He walked away for £0: Arsenal icon is outperforming Havertz after leaving

This season has felt like something of a slog for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side have seemingly gone from one talking point to another over the last six months, be that dodgy decisions, injuries to key players or a lack of attacking signings in the winter transfer window.

The last two have left the team looking incredibly thin in the frontline, with Kai Havertz being the latest addition to the ever-growing injury list following a suspected muscle problem picked up in Dubai.

The German international has come in for plenty of criticism over the last few months, and while he’s a key player for the team, he’s currently being outperformed by someone Arteta let go for nothing.

Arsenal's slim attacking options

So, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and now Havertz all out of action, Arsenal’s frontline options look precariously thin.

Out wide, he only has two senior wingers to choose from in Leandro Trossard, who has 11 goal involvements in 36 games this season, and Raheem Sterling, with a disappointing haul of one goal and two assists in 18 appearances.

Fortunately, academy star Ethan Nwaneri has shown he’s more than capable of contributing to the first team this season, racking up a sensational tally of seven goals in just 700 minutes of action across 23 appearances.

Up top, there is even less of a choice for Arteta, as following reports of Havertz’s recent injury, Trossard is the only senior option left who has played as centre-forward, and even then, that is not a position he appears to be all that comfortable in.

The former Chelsea ace’s potential absence could be a serious problem, as while Understat’s data revealing he’s underperformed his expected goals in the league by 2.76 demonstrates he can be profligate at times, he’s still done an alright job leading the line.

For example, in 34 appearances, totalling 2776 minutes, the Aachen-born poacher has scored 15 goals and provided five assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.7 games, or every 138.8 minutes.

That said, while Havertz is doing a better job than he perhaps gets credit for, he’s still being outperformed by a striker let go by the club for nothing three years ago.

The former Arsenal star outperforming Havertz

Arteta has seen his fair share of strikers leave Arsenal since taking charge, like Alexandre Lacazette, who moved back to Lyon, and Eddie Nketiah, who moved to South London to join Crystal Palace.

However, the forward in question is former club captain Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, who left the club for free in the 2022 winter transfer window after scoring 92 goals and providing 20 assists in 163 appearances, which was enough for Saka to brand him a “legend”.

The next few years would see the Gabonese star play for Barcelona, Chelsea and Marseille, where he did unbelievably well, producing 41 goal involvements in just 51 appearances last season, which was also enough to earn a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah, where he has kept up his good form.

In fact, the former star of the Emirates has already scored 12 goals and provided two assists in just 20 appearances, totalling 1784 minutes this season.

That means he’s maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.42 games, or every 127.42 minutes, which is a better average than Havertz has managed for the Gunners this term.

Now, while the level of football in Saudi Arabia is obviously far lower than that of the Premier League, the 35-year-old sharpshooter was tearing things up in a top-five league only last season, so there is every chance he could still be doing a job in England.

Ultimately, Havertz has been doing reasonably well this season, but we can’t help imagining just how different things might have been had Arteta and Aubameyang been able to reconcile their differences in 2022.

Sri Lanka’s seam-bowling spearhead Dushmantha Chameera is out of the Men’s T20 World Cup, after suffering a grade two tear in the calf of his landing foot. Chameera pulled up while running in to bowl the last over of his spell against UAE on Tuesday, and immediately hobbled off the field wincing. The injury is likely connected to the ankle and calf complaints that had kept him out of the Asia Cup, with medical staff also suspecting that the cold weather in Geelong aggravated the issue. In fact, Chameera may be out of contention for much longer than just the T20 World Cup.”He’s out of the tournament definitely, but he might also use the break to do the ankle surgery that he’s been needing,” Arjuna de Silva, head of SLC’s medical advisory committee, told ESPNcricinfo. “The previous injuries were on the anterior part of the ankle, but this is in the calf. It’s a grade-two tear.”Related

Injured Madushanka out of T20 World Cup; Binura named replacement

Pramod Madushan, the other frontline seamer who played on Tuesday, will also miss Thursday’s vital match against Netherlands with a hamstring complaint. “But clinically, he’s not too bad. He could be okay in about a week,” de Silva said.Danushka Gunathilaka, who was out of Tuesday’s match with a hamstring problem of his own, has the mildest case of the three. He is set to undergo a fitness test ahead of Thursday’s game, and may be available for that match. Gunathilaka “will be fine”, in the words of captain Dasun Shanaka.Sri Lanka are likely to call up more replacements. The main reason for that is, having already lost left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka even before Chameera, they need to make sure their training nets remain of high quality without bowling their main fast bowlers into the ground. Shanaka even named the frontrunners for the role of these standbys.”Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando, Matheesha Pathirana,” Shanaka told the media. “So I don’t know the exact date when they will arrive. We are okay for the next game but as the tournament progresses we need to have a few more bowlers. At practices, we don’t want to waste away our main fast bowlers. It’s not finalised yet. Selectors are deciding, I think, definitely two or three fast bowlers will be here soon.”Chameera’s loss is a substantial one for Sri Lanka. He has been the team’s go-to death bowler in the past two years and has also frequently made breakthroughs with the new ball. For Thursday’s match, with Madushanka and Madushan also out, Sri Lanka are without their top three seam options. The only fast bowler among the reserves in Australia, Binura Fernando, has already been called up to the main squad after the injury to Madhushanka. Fernando and Lahiru Kumara will both very likely play against Netherlands.

Saved by Tarkowski: Moyes must finally axe Everton's 8-pass "Liverpool fan"

Goodison Park might have shattered the sound barrier when Everton’s James Tarkowski thundered a leaping shot into the back of Alisson’s neck.

It was Fergie Time in all its pomp, Everton digging into the deepest depths of their barrel to find something to prevent Liverpool from leaving Goodison Park for the final time with three points in the bag.

David Moyes. It’s remarkable what a new manager can do – more still a gaffer who knows the club, loves the club, has been here before.

The Merseyside derby might have descended into mayhem upon the final whistle, but the Toffees will be delighted with their renewed determination.

This much-changed Everton side are a far cry from Sean Dyche’s colourless relegation fodder. Goodison Park stole two points from their arch-rivals, but they must be frustrated by the fact that they failed to do more.

How Moyes outplayed Slot

Had Liverpool emerged from Goodison Park one final time to all but secure the Premier League title, there would be no means of consolation for a despondent Evertonian fanbase that knew their team deserved more.

You could say: luckily, Tarkowski’s winner spared such emotions, but there was nothing fortuitous about the home side’s drive and determination, so impressive against the ostensibly best team in England.

The frenetic nature of the affair prevented Liverpool from ever hitting their stride and mustering fluidity or control. Everton cared not; this played right into their hands. Their 0.95 xG (expected goals) total outstretched Liverpool’s of 0.63, as per Sofascore, bearing testament to their agency at the centre of the storm.

Moyes set his team up perfectly, ensuring that Everton’s muscular superiority came up trumps. The Times’ Martin Ziegler said that Moyes’ “effect on Everton has been little short of remarkable” after the game, but it could have been an even greater night, had one forward managed to find their shooting (or playmaking) boots.

The Everton star who let Moyes down

It’s matches like these that will show Farhad Moshiri – should he have been watching – the error of his ways on the transfer front.

When Iliman Ndiaye was forced off after only 25 minutes, it felt that Liverpool would go on to sink Goodison for the last time, but Moyes’ men displayed grit and tenacity and will be frustrated that they did not manage to claim all three points.

Ndiaye

Salah’s incredible form in front of goal precluded that, but Everton still “battered Liverpool” – as per TV host Terry Christian – and will disappointed that a fine winning run has been halted.

Ndiaye’s exit meant that Jesper Lindstrom’s significance was raised, and though the loan man brought pace and purpose down the right flank, he failed to provide the sharp point that might have sunk Liverpool for the second season running.

The 24-year-old was brought in for the 2024/25 campaign last summer, with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the year, but you’d have to concede that he’s not had the most inspiring of stays thus far.

Lindstrom’s athletic running did cause Andy Robertson a whirlwind of problems, but with Ndiaye forced off Everton’s opposite flanker needed to step up and provide some bite to match the menace.

Lindstrom

At some stage, the Danish winger needs to produce some form of end product. Much has been made of the attacking woes at number nine this season but Lindstrom has now reached 24 appearances for Everton without even one goal or assist.

When looking at his match statistics below, you can see that Lindstrom huffed and puffed but ultimately spent another match without hitting gold in front of goal.

Ndiaye didn’t even play half an hour of football but he completed all four of his passes, won all three of his duels and was fouled twice, showcasing his electric personality on the pitch and his dogged approach to the contest.

When contrasting that with Lindstorm’s statistics, only completing eight passes all game and consistently failing with his crosses and dribbles, you can see that he could have changed the result for the better with a bit more precision and guile.

Chalkboard

Ndiaye’s replacement, Jack Harrison, also showed much more impetus, completing 83% of his passes, creating one big chance, while also attempting six dribbles and winning eight duels.

Lindstrom, who revealed that he rejected Jurgen Klopp despite being “a Liverpool fan” in 2023, citing concerns about playing time, was handed a 6/10 match rating by The Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley, who noted his effort but also his struggle to produce something concrete in the final third.

Beto’s recent form has lessened the urgency for a new centre-forward somewhat, but with Lindstrom and Harrison both set to depart at the end of the season – as things stand – it’s clear that the club need to prioritise signing a more prolific upgrade at the end of the campaign.

One thing’s for certain: if Moyes wants to effectively build on the foundations laid over the past few weeks, he’ll need to cut Lindstrom loose at the end of the season and target a new and more potent right winger to kickstart an exciting new era.

Brandon Glover and the old South African gang outplay South Africa

Glover was one among a quartet of players with South African backgrounds who put in key showings to lift Netherlands to a famous win

Deivarayan Muthu06-Nov-20221:43

Glover: ‘We were just waiting for that complete performance’

There is a strong South African flavour in Netherlands’ squad. Stephan Myburgh had started his career at Northerns along with Neil Wagner; Colin Ackermann first made his name as a red-ball batter at Eastern Province; Roelof van der Merwe played for South Africa Under-19s as well as the senior team in T20 World Cups before acquiring a Dutch passport and forging a new career in Netherlands. Then there’s Brandon Glover, who was born in Johannesburg, went to St Stithians college, and also played for South Africa Under-19s. This quartet combined spectacularly to KO their country of birth at the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup, and help Netherlands finish No. 4 in the group (as results later in the day confirmed) to qualify directly for the 2024 edition.*Related

Myburg cracked seven fours in the powerplay and was responsible for 34 of the 48 runs Netherlands had scored in the first six overs. Ackermann provided the finishing kick, hitting an unbeaten 41 off 26 balls – 21 of which came in the last two overs of the innings. Van der Merwe, for his part, sprinted back from short fine leg and tracked down a skier, as if his life depended on it, to dismiss the dangerous David Miller for a run-a-ball 17. It is a bona fide contender for the catch of the tournament, but it was Glover who made the biggest impact on the day.Glover sussed out the conditions early – the Adelaide pitch was fairly two-paced and offering some grip – and bowled a slower legcutter third ball to hoodwink Rilee Rossouw in the tenth over. Then, when he returned to the attack for the 16th, he dug an on-pace short ball into the pitch and drew a top edge from Miller, with van der Merwe completing sensational catch. Two legal balls later, Glover hid one away from Wayne Parnell’s swinging arc and scratched his outside edge. South Africa were 113 for 6 in the 16th over in their pursuit of 159. Game over and tournament over for them.Glover had first caught the attention of Ryan Campbell, the then-head coach of Netherlands, in 2019. Netherlands were training in South Africa for the 2019 World Cup qualifiers and Campbell was so impressed with him that he convinced him to move to the Netherlands and use his Dutch passport, via his mother, to start a career there.”There is a strong South African influence in our team,” Glover said at the post-match press conference. “All with Dutch heritage obviously, but yeah we chose a different path for various reasons and it’s paying off for all of us. We are happy with it and it’s always special to play against South Africa; always nice to stand out there with them… We love South Africa and all that stuff but obviously we dedicate it to the Dutch and we’ve been working extremely hard for this team. It’s been good to see things have been paying off now.”The shift to Netherlands, in fact, immediately paid off for Glover, who emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket in 2019, with 28 strikes in 16 matches at an economy rate of 6.50. Glover, however, got just two games in the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE and there was no room for him in Netherlands’ XI in the early exchanges of this tournament. He finally got his chance against Pakistan on a typically bouncy Perth pitch and has since made telling contributions with the ball.Brandon Glover sent back David Miller and Wayne Parnell in the same over•Getty Images

“Obviously, I was disappointed not to play, especially in the qualifying stages,” Glover said. “But you have to back the captain and back the coach. They made the right decisions and we got there; it was all combinations and stuff. So, I was just tearing at the bit to play. I was just working hard in the nets and to finally get my chance against Pakistan, I thought: ‘Well, I’m not letting this go now and going to keep hammering away’. Fortunately, I took my opportunity and it was special for me because it shows hard work pays off. Obviously, I was raring to go the whole time. Very happy with how I’ve gone, and yeah, just nice to be back in the side.”Having felled Zimbabwe and South Africa in the Super 12s, and having challenged other oppositions throughout the tournament, Netherlands now believe that they can cut it against the top teams in international cricket.”We were just waiting for that complete performance,” Glover said. “There was always something that was missing [earlier] – the batting [or] bowling and we didn’t quite bring it together. I feel the last two performances we just came together better as a team, and we knew exactly what to do.”We’ve been working extremely hard on the background as well. I think the whole team just finally gelling and us playing our best form of cricket shows that we’re up there and we can compete with the best in the world, and we’ve done that. But incredibly happy for the team – we’ve come together really nicely. We just needed to get that complete performance, which I feel like we’ve done.”This T20 World Cup marks the end of Campbell’s stint at Netherlands, and Glover also suggested that Sunday’s match might have been Myburgh’s last for the team, but Glover’s own rise promises new beginnings for Netherlands.*

Not just Nunez: FSG must cash in on Liverpool ace who earns more than Diaz

Arne Slot has been somewhat stringent with his team selections this season, unleashing a tried-and-tested core to his Liverpool side that has, in fairness, reaped plenty of reward.

It’s meant that some of the squad – Joe Gomez, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa, for example – have been left fighting for regular minutes as Liverpool move toward the Premier League title, prepare for this month’s Carabao Cup final clash against Newcastle United and gear up for the Champions League knockout phase.

However, there’s another man who has struggled to earn regular starting minutes, and since he’s into his third season at Anfield carrying the badge of club-record signing, it’s inexcusable that Darwin Nunez is flattering to deceive.

The end of the road for Nunez

Nunez cost Liverpool an initial £64m fee to bring in from SL Benfica in July 2022, with club- and individual-related bonuses taking that figure to a whopping £85m.

Nunez is into his third season but has failed to convince Slot of his quality, limited to only seven starts in the Premier League, scoring six times across 36 matches in total.

As per Sofascore, he’s missed 51 big chances since first arriving in the Premier League, scoring 24 goals in that timeframe. That’s not good enough and were Mohamed Salah not so breathtakingly potent in the final third, Nunez’s struggles may have been felt more keenly.

Curiously though, Nunez’s finishing has statistically been at its best this year, with four goals scored and only four big chances missed in England’s top flight.

Even though he’s not missing so many chances this season, Nunez’s actual effectiveness, his chaotic element, has also diminished, and he offers little to a team fighting for multiple prizes.

Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr were interested in the Uruguay international in January but Liverpool ultimately kept him on the books, wary of selling themselves short with titles on the line.

However, as Fabrizio Romano states above, that could change this summer as Slot looks to put his own external stamp on the squad. Nunez might be off.

And he may not be the only one.

FSG must also sell this Liverpool star

Jurgen Klopp’s summer rebuild in 2023 set Liverpool up for the success they are currently enjoying.

Three transfer windows have passed with minimal first-team investment. Now it is time for the Reds to bolster Slot’s squad and ensure many seasons of challenging for the biggest honours can be enjoyed.

Wage Burners

With sporting director Richard Hughes likely to have compiled a list of left-backs following reports Liverpool are preparing to sign in that area, Kostas Tsimikas could be approaching the final stage of his Liverpool career.

Andy Robertson is the first choice at the club, has been at Liverpool for almost eight years. The Scotsman, 30, hasn’t been at his best this season but could still play an important role over the next few years – he just needs some younger competition to jockey with before finally handing over the baton.

Well, Liverpool are interested in high-flying Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez, among others, and this could see Tsimikas’ time come to an end, for the Reds don’t need three left-sided full-backs.

In 2020, Tsimikas joined Liverpool from Olympiakos in a deal worth £12m and he has since played 110 fixtures, racking up 18 assists along the way. As you can see below, though, he’s never managed to nail down a starting berth in the Premier League.

Even with Robertson flattering to deceive this season, Tsimikas hasn’t convinced his new boss. As per Sofascore, the 28-year-old’s enjoying one of his strongest defensive campaigns, winning 68% of his duels across 13 matches, although he only averages 0.2 dribbles and 1.4 ball recoveries per game.

Frankly, the defender has his limitations; in a way, he is a lesser version of prime Robertson, something that has worked well in maintaining fluency across the years, but now it’s time for change.

Tsimikas is a popular member of the Liverpool squad, committed and effective going forward, providing a delightful cross that made him the architect for some big moments – namely whipping in the last-gasp corner that Virgil van Dijk converted to lift last season’s Carabao Cup trophy against the odds.

However, every dog has his day and if Liverpool are to invest in a new left-back this summer, then it may be Tsimikas who is deemed expendable.

After all, the Greece international takes home a healthy pay packet indeed at £75k-per-week, meaning he earns more than Red superstars such as Ibrahima Konate (£70k-per-week) and Luis Diaz (£55k-per-week) both of whom are in need of fresh deals.

Both Konate and Diaz are renowned as being in the top bracket worldwide for their respective positions, which makes an interesting point on FSG’s need to tie such players down.

Liverpool must consider their options, for sure, but with a new left-back among the priority positions for Slot and co, Tsimikas may well be readying himself to drape the curtain on an Anfield journey he can look back on with pride, but one whose time has come.
