Arsenal's first Dowman: Meet the best player to ever come through Hale End

Now that we have some distance from the disappointing loss to Liverpool, there is plenty to be optimistic about for Arsenal this season.

For example, Mikel Arteta was backed in a big way in the summer, with players like Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke.

Moreover, in addition to these new players, Hale End looks to have produced another superstar in the making for the club in the unreal Max Dowman.

The teenager already looks more than comfortable in the senior game and like he has a bright future ahead of him, although there was another academy superstar who was once predicted to do big things and is now worth less than £1m.

Max Dowman's rapid rise

It would be fair to say that, aside from the Champions League run, last season was one of the least enjoyable campaigns Arsenal fans have had for some time, as it felt like everything was going wrong.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

However, the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly was a real bright spot, and yet, even as they broke into the first team, there was talk of an even more exciting prospect in the academy – a 14-year-old who was playing well beyond his years.

This was, of course, Dowman, and when you take a look at his statistics from last season, it becomes easier to understand why those in the know, like Jacek Kulig, were going as far as proclaiming him to be the “most exciting prospect” he had seen “since Lamine Yamal.”

For example, in just 23 appearances, totalling 1945 minutes, he put the ball in the back of the net 19 goals and provided five assists for good measure, which comes out to an average of 1.04 goal involvements per match, or one every 81.04 minutes.

Numbers like these forced Arteta and Co to bring the youngster on the pre-season tour this year, and for the first time, fans were able to see why so many are so excited about him, as he came off the bench against Newcastle United and won a penalty in short time.

However, the most significant indication of just how highly the club rate the teenager is the fact he’s now a regular part of the first-team squad, and that not only did he make his Premier League debut against Leeds United, but that the manager felt comfortable subbing him on at Anfield when the team needed a goal.

In all, while it is still so early, the hype around Dowman is starting to feel justified, which unfortunately was never the case with a former Hale Ender who is now plying his trade in Europe.

Arsenal's original Dowman

Every year, there is a new set of exciting academy talents that fans get excited about, but sometimes, there is more than that; there is an expectation, and while Dowman looks like he might fulfil the expectations fans have of him, Charlie Patino was unable to live up to the expectations people had of him.

While it seems a long time ago now, the youngster was expected by many to be the next big thing to emerge from Hale End.

For example, back in October 2021, former Gunners’ wonderkid Jack Wilshere told the press that the youngster was “going to make a name for himself in the future” and that he was “one who everyone at the training ground is talking about.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Arsenal scout Brian Stappleton claimed that Sean O’Connor, the scout who discovered Wilshere, told him Patino was “the best player who has ever walked through the doors at Hale End.”

The hype was only further fueled when the “golden” youngster, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, came off the bench to make his competitive debut for the club in a League Cup match against Sunderland in 2021 and scored.

With regular first-team football the next step, Arsenal sent their exciting wonderkid on a number of loan spells, first to Blackpool and then Swansea City.

However, while he did okay during this time, a total tally of seven goals and eight assists in 72 games didn’t suggest he was quite ready to play under Arteta, and so when the player’s camp made it clear he wanted to leave, the Gunners were forced into accepting a low £1m off from Deportivo La Coruna due to the lack of interest from other sides.

Unfortunately, things have not worked out for the 21-year-old, as he’s made just 12 appearances over the last year, in which he’s failed to score or assist a single goal.

Unsurprisingly, this has seen his valuation tank, and according to Transfermarkt, the former next big thing is now worth €600k, which is just £518k.

Ultimately, while there is still plenty of time for Patino to forge a great career for himself, it’s probably safe to say the hype and pressure placed on his shoulders were not justified.

Not only Woltemade: Barca loss showed Newcastle star must start every game

Newcastle United’s summer was defined by high-profile transfer dealings and an effort to reshape Eddie Howe’s squad into one capable of competing both domestically and in Europe.

They endured frustrations in the striker market, failing to secure Hugo Ekitike, João Pedro, or Benjamin Šeško.

Persistent interest in Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa seemed unlikely to bear fruit until the dominoes finally fell on deadline day.

Alexander Isak’s record-breaking £125m move to Liverpool freed Newcastle to act decisively. Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade arrived for £69m, while Wissa followed soon after in a £55m deal.

The pair were joined by Aaron Ramsdale, Jacob Ramsey, and Malick Thiaw, signalling Howe’s intent to add both quality and depth across the pitch.

The season began with a stuttering rhythm.

A goalless draw with Aston Villa left supporters encouraged by the performance but frustrated at the lack of a cutting edge.

A dramatic 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool followed, sealed by a 100th-minute winner from Rio Ngumoha, while a second 0-0 draw away at Leeds raised questions about Howe’s experiments with a 3-4-3 formation.

Newcastle finally found their first win with a 1-0 home victory over Wolves, before a narrow 2-1 defeat to Barcelona marked their Champions League return.

Throughout those early fixtures, the battle for the right-wing berth has become one of the most intriguing tactical storylines.

Howe initially favoured one of his latest signings, but Jacob Murphy has consistently reminded him of his reliability and end product.

The two wide men now look set for fierce competition to link up with Woltemade at the tip of Newcastle’s new attack.

Elanga's early struggles for consistency

Signed from Nottingham Forest for £55m, Anthony Elanga arrived with a reputation as a dynamic winger who could stretch defences and create chances in the final third.

His output in the Premier League last season was impressive: 11 assists and consistent involvement across 82 appearances for Forest.

His statistical profile suggests he has the tools Newcastle need, ranking in the 94th percentile for assists per 90 (0.40) and crosses per 90 (6.66), as per FBref.

But those numbers have not yet translated seamlessly onto Tyneside.

In the opening fixture against Aston Villa, Elanga was handed the start over Murphy, only to deliver a subdued performance that drew heavy criticism.

Against Liverpool, Elanga fared better, showing glimpses of the pace and direct running that convinced Howe to invest heavily.

Still, without a recognised striker leading the line, his efforts went unrewarded.

His best display so far came against Barcelona, where he stretched the Catalan defence and showed a willingness to commit players one-on-one.

Yet even there, Newcastle looked rejuvenated after he was replaced, highlighting the inconsistency that has marked his early weeks at the club.

Elanga’s ceiling remains high, and Howe has been quick to defend him, insisting adaptation takes time.

However, with Newcastle increasingly reliant on players who can deliver in the final third, patience may wear thin if those flashes of quality do not soon become a regular feature.

Why Murphy & Woltemade now have to start every game

Waiting in the wings – quite literally – is Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan whose journey has made him one of the most popular members of Howe’s squad.

Signed from Norwich in 2017, he has amassed 222 appearances for the club, with 21 goals and 36 assists to his name.

Last season, Murphy recorded 12 assists, many of them simple cut-backs or crosses that Isak finished with ruthless efficiency.

Statistically, Murphy’s profile provides a compelling case. He is, after all, a real “unsung hero”, according to journalist Scott Wilson.

He ranks in the 99th percentile for assists per 90 (0.50) and in the 84th percentile for crosses per 90 (4.99).

While he may not attempt as many deliveries as Elanga, his accuracy and decision-making often make the difference.

His habit of putting it on a plate for strikers has been particularly valuable for Newcastle’s forwards, and early signs suggest Nick Woltemade could be the next beneficiary.

Evidence of that partnership came quickly.

In the 1-0 victory over Wolves, Murphy marked his return to the starting XI with a perfectly judged cross for Woltemade’s decisive goal.

Days later, in the Champions League clash with Barcelona, he repeated the trick, whipping in another precise delivery that allowed Anthony Gordon to score.

Two high-quality assists in as many games underscored his reliability and highlighted the potential of a lethal understanding with Newcastle’s new striker.

Murphy’s advantage is not just technical but also mental. At 30, he offers composure, discipline, and a deep knowledge of Howe’s system.

While Elanga represents investment in the future, Murphy provides immediate impact – something Newcastle need as they balance Premier League ambitions with the demands of European football.

The coming weeks are likely to determine who secures the starting spot on the right wing.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Elanga has youth, pace, and statistical promise, but Murphy’s proven record and tangible contributions make him difficult to ignore.

Howe may rotate between the two, but if early performances are anything to go by, Murphy has already built a strong case to reclaim his role as Newcastle’s first-choice wide man.

"Sensational" Arsenal star could now help Gyokeres reach Haaland numbers

The last week or so has been a good one for Arsenal.

First, Liverpool dropped points to Crystal Palace in the Premier League and then, thanks to a last-minute goal of their own, Mikel Arteta’s side capitalised by beating Newcastle United.

On top of that, the Gunners picked up another three points and a clean sheet in the Champions League, and while he didn’t score, it was another game in which Viktor Gyokeres looked more like the top-level striker so many hoped he’d be.

Finally, another important Arsenal player appears to have found some real form of late as well, someone who could potentially help the Swedish striker reach Erling Haaland-esque numbers by season’s end.

How Gyokeres compared to Haaland last season

The first thing to note is that this article isn’t suggesting Gyokeres will ever be on the same level as Haaland; that would be rather absurd.

However, there is no reason to think the Swede couldn’t find himself in a hot streak at some point this season and match his numbers-wise during that period.

After all, while he was playing in a far weaker league last season, the Stockholm-born star was a goalscoring monster for Sporting CP.

For example, in 52 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, totalling 4248 minutes, he was able to score a staggering 54 goals and provide 13 assists.

That comes out to a mind-blowing average of 1.28 goal involvements per game, or one every 63.40 minutes, and if that isn’t a world-class rate of return, nothing is.

For his efforts, the Manchester City striker’s racked up a tally of 34 goals and five assists in 48 appearances, totalling 4042 minutes.

That comes out to a still outrageously impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.23 games, or one every 103.64 minutes.

Now, the level of opposition is a clear caveat with these numbers, but given his improvement over the last few games, his physicality, and incredible shot power, there is no reason why Gyokeres couldn’t rival Haaland with the right service.

Fortunately, someone who could be the chief provider of said service looks to be back in form.

The Arsenal star who could help Gyokeres reach Haaland numbers

The brilliant news for Arteta this season is that with Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke in the team, there is no shortage of players who could supply Gyokeres with chances.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, the player who could be the most crucial in helping the Swede rival his fellow Scandinavian this season is Martin Odegaard.

Now, it’s undoubtedly true that the Gunners’ captain had a poor campaign last year, but it’s easy to forget that he was named the club’s Player of the Year for the two seasons prior.

Moreover, the Norwegian international was battling with an ankle injury that was clearly impacting his ability to play late into the season.

Regardless, the “world-class” midfielder, as dubbed by ex-Arsenal star Paul Merson, seems to be getting back to his mercurial best at the moment.

For example, his cameo off the bench against Newcastle United last week was incredibly impactful, with his persistent passes in behind leading to Declan Rice’s cross, which ultimately resulted in Mikel Merino’s equaliser.

Then, against Olympiacos, he was in from the start and put in what might’ve been his best performance for the club in quite some time.

The “sensational” international, as dubbed by content creator Connor Humm, was all over the pitch and supplied the attackers, specifically Gyokeres, with a constant stream of balls over the top and passes through the back line for them to latch onto.

In fact, during his 95 minutes of action, the 26-year-old produced an incredible expected assists figure of 0.93 and was finally rewarded when Bukayo Saka drilled a wonderful ball between the goalkeepers’ legs late on.

Ultimately, Gyokeres might not be quite as good a striker as Haaland, but with the players in this Arsenal team and Odegaard playing as well as he is at the moment, he might just be able to match his output for a period.

PSL 2025 likely to resume later this week in Pakistan

Overseas player availability a key concern after league had to be suspended due to cross-border tensions between Pakistan and India

Danyal Rasool12-May-2025

There are eight games remaining in PSL 2025•Associated Press

The PSL is likely to resume later this week with the PCB aiming to hold the remaining games in Pakistan. The league, which was postponed due to increasing cross-border tensions with India, has eight games left and the PCB, as well as several franchises, is eager to conclude the season as early as possible. The PSL held meetings with the franchises on Monday to discuss specific dates and venues. The most pressing issue is the availability of overseas players, with ESPNcricinfo understanding a significant number are unlikely to return. The asymmetry of player availability may also impact squads, with some franchises more confident about overseas players rejoining than others. To mitigate that, the PCB is also believed to be considering a replacement draft to make up the numbers. While the quality of players available for such a draft is a concern – the most in-demand players were already with the PSL or the IPL – it is likely to be a necessary step to fill the gaps. The logistics around production will also need to be sorted, with the contracts for broadcasting teams ending on 18 May, the date for the final before the league had to be suspended.Several stakeholders at the franchises ESPNcricinfo spoke to said that bringing foreign players back for the remainder of the season had been made difficult by the decisions compelled upon the PCB from the sheer volatility of the period leading to the league’s suspension. As tensions between India and Pakistan escalated, the PSL at one point went through three different options within 24 hours. The PCB initially considered moving the tournament to Karachi after the security situation around the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium became untenable, before announcing early on Friday morning that it would be held in the UAE. Later that day, though, with the IPL also suspended by this point, it was announced the PSL was being suspended indefinitely – a decision ultimately made on the advice of the Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.During this time, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi held a meeting with the overseas players. One franchise member told ESPNcricinfo the players were “in no frame of mind” to play at this point, with emotions running high. It was decided that evening to airlift the players to the UAE that night from an airbase. The conclusion of PSL 2025 will mark the end of the ten-year leases for the six franchises, with the contracts up for renewal and renegotiation. The current owners have right of first refusal, with several indicating a preference to purchase teams in perpetuity rather than operate on rolling long-term contracts. The PSL spilling into the last ten days of May is also expected to impact Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan. Bangladesh were due to arrive on May 21 and play five T20Is starting on May 25, with the first two in Faisalabad and the remaining three in Lahore. The BCB said it was in “active and ongoing discussions” about the tour.
