Everton fans slam Townsend v Brentford

Many Everton fans have been slamming the performance of Andros Townsend in their game  at Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The former Crystal Palace winger’s match got off to the worst possible start as he gave away a penalty for a high boot in the first half, which was duly tucked away nicely by Ivan Toney.

Aside from that mistake, the 30-year-old was not able to make much of an impact from an attacking point of view, failing to record a single shot on goal, dribble or long ball. He also lost out on five of his duels, was inaccurate with seven of his crossing attempts, and lost possession of the ball 16 times in total (SofaScore).

After three goals in four games prior to the October international break, Townsend has now gone six league games without a goal for Everton (Transfermarkt), a real plummet in form since the early weeks of autumn.

Antiguan legend Sydney Walling dies

Sir Sydney Walling, the legendary Antiguan cricketer, died aged 102

Cricinfo staff11-Oct-2009Sir Sydney Walling, the legendary Antiguan cricketer, died on Thursday aged 102.An opening batsman with a reputation for nimble footwork, he made his debut in 1927, and despite making 156 in the trial match in Guyana in 1927-28 he missed out on selection for the tour of England the following summer, inter-island prejudices counting against him. In 1933-34 he became the first black cricketer to lead the Antigua team. He also captained the Leeward Islands and played in the first-ever Combined Islands team in the early 1950s.Some commentators argued that Walling would have been the fourth W, with the other great post-war West Indies batsmen – Frank Worrell, Clyde Walcott and Everton Weekes. His cricketing abilities did help him in other ways. His first job in the post office in 1922 came because of his skill as a batsman, and he rose through the ranks to become the country’s postmaster. In recognition of Walling’s cricketing achievements, a stand at the Antigua Recreation Ground and the highway leading to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, were named in his honour. He was a talented musician as well, playing the baritone horn in a local band. He was awarded a knighthood in 2004 for his services to Antigua.

Rangers fans slam Hagi vs Lyon

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have ben left slamming the display of Ianis Hagi in their game away at Lyon in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

The Romania international was largely an anonymous figure on the pitch, recording fewer touches (30) than his own goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin before being hauled off by Giovanni van Bronckhorst just after the hour mark for Juninho Bacuna (SofaScore).

Hagi failed to record a single shot on target, dribble, key pass, accurate cross or long ball in the entire match, and was also guilty of giving up possession seven times (SofaScore), in what was a frustrating evening individually for the midfield player.

It means that he is yet to score under the new manager, while he has only managed one assist (Transfermarkt), and will no doubt want to improve on his recent performances.

Andrew Strauss sure of Jonathan Trott's commitment

Andrew Strauss has said he is “100% happy with Jonathan Trott’s commitment” and was not concerned by Michael Vaughan’s allegations

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, has said he is “100% happy with Jonathan Trott’s commitment” and was not concerned by Michael Vaughan’s allegations that the batsman celebrated with South Africa after they beat England at Edgbaston in 2008.”He [Trott] said himself that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He knows a few of those players. I’ve spoken about it with him and he has a completely clear conscience on the matter,” Strauss said. “He said hi and well done to the guys – if I wasn’t playing in the Test I’d probably have said the same thing as well.”Trott had a spectacular debut this year, scoring a series-clinching century in the deciding Ashes Test at The Oval and Strauss said he was an “exciting prospect”. “To uproot your life and start all over again in another country is a big decision and I’m sure he’ll make the most of the opportunity of playing for England.”Strauss was speaking ahead of England’s departure for the two-and-a-half month tour of South Africa, a trip which includes Twenty20 internationals, ODIs and Tests. Strauss felt playing South Africa at home was “probably the hardest assignment there is. It’s harder than winning the Ashes at home. In pure cricketing terms this is as hard as it gets right now.”England’s 15-man squad includes four players with ties to South Africa. Wicketkeeper Matt Prior and Strauss himself were born in Johannesburg, while Trott and Kevin Pietersen moved to England after spending their formative years in South Africa. Pietersen had received a hostile reception from the South African crowd when he toured there five years ago and a similar welcome could lie in store for Trott. Strauss, however, insisted that it wouldn’t be a distraction to England’s goal.”In terms of trying to win the Test series, it won’t be a big issue but it might bubble away in the background,” Strauss said. “All I can say is the selectors sit down and pick the best 15 England qualified players. The fact some of them have been born out of these shores is of no consequence.”They’ve obviously had the determination, hunger and desire – possibly more than some people in county cricket. They deserve to be playing for England because of that. As captain I’m very happy that the 15 players I’ve got are 100% committed to performing for England and representing their country.”England begin their tour with a warm-up match against the Eagles on November 6 in Bloemfontein and have two more practice games ahead of the first Twenty20 international against South Africa in Johannesburg on November 13.

Estamos no final do campeonato, tenho de me manter focado no Corinthians.

West Ham eye Lingard move

As per reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, West Ham may now have some competition in a race to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: Lingard on the radar…

Reports over the last month have suggested that the 29-year-old could be on his way out of Old Trafford in January after a lack of chances under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

ESPN reported that talks over a new deal for Lingard stalled last month with the playmaker now weighing his winter window options and West Ham have been tipped as real frontrunners.

The England international himself even dropped a cryptic Instagram hint as to where he may end up, uploading a picture of himself on loan at the London Stadium last campaign in a teasing message.

Romano, however, sharing the latest on his future, claims the race to sign Lingard may just have turned up a notch as another competitors sets their sights.

The Latest: Romano makes Lingard claim…

Writing for The Guardian, Romano believes that Newcastle United and Eddie Howe are also ‘looking to sign’ Lingard, either temporarily or in a permanent move.

He backs that West Ham are also in the hunt to sign the Champions League man in January after an impressive stint over the second half of 2020/2021.

The Verdict: Pull out all the stops…

As manager David Moyes scours for more attacking options, with Lingard believed to be one of his targets (The Evening Standard), the Scotsman and recruitment chief Rob Newman simply must do everything possible to win the race.

Showcasing how perfect he is for West Ham already with nine goals and four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances for the Irons last season, Lingard’s numbers are matched only by his plaudits.

The Hammers’ own Declan Rice, for example, hailed the Three Lions ace as a ‘real gem’ and the player West Ham ‘needed’ during his spell at the club (Redknapp’s Big Night Out via The Evening Standard).

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell told Football Insider that Lingard is an ‘incredible player’ even amid his lack of game time in Manchester (Football Insider).

As West Ham fight on all fronts over what is, arguably, their most challenging top level campaign for years, the Red Devils outcast could find a new lease of life with a stunning return to the English capital next month.
