“Quando perde um jogo e dois dias depois já tem outro, não dá pra pensar em críticas ou deixar o clima ficar ruim. Tem que descansar porque já tem jogo na quarta, tem que pensar em ganhar. Deixar um pouco de lado e sempre buscar a vitória no próximo jogo. Ruim quando tem semana cheia de trabalho vindo de derrota, o que não é o caso, tem jogos na sequência.”

O que desequilibra o São Paulo?
“A gente tem que caprichar um pouquinho na frente e atrás. Antes do jogo com o Corinthians, a gente só tinha tomado dois gols e feito bastante. Encontrar equilíbrio entre ataque e defesa. Com elenco que a gente tem, qualidade de todo mundo, a gente pode, sim, brigar lá em cima.”

Tricolor espera quebrar o tabu na Arena da Baixada?
“Por peso a mais, falar que nunca ganhou, não vem ao caso. A gente tem que jogar como a gente vem jogando, jogar jogos para ganhar. Claro que sempre evoluir, então espero que a gente possa fazer bom jogo lá e trazer vitória.”

Janela de transferências pode prejudicar o elenco?
“Quando algum dos times do Brasileiro perder um ou dois jogadores importantes é difícil. Pode acontecer aqui também, a gente e todos os times têm que estar preparados pra isso e ter sempre uma peça de reposição. Às vezes pode mudar, ou também não, porque saem e chegam jogadores. Isso a gente vai ver com o tempo durante o ano.”

At stumps the hosts were 3 for 241, 29 behind New Zealand’s below-par 270, and had lost a couple of opportunities to ensure they were the only ones capable of winning the game.There were times when the Australians seemed to be racing away, particularly in the middle session, but the visitors were able to hang on, although they will need early wickets on the third day if they harbour visions of levelling the series. Hussey grafted to an unbeaten 69 from 178 deliveries after Ponting shone with a classy 79 to lift the side after both openers departed before lunch.The pair’s 106-run third-wicket stand settled Australia as Ponting, who rattled 13 fours in his 124-ball stay, showed everyone how to bat on the placid pitch. However, he donated his wicket when aiming a pull to the two-metre Peter Fulton at midwicket without adding to his tea score. As he left, following a brief exchange with the bowler Iain O’Brien, he knew a big score had been handed in that would have pushed New Zealand out of the game.”I felt almost every ball was hit in the middle but I pulled up the innings a bit earlier than I would have liked,” Ponting said. “I got it about an inch from the middle but it just happened to go to the world’s tallest man.”Ponting brought up his fifty with two offside fours in an O’Brien over and at that stage 44 of his 53 runs had come from finding the rope. A pull off O’Brien stood out while he also looked comfortable against the impressive spin of Daniel Vettori, who gave up less than two runs an over in 28 of them. It was a hard day for New Zealand’s cloned fast-bowling attack and O’Brien was the only one to experience success.No batsman in this game has matched the ease with which Ponting has played and the performance had the indirect effect of making Hussey stand out. There were occasional breakthroughs, when he was allowed to drive or pull, but until Ponting’s dismissal he was batting with constraints.After Ponting left Hussey became the senior partner and relaxed, playing a couple of strong pulls from Vettori to bring up his half-century from 146 balls. Even during Hussey’s struggles there was no concern and he achieved his aim of reaching stumps. He will hope for more freedom on the third day and will start with Michael Clarke, who eased to 43, for company.Matthew Hayden started the innings in an intimidating manner in his 100th Test, but his hopes of a long stay were upset when he was run-out for 24 in a mix-up with Simon Katich. After struggling for consistency since returning from a heel injury in India, Hayden was untroubled until he pushed Vettori to mid-on, called for a single and turned around too late when Katich wasn’t interested.It was Hayden’s second run-out in the past three Tests. Katich quickly joined his partner when squirting a bat-pad catch to Jesse Ryder off Vettori, who found a bit of rough, and departed with 23.New Zealand, who started the second morning at 6 for 262, added only eight runs and lasted another 8.3 overs, with Brett Lee picking up four wickets. Any hope of a long partnership between McCullum and Vettori was ended in the third over when McCullum pushed away from his body on 30 and edged to Brad Haddin, who took a smart catch low to the ground.Johnson’s bouncer forced Tim Southee (2) into a fend to Katich at leg gully before Lee added his second and third wickets of the morning. Lee’s figures of 4 for 66 were his best since May and it was a timely haul following his struggles in India. Johnson finished with 2 for 56 from 25 overs to follow Nathan Hauritz’s two wickets on the opening day.

The full extent of the financial problems plaguing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are only now becoming apparent as Ijaz Butt, the board chairman, described the financial position as “terrible” to senators.Butt claimed the board’s reserves had been halved over the last two years, in thinly-veiled digs at the administration of Nasim Ashraf, from whom he took over in October last year.”It stood at $42 million in October 2006, but when I took over as the chairman in October last year it was just $19 million,” Butt told the senate standing committee on sports. “Our finances are in terrible shape and that’s why we have shelved all the development plans.”India’s cancellation of their tour to Pakistan this month hasn’t helped matters, denting the board further to the tune of at least US$40 million and though Sri Lanka has replaced them and agreed to tour, the series will raise little – US$500,000 – compared to the effect an India series has. In the past – notably 2003-04 – when the board was in financial trouble, a series against the neighbours revived the situation completely.”We suffered a loss of at least $40 million while on the other hand India lost four times more than us,” Butt said. “The Sri Lanka series would help us generate just a small amount, but we do hope that the Indian cricket team tours Pakistan in the near future.” Butt is keen for ties to be revived between the two, even if it is away from home. He believes Pakistan will earn at least US$25-$30 million from playing India at a neutral venue as an alternative.Butt has been on a drive to cut burgeoning administrative costs wherever possible since he took over and the wage bill, he said, was his next target. The board’s workforce, an official confirmed to Cricinfo, has ballooned from 315 when Shaharyar Khan was removed in October 2006, to over 800 when Ashraf resigned in August 2008. Supposedly the second most prestigious one-day tournament after the World Cup, Butt said the tournament will likely be played in its entirety in Karachi and will bring in a much-needed US$5 million to the board.The senate has set another hearing for February 9 and asked Ashraf, Naghmi and current officials to appear.

You got the sense that Bruce’s relationship with those above him at the club was secure. They stood by him at the bleakest point of last season, the 3-0 defeat at Brighton in March.

However, if the fans are demanding that he be sacked, and influential figures are starting to turn against him, his time at St James’ Park may well be running out.

Kevin Campbell believes Lewis O’Brien could still sign for Leeds United, despite the Wednesday development of signing a new deal at Huddersfield Town.

The Lowdown: No move in summer

The Huddersfield midfielder was linked with a move to Elland Road during the previous transfer window and was subject to a £13million bid by the Premier League side, but a move never materialised and he remained at Huddersfield Town.

O’Brien, 22, came through the Town academy before spending the 2018/29 campaign on loan with Bradford City, making 40 appearances before becoming a key figure at Huddersfield, with over 85 appearances.

After links with Leeds, O’Brien signed a new contract this week, but Campbell, a regular on Sky Sports, doesn’t believe this is the end of the saga.

The Latest: Orta won’t give up

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Arsenal striker has claimed that, despite extending his stay at the Terriers, O’Brien could still be on Victor Orta’s radar.

When asked if the deal had gone, he said: “No, no, he could still sign for Leeds next year.

“He has signed a new contract to up his money and make sure that Huddersfield can get the fee that they want. If Leeds come in they are going to have to come in correct.

“At the end of the day it is easy to say he shouldn’t have signed a new contract but if Leeds really want him they will come in with a bid that satisfies Huddersfield.

“Listen, he has done the right thing by signing a new contract. If Leeds want him they will get him. Let’s see how it goes.”

O’Brien’s surge onto the scene at the John Smith Stadium has warranted links with a move to the Premier League. Last season, he started 39 times, completing 77% of his passes per game, whilst making 2 tackles per game and winning over 5 duels per 90 minutes.

Huddersfield’s 2019/20 Player of the Year winner has continued his impressive form this season, scoring one and assisting one already this season for Carlos Corberan’s team.
