South Africa’s search for a quality spinner could end next year, when legspinner Imran Tahir, who was born in Lahore, qualifies to play for the country. Tahir, married to a South African woman, will be available to play for South Africa on April 1, 2009, and the bowler is eager to play at the “highest level”.”South Africa is now my country,” Tahir said. “I’ll be available for South Africa on April 1.” That date will be exactly fours years since Tahir played for Pakistan A. If South Africa’s selectors decide to pick Tahir, who plays for the Titans, he could be in line for his debut during the home ODI series against Australia, which starts on April 3.”My biggest ambition, ever since I was a boy in Pakistan, has been to play cricket at the highest level. If I can do so for South Africa, I’ll give everything. I am a South African now and this is where my loyalty lies.”Tahir, 29, has taken 291 first-class wickets at an average of 25.07 and 74 List A scalps at 21.74. In the 2007-08 season, he took 31 wickets in six first-class games for the Titans and 14 in eight one-dayers at an average of 16.50 and economy-rate of 4.21. He joined Hampshire for the 2008 county season and was one of the better overseas signings: in seven Championship matches, he took 44 wickets at 16.68.”I have learnt that patience is important; patience when you bowl and also in how you handle life,” he said. “I enjoy a challenge and it will be a huge challenge to try to get into my new country’s team. I realise, therefore, that much attention will be focused on me when I play for the Titans in the domestic season. I will have to perform. But I believe in my ability. That’s why I don’t back away from any challenge.”I still have a number of years of good cricket in me. The support I receive from my family and friends also helps a lot. I believe one should work hard to get what you want. After I was selected for Pakistan’s Under-19 team, I bowled on my own for three hours a day. That’s where my accuracy comes from.”

Angry Harbhajan lashes out at Gilchrist

Harbhajan Singh has hit back at Adam Gilchrist’s comments on Sachin Tendulkar and said that Gilchrist was not respected anyway due to his own on-field behaviour. Gilchrist labelled as a “joke” the evidence Tendulkar gave in January during the hearing into Harbhajan’s alleged racist remarks against Andrew Symonds.”He should not be talking about Sachin. It is all rubbish,” Harbhajan told the . “We don’t respect him. He pretends to be a saint and people say he walks when he nicks, but why did he appeal when batsmen don’t nick?”He always changes his mind according to a situation. If Australia is close to a victory he is always going up [appealing], whether it is out or not out. We don’t need him to say these things [about Tendulkar] just because he is retired.”Harbhajan was alleged to have called Symonds a monkey and was initially suspended for three Tests, although the ban was overturned on appeal. Gilchrist was annoyed that Tendulkar told the appeal Harbhajan had used a Hindi term that sounded like monkey, although he had earlier given evidence that he could not hear Harbhajan’s comment.”I don’t want to talk about that episode again and again. It is over,” Harbhajan said. “If you talk to any guy who plays or follows cricket about Sachin Tendulkar, they will talk about the respect he commands. These guys can’t come close to him. I am really shocked.”Harbhajan said the ill-feeling between the two sides that spilled over in the series in Australia had long since passed. He said both teams had played in the right spirit in the first two Tests in India this month.”We are very focused on cricket and on the next Test in Delhi,” Harbhajan said. “We know Australia will come back very strong. It has been a great series so far. There have been no dramas in the first two Tests. I hope the next two will be played in the gentleman’s spirit.”

Pundit hints at Matt Doherty joining Everton on deadline day

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told Football FanCast there have been murmurings about a possible late deadline day move to Everton for Matt Doherty.

Doherty joined Tottenham from Wolves last summer in a £15m deal, but failed to show the kind of form that made him one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League at Molineux.

He did make 13 starts in the league last season but has already slipped behind Japhet Tanganga in the right-back pecking order despite reuniting with Nuno Espirito Santo following his appointment in north London.

Doherty hasn’t started a league game this season, playing just seven minutes overall, with the Conference League likely to be his best pathway for regular minutes.

Emerson Royal’s arrival is expected to reduce Doherty’s chances even further of breaking into Santo’s side, and therefore Bridge revealed that a shock move to Everton could be on the cards.

He told Football FanCast:

“I’ve not heard anything yet, but there have been murmurings of Everton, but I don’t know if there’s anything in it. But I do wonder if he’s been touted about, and a club might go ‘well give him a go’.”

I knew I could get eight – Krejza

At the end of his first innings it will be Jason Krejza’s magical return of eight wickets that will be remembered before the 215 runs from 43.5 overs

Watching Jason Krejza on the second day was even more addictive than during the first. Attacking spinners know they will get hit in the search for wickets and Krejza received a lot of success and punishment. At the end of his first innings it will be the magical return of eight wickets that will be remembered before the 215 runs from 43.5 overs. If Krejza never plays another Test – that’s a bit unlikely now – he will always be a record-breaker. When Simon Katich grabbed a sharp one-handed take to remove Ishant Sharma, Krejza became only the sixth bowler to earn eight wickets in an innings on debut.”It’s a bit of a blur still,” Krejza said after play. “I tried to keep doing what I was doing. I was happy to get the wickets. It’s still unbelievable to me.”Five of Krejza’s victims came in 19 runs as India were dismissed for 441 and during that period Krejza was battling to remain calm. “I was just trying to keep my emotions under control,” he said. “When the five-for came around, that’s the moment I’ll always remember, with a great catch from Michael Clarke. I thought I bowled better today than yesterday. I’ve started really well in Test cricket.”Sourav Ganguly was Krejza’s fifth victim, when he edged low to Clarke at first slip, and it was the point Krejza realised he could take eight. Only Albert Trott, Alf Valentine, Bob Massie, Narendra Hirwani and Lance Klusener had done that before.”When I was getting my five-for Binga [Brett Lee] said: ‘You can get eight-for here.’ I believed that and I kept going and got a bagful.”After bowling Dhoni and then removing Ganguly in the same over, he finished off the innings by capturing Zaheer Khan (1), Amit Mishra (0) and Ishant (0) in nine balls. Despite the five quick wickets on the second day, his favourite dismissal was his first one on Thursday, when Rahul Dravid popped a catch to Katich at short-leg.”That was the stand-out,” he said. “My strategy was if he came at it with low hands, and if I got some bounce, I could get him. It was a plan and it worked.”There were a clutch of other milestones for Krejza, including his maiden first-class five-wicket haul, and becoming the 14th Australian to achieve such a collection on debut. His figures were also the most expensive of any first-gamer in an innings, beating West Indian Omari Banks’ 3 for 204 in 2003 against Australia.Krejza, a surprise selection on the tour, was forced to wait until the final test to get an opportunity, but he has quickly moved up the slow-bowling pecking order. “It was an honour for me to be here in the first place,” he said. “For me to play was an even greater one. [Waiting] never worried me, I knew I was going to get a go at some stage.”While the swiftness of Krejza’s inspired collapse lifted the tourists, it also created some concern. If Krejza could do this, what would Harbhajan Singh do? By stumps Harbhajan had only one wicket, having bowled Ricky Ponting for 24, and the Australians were feeling much better.Katich’s 92 and Michael Hussey’s 45 had moved them to 189 for 2. “We’ve got ourselves into a really good position now where we have got two batsmen who are very good,” Krejza said. “It’s got us into a good position to win the game.”

Pukki has become a menace since leaving Celtic

If you look down the squad list of a club in the English top-flight, it’s more than likely that you’d find a player who plied their trade at Parkhead and donned the famous Celtic shirt.

A plethora of the Bhoys’ top talents have walked out on the club in search of better pay and a higher standard of football.

You only need to look at the recent transfer window, where Celtic lost Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie to south of the border. They even lost one of their finest academy players to England in Leo Hjelde.

Virgil van Dijk is the most famous example from years gone by, while Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong and Fraser Forster have all forged good careers elsewhere. However, one player who didn’t set the world alight in Glasgow has also been incredibly successful in England.

That happens to be Teemu Pukki. The Finnish striker didn’t impress hugely during his time at Celtic, scoring just nine times in 38 appearances.

That tally might not be in the same measly ballpark as Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala, but you can see why Ronny Deila decided to let him go in 2015.

However, on reflection, both the manager and fans alike will be happy to admit that it was a mistake to let him depart.

Deila himself revealed his regrets in 2019 over selling Pukki, saying: “He played my first matches at Celtic, but it seemed like the club was a little too big for him at the time. It may have been a mistake [letting him go out on loan to Brondby], as seen in retrospect.”

That came amid Pukki’s rather incredible form for Norwich. After leaving the Hoops behind for just £608,000, he is now valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

The Finn has been sensational after swapping Brondby for the Canaries and has racked up a grand haul of 68 goals in 129 outings at Carrow Road. His best season was undoubtedly in the 2018/19 campaign, when he was named the Championship’s Player of the Season after scoring 29 goals in 43 league games.

Commenting during a rich vein of form for the 31-year-old, Norwich manager Daniel Farke remarked: “I think he was unplayable during the whole game [vs Birmingham]. They had problems controlling his movement and he created a lot.”

Celtic would go on to bring Moussa Dembele and then Edouard to the club but it was evidently a mistake to sell a clinical attacker like Pukki as cheaply as they did.

West Ham fans rave over Vlasic outing

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left in awe of new signing Nikola Vlasic following his international outing for Croatia on Tuesday night.

Vlasic, who signed for the Irons on summer transfer deadline day, hasn’t yet featured under manager David Moyes due to the timing of his switch but could make his debut for the club this weekend.

The exciting 23-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract as West Ham paid an initial £26.8m, with an extra £7.7m in potential add-ons, to sign him from CSKA Moscow (BBC).

The Croatia international comes to east London with plenty of promise following his fantastic 2020/21 season in the Russian Premier League, where he averaged a four shots per game whilst bagging 11 goals and five assists (WhoScored).

After his outing for his nation against Slovenia on Tuesday evening, a match where he got on the scoresheet, had three attempts on goal and made three key passes (WhoScored), many West Ham fans have been raving about their “clever” new talent on Twitter, with one likening him to former Irons player Marko Arnautovic.

Check out some of their verdicts below.

“Nikola Vlašić’s goal for Croatia highlights his intelligent final third movement that makes him very capable of operating as a false nine when required. He’s a creator, dribbler and drifts into goalscoring positions often. Such a smart signing for West Ham”

“Vlasic did well to hold his run last night because on his first run he was Ignored.

Vlasic had to improvise & then he got a good cross for his goal.

Clever player

At West Ham I’m hoping his movement is noticed earlier, also the clever runs between defenders must be noticed.”
