Leeds: Conor McGilligan reacts to Raphinha news

Leeds producer Conor McGilligan has relayed news involving star man Raphinha ahead of the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday evening.

The Lowdown: Chelsea leading the race…

According to Football Transfers, Chelsea are leading Barcelona in the race to sign the Brazilian this summer.

Talks have already been held between those at Stamford Bridge and the representatives of Raphinha, who is thought to be open to a move to London.

The 25-year-old has a €75m (£62.4m) release clause in his Elland Road contract, however, should the Whites suffer relegation, that will drop to €25m (£20.8m).

The Latest: McGilligan’s post

McGilligan, who works for LeedsLive and runs One Leeds Fan Channel on YouTube, took to Twitter to react to Football Transfers’ update on Raphinha.

He spotted within the story that the winger doesn’t plan to pen new terms in Yorkshire as of now, relaying the news to his followers.

“No plans to sign a new deal, allegedly.”

The Verdict: Worrying few months

Raphinha has been Leeds’ best performer in the Premier League by some distance, as per WhoScored. He is joint-fourth in the Premier League’s top scorer’s charts, netting nine times with his latest strike coming on Sunday against Manchester United.

Hopefully, Raphinha will help steer Leeds clear of relegation over the coming months and pen a new deal at Elland Road in the summer.

However, should the worst happen in Yorkshire and Leeds go down, the club will more than likely end up losing their star man for £16m less than his current Transfermarkt valuation.

In other news, a former player has bemoaned an injury update regarding one Leeds player. Read more here.

Fantastic Foo gives Guyana title in thriller

Jonathan Foo, the 19 year-old lower-order discovery of Chinese descent exploded in sensational fashion as wickets clattered at the other end to steal a one-wicket victory for Guyana in the Caribbean T20 final

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar01-Aug-2010

It was a finish befitting a big final on a night when both teams displayed nerves befitting a big final. In the end, it came down to one man who held his nerve under pressure. Jonathan Foo, the 19-year-old Guyanese discovery of Chinese descent, exploded sensationally as wickets clattered at the other end to steal victory, and a berth in the Champions League, from Barbados’ grasp.Foo arrived with his side’s hopes all but dashed. The Bajan spinners, led by Ashley Nurse, had choked Guyana’s batting. Their last four batsmen needed 59 off the last five overs but Lennox Cush and Esuan Crandon fell in quick succession. Barbados were already celebrating when Foo marked his guard for one final onslaught: Nurse was lofted over long-off but the smiles were still on the Bajan faces. Dwayne Smith was worked for fours to third man and square leg in the 18th over, but surely Guyana could not pull this off from here? Not after they lost their ninth wicket, Nurse’s fifth, with 26 required off 11.Foo responded by launching Nurse for another huge six over long-off. Barbados’ smiles were replaced by frowns now. Then came the defining moment: Nurse delivered a low full toss on leg stump, Foo smashed it high in the direction of deep midwicket where Larry Babb readied himself to take the catch that would have given Barbados the title. It was not to be – he palmed it over the ropes. The force was with Foo and Barbados had just dropped the Caribbean T20.With 11 to get off the last over, Foo smashed Javon Searles through point for two fours, reminiscent of Lance Klusener’s boundaries in World Cup semi-final. Unlike at Edgbaston, though, Foo had not come this far to return disappointed. More importantly, he had for company a calm No 11. Foo tapped a single to mid-on, giving Devendra Bishoo strike with two required off two. Searles aimed a yorker at off stump and did not miss by much, Bishoo squeezed it out to cover for one, but Sulieman Benn fumbled a regulation stop to allow a second. Foo charged back to the non-striker’s end and threw his arms aloft. The Guyanese supporters invaded the field and surrounded their hero, while Ryan Hinds, the Barbados captain, was down on the ground holding his head in despair. The dramatic denouement to the chase of 135 was preceded by a sluggish and nervy start. Guyana’s approach was confusing. They did away with the experimental line-up, which worked wonders in the semi-final, and nearly paid the price for being too conservative. Travis Dowlin, who had batted with freedom in that game, played well within himself tonight against bowling that was at best steady. Searles sprayed wides down leg side and over the batsmen’s heads, but Benn was at the batsmen from the start. He trapped Dowlin in the fourth over with an arm ball for 8 off 17 balls. Sewnarine Chattergoon did not fare any better, pottering to 9 off 15 balls before falling in Hinds’ first over. Suddenly Guyana were staring at a required-rate in excess of eight in their last 12 overs – no cause for alarm by Twenty20 standards, but not in these conditions against a determined attack.Runs came in singles until the 12th over when Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine swung Hinds for a four and a six each. Things went awry in the next over though, as Nurse got Sarwan and Christopher Barnwell to hole out. When Hinds took out Deonarine in the 14th over, Guyana had lost half their side with less than half the target achieved. Hurricane Foo, though, was about to ravage Barbados. Both teams had disregarded the conditions at the start of the game: despite the possibility of showers Barbados chose to bat, and despite the bounce and movement on offer, Guyana used offspinner Cush with the new ball. Initially Cush’s lengths were poor and Dale Richards capitalised to kick-start Barbados’ innings. Esuan got sharp movement but repeatedly bowled inswingers down the leg side.In the third over, Cush got Richards to top-edge a full toss to short third man. That brought Jonathan Carter to the crease and just like that Esuan transformed from inconsistent to unplayable. Carter rarely got bat on ball and his early troubles against Esuan set the tone for his entire innings, though, to his credit he did not throw it away. Barnwell struck after the Powerplay with a smart change of pace, foxing Kirk Edwards into an early waft.Carter played and missed often and was guilty of not rotating the strike enough. His momentum was subdued further by a short ball from Barnwell that thudded into his box and had him in strife. Alcindo Holder tried to inject urgency by coming down the track. He picked a couple of boundaries but the ploy did not work against Bishoo, and Holder holed out to deep midwicket in the 15th over. Dwayne Smith also failed under pressure, slogging Bishoo straight to Foo at long on.Barbados desperately needed to finish on a high and they succeeded by stealing 33 runs off the last three overs. Three sixes were struck in that passage of play, including a monster blow from Carlo Morris that nearly landed in the commentary box and a last-ball six over midwicket by Carter. That was after Carter had reached 50 off 60 balls, getting a couple after heaving to cow corner where Foo put him down. Unfortunately for Barbados, it was to be Foo’s only error on the night.

Spurs can complete defence with Hermoso

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Mario Hermoso this summer, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Daily Mail claim that the north London outfit are tracking the Atletico Madrid centre-back ahead of the transfer window reopening at the end of the season, with RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Antonio Conte’s former Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni also being monitored.

Spurs are on the lookout, specifically, for a left-sided central defender and the five-time Spain international is amongst the targets.

Having joined in a £25m deal from Espanyol in July 2019, Hermoso now finds himself down the pecking order under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Back three complete?

Signing Hermoso could hand Conte a frightening backline heading into next season as the 26-year-old colossus could sit perfectly alongside Eric Dier and Cristian Romero.

Regarded as an impressive ball-playing defender, Hermoso has averaged a passing accuracy of at least 84% across the last two LaLiga seasons, as well as at least three long balls per outing too.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

He also ranks in the top 1% of his positional peers for passing into the penalty box (0.68 per 90) and top 14% for progressive passes (3.89 per 90), meaning the Atletico star likes to play forward, rather than sideways or backwards, as per FBRef.

The 6-foot centre-back is also adept in terms of defensive output, having averaged 3.5 clearances, 1.7 headers won, 1.2 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

Now valued at €40m (£33m) by CIES Football Observatory, the centre-back wouldn’t come cheap but his passing capabilities on the left foot clearly make him an appealing candidate to fill that final spot in Conte’s current defence.

Conte is currently depending on full-back Ben Davies to partner both Dier and Romero in his back three, so Hermoso – once dubbed an “absolute beast” at Espanyol by LRT journalist Aivaras Katutis – would be a very welcome addition indeed.

Just imagine the three thwarting many a Premier League attack next term.

A gente fica contente.

Warwickshire overcome Bailey ton

Warwickshire stayed on top of their Clydesdale Bank 40 group after trumping an 82-ball century by Scotland’s overseas player, George Bailey, at Edgbaston

30-Aug-2010
ScorecardWarwickshire stayed on top of their Clydesdale Bank 40 group after trumping an 82-ball century by Scotland’s overseas player, George Bailey, at Edgbaston. Bailey and Richie Berrington shared in a record-breaking partnership as the Scots made 267 for 4 but an explosive 81 from 69 balls by Neil Carter put the Bears on the way to a four-wicket win with three overs to spare. The county side had to overcome a teasing spell of three for 39 by left-arm spinner Ross Lyons before setting up a winner-takes-all clash with Nottinghamshire for a semi-final place on Saturday. Lyons broke a stand of 101 by Carter and Keith Barker (40), but despite slipping back to 156 for five, Warwickshire still had the resources to avoid an upset.Darren Maddy (74) and Rikki Clarke (49 not out) – both England players in the past – imposed their strength and experience by putting on 111 in 13 overs. Maddy was just annoyed with himself at getting out after bringing the scores level with his ninth boundary. It was tough on Scotland to be in the losing corner. Bailey and Berrington, already the only batsmen in this team to have made fifties in this season’s competition, passed numerous milestones in hammering 109 runs from the last eight overs.Their partnership of 198 in 25.2 overs is Scotland’s highest in competitive meetings with English counties, surpassing 167 by Rahul Dravid and the South African, Jon Kent, against Sussex at Hove in 2003.Making the most of a run-out chance on 73, Barker cracked nine fours and five sixes as he put the seal on a hectic year by making 123 from 90 balls, a new career-best score in List A cricket. The Tasmania captain flew home in the middle of the season to score a century when leading Australia A in a mini-series against Sri Lanka. For Berrington this has been a breakthrough season. The 23-year-old Greenock batsman has attracted interest from a number of counties since starting the with successive half-centuries against Leicestershire, Kent and Nottinghamshire. In the middle of the summer he reached his first international hundred against India A in Glasgow and now he has made his highest score against a county side. When he was out for 82, hoisting the last ball of the innings to Clarke at long-off, he had hit seven fours and two sixes from 72 deliveries. The wicket was scant consolation for Warwickshire as a team, but for Barker, the bowler, it was a personal landmark as he finished with four for 33, his best figures in List A competitions. In his first spell, the left-arm seamer ended a promising start by Fraser Watts (26) and Ollie Hairs, a 19-year-old left hander who confidently made 24 in his first CB 40 appearance.

Spurs "keeping tabs" on Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur are indeed “keeping tabs” on former midfielder Christian Eriksen ahead of a potential return to the club this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who delivered a recent – and exciting – claim to GIVEMESPORT about Spurs’ interest in their ex-playmaker with less than a few months until his six-month contract expires at Brentford.

The north Londoners have recently been linked with a move for the Denmark international, who has proven his fitness and quality back in the English top-flight following a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer.

And now, the reliable O’Rourke has provided some encouragement over a possible reunion at Hotspur Way. Eriksen left Spurs in January 2020 to join Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan outfit.

“They are keeping tabs on him,” he said.

“His return to the Premier League has been a real fairytale. It’s been a real brilliant story; it looks like he’s never been away after that horrific cardiac arrest he suffered in the Euros.

“He’s found his top form and has proven what a class player he is, and I’m sure if he’s unable to agree [to] a new deal at Brentford, there will be a lot of clubs in for him, not just Tottenham.”

Exciting news!

Eriksen has quickly emerged as a standout star for the Bees in the Premier League this season, earning the team’s highest average WhoScored rating at 7.41, which is clear of leading goalscorer Ivan Toney (7.29).

From only six appearances, in which five have been starts, the Danish maestro has delivered three direct goal contributions and also leads the way for chances created, averaging 1.7 key passes per game – a feat that would see him rank joint-second behind Heung-min Son in the current Spurs side.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Now valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Eriksen could plug a crucial gap for the Italian head coach after he hinted of his intentions to find a new no.10 to help support Harry Kane and co up top.

Over a six-and-a-half-season career in N17, the former Ajax gem delivered a whopping 69 goals and 90 assists from 305 appearances, averaging a direct contribution once every 152 minutes.

With the 30-year-old delivering a similar output in the same divison two years later, managing a goal or assist every 162 minutes for Brentford, it’s evident that he has not lost his creative spark whatsoever, even despite the devastating circumstances that he has been dealt with in the past year.

As such, a move for him on a free transfer this off-season could not only be really beneficial to Conte and the Spurs squad, but it would surely delight much of the Lilywhites’ faithful, many of whom were gutted to see him leave in the first place.

Gooch has faith in England's competitive spirit

England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, believes that the leadership partnership of Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower has instilled in the squad a competitive edge that has been lacking on previous tours of Australia

England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, believes that the leadership partnership of Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower has instilled in the squad a competitive edge that has been lacking on previous tours of Australia, but says that their hopes of mounting a successful defence of the Ashes for the first time in 24 years will hinge on the intensity of their preparation in the three warm-up games leading into the first Test at Brisbane on November 25.”The experience of taking on Australia is always fantastic feeling for an England player,” he told ESPNcricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “They have been the No. 1 side for most of the past decade, and they have a competitive spirit that some would say is unmatched by many other sides, although I do believe that England at the moment are approaching that sort of standard. The way they have been playing of late, they go with a lot of confidence, knowing the challenge ahead but relishing at the same time.”Gooch, 57, is embarking on his sixth tour of Australia, four of which came as a player between 1978-79 and 1994-95, and one as manager in 1998-99. In 1990-91, he led from the front as captain with 426 runs in four Tests including a century at Adelaide, but found that, despite forging a close bond with the coach of the time, Micky Stewart, he was unable to transfer his own formidable work ethic to the squad at large.Twenty years on from that trip, however, Gooch is confident that every man in the current England squad understands the levels of professionalism expected of them on such an arduous tour, and credits Strauss and Flower for cultivating the necessary attitude. “The two individuals have very astute cricket brains,” he said. “They are disciples of the game, they both love the game, and they are both well respected, and that’s a vital starting point for any relationship and any leadership scenario.”Both men are very fair with the players, very balanced, and they can both communicate with the players,” he added. “They know how to get the best out of each individual, and Flower in particular is very meticulous, and doesn’t leave anything to chance. Everyone in that team knows that England are only going to Australia for one reason. They are not going for the weather, they are not going for the hospitality, they are going to win the Ashes, and that will be the focus.”After an arduous season that was made all the more mentally draining by the match-fixing allegations that overshadowed the ODI series against Pakistan, the majority of England’s cricketers are currently enjoying a well-deserved break. However, with the squad set to depart for Perth on October 29, the down-time is fast coming to an end.”The players are in as good condition as they can be,” said Gooch. “The guys who play all forms only finished on September 22, so they need a few weeks off, because you can’t work every minute of the day. But in my experience of touring Australia as a player, coach and manager, you’ve got to get up to speed quick, and in past tours, we’ve started to play cricket after the first Test, if you see what I mean. You’ve got to hit it at the first Test because that sets the tone.”In terms of his day-to-day role as England’s batting coach, Gooch believes that the mental side of the job will be every bit as important as the technical. “For guys at this level, you’re not trying to reinvent their game, you just want to give them tips and good advice, and shape them in a slight direction,” he said. “I think it’s very important to keep talking to players about their game whether their confidence is low or whether they are playing really well, so that you can reinforce what it is they are doing well.”That said, there are few men in the English game who relish the hands-on nature of coaching quite like Gooch, who spent the latter stages of the 2009 season helping his Essex protégé, Alastair Cook, remodel his technique, and also spent a week at Lord’s this summer working one-on-one with Kevin Pietersen. In recent months, he has added a new weapon to his coaching armoury, a plastic throwing arm called the Sidearm, which has been developed by a local entrepreneur in Essex, and with which Gooch spent many a happy hour beasting his charges in the nets.”It’s a bit like a dog-ball thrower,” he explained. “It’s just like giving normal throwdowns, except it imparts more pace and is more realistic for a net session. People say it saves your arm, and that is one aspect, but because the ball comes out quicker, and swings as well, it gives the net session more intensity. In the past, England have practised using Merlin [the spin bowling machine] and all that, but those are not exactly easy to carry around.”Nothing, however, will be more important to England’s preparations than the three warm-up games at Perth, Adelaide and Hobart, the first of which gets underway at the WACA on November 5. “Middle practice is invaluable,” said Gooch. “The England team’s work ethic and attitude to preparation has been first-class since I’ve been involved, but you only get confidence from scoring runs and taking wickets, and as a batsman, you need to get your feet moving, and see the ball going between fielders.”You need to play solid defensive shots, and leave the ball well,” he added. “Your judgment needs to be good, and you need to hone that in the middle, because that’s where your confidence comes from. As a batsman you don’t lose your ability, what you lose sometimes is your confidence in that ability, and confidence plays a big part in life, not just cricket. Do you feel good about yourself, and are you in the right frame of mind?”Pietersen is one notable batsman whose confidence has been down in recent months, and his Ashes preparations began this week with the first of two first-class fixtures for the Durban-based Dolphins in South Africa. In general terms, however, Gooch is convinced that the batsmen who has been chosen for the Ashes are ready for the challenge, despite a Test series against Pakistan in which ball dominated bat to an often dramatic degree.”I have a great belief in the collective skills of this batting unit,” he said. “The English conditions this summer were conducive to fast bowling in particular, and there were some low-scoring games, which often produce exciting Test matches. It’s fair to say they’ll need to be at their best to beat Australia in their own conditions, but those conditions will be slightly different. There will be more bounce and carry, but the wickets themselves will be flatter, and you’ve got to get runs on the board to be competing in each Test.”

Estreia no Fluminense
