Spurs fans flock to Bergwijn development

According to a report by Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf, via Hotspur Related, Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn is attracting serious interest from Ajax and it is believed the Eredivisie champions will make a move for him this summer.

Bergwijn started just 13 Premier League matches under both Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason over 2020/21, scoring one goal and setting up three others in that time (WhoScored).

Tottenham signed him from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, with the 23-year-old going on to make an immediate impact. He scored a sumptuous volley against Manchester City on his debut for Spurs in a 2-0 win, but it is arguable that he hasn’t really been given a consistent enough run in the side since then.

Now, as per De Telegraaf, it is understood that Ajax are seriously interested despite his PSV roots, and they believe they could land Bergwijn for as little as €15m (£12.8m). However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wants at least €25m (£21.4m) and refuses to take a loss on the attacker after signing him for around £27m.

Flocking to this development on Ajax’s interest in Bergwijn, some Spurs supporters have had mixed responses on social media, with a few believing it would be foolish to sell whilst others plead for it to happen.

Still young and with plenty of potential, you can see why there are many Lilywhites supporters who don’t want him to leave. From the other side, Bergwijn hasn’t exactly lit up north London since his arrival, barring a slender handful of fine moments.

Check out a flavour of the fans’ verdicts from social media below.

Mexican standoff goes Canterbury's way

A more classic example of the frustrations which arise and the machinations which take place when a cricket match is affected by rain could hardly be imagined than that which occured at the Basin Reserve today when the second day of the Shell Trophy

Steve McMorran28-Nov-2000A more classic example of the frustrations which arise and the machinations which take place when a cricket match is affected by rain could hardly be imagined than that which occured at the Basin Reserve today when the second day of the Shell Trophy match between Wellington and Canterbury was lost without a ball being bowled.Inevitably, when rain interupts with the progress of a match which is already well advanced, it is in the interests of one of the participating teams to continue as soon as prudence allows and in the interests of the other to procrastinate as much as possible.Such was the case today when showers which were steady in the morning but became intermittent in the afternoon alternative nurtured and drowned the possibility that play might take place.Wellington and Canterbury found themselves in a stern, though diplomatice Mexican standoff – the former eager to play as soon as and for as long as possible and the other equally reluctant to concede conditions had improved enough to allow them to take the field. The umpires, as so often happens in such situations, found themselves mediators between the two parties, as powerless and as chivied as vote-counters in the American election.Wellington were due to resume today at 314-4 in their first innings with Roger Twose 27 not out and Chris Nevin 2 not out, eager to score as many runs as possible as quickly as possible in the interests of inserting Canterbury and making progress towards an outright win.Their position at the end of the first day was a strong one and they weren’t eager to see it eroded by the loss of a full day’s play. For that reason and in the knowledge an extra hour could be added to the end of play today to compensate for time lost, Wellington were keen for the umpires to delay any decision on the possible abandonment of play till the last possible moment. On the other hand Canterbury, who had spent a long, cold and essentially unprofitable day in the field yesterday to be left with little hope of winning this match weren’t as motivated to see play proceed. They were reasonably happy when umpires Evan Watkin and Ian Shine called for lunch to be taken at 12.30pm without a ball having been bowled in the morning session. And they were in no hurry as the rain alternately swept the ground and abated throughout the afternoon to hurry the process of restarting play. The umpires ultimately announced a ground inspection in the company with the captains, Wellington’s Matthew Bell and Canterbury’s Gary Stead, at 3pm. The conditions were then as good as they had been at any stage in the day and Wellington were adamant there was still a chance that some of the day could be saved.Wellington coach Vaughn Johnson had made attempts throughout the day to practically demonstrate that all was not lost by assisting the groundstaff to ventilate troublesome damp matches around the periphery of the covers. But no sooner had the umpires announced a further ground inspection at 4pm than the rain resumed and with sufficient intensity for Wellington’s resolve to be disturbed. There was then agreement among all parties, with the assent of the umpires, that play should be abandoned for the day.It will resume at 10.30am tomorrow with no provision in the playing conditions for lost time to be reclaimed. The forecast for the third day is also for showers.

Charlton keen on Jordan Graham

Charlton must act swiftly to land Gillingham attacker Jordan Graham this summer amid interest from League One rivals.

What’s the talk?

According to Football League World, the Addicks are interested in signing the attacker this summer to bolster their attacking options going into next season. The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the month and is set to become a free agent in July, allowing Charlton to potentially sign him for nothing.

However, Charlton’s League One rivals Lincoln have stolen a march on their rivals in the race to land Graham. Football League World’s report added that the beaten play-off finalists have already been in talks with Graham and have now firmed up their interest with a contract offer for the 26-year-old, with Charlton and Birmingham lagging behind the Imps in the transfer pursuit.

Gillingham manager Steve Evans was full of praise for the “outstanding” attacker in 2020 after an impressive showing against Burton. He told Kent Online: “He (Graham) was outstanding.

“Colin Daniel (the Burton left-back) is a great lad, he’s played for me (at Peterborough) but he didn’t know where he was when Jordan got on the ball, credit to Jordan.

“He is a confidence boy, you have to feed him and give him the ball, we have to get him to work a little bit harder but you could say that about every wide player in the world.”

Charlton must act swiftly

Charlton must act swiftly to make sure that they win the race to land Graham. This update suggests that Lincoln are racing out in front but there is still time for the Addicks to accelerate and overtake their rivals to secure his services for next season. Nothing is done and dusted yet and Charlton still have the chance to make their own offer in an attempt to snap him up, which they should be looking to do given his quality.

Graham caught the eye with a string of dazzling performances in League One for Gillingham and he could be a superb addition to Nigel Adkins’ squad. The former Wolves winger averaged a brilliant SofaScore rating of 7.20 in League One as he produced a whopping 12 goals and six assists in 36 starts. This shows that he has the quality to produce regularly at this level, which proves that he is good enough to make a big impact for Charlton in League One.

The £2,100-per-week dynamo outperformed Charlton’s wide players by some distance. Liam Millar and Graham Shinnie regularly played on the wings for Adkins and provided five goals and 12 assists between them. Creatively, both of them matched Graham’s tally of six, but Shinnie’s three goals and Millar’s two fell well short of Graham’s 12-goal haul for Gillingham.

This suggests that the 26-year-old could be a substantial upgrade on Adkins’ current wide options because of the goal threat he carries, so they must not let Lincoln snap him up without at least putting up a fight.

AND in other news, Claim emerges on “powerhouse” £5.4k-p/w dynamo that will have Charlton fans buzzing…

The Punjab-Delhi Under-22 encounter at the Palam Ground in New Delhi sawvisitors Punjab take home 5 points after the match was drawn today, on the thirdand final day

Anand Vasu17-Dec-2000The Punjab-Delhi Under-22 encounter at the Palam Ground in New Delhi sawvisitors Punjab take home 5 points after the match was drawn today, on the thirdand final day. Despite letting Delhi get 336 in their first essay, Punjab battedout the rest of the match to make 591/8. Having let Punjab get such a huge lead,Delhi had to be content with 3 points. On winning the toss on Friday, Delhi skipper S Rauf elected to bat first.Stumper Varun Kumar did his skipper proud by slamming 147 (295 balls, 22 fours)at the top of the order. However, Varun Kumar had very little support from histeammates. Only S Vaid with 58 managed to stick around at the crease for awhile, but that too was not enough. After 123.2 overs of batting, Delhi couldmanage only 336.Punjab with their strong batting line up brushed aside the Delhi score withease. Opting not to make a match of it, Punjab batted out the remaining time toreach 591/8 when the match ended. For Punjab all batsmen were among the runs, but Under-19 star Ravneet Ricky was by far the best, with 146 (253 balls, 23fours). Apart from Ricky, Amit Behl (85), Ankur Kakkar (98) and HarikrishnanKali (90) were among the runs. As it turned out, Punjab were happy with the 5points they got from securing the first innings lead and the match ended in thetamest of draws.

Shaiza Khan spins Pakistan women to narrow victory against Netherlands

Pakistan women whipped Netherlands by four wickets in the second match, played at National Stadium, Karachi, to take two-nil lead in the seven match series

Mahmood Ahmad11-Apr-2001Pakistan women whipped Netherlands by four wickets in the second match, played at National Stadium, Karachi, to take two-nil lead in the seven match series. In yet another poor display of ball-control, the Dutch bowlers threw 67 wides out of a total of 73 extras, while defending a meager 161.This is the Dutch visitors¡¯ second defeat within three days, after their one-wicket humiliation in the first match of the series. In that particular match, they gave away 66 extras, including 45 wides to manufacture their own demise.Apart from the number of extras conceded, the Dutch players were strangled by the Pakistan skipper Shiaza Khan. The right-handed leg break bowler removed the four top order batswomen to force the visitors against the wall from the start of their innings. She grabbed one more wicket after that to complete a magnificent five-wicket haul for just 35 runs.Put into bat Pakistan skipper Shaiza Khan, the Dutch women were boosted by a well-made 58 by B Viguurs. Coming at the crease after the fall of five wickets, the right-handed Viguurs grafted her innings with caution after Shaiza had the done initial damage, reducing the visitors to 68 for five by the 19th over. She added 27 for the 6th wicket with Oudolf 13 (28 balls, 1 four) to take the score close to one hundred run mark. The fall of two quick wickets at this stage reduced Netherlands to 106 for seven by the 34th over.It was at this point that Viguurs shook off her defensive approach and almost single-handedly took the score to 160 in the allotted 50 overs. She remained unbeaten with 58 against her name. She hit 6 boundaries in an innings spanning 124 balls. The Dutch skipper Pauline te Beest also played a useful knock of 32 to provide a stable foundation for Viguurs to get some runs in the later overs. She faced 52 balls and smashed 4 fours before becoming one of Shaiza Khan¡¯s five victims.Apart from Shaiza, Khursheed Jabeen also bowled well taking two for 34 in nine overs. Kiran Baluch and Mehwish Khan grabbed one wicket each for 25 (10 overs) and 10 (5 overs), respectively.Pakistnan women, in their reply, started shakily, losing two wickets for just 20 on the board. It was only for a 40-run third wicket partnership between Kiran Baluch (29) and Rabia Khan (8), which brought stability to the score.Getting rid of these two for 85 by the 22nd over, Netherlands gave themselves a fair chance to come back into the match. But some very wayward bowling at this stage allowed Pakistan to steal a close victory.Sajjida Shah, the player of the match in the previous encounter, played yet another patient knock to ultimately steer her side through. Yet it was her slow tactic, facing 104 balls to score 11, which really took the match in the 49th over of the innings.Shaiza Khan was declared player of the match for his excellent match winning display of spin bowling. The next match of the series will be played Thursday, April 11.

Leeds showing ‘concrete interest’ in Lang

Leeds United are showing ‘concrete interest’ in signing Club Brugge forward Noa Lang this summer, according to a report which has emerged on Saturday morning.

The Lowdown: Lang linked with Leeds switch

Marcelo Bielsa could be a busy man during the next transfer window, making quality additions to a squad that has just finished ninth in the Premier League.

Lang is a player who has been linked with a move to Leeds a number of times, having caught the eye for Brugge, scoring 16 goals and registering seven assists in the Jupiler Pro League last season.

The Latest: Fresh update provided

The Whites’ interest continues to look strong, with Football Insider now claiming that they are intensifying their efforts to sign the 21-year-old.

It is stated that Lang is one of six signings Leeds hope to bring in this summer, with the youngster seen as someone who could slot straight into the first-team.

A Leeds source has told the outlet the Whites will ‘step up’ their interest in the youngster, but do face competition to secure a deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-5/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Ideal summer signing?

Lang looks an exciting prospect with great potential and a player who could add quality and depth to Leeds’ squad.

He has been described as the ‘best player’ in the Jupiler Pro League by analyst Filip Joos.

One of the keys to Bielsa’s team going up another level is having even more options throughout the squad, and the Dutchman would provide competition for places in attacking areas.

His end product speaks for itself and his average of 1.8 key passes per game in the league last season was only bettered at Leeds by Raphinha (2.1), so he could bring some extra creativity to Elland Road.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly lost interest in signing one player this summer. Find out who it is here.
