Dalrymple shuts door on Middlesex

The extra motivation of playing against his former team brings the best out of Jamie Dalrymple

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's25-Apr-2009ScorecardThe extra motivation of playing against his former team brings the best out of Jamie Dalrymple. His second hundred for Glamorgan was the second he’d scored against Middlesex since his departure, and it buried any thoughts the home side had of an afternoon run chase after the visitors’ middle-order wobble.Dalrymple, not wanting to give his old team-mates a chance of victory, eventually left them 369 in 44 overs, but may have wished he’d been a little more attacking when they slipped to 31 for 3 shortly after tea. The fear of what Phillip Hughes could do was probably a reason why he didn’t. In the end Middlesex survived comfortably enough as Hughes produced some powerful strokeplay to follow his hundred with an unbeaten 65, but they were the ones who’d started the day with serious thoughts of victory. When Danny Evans removed Mark Wallace the lead was 245 with 76 overs remaining. On a pitch still full of runs and a top order including Hughes, Middlesex were right in with a chance of a favourable pursuit, but Dalrymple’s determined century put paid to that. He reached his hundred off 184 balls to a gentle applause from some of the opposition.Middlesex’s early advances with halted by a stubborn effort from nightwatchman Adam Shantry before he edged a back-foot drive off Shaun Udal to slip. This was when the home side gave themselves a chance to press the issue as Evans produced his best spell of the match.First he trapped Tom Maynard for a duck, although it was another decision from umpire Steve Garratt that left a batsman far from amused. Evans didn’t care and still seemed to have plenty of pent up frustration remaining from the previous evening when he had been told to calm down by Ian Gould after some verbals to Dalrymple. The best way for a bowler to make his presence felt is with wickets and Evans struck another blow when he knocked back Mark Wallace’s off stump from round the wicket.Another quick blow and the victory chance was certainly on, but Dalrymple shut the door with a staunch innings. He kept the runs flowing, too, and was able to increase his strokeplay as Middlesex sensed their main chance had passed. Robert Croft, under pressure to justify his place, played an important role as well with a nuggety half-century. The pair added 124 for the eighth wicket to beat the Glamorgan record against Middlesex that was all of two days old, surpassing the 118 added by Wallace and David Harrison in the first innings.Croft’s dismissal brought the declaration and Harrison struck with the final ball before tea when he drew Billy Godleman into a loose drive outside off. Straight after the interval Neil Dexter was taken at second slip and when Shantry clipped Eoin Morgan’s off stump the game was entirely safe.Hughes, though, took advantage of some attacking fields to pepper the off side with his ridiculously strong cut shot to reach fifty off 53 balls. At one point Glamorgan tried to plug the game with two normal points and two in the deep, yet Hughes still threaded it to the boundary. If England’s bowlers want to know where not to bowl at him, get a DVD of this match and stick it on repeat.

Leeds United have a set-piece "problem"

Leeds Live’s Beren Cross has delivered his verdict on Leeds United’s set-piece “problem” under Marcelo Bielsa.

What’s the story?

While the Whites may not have conceded from a corner or free-kick at the weekend against Southampton, their defensive frailties from those situations were clear for all to see, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side going close a number of times.

And now, responding to a question from a fan about when Leeds’ struggles with set-pieces would finally get sorted out, Cross said: “Well, Bielsa’s been here three years and it’s a problem which still rears its head at times. Saturday certainly stood out for the wrong reasons. I’m amazed Southampton did not score in the first half from open play or from the danger they were creating at corners.

“We sound like broken records if we keep going on about it, but you’re right, it’s a problem which has never really gone away, though there have been some decent spells. The goal chalked off against Watford technically came from a set-piece too.”

Concern for Leeds

Last season saw Leeds finish rank-bottom in the entire Premier League for most goals conceded from a set-piece with 15, while they’ve conceded twice from those already this campaign.

As Cross says, it was quite incredible that Southampton didn’t actually manage to convert one of their many chances on goal from corners, such was the kind of chaos and confusion in the Leeds box.

Whether it’s a change in system, or a case of the personnel not being quite right, the Whites have had a long-standing problem under Bielsa when defending their own goal from set-pieces.

Given the kind of meticulous detail that Bielsa works towards, having something like set-pieces be an Achilles heel when you can be doing so much work on the training ground during the week, is certainly concerning.

With Wolves up next in the Premier League – a team currently seventh for most goals scored from set-pieces this season and tenth last year – that could once again be a defining issue.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered a worrying verdict on Rodrigo…

'Unbelievable' assault charges against Taibu thrown out

Tatenda Taibu has been acquitted of charges of assault on Zimbabwe Cricket’s general finance manager by the Harare Magistrates’ Courts

The case against Tatenda Taibu was thrown out by the Harare court•AFP

Former Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu has been acquitted of assaulting Esther Lupepe, Zimbabwe Cricket’s general finance manager, after Harare Magistrates’ Court found “glaring inconsistencies” in the prosecution’s evidence, describing it as discredited and unreliable.Taibu had been charged with assaulting Lupepe in an incident at a travel agents in Harare after he claimed that he was owed money by the board. He strenuously denied the accusations. But Tapiwa Godzi, the magistrate, said the court was still in doubt as to how the assault was alleged to have been perpetrated.”It’s either this case was fabricated or the testimony of the witnesses is grossly exaggerated to the extent of making it unbelievable,” Godzi said. “In the premises, the application for discharge at the close of the state’s case is hereby granted. The accused is accordingly found not guilty and acquitted. It would be futile to put the accused person to his defence.”The collapse of the case will be yet another embarrassment for Zimbabwe Cricket. Taibu had always maintained that Lupepe’s actions were part of a wider conspiracy by the board aimed at preventing him going public over its finances and treatment of players.Only last week an ICC report, referring to the poor relationship between board and players, mentioned the ongoing case. While the board has sought to distance itself from the trial, several sources close to it have told Cricinfo that there were glaring inconsistencies in the allegations and rumours have continued to do the rounds that Taibu’s counter-claims had merit.Taibu has had a fractious relationship with senior board officials since he walked out in 2005 after claims that senior officials had made open threats against his family. He subsequently returned, but following the accusations by Lupepe he has been openly at odds with ZC. He was only persuaded at the last minute to join the national squad when it headed to Canada for a quadrangular Twenty20 tournament last October, and missed recent matches after his kit was mislaid.

Ponting aims to set things right

There aren’t many gaps on Ricky Ponting’s cricket CV. But there is one glaring omission that he hopes will be rectified in the next few months

There aren’t many gaps on Ricky Ponting’s cricket CV. He has led Australia to two World Cup triumphs, is his country’s leading ODI run scorer and will soon take the Test mantle, and has captained his nation to series wins against every other Test side. But there is a glaring omission that he hopes will be rectified in the next few months.”There’s one thing on my cricketing resume that hasn’t been achieved yet, and that’s being captain of a winning Ashes series in England,” Ponting said at the announcement of Australia’s 16-man touring squad. “That’s something very dear to my heart, and something I’ll certainly be speaking to the players about when we arrive – making sure we get over that hurdle.”Ponting is one of six men in Australia’s squad who was also part of the group that lost the urn in England in 2005. It was a bitter blow to his captaincy reputation but four years on – and with a 5-0 Ashes whitewash to his name in the meantime – he insists he is not concerned that the result could be repeated.”We all realised last time what mistakes we made and we also realised how great a Test series that was to be a part of,” Ponting said. “Even though we lost, it was probably the greatest Test series I’ve played in. I don’t think there’ll be any hangover from 2005.”In 2005, we got off to a great start and then things slipped away from us from there. A lot of us have been there, and learned from our mistakes of last time and we’re keen to rectify that.”But while six of the squad were part of the previous tour, ten of the group are looking forward to their first away Ashes series. They range from the more experienced men like Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson, to the players who are still trying to establish their place in the side, such as Andrew McDonald and Ben Hilfenhaus. It’s hardly a squad with the same threat level of the 2005 group, which featured Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. However, Ponting was confident the selectors had given him the right mix of experience and youth after he led an even younger group to a 2-1 win in South Africa this year.”Going to South Africa, we went there with a less experienced team,” Ponting said. “The most pleasing thing for me through the South African tour was that when the tough moments came around a lot of our young guys really put their hands up and got the side home.”You don’t face many tougher tasks than playing South Africa over there. That really excites me about what we’ve got coming up on this Ashes tour.”Last time Australia visited England it was the opposition allrounder Andrew Flintoff who gave the tourists nightmares and ended up as the Player of the Series. Australia have been searching for a Test allrounder of their own in the years since then and the inclusion of Shane Watson in the squad, along with other versatile players like McDonald and Marcus North, has pleased Ponting.”Whenever you’re picking a team you’re looking for some flexibility, you’re looking at guys being able to play different roles at different times for you through the course of a game,” he said. “There’s no doubt through the last South African series it was a lot of those guys, allrounder types, that really did a good job for us.”But ultimately it will come down to the senior players – and Ponting is the most experienced of all – to ensure the errors of 2005 are not repeated. And if he can do that, the biggest hole in his glorious resume will be filled.

Hasenhuttl must unleash Adam Armstrong

Southampton will be aiming to maintain their three-game unbeaten run in all competitions when they travel to Vicarage Road this afternoon to take on Watford in the Premier League.

The Saints held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup in midweek before being beaten in the penalty shootout after Theo Walcott and Will Smallbone failed to hit the target with their efforts. Despite the team’s lack of fortune from 18 yards, Ralph Hasenhuttl will certainly have taken plenty of positives from the trip to the capital in midweek.

One of the major pluses will have been the performance of struggling striker Adam Armstrong. The £16.2m-rated ace arrived on the south coast over the summer as Danny Ings’ replacement, but so far he has been unable to replicate his predecessor’s form.

Just one goal in his first seven Premier League starts saw the 24-year-old drop to the bench against Leeds United, and he was consigned to watching on from the sidelines once again when Southampton took on Burnley last week.

Albania international Armando Broja shone in his stead, scoring the winner against Leeds before following it up with a crucial strike in the draw at St Mary’s when the Clarets came to visit. However, the 20-year-old loanee has now been ruled out of action with an ankle injury, handing Armstrong the ideal opportunity to reclaim a place in the starting XI.

The former England under-21 international was in devastating form for Blackburn Rovers prior to his move to the top flight, netting 44 Championship goals over the previous two seasons and earning praise from his former manager Tony Mowbray, and the diminutive forward will be desperate to get back to his best over the coming weeks.

“Adam does (make a difference) as he has done all season. I think Adam has matured and he’s only 23,” Mowbray said back in 2020.

“He’s a boy really, but his explosive pace at the top end of the pitch allows you to play both ways, to not be overly concerned if you’re pinned back around the edge of your box because one pass releases pressure to someone like (Harvey) Elliott to play the pass that he can hit just leaving it in the space for the speed and dynamic movement of Armstrong – it’s a devastating effect for the team.”

With Broja’s enforced absence giving Hasenhuttl a selection headache, the Austrian must be brave and reinstate Armstrong from the first whistle; he could just prove to be Southampton’s game-changer this afternoon.

Gold backs reports involving Conte

Taking to Twitter, reliable reporter Alasdair Gold has backed some news out of Tottenham Hotspur involving certain players and new manager Antonio Conte.

The Lowdown: Conte arrives…

After the dismal Nuno Espirito Santo era which ended after just four months, Tottenham have now officially commenced a brand new reign as serial winner Conte takes to the Lilywhites helm.

The four-time Serie A champion, Premier League winner and former Chelsea boss is set to usher in a new spell at the club as chairman Daniel Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici seek to bring success back to Spurs.

Over two years since they reached the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino, they have not been able to replicate that same form – going through a plethora of managers whilst attempting to rebuild.

The appointment of Conte could go a long way in this regard and his managerial star power has already seen Spurs become linked with a host of Serie A stars.

In terms of the mood around the Spurs camp, it is believed that players are excited by the prospect of working with the Italian – as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

The Latest: Gold backs reports involving Conte…

Taking to social media, backing Romano’s claim, reporter Gold insists that players in the Spurs squad, including superstar striker Harry Kane, are ‘really excited’ about Conte’s arrival.

“Not the most startling news you’ll ever hear but I understand Harry Kane, among others in the Spurs squad, is really excited about working with Antonio Conte and is impressed with the ambition of the appointment and what the future holds,” he explained on Twitter.

The Verdict: Exciting times…

Under both Nuno and Jose Mourinho, there has been a common theme of unhappy players at N17 so this news of Spurs player optimism could come as a welcome change and breath of fresh air.

If Conte is indeed going to get the very best out of Tottenham’s squad and guide them to a respectable finish this season, and maybe a Champions League qualification place, he will need the very best of his assets firing on all cylinders.

News of Kane’s excitement is particularly good news for Spurs’ new boss and supporters alike, especially considering his well-known desire to leave the club over last summer.

Last year’s Golden Boot winner and PFA Team of the Year member, who bagged 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League alone over 2020/2021, may well be rejuvenated by this new era at Spurs and there could be exciting times ahead.

In other news: Spurs now in very advanced talks to sign ‘extraordinary’ player, Conte personally involved…find out more here.
