Palmer: Gallagher signing was always going to be tough for Leeds

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer believes it was always going to be difficult for his old club to sign Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher.

As per TEAMtalk, Marcelo Bielsa was keen on bringing Gallagher to Elland Road on loan but ended up missing out on him to Crystal Palace.

Leeds were able to acquire another midfielder with Chelsea connections in Lewis Bate, signing the 18-year-old on a three-year deal, but the Whites will still be disappointed that they lost the race for Gallagher’s signature.

From Palmer’s perspective, though, it was always going to be tough to lure the England U21 international to the Yorkshire club.

“It’s a difficult one, isn’t it?” the ex-Leeds player said. “You’ve got to remember, he’s a London boy. His parent club is Chelsea, so if a club comes in for him and he hasn’t got to leave, he can stay in London, then obviously that’s going to be his first choice.

“I think he’s likely to get more first-team football at Crystal Palace because Leeds have a very, very good side. And then obviously with the opportunity to work with Patrick Vieira, who’s a legend of the game, I think it was always going to be difficult for Leeds.”

Since officially joining Palace, Gallagher has spoken about Vieira being influential in his decision to spend the season at Selhurst Park.

As long as he gets game time, it should be a good move, though it would have been interesting to see how he would have developed under a brilliant coach in Bielsa.

Andre Nel has been recalled to South Africa’s Test squad for their four-match series against England. The selectors have announced a 15-man squad, with Nel being the only addition to the group which went on the recent tour to India, from which he was controversially omitted.”It is a long tour with two lots of back-to-back Test matches and we all know what the rate of attrition of fast bowlers can be,” Joubert Strydom, the chairman of selectors, said while explaining Nel’s inclusion. “In addition, we feel that we will need to give Dale Steyn a bit of a rest as he has been bowling regularly in the IPL (Indian Premier League).”He [Steyn] is one of our key weapons and we want him to be at his best when the Test series gets underway,” Strydom said. “The same applies to Makhaya Ntini while Morne Morkel is coming back from [a hamstring] injury.”Strydom also stressed on the importance of the bench strength for the tour. “With the tour taking place out of the South African season, we need to make sure that we have back-up strength that is match fit and in form in case of injury.”The recall will come as a boost to Nel, who was disappointed after being left out of the squad to India due to Cricket South Africa’s transformation policy, which mandates six coloured players in touring parties. There were even reports that he was planning to quit the national team altogether. The situation was further exacerbated when Charl Langeveldt, his replacement, dropped out of the squad due to the controversy surrounding his selection. The selectors then decided upon Monde Zondeki, who has since earned a contract with the board, while Langeveldt turned his back on South African cricket after signing a Kolpak deal with Derbyshire. The squad will assemble for a training camp in mid-June before leaving for England on June 24.Squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Ashwell Prince (vice-capt), Neil McKenzie, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Mark Boucher (wk), JP Duminy, Morne Morkel, Robin Peterson, Paul Harris, Dale Steyn, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Monde Zondeki.

Villa transfer news on El Ghazi & Wesley

A source from Aston Villa has claimed that Dean Smith is now willing to sell both Anwar El Ghazi and Wesley before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Villa busy

Villa have been very busy in the transfer market so far, using the money that they earned from selling Jack Grealish to Manchester City to bring in the likes of Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings.

With all of their new arrivals, they may now have to stat trimming their squad down, leaving some players at risk of going through the exit door at Villa Park in the coming weeks.

The Latest: Smith stance

As per Football Insider, an AVFC source has claimed that Smith is now willing to offload both El Ghazi and Wesley as the result of his transfer business so far.

Potential moves away from England for the duo re the most likely at this stage, and there is ‘strong interest’ in El Ghazi from AS Roma, who is currently valued by Villa at £15m.

Wesley reportedly has interest from teams in Belgium, Turkey and Holland, although they are all likely to prefer a loan move as opposed to a permanent deal.

The Verdict: Sell both

If Villa can get £15m for El Ghazi, then it would prove to be good business, as his game time will now be severely limited by the arrivals of Buendia, Bailey and Ings.

Described as ‘unstoppable’ in training by former teammate Alan Hutton back in December, he can certainly be a handful, but now may be the best time to cash in on him.

As for Wesley, he has had a terrible time with injuries while in the Midlands, and currently earns £46,000-per-week at Villa Park.

With the arrival of Ings as well, his playing time will also be very limited, and so it would be a good idea just to get his wages off of the books.
