently underwent surgery which ended his season prematurely. While his focus is on returning to the crease, Pucovski impressed during his commentary stint during the Melbourne Stars-Sydney Thunder match, where he spent time discussing how to play the short ball on bouncy pitches in Brisbane and Perth.Eerily, he watched Stars batter Hilton Cartwright get hit in the helmet by a short delivery from Ben Cutting which prompted a mandatory concussion check. Cartwright was able to keep batting while Pucovski provided compelling insight into the concussion check process.”One of the things about concussion that can be quite difficult is sometimes it can be delayed…you can be batting for another four or five overs then suddenly the grandstand is shaking or something is different,” he said.
