Everton have been linked with a move for Mallorca midfielder Iddrisu Baba ahead of the January transfer window as Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his engine room options.

What’s the story?

According to GhanaSoccerNet (as relayed by the Liverpool ECHO), the 25-year-old is a long-term target of Benitez’s after the Spanish tactician attempted to sign him for former club Real Madrid.

Since then, Baba has signed a new contract at the Son Moix stadium containing a €45m (£38.4m) release clause, a figure that the Toffees are ‘ready to trigger’.

The report also states that Atletico Madrid have identified the box-to-box dynamo as a replacement for his compatriot Thomas Partey, meaning Everton are set to have a fight on their hands if they want to secure his signature.

After rising through the ranks at boyhood club Mallorca, Baba has established himself as one of the standout midfielders in La Liga, making 109 appearances for Luis Garcia’s charges in all competitions.

However, he’s elevated his game to new heights in the current campaign and has been of the best players for Mallorca, according to Garcia.

After Baba scored the equalising goal against Cadiz while on league duties back in October, his manager lauded the Ghana international’s impressive exploits, claiming he is enjoying an ‘incredible season’.

“So far, Baba is being the best of the team,” said Garcia. “He is having an incredible season. He not only cuts balls, scores goals but also helps in attack.

“I have already told him that he has to continue working, but he has earned himself the essential role”.

And if the African makes the switch to Merseyside over the winter window, he could play a pivotal part in Benitez’s struggling Everton side for many years to come.

The likes of Tom Davies, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin have all struggled to make their mark in the middle of the pitch throughout 2021/22, heavily contributing to the Toffees’ poor form. For context, none of them have achieved an average match rating higher than 6.3, via WhoScored.

Baba, on the other hand, has been excelling. As per FBref.com, the 5 foot 10 gem has made a whopping 4.11 tackles per 90 this term, 1.71 interceptions and 1.55 blocks, while winning 2.40 aerial duels.

He’s remained remarkably durable over a 14-year career, performing consistently with bat and ball, and has no intention of giving up a format, or forgoing his bowling, to extend his career.”As I sit here at the moment, I’m still fit enough to keep going and I enjoy all three formats,” Kallis said. “I enjoy both batting and bowling. Certainly in Test cricket, if I spend a day in the field without bowling, it feels like it’s two days. For me to give up bowling would be tough, and I’ll only do that if my body tells me to. The day I wake up and it gets too much, [and] I’m not really enjoying it, I’ll stop.”Kallis has scored over 10,000 runs and has taken more than 200 wickets in both Tests and ODIs but his career, which has remained largely injury-free, has been the exception during a time when genuine allrounders are becoming a rarity. Celtic rounded off 2021 on a winning note with a 3-1 victory over St Johnstone on Sunday lunchtime in their final match before the rescheduled Premiership winning break.

The Hoops were two goals to the good by the midway point of the first half thanks to a brace from Liel Abada, and although Chris Kane halved the deficit on 69 minutes, a late strike from Nir Bitton made sure of the points for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Unsurprisingly given the final score, there were plenty of strong performers for the Hoops this afternoon. We’ve pored through the figures from statistical experts SofaScore to pick out the three men who were the most impressive in a green and white shirt.

Liel Abada (8.7)

No surprise that Abada leads the way after netting twice in the opening 22 minutes at McDiarmid Park, although there was more to his performance than just those two telling contributions.

The 20-year-old completed 16 of his 20 passes against the Saints and had 10 shots in total today, six of which were on target, while he also recorded two key passes. The Israeli youngster won three duels as well, rounding off a tremendous Boxing Day for him.

Nir Bitton (8.4)

Abada’s compatriot could also bask in an overall strong performance supplemented by finding the net.

The 30-year-old led the way for Celtic in terms of duels won, coming out on top in nine of the 13 that he contested. He also made two successful tackles and one clearance in an industrious display against St Johnstone.

The Israel international was effective on the ball, too. In addition his goal, he had five other shots and played three key passes, making plenty of impact in the final third, while recording no fewer than 61 successful passes overall.

Josip Juranovic (8.1)

He may have been playing in an unfamiliar midfield role, but the Croatian had little trouble in adapting to the position judging by the performance he gave today.

His tally of four successful tackles was the joint-highest in Postecoglou’s side, while he also won five of his seven duels and made one clearance.

The 26-year-old had some joy in possession, too, posting five key passes and delivering six crosses to a team-mate, illustrating that he may be well-suited to a midfield position.

Faltam cinco rodadas para o término do Campeonato Brasileiro e em meio das polêmicas fora de campo, o campo e bola ganha força neste momento na tentativa de o Cruz-Maltino se classificar para a Conmebol Libertadores de 2018.

O Vasco está na oitava colocação do Brasileiro antes do início da 34ª rodada da competição. Com 48 pontos, o time comandado por Zé Ricardo está a dois do Flamengo, sétimo e último time dentro do G7, zona de classificação para a competição internacional. Para o treinador cruz-maltino, até uma meta foi traçada: com mais dez pontos conquistados nos 15 a serem disputados, ele vê a vaga para São Januário.

Mohammad Yousuf has cranked up the tension with Pakistan’s selectioncommittee by questioning its refusal to allow Younis Khan tocome and bolster Pakistan’s Test squad in Australia. Yousuf and the on-tour team management had made repeated requests from as early as the first Test in Melbourne to send Younisover, because they were concerned over the flimsiness of their battingline.After much dithering the request was eventually turned down, with theselectors asking Younis to recapture some form in domestic cricketinstead. Yousuf, having already overseen a series of batting collapses through NewZealand and Australia, was particularly incensed after Pakistan stumbledto 94 for 4 at the end of the second day on a pristine surface at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.”He is a good player for the team and country,” Yousuf said. “You can askthe selectors about why they didn’t send him earlier. We don’t need tocheck him in first-class cricket. He has a 50 average and has beendoing it for 10 years. We have to see him here, not there. Will someonealso take my test [to prove my form] from now on?”Younis has been selected for Pakistan’s ODI squad and will be here for thefive-match series beginning on Friday.
