Tottenham have been one of the best teams in England over the past six years or so.

The London club may not have won a trophy during that time, but numerous top-four finishes and a Champions League final appearance has certainly been sufficient for a club that were lumbering around mid-table in the early 2000s.

Spurs’ recent success can be attributed to the rise of one player, and there are no prizes for guessing that we’re talking about Harry Kane.

The Englishman has won two Premier League golden boots, and he’s already the club’s third-highest goalscorer, but as with any footballer, he’s not able to play every single game.

Football fans across the world have been gripped to the new Spurs documentary on Amazon Prime, and one trend that has been prominent is how badly injuries affected the side last season, particularly when Kane went down with a thigh problem.

Indeed, Spurs won just three of the nine league games in which Kane didn’t play last term, and that’s down to the fact they haven’t had a competent backup, being forced into using Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura as makeshift options, two players who aren’t natural centre-forwards.

Understandably, finding another striker has been a priority for Spurs this summer, but they’ve lost out on two of their reported targets already, with Ollie Watkins joining Aston Villa and Callum Wilson heading to Newcastle.

Playing under Jose Mourinho is undoubtedly more alluring that turning out for either Steve Bruce or Dean Smith, so why do Spurs keep missing out on these players?

The unfortunate truth is that footballers want to play the game they love, and at Tottenham, you have to be a very special player to displace Kane, and even then, that might not be enough.

Of course, there are some players who are willing to play second fiddle, but often you’ll find that these players aren’t up to scratch, with the likes of Vincent Jansson and Fernando Llorente filling that role in recent years, and neither of those had anything close to resembling a good scoring record for Spurs.

Kane is integral to Tottenham’s success, and when he’s fit he’ll start every single match, so you can’t promise consistent minutes to any striker you’re looking to bring in, while also needing a player who can fill his shoes when he is injured or suspended.

Spurs still want a striker this summer even with their flurry of activity that has included the impending arrival of Gareth Bale, but even though they’ve brought in one of the biggest names in football, this striker won’t be easy to find.

The fact of the matter is, a talented forward who is willing to sit on the bench for the majority of the time is very hard to find, and unfortunately, Spurs are tasked with seeking out this elusive profile of footballer.

One Baggies player linked with an exit from the Hawthorns is Charlie Austin, who has been tipped as a potential target for Championship outfit Derby County.

According to DerbyshireLive chief football writer Steve Nicholson, it “would not come as a surprise” if the Rams had asked about the 31-year-old striker this window.

It appears that Austin has been transfer-listed in the Midlands with the Express & Star’s Joseph Masi also bringing up Derby’s name earlier this week.

Panic gamble

The veteran forward hasn’t been named in any of Albion’s last two matchday squads in the Premier League and only played five minutes during their Carabao Cup defeat to Brentford.

Slaven Bilic signed the former Saints man on deadline day last summer for £4m with him thought to be raking in a whopping £50k-per-week as their highest earner last season.

It means the Baggies have spent around £7m in total on him as of this week – all for him to barely feature due to fitness troubles and a year on, is heading towards the exit door.

Austin bagged ten goals last season but could only start 18 matches in the Championship, where he averaged only 0.8 aerials won and 1.6 shots per game, via WhoScored.

It’s no wonder that Bilic is looking elsewhere for a striker this month.

Bringing him in so late last season certainly now seems to be a move of pure panic and desperation in hindsight, at least if Albion secure Karlan Grant, then it’s a player that they have been tracking for quite some time.

Luke Dowling can’t afford to make another catastrophic mistake in the striker position.

وأعلنت مجلة “فرانس فوتبول” القائمة النهائية للمرشحين للكرة الذهبية والمكونة من 30 لاعبًا، ومن بينهم ليونيل ميسي والمصري محمد صلاح جناح ليفربول.

ويدعي باتريس إيفرا أنه سئم من منح الكرة الذهبية إلى ليونيل ميسي حيث أشاد بنجولو كانتي وجورجينيو ويرى أنهما يستحقان الجائزة.

لعب ثنائي تشيلسي دورًا أساسيًا في تتويج الفريق بدوري أبطال أوروبا بعد وصول المدرب توماس توخيل.

استمر جورجينيو في مساعدة إيطاليا على الفوز ببطولة أوروبا، على حساب إنجلترا بركلات الترجيح في ويمبلي.

ميسي الذي انضم إلى باريس سان جيرمان، يمتلك بالفعل ست كرات ذهبية قياسية – والفوز هذا العام سيجعله بعيدًا عن البقية.

Everton must consider terminating the contract of yet another one of their fringe players by allowing Matthew Pennington to walk away as a free agent.

What’s the word?

Pennington has entered into the final year of his Everton contract but stands little chance of ending his time at Goodison Park with any further appearances in Royal Blue, four years on from his Premier League debut under Roberto Martinez.

The Spaniard gifted Pennington six of his nine first-team appearances, lauding him after a game against Leicester, before being replaced by Ronald Koeman, who handed out the final three, with each manager since opting to send the defender out on loan.

Pennington’s lack of a breakthrough left the 26-year-old hoping to sever his long-standing ties with Everton earlier in the summer whilst still on loan with Hull City, having informed the local media that he would use the off-season transfer window to find a new home.

“I’m thinking I need a home in the summer, somewhere to put my roots down and crack on with my career,” he said, via quotes by the Yorkshire Post. “I’ve been on loan quite a lot now so I’m looking for that place to settle down and really push on with my career.”

Everton chiefs had likewise been hopeful of finding Pennington a new club before Monday’s Deadline Day, and could yet still offload the Warrington-born centre-half to a Championship side before October 16 with the window still open between Premier League and EFL clubs.

But with interest so far appearing slim, Blues chiefs would be well advised seeking a mutual termination of the defender’s remaining contract after allowing Sandro Ramirez to join SD Huesca without a fee on Deadline Day to end his miserable stay on Merseyside.

Sandro scenario again

Everton have kept Pennington on tenterhooks for years with loan spells to Tranmere Rovers and Coventry as a youth, before deals to join Walsall, Leeds United, Ipswich Town and most recently Hull last term, where he made just 14 Championship outings after a lengthy spell on the bench.

His stock may never have been lower, and as such has yet to find the new home he desired so much if Everton have been adamant on receiving any form of fee for a defender that’s been on their books for 15 years.

But Everton chiefs must realise that interest in Pennington may only come once his Toffees days are over and accept that like Sandro, drastic measures are needed and that he must have his contract mutually terminated in the next week rather than waste another year of his career.

By doing so, the Blues will allow Pennington to secure a deal before EFL managers finalise their plans and there is no place left for the 26-year-old to ply his trade other than in Everton’s Under 23s – as he has so far this season, and that is no place for a 26-year-old to be on a regular basis.

Former Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster singled out midfielder James Milner for praise as he prepares for his Anfield return tonight as a Sheffield United player.

Brewster influenced by Milner

The 20-year-old left Anfield to join Sheffield United for £23.5m before the domestic transfer window closed and is set to revisit his old stomping ground against Jurgen Klopp’s side in Blades colours, as opposed to all red.

Brewster featured for the Reds during the Community Shield clash against Arsenal at Wembley, when he missed a penalty during the shootout.

Despite this, the England under-21 international never made a Premier League appearance before his switch to Yorkshire, although Liverpool gave themselves the option of a buyback clause which lasts for three years.

Speaking with the Daily Mail, Brewster spoke about his thoughts on his return to Liverpool and who influenced him at Melwood.

“It’s going to be a bit weird,” he said. “But it will be a nice moment, just to see everybody. I didn’t get to say goodbye because [the transfer] happened so quick. Not one person slacks off and I’ll always remember that.

“[Take] James Milner. He’s in his 30s and still going strong. That’s for a reason; because he is always in the gym, eating right, doing everything he can to be the best. That’s one thing that I’ll 100 per cent take from Liverpool and James Milner.

“I would 100 per cent take that [longevity] and look what he is doing in his 30s and [think] why can’t I do that? The standards, they set the bar very high and that’s something I will never forget and hopefully people looking at me, when I’m older they will hopefully feel the same way.”

Class act

Footage had previously been leaked of Milner’s leadership skills but it appears that these characteristics continue away from the cameras, which is probably not a surprise to anyone.

Former England international Stuart Pearce described the veteran as an “outstanding professional”, whom he managed during his time with England under-21s in the mid-2000s, praising his willingness and attitude to clock substantial running distances and his versatility to put in a strong performance wherever he plays.

Milner’s influence on young players like Brewster is clear to see, judging by the Sheffield United youngster’s comments.
