ScorecardMiddlesex’s youngsters proved too strong for Surrey who were beaten by two wickets with three balls to spare in Sunday’s Pro Arch Trophy clash in Sharjah. After two wins from as many starts, Middlesex rested their captain andfront-line spinner, Shaun Udal, along with allrounder Tyron Henderson and batsman Dawid Malan for their third Group S game, but their superiortactics, team spirit and execution of their skills saw them reachWednesday’s Abu Dhabi final with an unblemished record despite a latebatting collapse.Responding to Surrey’s below-par total of 184 for 9, Middlesex got off to a solidstart under lights as young openers Billy Godleman and the well-organised Sam Robson both dug in responsibly. Robson, a wiry 19-year-old Australian-born right-hander, was spotted while playing for Perth-based club side Eastern Suburbs. With an English mother and a UK passport to his name, he looks to be a decent find.Godleman unfurled the occasional classy shot, including a clipped four off Stewart Walters over midwicket and a six into the seats over long on , but both batsmen were prepared to rotate the strike and sprint for their singles like whippets. The pair posted 101 for the first wicket before Robson, playing back to a shooting Schofield top-spinner, was bowled for a dogged 37 from 92 balls. Godleman sailed on sublimely to a 77-ball half century and looked untroubled in reaching 68 from 101 balls until a rush of blood, and a cross-batted slog against Murtaza Hussein, sent him packing.A further five Middlesex wickets fell to spin, as Usman Afzaal picked up 3 for 21, but his Middlesex counterpart Murtagh came in to hit the winning run.Surrey’s innings proved something of a stop-start affair a little likethe sandstorm that swept the ground for the first hour of thematch, only to end as suddenly as it started. It made conditions out in the middle uncomfortable for all involved. “I can still taste the sand in my mouth,” said Chris Silverwood. “It feels like I’ve been licking a camel’s foot!”Despite the sweeping sand, the Middlesex attack maintained theirfocus on the job in hand and produced the best combined bowling displayof this tournament to date. Silverwood, Alan Richardson, Steve Finn and acting captain Murtagh were all prepared to run in hard and hit the pitch just short of a goodlength. As a result, all four were hard to get away and, every time aSurrey batsman’s patience evaporated, Middlesex struck. In their opening spells Murtagh and Finn set the tone, bowling a tightline and length to tie down Surrey’s expansive right-hander JamesBenning whose patience ran thin when he clipped a return-catch to Murtagh. That was pretty much the trend for Surrey; only Scott Newman, with 56 from 83 balls and with five fours, showed the patience necessary to score on this firm pitch of unusually lowbounce.Even Usman Afzaal, captain for the day, was unable to hold his attackingintent in check and paid the price for an ill advised lofted drive whenhe holed out to mid-on off the excellent Richardson.”We’ve a nice bowling attack, of that there’s no doubt, there’s nothing flash to it; they run in and hit the wicket hard. That’s what they do,” said Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket. “I spoke to Graham Gooch after the first game in Sharjah last Tuesday and he advised it was no good floating the ball up here, the seamershad to hit the pitch at the back of a length and attack it and me andthe backroom staff are delighted how they did that.”It’s a very pleasant start for March 22 and we’re a month away fromour first Championship match, but I’d rather be playing the cricket wehave here than scratching around not knowing where our nextwicket is coming from.”After Newman’s departure only Stewart Walters showed much desire tobattle it out for Surrey, the 25-year-old Australian-born right-handernurdled his way to 33 from 58 balls before the red mist got to him andhe lost his leg stump to Gareth Berg as a result. It was a day Surreywill quickly want to forget.

Newcastle injury news on Wilson

Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has given his reaction to some Newcastle United injury news on Callum Wilson.

The Lowdown: Back after internationals?

A source from the St. James’ Park faithful has recently told Football Insider that Wilson is increasingly confident that he will be back available to play for the North East club after the international break has finished.

The former AFC Bournemouth striker has not played on Tyneside since he scored in the 2-2 draw at home to Southampton in the Premier League back in August.

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa star and England international Agbonlahor has said that having Wilson back will be a ‘big boost’, and the 34-year-old also thinks that Steve Bruce in particular will be ‘buzzing’ with the news:

“Definitely, it would be a big boost.

“Steve Bruce will be buzzing to get them back. That’s what they need.

“Judge him when he’s got his strongest team back.

“Every team has injuries but Steve Bruce has been unlucky because his squad is so small. When he has injuries he is tested dramatically.

“I’ve got no worries for Steve Bruce, he’ll be fine.”

The Verdict: Missed badly

There is no doubt that the Magpies have missed Wilson badly, having not being able to win any of the last four games in the Premier League without him, while only managing to score four goals in that time (Transfermarkt).

The Englishman himself had scored two in three matches before his injury, and will be welcomed back with open arms by the Toon Army.

Nonetheless, with news of the takeover going through as well, things are starting to look a lot brighter at NUFC, but we’re not so sure Bruce will be ‘fine’ just off some positive injury news.

Returning Smith boosts South Africa

Preview for the first one-day international between South Africa and Australia in Durban

April 3, 2009
Start time 2.30pm (12.30GMT)Big PictureIt seems that every time these teams go head to head there’s a No. 1 ranking up for grabs. Nothing has changed. South Africa took the top ODI spot thanks to their 4-1 victory in Australia in January but to retain their new status they need to stop Australia winning this five-game series. They will feel quietly confident with their captain Graeme Smith returning from a broken hand but Jacques Kallis is still not available due to a groin injury that kept him out of both the Twenty20 victories, although he should return for the second ODI on Sunday. This series is the finale in what has been a fascinating summer between these two sides, who by the end will feel as if they know each other intimately after six Tests, 10 ODIs and four Twenty20 internationals in the past four months. The hosts have no more cricket on the agenda until the World Twenty20 in England in June, so this will be the last opportunity for a few players to put their names forward for that tournament. Australia will head straight from South Africa to the United Arab Emirates for a limited-overs series against Pakistan.Form guide (last five ODIs, most recent first)South Africa WWWLW
Australia NWWLL
Watch out forGraeme Smith hasn’t been part of the South African side for any of the Twenty20s or one-day internationals against Australia up until now. A broken left hand kept him out of the matches in Australia and an almost identical fracture in his right hand stopped him playing the third Test and two Twenty20s in South Africa. After his side conceded the Tests at home Smith will be desperate to finish the summer on a high.Mitchell Johnson was responsible for both of the breaks to Smith’s hands and he will be keen to take the new ball and have a few more cracks at the South African captain before leaving the country. Australia’s star in the Test series, Johnson has much to offer with bat and ball in the shorter format as well.Team newsThe South Africans had been hopeful that Kallis would be fit but he didn’t quite come through in time for the first game, although Smith is a definite starter. Morne Morkel and Makhaya Ntini have been added after being rested for the Twenty20s, while Yusuf Abdulla, Robin Peterson, Justin Ontong and Johann Louw were the Twenty20 squad members to make way. South Africa couldn’t find a place for Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Roelof van der Merwe or Wayne Parnell in the starting line-up.South Africa 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Makhaya Ntini. For Australia, Shane Harwood and David Warner have both headed home after the Twenty20s while Marcus North and Ben Laughlin will be aiming to make their ODI debuts at some point through the series. It is strange that there was no place for Phillip Hughes in the limited-overs squad after his brilliant and aggressive arrival on the Test scene and instead Australia will likely rely on makeshift openers Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin.Australia squad Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Marcus North, James Hopes, Cameron White, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Brett Geeves, Nathan Bracken, Ben Laughlin.Pitch and conditionsKingsmead is famous for its pace and bounce and in the day-night conditions the so-called “green mamba” influence of the tides is said to help the bowlers. The forecast for Friday is warm and cloudy.Stats and TriviaShould Australia win the series they will regain the No. 1 ODI ranking from South AfricaAustralia have beaten South Africa four times in ODIs in Durban; South Africa have triumphed over Australia twiceQuotes”It’s always good to get the opportunity to bowl with the new ball to an opening batsman such as Graeme Smith who is such a great player.”
“Friday, for us, is huge. We want to go one-nil up, and hopefully take momentum from that. So, yes, nice to win the Pro20s, but it’s a different beast.”

West Brom fans hail Townsend performance

A number of West Brom supporters have hailed Conor Townsend’s display in the first half against Birmingham City.

The Baggies are back in Championship action in another Friday evening encounter, following the rather tedious international break which has taken place over the past fortnight.

Valerien Ismael’s side host Birmingham City in an all Midlands derby, with three points and of course plenty of bragging rights on offer at The Hawthorns.

A win for West Brom would take them top of the Championship going into the weekend, with Bournemouth returning to the summit if they win or draw away to Bristol City on Saturday afternoon.

Townsend was the standout man in the opening 45 minutes, forcing Matija Šarkić into a good save after a quarter of an hour, as well as registering a couple of crucial tackles.

Comandante do time no ano passado, Marcelo Oliveira estará à frente do Coxa e fará sua estreia no time.

– Meu trabalho é diário, focado no próximo jogo.

Rangers: Aribo stole the show vs Hearts

Rangers retained their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday.

The Gers took the lead through a stunning effort from John Lundstram, with the midfielder curling an exceptional effort from distance that Craig Gordon was unable to deal with. However, a last-minute equaliser from Craig Halkett after Allan McGregor fumbled a corner forced the two sides to share the spoils.

Steven Gerrard’s side now sit on 20 points in the Premiership after nine games, one point ahead of Hearts and four ahead of Celtic.

Whilst Lundstram scored the goal to put the Gers in front in the game, another player stole the show at Ibrox – Joe Aribo.

The ex-Charlton man was deployed out wide on the right instead of his usual midfield role, with Lundstram and Glen Kamara starting in a two-man set-up in the middle of the park. He adapted well to his change of position as he caught the eye with a terrific display on the wing, arguably stealing the applause from the ex-Sheffield United goalscorer.

On the ball, he was superb. Per SofaScore, he completed 100% of his four attempted dribbles. This shows that he was able to beat his full-back with ease and showcase his ability in possession as he utilised his skills to progress Rangers up the pitch.

He also created four chances for his teammates as he provided a creative outlet out wide for Gerrard, although he was ultimately let down by the finishing of others – with Alfredo Morelos attempted seven shots and failing to hit the target once.

Defensively, Aribo pulled his weight for Rangers. Per SofaScore, he won eight of his 14 duels on the pitch, including an impressive seven of his 11 ground battles. He also made one tackle and one interception as he proved that he can play out wide without being a lightweight who the rest of the side need to carry throughout the game, which Gerrard will surely be delighted with.

This demonstrates that Aribo was able to merge attacking flair with hard work and defensive diligence, which is why he stole the show on the day. It will now be interesting to see where he is selected to play against Brondby, in regards to whether Gerrard moves him back into midfield or keeps him closer to Morelos in attack.

LANCE! faz balanço do primeiro turno do Vasco no Brasileirão
