Celtic: Insider makes Ahmed Kendouci claim

Transfer insider Dean Jones believes that Celtic target Ahmed Kendouci is ‘pushing’ for a late move to Parkhead, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Kendouci links

The Hoops have already brought in five players this month and there could be more to come, with journalist Pete O’Rourke believing that the Hoops could be after another central midfielder before Monday’s deadline.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Kendouci, who was linked with a move to Celtic earlier this month, is primarily a central midfielder who can also play an attacking role or on the left. The 22-year-old has contributed to 31 goals in 81 appearances for ES Setif, and it seems as if he is keen on a move to Scotland.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Jones, who recently labelled Kendouci as a player with ‘huge potential’, was talking to GiveMeSport regarding the Algerian.

He believes the player is ‘pushing’ for a late transfer and urged the Hoops to get a deal over the line, saying:

“I think they should try stepping up their interest because they don’t want this window to end on a bad vibe.

“I believe he’s pushing and is quite keen on the transfer. If they can push forward with that, then I think that it would really give them the exact feeling they want within the camp going into the final stages of the season.”

The Verdict: Left-back instead?

Celtic are fairly well-stocked in the middle of the park following the arrivals of Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Matt O’Riley, so perhaps another midfield addition isn’t exactly pivotal at this moment in time.

However, should the Hoops send Adam Montgomery out on loan and find a new home for Boli Bolingoli, then perhaps signing a new left-back could be a smart idea.

Greg Taylor could end up being Postecoglou’s only recognised left-back for the second half of the season, so a late defensive acquisition could come in handy.

Awesome Australia outclass India

The match started with a maiden. Silence before a storm that absolutely blew India out of its way

The match started with a maiden. Silence before a storm that absolutely blew India out of its way. Six-hitting has seldom been made to look easier: David Warner and Shane Watson just kept clearing their front legs, creating room, and kept lofting the Indians over various parts of the Kensington Oval. Finding gaps and all they didn’t care about. Between them they hit 13 sixes and only three fours, and by the time they were done, 142 runs had been scored in 14 overs. Australia’s last four overs for 23 runs were silence before another storm: during which their awesome attack annihilated India, except for Rohit Sharma, the only one of eight batsmen to reach double figures. The same ample and true bounce that worked for Australia hurt India. That the ball came on, coupled with the short boundaries, gave Watson and Warner the confidence to go for their big hits. The Indian batsmen, though, with no option to duck or leave thanks to the huge chase, were almost always in bad position when playing the short deliveries. And they got plenty of them at a healthy pace. That Rohit was playing in the first place, an extra batsman keeping India’s attack down to two seamers, could be argued to be a defensive move even before the match started.Out of a spinner-dominated attack, Harbhajan Singh was a bowler apart: he bowled that initial maiden and went for just 15 in his four overs. By comparison, Ravindra Jadeja, who will want to delete May 7 from the 2010 calendar, went for 36 in six deliveries spread over two overs. That after he had dropped Watson when only on 7, and before he ran himself out by running away from the stumps. That Jadeja was brought to bowl a second over after being hit for three successive sixes exposed a rare tactical error from MS Dhoni: he had not left himself with a great choice of bowlers. The subdued start that Watson got off to against Harbhajan, though, would have given Dhoni false confidence. After facing seven consecutive dot balls first up, Watson just exploded, pulling Ashish Nehra way over long-on for six. The template had been set. Both the batsmen sat back, took their leading legs out of the way, and hardly hit anything off anywhere but the middle of the bat.Jadeja contributed to the onslaught, bowling short repeatedly, and Watson brutalised him over midwicket, cow corner and square leg. By the time Jadeja came back, in the 10th over, Australia had consolidated on the start, Zaheer Khan had looked ineffective, and Warner had warmed up, reaching 29 off 25 with Watson on 47 off 29. Three balls later, he came level with Watson, with sixes either side of a widish long-on and a huge one over midwicket. Both the barrels had started firing, and we were in for a contest as to who would hit more sixes.Watson, already ahead by one, hit Yusuf Pathan for another big one in the next over, but was bowled immediately after by a delivery that kept low. Warner showed no signs of slowing down, hitting Yusuf and Yuvraj Singh for three sixes in the next three overs before edging one that bounced extra.Yuvraj, Nehra and Zaheer, who bowled well at the death, kept India one short of the dubious record for most sixes in an innings, 17. Soon Rohit would find himself in a fight to avoid the biggest defeat in a Twenty20 international featuring two major sides.Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait were simply too quick for the top order. Limp shots, batsmen jumping to negotiate accurate bumpers, bottom hand coming off while playing them, lobbed catches inside the circle, a superb yorker and a bit of silly running thrown in, and India were 50 for 7. M Vijay got an edge trying to drag Nannes from outside off, Gautam Gambhir was hurried and had by a Nannes bouncer, Suresh Raina followed a top-edged six with another top edge off Tait that went nowhere and could even had hit his stumps had Michael Clarke not caught the skier.Rohit’s clean and assured hitting, 79 off 46 balls, not only delayed the defeat, it also made a case for his selection ahead of either Jadeja or Yusuf and kept the net run-rate damage down.

The ICC stands by its original decision to promote Nepal ahead of Singapore, despite the crowd trouble that helped the home team qualify•International Cricket Council

The ICC has published its report on the investigations into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket Division League Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur. It has found no evidence to support Singapore Cricket Association’s (SCA’s) claim that Nepal had earned a back-door entry into Division Four following a crowd disturbance, due to the technical committee’s revised target that helped them edge ahead of Singapore on net run-rate.The match was disrupted in the closing stages by the unruly home crowd, with USA set for a facile win that would have brought Nepal below Singapore in the league standings. As it transpired, the 45-minute delay caused by the crowd disturbance meant the target was revised significantly enough to lift Nepal’s net run-rate above Singapore’s by a slender margin, giving the home side a fortuitous entry into Division Four. The SCA demanded that ICC looked into the issue, specifically the decision of the technical committee that revised USA’s target from 163 off 50 overs, to 157 off 46.The inquiry, conducted by top ICC officials Dave Richardson, David Becker and Ravi Sawani, ruled against SCA’s claims today. However, it made recommendations that the proposed mandatory safety standards being introduced by the ICC security task force considers including sanctions against the home board when the home crowd interrupts a match, particularly when it benefits the home team. The investigation covered all aspects of the controversy including the net run-rate calculations, the reactions of the match officials and the nature of the security-related issues which arose during the match.Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, thanked the inquiry panel for their investigations and expressed his sympathy for Singapore, but said that promoting them retrospectively would set a bad precedent. “I am grateful to the inquiry panel for the thorough investigation conducted and it is reassuring to note that the correct processes and playing rules were applied by the event technical committee and match officials.”It is a most unfortunate outcome for Singapore and there was a suggestion that they should be promoted alongside USA and Nepal. While everyone agrees that this was a regrettable incident and one which we do not want to see repeated, there is no justifiable basis to promote Singapore and such temptation would create a dangerous precedent to the integrity of competition and the playing regulations,” Lorgat said. The Cricket Association of Nepal has already accepted a directive to not host further international cricket at the venue until remedial measures were carried out, including the reconstruction of the boundary wall that was damaged by stone-throwers looking for projectiles to hurl into the ground.

Liverpool: Phillips wanted by Bournemouth

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips is attracting Deadline Day interest from Bournemouth, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

The lowdown

With the January transfer window nearing its end, the Reds have yet to offload any senior players.

Phillips was heavily involved in 2020/21 amid an injury crisis, but he has only made three appearances for the first team this season, with his only start coming on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool had already qualified for the round of 16 as group winners before they faced AC Milan at San Siro in early December, enabling Jurgen Klopp to make changes.

The latest

Joyce tweeted shortly before midday on Monday that Bournemouth want to take the 24-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign, with the Cherries also taking an interest in another Liverpool defender.

He outlined: “Bournemouth are looking to sign Nat Phillips, the Liverpool centre-back, on loan for the rest of the season. Phillips will have regular football and Liverpool will receive a loan fee. Bournemouth are also interested in right-back Neco Williams.”

The verdict

It was reported earlier in the month that Liverpool were willing to let Phillips leave permanently if their £15m demands were met, but either the Englishman’s suitors don’t think he’s worth that much, or maybe they simply can’t afford to shell out that kind of sum. Indeed, Watford’s £7m offer may be the best that the Reds have received up to this point.

Phillips showed just how good he is with what called Klopp an ‘outstanding’ performance at the San Siro, where he locked horns with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He would be quite a coup for Championship side Bournemouth, where he will hopefully get the same volume of game-time that he enjoyed at Anfield in the early months of 2021.

Leeds injury update emerges pre-Everton

Leeds United’s injury crisis is showing signs of easing up but Marcelo Bielsa will still be without several key stars this afternoon, including Junior Firpo…

What’s the latest?

The Whites head to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Premier League later today and the Argentine has revealed that the first-choice left-back will not travel.

Speaking to reporters during his pre-game press conference on Friday morning, Bielsa said (via LeedsLive):

“[Kalvin] Phillips, [Liam] Cooper, Firpo and [Patrick] Bamford like in the game against Aston Villa won’t be considered for the game against Everton.”

On Firpo specifically, the 66-year-old added:

“He’s healthy but we’re not going to anticipate his return [against Everton]. He’s going to return next week.”

Big blow

Whilst it is encouraging to hear that the former Barcelona star is close to a return, it is certainly a gutting setback to not have him available for such a crucial game at the foot of the table.

Firpo is Leeds’ only senior left-back and in his absence, utility man Stuart Dallas has had to fill in instead but the side sorely misses his energetic presence in midfield – even more so with Phillips on the treatment table, too.

The 25-year-old had a tough start to the season but really started to evolve into a sturdy and reliable option.

A win over Burnley last month saw supporters hail his performance as his best of the season. He registered five tackles, three clearances and two dribbles during that game, as per WhoScored.

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has previously lauded Firpo as ” incredibly fit, quick and strong” and “really athletic” to Football Insider, which makes him an ideal fit for Bielsa and his system.

As such, the Argentinian head coach will be a little worried heading into kickoff as it means he will continue to have to put square pegs in round holes for the time being.

The Toffees will be desperate for a result and they could now target that area of the pitch this afternoon.

Graeme Smith wary of West Indies backlash

South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith was confident of his sides preparation ahead of the first Test against West Indies

Graeme Smith: “West Indies are that kind of team that if you give them a sniff they can hurt you”•AFP

South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith was confident of his side’s preparation ahead of the first Test against West Indies, despite the practice game against Trinidad and Tobago being marred by poor weather.”We got good batting in the warm-up game and we would have liked our bowlers to have at least 30 to 40 overs in the middle but that did not happen,” Smith told . “But the coaches are confident that the guys have done enough. The bowlers had a good work-out in the middle on Tuesday so I am pretty comfortable where we are in terms of preparation.”The visitors go into the series as favourites, following their sweeps of the Twenty20 and ODI legs of the tour. However, Smith is aware that his side had not played Tests in a long time, and was wary of a backlash from the hosts. So he is eager to make an impact in the first Test and carry the momentum through the rest of the series.”The first Test is crucial in the series. Mentally we must make sure we are ready for the type of Test cricket we are going to play. The West Indies have been away and re-grouped and have got a few new faces around them. They are that kind of team that if you give them a sniff they can hurt you. They will be very motivated to bounce back after the one-day series loss. From our perspective it is about re-focusing ourselves to make sure that we make the last 15 days on tour positive ones for us.”The first Test is the one that we really want to make count. It is the one with a lot of question marks about how our preparations are as we haven’t played Test cricket for a while. This is the one where we really want to put in a big peg and start well. We must control what we can control and that is to play our brand of cricket that has been successful for quite a long period of time,” Smith said.West Indies have not played Test cricket since the Australian summer where they were competitive despite losing the series 2-0. “Even though they lost their last Test series in Australia they came close in a couple of those matches and they have shown that they can be very, very competitive so we have to make sure that we are on the money,” Smith said.South Africa’s last Test assignment was the two-match series in India, which they tied one-all. Smith believes the conditions in the West Indies will be similar to what they encountered on the India tour. “The wicket is going to be pretty dry. Reverse swing is going to be a factor and there is going to be a bit of spin throughout the Test match. I think we can understand that we are going to be playing subcontinent style Test cricket rather than what one might encounter at the Wanderers.”
