Amorim's very own Ibrahimovic: Man Utd to make bid for "phenomenal" talent

Zlatan Ibrahimović is a player who had a huge impact in a short space of time at Manchester United, capturing the hearts of the fanbase as a result.

The Swede joined the club on a free transfer from PSG back in the summer of 2016, subsequently handing the Red Devils the needed talisman they craved.

He managed to register 28 goals in his 46 appearances during his debut campaign, including four in the EFL Cup as he helped the club claim the trophy with a win over Southampton at Wembley.

However, a serious knee injury massively halted his progress at Old Trafford, only managing a total of seven outings throughout his second year at the club – before leaving on a free in June 2018.

Seven years on from his departure, boss Ruben Amorim has the opportunity to land his own version of the striker this summer in an attempt to rise up the Premier League table throughout 2025/26.

The latest on United’s hunt for a new striker this summer

Alexander Isak has been a player at the heart of one of the biggest transfer sagas this summer, with United themselves making an enquiry to land the Newcastle United star.

However, such an approach was rapidly dismissed, with the player himself holding out for a move to Liverpool after their opening offer of £120m was rejected last week.

Despite the failure to land the Swede, Amorim could be about to make a move to land RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, according to The Standard’s latest update.

They claim that the Red Devils are preparing an offer for the Slovenian international, after Newcastle had their £69m offer rejected over the weekend.

The Standard also states that the player himself could still be keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer, despite their lack of European football ahead of next season.

Why United’s latest target could be Amorim’s own Ibrahimovic

There are very few players in the modern game who can compare to Zlatan, with the legendary forward possessing a unique playstyle – not to mention his confidence off the field.

AC Milan's Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The 43-year-old was a player who was an aerially dominant option, but also capable of scoring the spectacular, as seen by the stupendous goal catalogue he’s produced during his career.

Moments of magic are what made him the player he was at Old Trafford, with his effort against Sunderland showcasing his ability to create an opportunity out of nothing.

His height, at 6”5, was a huge problem for multiple backlines in England’s top-flight, perfectly fitting the mould of what’s needed for a striker leading the line for the Red Devils.

Very few players have been able to replicate such levels since his departure, but that could all be about to change at Old Trafford in the coming weeks, with a move for the RB Leipzig talisman.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates their second goal scored by Lukas Klostermann

Sesko, who sits at a staggering 6”5, possesses a very similar frame to Zlatan, also being aerially dominant, like the Swede, as seen by his tally of 2.6 aerials won per 90 last season.

The Slovenian, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by analyst Antonio Mango, also scored 21 goals in 2024/25, often producing a sensational strike, as seen by his long-range effort against Bayern Munich.

His excellence in attacking areas is further showcased in his tally of 1.5 dribbles completed per 90, having the all-round talent to impress in the air or on the ground when needed.

Ultimately, his record of goals last season is the biggest sign of a good player, with Amorim’s side desperately needing a new forward who can produce the goods if they are to improve on their dismal 2024/25.

Sesko has all the tools needed to thrive in the current first-team squad, able to develop further under the manager’s guidance, given his tender age of just 22 years.

If he can build on his recent displays in Germany at Old Trafford, he would be a phenomenal buy, despite the fee, potentially being Amorim’s own version of former fan favourite Ibrahimović.

Their new Stones: TFG begin talks to sign "special" £26m star for Everton

A new stadium isn’t the only freshened-up feature that Everton fans are looking forward to this season: David Moyes has also been busy sprucing his squad with new quality, shipping out the old.

Everton start their Premier League campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Leeds United on Monday evening, with the curtain-raising fixture sure to give the club a demonstration of the new and a reminder of the old. Dominic Calvert-Lewin may feature up front for the Whites, after all.

Everton manager DavidMoyesbefore the match

However, in his old Toffees place, Thierno Barry will be looking to put down a marker and steer his side toward victory at Elland Road, having joined from Villarreal in the summer for an initial £27m fee.

The likes of Jack Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Alcaraz, no longer a loanee, have shored up the midfield following the exodus at the end of the 2024/25 season. Elsewhere, 19-year-old Adam Aznou adds depth and versatility to the defence.

But with Jarrad Branthwaite currently sidelined, Everton’s lack of depth at the back is accentuated.

Everton need a right-back

With Ashley Young now plying his trade for Ipswich Town in the Championship and Seamus Coleman playing only 11 minutes during Everton’s pre-season fixture against Roma, Everton desperately need a bit more quality and quantity at the rear.

Everton manager David Moyes

Not least because Vitalii Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson are both considered doubts ahead of Monday evening’s clash at Leeds.

But with Branthwaite anticipated to be sidelined for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury, it’s possible that Jake O’Brien reverts to his natural central berth alongside James Tarkowski, having featured prominently as a makeshift right-back under Moyes’ wing last year, to a great effect.

It’s clear, then, that Everton could do with a versatile defender to complete the set, one who could operate across different areas seamlessly, adding defensive strength and technical skill.

What Everton need is their next John Stones, and they might just have found him in an up-and-coming Premier League talent.

Everton in talks to sign Premier League star

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Everton have joined a host of their Premier League rivals in chasing a deal for Manchester City’s Rico Lewis this month.

It’s understood that Lewis, 20, is open to leaving the Etihad Stadium as he searches for regular first-team minutes, and that Everton, along with the likes of Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, have been in contact with intermediaries relevant to the situation.

Valued in the ballpark of £26m, Forest have already seen an initial offer rejected, so Everton and the Friedkin Group will need to work swiftly if they hope to seal his signature.

Why Everton want Rico Lewis

Lewis was handed a starting berth at Molineux on Saturday evening, keeping a clean sheet and claiming an assist from right-back as Man City defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 in the Premier League.

Already, the versatile talent has played 95 matches for Man City, scoring five goals and registering ten assists. In spite of his limited match action, Pep Guardiola has described him as “one of the best I’ve ever trained” and as a “special” talent; high praise indeed.

But the Spanish tactician also prefers to work with a small squad, and so Lewis is available for transfer. Everton could now take advantage, landing their next version of Stones by doing so.

Stones fell just shy of a century of appearances for the Toffees before earning his big-money move to Manchester, playing 95 times all told.

One of the most talented defenders of his generation, Stones started his top-flight career with the Blues, who didn’t enjoy him at his peak but got a taste of his elite quality.

Three Lions teammate Ezri Konsa has since hailed the 31-year-old as being a “world-class” player, and it’s hard to disagree. Stones’ genius footballing IQ and his incredible dynamism across many positions make him the prototypical ‘Pep Guardiola player’, with injuries the biggest drawback of an illustrious career.

Though he’s young and bears limited experience, Lewis could emulate his countryman, only travelling the opposite lane down the M62.

Praised post-match for his all-encompassing performance by The Manchester Evening News, who awarded him an 8/10 game rating, Lewis demonstrated the kind of technical control, creativity and combativeness to thrive as one of the standout players in the Premier League over the coming years, and it’s an opportunity Moyes cannot afford to pass up.

Further statistical analysis opens up a wider understanding of what makes this rising prospect so special. As per data-driven site FBref, Lewis ranks among the top 1% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for passes attempted, the top 8% for progressive passes and the top 4% for through balls per 90.

With his remarkable ball-playing capacity underscored, Lewis is patently a talent who could rival Stones in the years to come, especially as he has made 25 senior Citizen appearances in midfield too, underscoring his versatility and how his slick passing game and steely nature lend themselves to an all-important anchoring role.

Manchester City'sRicoLewisin action with Paris St Germain's Achraf Hakimi

It’s something that Stones has performed with aplomb through the latter stages of his remarkable career. Everton lost their young prodigy before he could bloom into the player he became, but in Lewis, they could strike back, landing Moyes a superstar in the making.

Jos Buttler: No guarantees for Root and Stokes in England's Champions Trophy plans

England white-ball captain excited by future after 3-1 T20I series win in Caribbean

Jos Buttler has said that Ben Stokes and Joe Root are not guaranteed to return to England’s white-ball set-up for the Champions Trophy, but hopes the pair retain ambitions in white-ball cricket.Neither Stokes nor Root have represented England in ODI cricket since their disastrous World Cup defence in 2023, with the Champions Trophy set to begin in exactly three months’ time.Stokes has previously said that the answer would “definitely be yes” if Brendon McCullum, who takes over the white-ball side in January, asked him to return, but added that: “I’m not going to be too disappointed if I don’t.”In August, England selector Luke Wright said that there was “no reason” why Root couldn’t come straight into a major tournament, although Root himself hasn’t spoken publicly about his own desire to return to the format.”I don’t know exactly,” Buttler said of whether Root and Stokes will be back in February. “Obviously Brendon McCullum is coming in full-time and he’ll be in touch with the guys.”England have a white-ball tour to India in January that includes three ODIs, which are the only 50-over matches they have before the Champions Trophy begins.Asked whether the pair are guaranteed to come back in if they are available, Buttler added: “It’s conversations for the next few weeks with the guys in charge. The guys here have played really well. Some of the young players have done themselves no harm at all. There are people who aren’t here who will have aspirations to be in the white-ball side as well. It’s really exciting.”Root is arguably England’s greatest ODI batter, with more than 6500 runs and 16 hundreds in 171 matches since 2013. However, he has struggled over the past three years in the few 50-over matches he has played. Since July 2021, he averages 22.94 in the format across 20 matches. His last ODI century came during the 2019 World Cup.Related

Similarly, Stokes has played just 19 ODIs in the last five years. However, in that time, he has averaged 43.38. Across the 2023 World Cup, he scored 539 runs at an average of 59.88.”I can’t speak for them individually but I hope they have white-ball aspirations,” Buttler said of the pair. “They’re two great players.”Naturally the teams will become closer in terms of personnel now the overall messaging will be coming from one man who is in charge of England cricket now. The guys who play all three formats, they won’t feel it’s red or white as much anymore.”Maybe you’ll see the same faces and the same guy in charge, no matter what colour the ball is. It’s certainly going to give more consistency.”Buttler was speaking in the moments after a washout in St Lucia had secured England a 3-1 series win over West Indies, the T20I side’s first away series win in over two years.”To come and beat the West Indies here is a great effort. We’ve had some close series against them over the last few years which has been good. I’m really pleased for everyone in the dressing room who put in the performances we did to get the results we got.”In particular, Buttler singled out the performance of Saqib Mahmood, whose nine wickets across four matches led to him being named as Player of the Series, after two years in which the fast bowler had been plagued by injuries.”It’s a great piece of work,” Buttler said. “Having just gone through an injury recently – nothing as serious as Saqi – you realise how much hard work it is. It’s an eye-opener for how much resilience and hard work and all the rehab that the guys who have had these back injuries and long-term injuries must go through.”More than anything he showed great skill with the ball and he got the results he deserved.”Buttler himself returned this series after four months off with a calf injury, but was able to come through the series unscathed. On this trip, he opted not to keep wicket to gain experience of captaining from the field.”I don’t know exactly but I’ve enjoyed it,” Buttler said, when asked if he will give up the gloves for good. “It’s been good for me to take one less thing off my plate. Tres has been great at doing that as well, he’s really led the side and really helped me and pushed me towards those kinds of things. Change is good sometimes. I’ve enjoyed being closer to the bowlers.”

> Veja tabela e classificação do Brasileirão-2023 clicando aqui

Even better than Breum: Celtic set to make offer for "flamboyant" £5m star

Celtic are reportedly closing in on making their first addition to their ranks on the flanks with the signing of Belgian star Michel-Ange Balikwisha this week.

Sky Sports reports that a fee of £5m has been agreed between the two clubs and that a medical will take place later this week before the move is rubber-stamped and made official.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha in action for Royal Antwerp.

Brendan Rodgers made it clear earlier this month that he wants the board to bolster his attack with more signings before the window slams shut at the start of next month.

The Hoops boss said: “The squad will hopefully look again different come the end of the window. I think it’s very clear. We need to improve in the front end of the pitch. The attacking department has always, and always will be, the strengths of my teams. We’ve lost important players in that area, and we need to replace players in that area.”

Nicolas Kuhn left to join Como earlier this summer and Jota is due to be out until the turn of the year with an ACL injury, though, which means that Celtic may need more signings than just Balikwisha.

One other option they have been linked with in the attacking midfield positions is Go Ahead Eagles forward Jakob Breum, who could bolster their options out wide.

What Jakob Breum could bring to Celtic

The Denmark U21 international would be an interesting signing for the Hoops, if they are still keen on him, because he is not a typical out-and-out wide player.

Per Transfermarkt, 23 of his 29 starts in the 2024/25 campaign came as an attacking midfielder, with the other six on the left wing. This suggests that his best role in a Rodgers system may be as one of the central midfielders ahead of Callum McGregor, rather than as an out-and-out winger.

Benjamin Nygren

Benjamin Nygren, for example, played wide and centrally during his time in Denmark, but has mainly operated as a central midfielder, tasked with scoring and creating goals in central areas, since his move to Parkhead.

Therefore, Breum could arrive at Parkhead as a player who is more likely to impact games as one of the three in midfield than as an out-and-out winger as a replacement for Daizen Maeda, James Forrest, or Hyun-jun Yang.

As you can see in the table above, the Danish attacker performed well as a number ten for Go Ahead Eagles as an efficient finisher who also offered decent creativity at times.

However, Celtic seem to need more of an out-and-out right winger, with Balikwisha coming in on the left, than a number ten option to play over Reo Hatate or Nygren.

It should not be a surprise, therefore, to learn that the Scottish Premiership giants are reportedly looking to bring a natural right winger to the club.

Celtic set to bid for Dutch star

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Celtic are preparing to submit an offer to sign Feyenoord forward Calvin Stengs before the end of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on Football Insider’s podcast, the reporter said: “Stengs is a player that has emerged on Celtic’s radar – he had a difficult season for Feyenoord, a few injury problems, so that may be a concern for Celtic. He’s into the final two years of his contract with Feyenoord, so could be available for a cut-price fee this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

“Celtic are looking at that, seeing there could be real potential to land a former Dutch international for a relatively small fee with a bid imminent.”

O’Rourke has not revealed how much it would take to snap the Feyenoord star up, but it was reported earlier this month that a fee of around £5m could be enough to get a deal done.

It now remains to be seen whether or not this “imminent” bid from the Hoops will be enough to convince the Dutch side to part ways with the left-footed star before the deadline.

Why Celtic should sign Calvin Stengs

The Premiership champions should do everything in their power to ensure that their bid is enough to secure a deal for Stengs because he could be a much-needed addition to the team.

As aforementioned, Celtic do not need a player of Breum’s profile as much as they need a right winger, due to the current make-up of the squad, which is why the Feyenoord ace could be an even better signing for the Hoops this summer.

The 26-year-old dynamo, who scored against Celtic in the Champions League in 2023, could come in as the best option on the right flank ahead of Forrest and Yang, whilst Breum would just be one of a number of decent options in the attacking midfield roles.

Stengs missed 35 games through injury in the 2024/25 campaign, per Transfermarkt, which meant that he was unable to showcase the best of his abilities at the top end of the park last season.

However, the right-sided attacker’s form in the Eredivisie during the 2023/24 campaign, when he was fit for the majority of the season, suggests that he has the quality to be a terrific signing for Celtic.

As you can see in the table above, Stengs was directly involved in 18 goals, more than Breum’s 15 in the Eredivisie last term, in 29 games for Feyenoord.

The Netherlands international, who was described as a “flamboyant” winger by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is a winger who can provide a huge threat as a creator whilst also finishing chances at an efficient rate.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

Yang and Forrest have scored six goals between them in the Premiership since the start of last season, which speaks to their lack of output in the final third, and that is why it is important for the Hoops to bring in a right-sided attacker before the window closes.

Stengs appears to be a player who suits what Celtic need, positionally and quality-wise, and could be a much better signing than Breum, due to his superior numbers in the Eredivisie and his better fit within the current squad.

'Bizarre' toe injury no hurdle as Johnson returns to BBL in style

After being out with an injury that has left doctors and surgeons “mindblown”, Johnson picked up four wickets against Perth Scorchers

Spencer Johnson’s toe injury – which he has called “bizarre” – has left several sports physicians and surgeons baffled. He snapped a tendon in the middle toe of his right foot during South Australia’s Sheffield Shield game against Western Australia last month. Johnson, 29, bowled 45 overs in the match, just the sixth first-class appearance of his career, on the back of playing four white-ball games against Pakistan in the span of eight days.It had kept him on the sidelines for a month and he missed defending BBL champions Brisbane Heat’s opening two games of the season. He, however, showed no visible signs of discomfort in an outstanding return on Boxing Day, where he claimed career-best BBL figures of 4 for 20 in Heat’s 33-run loss to Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium.”To be honest, we still don’t really know how it’s happened or why it’s happened,” Johnson told reporters after the match. “I think four surgeons have looked at it, four sports doctors have looked at it, and they are all mindblown.”I think we just manage it and look after it and hopefully it will be all good.”The pain is not constant but strapping is required, which is unusual for a toe and involves a rather complicated process. “It’s pretty hectic,” Johnson said of the strapping. “It really only hurts when I curl over or claw over. We’ve sort of stopped it from curling over [with the strapping] and that seems to work.”We’ve come up with a decent method to strap it and hopefully that will be all right for the rest of the season. It’s such a bizarre injury, I could wake up tomorrow and it could be all right. We’re looking after it, we’ll manage it.”Given the situation, Johnson’s comeback against Scorchers was made even more impressive. He relished bowling on Optus Stadium’s hard and fast surface, unleashing a hostile spell with the new ball where he dismissed opener Finn Allen for a duck.In what has become a trademark, Johnson consistently hurried the batters on a back of a length. He claimed the wickets of Cooper Connolly, Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar with short deliveries in the backend of Scorchers’ innings. Johnson, importantly in white-ball cricket, is also adept at being a defensive bowler with his accurate full-pitched deliveries hard to score off.The 5 for 26 against Pakistan in Sydney last month was Spencer Johnson’s best day out in Australia’s colours•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

“It was nice being back in the Brisbane Heat shirt,” Johnson said. “It [toe] felt good out there.”Having starred in the BBL over the past couple of years, including a match-winning 4 for 26 in last season’s final against Sydney Sixers, Johnson is on the fringes of Australia’s white-ball teams – he has played ten white-ball internationals since debuting in South Africa in August 2023. Johnson produced his best international performance when he claimed 5 for 26 against Pakistan in the second T20I at the SCG – the best figures by an Australian quick in the format.”Five wickets for Australia… sounds a bit weird,” grinned Johnson. “Doing it at the level above helps [build confidence].”After a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign this year, an ageing Australia might go through a transition ahead of the format’s next showpiece event in early 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. If his troublesome toe doesn’t flare up, and he can stay fit, Johnson should be an appealing option.”I think for me, just staying on the park and keeping my body healthy is the main thing,” he said. “Hopefully the performances will keep coming.”
