Crystal Palace pull out of Kabak race

Crystal Palace have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Schalke 04 defender Ozan Kabak.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have been heavily linked with a move for the highly-rated 21-year-old throughout the summer as new manager Patrick Vieira attempts to overhaul the first-team squad.

However, according to well-known journalist Ed Aarons, Palace have now dropped their interest in Kabak, with Spanish heavyweights Sevilla jumping to the front of the queue for this signature.

He tweeted: “Palace have now dropped their interest in Ozan Kabak, with Sevilla now looking most likely destination for the Turkey defender”.

Patrick Vieira will be gutted

A recent report by German outlet Bild (as relayed by Sport Witness), claimed Palace had ‘offered €8m so far’ for the Turkey international, but it seems as though they never followed up their interest in the centre-back.

Vieira has already added significant strength in the heart of defence, signing Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen from Chelsea and Lyon respectively.

Nevertheless, the French tactician will still surely be gutted that chairman Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman were unable to secure the services of Kabak.

With the experienced trio of Gary Cahill, Mamadou Sakho and Scott Dann departing on free transfers, the former Nice boss may feel he is still rather light on numbers in central defence.

While Martin Kelly and Cheikhou Kouyate are capable deputies, neither are natural centre-backs, leaving James Tomkins are the only conventional backup.

And although a new right-winger and another striker should arguably take priority for the capital club over another defender, missing out on the chance the snap up such a promising prospect as Kabak in a cut-price deal is something Palace will be disappointed about.

Schalke’s relegation to the second tier of German football left them desperate to offload one of their highest earners, and his time on loan at Liverpool last season showcased his ability and potential.

His arrival at Selhurst Park would have added genuine strength in depth to Vieira’s ranks, but it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Kabak will be returning to English shores this summer.

Flintoff fails as Lancashire struggle

A summary of the latest action in the County Championship

Chris Tremlett and James Tomlinson’s brave last-wicket stand of 84 lifted Hampshire to a healthier total of 327 against Lancashire at The Rose Bowl. Andrew Flintoff made just 2, one of four edges snapped up by Nic Pothas, as Tomlinson and Dimitri Mascarenhas made inroads into Lancashire’s reply. Lou Vincent should have been held by Rory Kleinveldt at slip early in his innings, and he made Hampshire pay with 83 from 168 balls. After putting on 96 in 31 overs with Stuart Law (43), Vincent played a rare rash shot against Tomlinson, and Mascarenhas removed Law in the next over. At the close Lancashire were 229 for 5, trailing by 98.After Yorkshire had much the better of the first day, Azhar Mahmood’s persistence brought him six wickets to finally dismiss them for 410 at Canterbury. Mahmood ended with 6 for 55, leaving Yorkshire to perhaps rue not having pressed home their advantage. There was more to come from Kent, too, with the bat. Robert Key showed his determination with an unbeaten hundred that pushed Kent to 298 for 6 by the close, Joe Denly and James Tredwell both having fallen for 48 but not before they had provided Key with some useful assistance. Tredwell’s stand with Key amounted to 139 before he offered a simple bat-pad catch to short-leg on 48.Zander de Bruyn’s century led Somerset to 324 for 6 on the second day against Durham at Chester-le-Street after rain had washed out the opening day. James Hildreth and Peter Trego also chipped in fifties to lift the visitors who were at one stage 42 for 3 courtesy of Steve Harmison, who picked up Neil Edwards, Hildreth and Justin Langer for a duck in the space of six balls. Harmison was the only Durham bowler who troubled Somerset, with both Liam Plunkett and Graham Onions – returning from a heel injury – struggling on a placid pitch. Trego was unbeaten on 67 from 88 balls at the close going into the third day.For John Ward’s summary of Nottinghamshire’s match against Surrey at Trent Bridge, click here.Second DivisionThirteen wickets fell on the second day as Derbyshire lost 7 for 97 to tumble to 208 all out and then Leicestershire in turn collapsed to 109 for 6, still trailing by 99 at Derby. Wavell Hinds’ run-out on 44 sparked the touchpaper for the blaze of Derbyshire wickets, Jim Allenby and Tom Smith picking off wickets at will to end with three each. Matthew Boyce mustered 38 in Leicestershire’s reply, though three of their South Africans were out cheaply much like some of their international countrymen at Lord’s. It was another South African, Charl Langeveldt, who did the damage with 3 for 24 as Leicestershire slipped to to 117 for 6.It was a pair of South Africans who lent cheer to Northamptonshire, however; Lance Klusener and Johan van der Wath picking up their side from 153 for 7 with an unbroken stand so far worth 87. Both reached their fifties by the close, pushing their team’s lead to 118 against Worcestershire at New Road. For the first time this summer Simon Jones went wicketless, bowling 16 fruitless overs as Klusener and van der Wath took the attack to Worcestershire. Klusener’s innings was not without alarm – a fortunate edge over the slips off Matt Mason – and it was his partner who showed the greater fluency, smashing three fours in one particularly damaging over. van der Wath was not-out on 69 from 86 balls at stumps going into the final day of this rain-curtailed match.Danish Kaneria wasted no time making up for a lost opening day, his five wickets removing Glamorgan for a sorry 132 at Cardiff. Essex made strides into the total, with Varun Chopra and Jason Gallian moving them on to an unbeaten 54-run opening stand by stumps. The other wickets were shared around for the visitors, with their current golden boy Graham Napier making the first breakthrough, removing Richard Grant for 10. Michael Powell and Gareth Rees reached their thirties but they could do little to stop their side losing the last eight wickets for 31. Essex showed Glamorgan how to do it, Chopra and Gallian smacking 54 before play was abandoned in the afternoon due to rain.Eoin Morgan’s unbeaten hundred lifted Middlesex from a wobble at 64 to 4 to a commanding 282 for 6, and he was joined in his efforts by the impressive Ben Scott, the pair adding a confidence-restoring 172 for the fifth wicket. Scott finally fell on 83, one of three catches behind for a toiling Gloucestershire at Bristol. It was Morgan’s maiden Championship hundred and, though his and Middlesex’s innings rarely flowed freely, matters weren’t helped by several frustrating breaks for showers. Ian Saxelby, Gloucestershire’s young trialist bowler, picked up his maiden wicket when Tim Murtagh feathered a short delivery outside his off stump, and Scott fell to Chris Taylor for 83.

Laudrup worried about Gers’ Goldson

Glasgow Rangers legend Brian Laudrup has admitted he is worried about the future of Connor Goldson as the central defender’s reported new contract remains unsigned.

The Lowdown: Goldson future uncertain

At the moment, Goldson has just one year left on his contract at Ibrox (Transfermarkt), but there were reports the Gers were looking to offer him a new three-year extension (Football Insider).

However, negotiations seem to be taking forever, and there has not yet been any breakthrough.

The Latest: Laudrup worried

Writing in his column for The Daily Mail (via The Daily Record), Laudrup expressed his concern. He said:

“Goldson has been regarded as the best central defender at the club rightly so, in my opinion – so why didn’t he sign a new contract months ago?

“All the noises have been very positive. Yet nothing has been confirmed. What’s the issue? It seems strange.

“I always think clarity is key for a player. Otherwise, performances can be affected.

“I know fans will say you are paid a lot of money to get on with it and that’s absolutely true.

“But it’s not easy to just switch your brain off from thinking about what’s next for your family, how and where will they be settled? I can sympathise with anyone in that position.

“You go home and talk about it with your wife or partner. You discuss all the options and worries.

“It uses up energy. When those aspects of your life are sorted, you can concentrate fully on being a footballer.

“I don’t know Goldson personally, or what’s in his mind just now, but finalising his situation one way or the other would surely be best for all parties. There has to be an outcome soon.

“He hasn’t started the season in great form and maybe this issue has been a contributor.”

The Verdict: Get it sorted

Time is running out for Rangers to sort out the 28-year-old’s future. With just one year left on his contract, it means £6.75m-valued Goldson (Transfermarkt) can negotiate with other clubs as early as January if a deal is not signed before then and he does not leave this summer.

Last season, the former Brighton man played every single minute of every single game in all competitions, and has already done the same so far this term – it is clear he is a hugely important player for Steven Gerrard. As such, the boss and Ross Wilson should push to get Goldson’s future resolved as soon as possible.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this interview.

England set for their highland fling

This is the first time the Auld Enemy have met in a one-day international and it’s the biggest match staged north of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s an occasion when Scotland have nothing to lose and everything to gain

Big PictureThis is the first time the Auld Enemy have met in a one-day international and it’s the biggest match staged north of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s an occasion which Scotland have nothing to lose and everything to gain. It shouldn’t be a contest with the likes of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff going head-to-head with a collection of county and club professionals. However, these matches can do funny things to the so-called ‘big boys’ as they attempt to avoid an embarrassing banana skin. In 2006 England made hard work of beating Ireland and if the dank, damp weather of recent weeks hangs around the conditions will be ideal for Scotland’s motley crew of honest seamers. For England, though, this should be useful preparation for the one-day series against South Africa and allow the players to switch from first-class cricket into limited-overs mode. If Scotland can pull off an upset, expect the mother of all parties in Edinburgh. It’s just a shame there isn’t television coverage of the match.Form guideEngland LLLNRW
Scotland NRLWLWWatch out for…Matt Prior After being dumped following his spate of dropped catches in Sri Lanka, Prior has earned another chance after a prolific season for Sussex. Firstly his opportunity is in the one-day game, but the signs are pointing towards a Test recall if all goes to plan over the next three weeks. He will probably open, although given the revolving door that is the top order for England in one-day cricket nothing is certain. However, Prior’s ability to hit through and over the infield with proper, orthodox batting make him the perfect man to give England the rapid starts they have been craving.Gavin Hamilton It’s often easy to forget, but Hamilton has an England Test cap to his name, although his appearance at Johannesburg in 1999 amounted to a pair and no wickets. His returns for Scotland during the 1999 World Cup earned him that chance and since his first-class career, taking in Yorkshire and Durham, ended he has became a valuable source of experience. He doesn’t bowl anymore, but his solid batting in the top order often provides the ballast for Scotland and he’ll be key against the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.John Blain Another with county experience having played for Yorkshire and Northamptonshire, England will underestimate Blain at their peril. He has been in good form recently, taking consistent hauls in one-day, Twenty20 and first-class cricket. He can set the tone with the new ball and a couple of early wickets will boost confidence through the Scotland team.Team newsScotland are boosted by the availability of their county batsmen – Kyle Coetzer of Durham and Navdeep Poonia of Warwickshire – who will add strength to the top order when coupled with the experience of Gavin Hamilton and captain Ryan Watson. They have a good hand of seam bowlers, with the final decision likely to come down to between Richie Berrington, Gordon Drummond and the left-arm spin of Ross Lyons. One of Scotland’s most experienced players, Fraser Watts, hasn’t been able to find a place in the squad.Scotland (from) Ryan Watson (capt), Gavin Hamilton, Kyle Coetzer, Navdeep Poonia, Colin Smith, Neil McCallum, Richie Berrington, Craig Wright, Calum MacLeod, John Blain, Dewald Nel, Gordon Drummond, Ross LyonsEngland have injuries among their pace attack with Ryan Sidebottom missing and Chris Tremlett doubtful with Tim Bresnan being called up as cover. The most interesting aspect will be the make-up of the opening pair. Matt Prior is back and the most likely combination would be him with Ian Bell, who took that position against New Zealand. The other options include Luke Wright and Owais Shah, the latter opening in one match for the Lions against the South Africans. With Paul Collingwood serving his four-match suspension there is a middle-order place available which could hand Samit Patel a debut.England (possible) 1 Ian Bell, 2 Matt Prior (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Owais Shah, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Samit Patel, 8 Luke Wright, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonUmpires: Peter Baldwin (Germany) and Simon Taufel (Australia)Pitch and conditionsPredictably, given the weather in recent weeks, the forecast is poor for Monday with rain forecast throughout the day. With all the rain the pitch is likely to favour the seamers and could play fairly slowly.Stats and TriviaThe Grange has hosted three previous one-day internationals, two during the 1999 World Cup and the most recent when Scotland played Pakistan in 2006The highest score batting first is Scotland’s 203 for 8 against Pakistan, which the visitors knocked off with 37 balls to spare. The best individual score is Mohammad Yousuf’s 83 not out and the best bowling figures belong to Chris Harris, who took 4 for 7 in 1999.When Scotland played Nottinghamshire in 2004, Ryan Watson had Kevin Pietersen caught behind for a first-ball duck.Quotes”Obviously they are in a different league to ourselves, but I don’t think there is anything to fear. The country is only 150 miles from us and that means it’s a big match for us all, and it’s something that should be embraced and enjoyed.”

Steve Harmison, who came out of ODI retirement yesterday and was promptly selected in England’s XI to face South Africa at Headingley, has insisted that his return has nothing to do with financial reasons. He is now available for England’s match against Stanford Superstars on November 1, a game which will earn each victorious player more than £500,000. Yet Harmison denied claims that he was returning for financial reasons.”I retired from one-day cricket for cricketing reasons and I’m coming back for cricketing reasons,” he told BBC Radio. “Originally if I was going to come back I was going to come back on November 2 – I’m not coming back for financial reasons.”Harmison said that a settled family life helped him come to the decision. “After recently being asked by the England management to reassess my retirement from international one-day cricket I’ve decided to join England’s ODI squad after careful consideration,” he said yesterday. “It’s something I have been thinking about for a period of time and due to recent injuries in the England camp the opportunity has arisen for me to play a role in this series.”I decided to retire from England’s ODI team for a number of reasons, one being the amount of time I was spending away from my family,” he said. “Now that my family is settled and my bowling is settled I feel I have something to offer England’s ODI side and am looking forward to playing a part in the series against South Africa.”Harmison announced his ODI retirement following the Ashes in Australia and his last ODI was against Australia in Jaipur during the 2006 Champions Trophy. It is a major U-turn from Harmison who, despite his successful return to the Test team at The Oval, continued to insist he was happy to stay out of ODIs.However, Kevin Pietersen spoke about wanting him back in the one-day side following the Test series against South Africa. “It would be lovely to have him coming in first-change with the white ball, but you don’t always get what you want in life,” he said. Clearly Pietersen has been able to help change Harmison’s mind.Harmison returned to the Test team earlier this month for the first time since being dropped following the Hamilton Test in New Zealand in March. He said that being out of the England set-up has made him hungry to return in both formats of the game. However, he isn’t looking beyond the forthcoming five ODIs against South Africa”Having missed out on selection at various times this year I am well aware of the disappointment that comes from not being a part of the England dressing room,” he said. “With that in mind I want to be a part of the team and if that means bringing myself out of retirement to play a role in this upcoming series then I’m happy to do just that.Harmison has played 46 ODIs, taking 67 wickets at 30.70 with best figures of 5 for 33 against Australia, in Bristol, in 2005. He also has an ODI hat-trick, against India at Trent Bridge in 2004.
