Cricket Ireland secure deal for new venue

Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin has secured a grant of €450,000 from the Irish government to become the country’s newest international-standard venue

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Oct-2010Malahide Cricket Club in Dublin has secured a grant of €450,000 from the Irish government to become the country’s newest international-standard venue, thanks to a deal brokered by Darragh O’Brien, the TD (Member of Parliament) for Dublin North. According to a press release, it is “conservatively estimated” that each major international game held at the ground in future will generate €1.5m for the economy.”I’m delighted to confirm that the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport Mary Hanafin has sanctioned a grant of €450,000 for the redevelopment of the cricket ground at Malahide Cricket Club,” saidDeputy O’Brien. “The funding will be used to extend the ground (playing pitch), making it the first international standard cricket ground in the Republic of Ireland with a capacity of 12,000. It will also be the only international ground for any sport in the North Dublin area.”While this is great news for cricket and recognition of its growing support, the economic benefits of this development cannot be underestimated,” he added. “€1.5 million will be generated for the economy for every major international game held at the new grounds. The impact of teams like Australia, England and Pakistan travelling here to play Ireland will be enormous for the tourism, transport and hospitality sectors.””Most people are aware of the continued success of the Irish cricket team – this commitment is an affirmation of the support by the Government for the sport and the hard work of the national team. I want to personally thank my colleague Mary Hanafin for her efforts in working to ensure cricket will benefit from this world-class facility.””Malahide was selected last year as the preferred venue for an international ground and I expect the work to begin very soon following this announcement. I want to thank the Fingal County Manager David O’Connor and his officials; Evelyn Harmon, the president of Malahide Cricket Club; Club Secretary Ann Bracken, Treasurer Norman Adams; the previous MCC president Justin Rogers who had a vision for this many years ago; and Ian Talbot the project manager deserves tremendous praise for his work on this important development.”Deputy O’Brien added: “Cricket is a fantastic sport which has huge growth potential. There is a very loyal following for cricket in the North Dublin area and many other communities around the country. I believe this will only grow and grow as people see the world-class facility we’re constructing here and the social and economic benefits that can come from this kind of investment.”Welcoming the announcement Cricket Ireland Chief Executive Warren Deutrom said: “Cricket Ireland is delighted with the announcement of funding for the development of Malahide CC into an international venue. It is a massive vote of confidence by the Government in our sport, and recognition of our increasing profile on the world stage, which we hope our performances in the World Cup in the New Year will only amplify.”It is entirely fitting that one of the true cricket heartlands in this country will play host in years to come to the great teams of the world, such as England and Australia, as Ireland builds on its success and its aspirations to challenge the world’s best.”

Deportivo Lara (VEN) e Independiente (ARG) completam o grupo.

SSN drop Rice update amid United interest

Reported Manchester United target Declan Rice is not for sale this summer, according to Sky Sports News.

The lowdown

The Telegraph’s Northern Football Correspondent James Ducker reported earlier this month that United would target West Ham midfielder Rice this summer, with incoming manager Erik ten Hag set to be given access to a transfer ‘war chest’.

Irons manager David Moyes said recently that the Englishman was worth £150million at a ‘minimum’.

That would be the biggest transfer in Premier League history, smashing the £105.75milllion record set by Jack Grealish’s move to Manchester City.

Rice is under contract until the summer of 2024, but West Ham crucially have the option to extend that deal by a further year. He’s believed to have turn down three offers of an extension, one of which was worth around £200,000 per week (via The Guardian).

The latest

Live on air on Friday evening, presenter Mike Wedderburn relayed an update on Rice.

While West Ham won’t countenance a sale this summer, their stance could change at the end of next season, he told Sky.

“Our chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol has spoken to West Ham today. West Ham have said this: they will not sell Declan Rice this summer, even if he doesn’t sign a new contract.

“The Hammers would be prepared to sell Rice in the summer of 2023 if he doesn’t sign a new contract.”

The verdict

This presents Man. United with an interesting dilemma. They can either bide their time for Rice, who will only be 24 years old come the 2023 window. If he’s their no. 1 target, they may be patient.

Or they may decide that they simply have to furnish Ten Hag with a marquee midfield addition this summer, particularly with Paul Pogba set to leave on a free transfer.

They’ve been linked with Rice’s England team-mate, Kalvin Phillips, who is available for a fee of £60million (according to The I’s Mark Douglas). This cheaper, swifter deal could prove to be more desirable.

Rangers: No new injury concerns v Celtic

Rangers came through their Europa League semi-final first leg clash on Thursday night with no fresh injury concerns, as confirmed by manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Gers’ crunch Glasgow derby clash today.

What’s the news?

The 47-year-old stated in his press conference on Friday that “it’s still too early to say” regarding who will play against the Light Blues’ local arch-rivals, but he outlined that there are no fresh injuries from the European clash in Germany.

This will give the manager a big lift, especially when it is a must-win tie for Rangers in the race for the Premiership title.

Good news for Rangers

Rangers face a tough assignment against Celtic at Parkhead, especially with a few big hitters out injured for the clash.

Alfredo Morelos was already ruled out for the rest of the season with injury, and both Kemar Roofe and Aaron Ramsey won’t be ready for another week as Van Bronckhorst aims to reshuffle his pack following a tight match in Germany on Thursday night.

With those absentees in mind, it will come as a boost to the Dutchman, and indeed to the Ibrox fan base, that he has no new injury concerns to report ahead of a potentially season-defining clash today.

There are still plenty of key players ready to go, with Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala expected to lead the frontline. They will need to be at their peak in order to get something off a relentless Celtic side, although the Gers defeated them in the Scottish Cup semi-final two weeks ago in extra time.

That could give the Light Blues a psychological edge going into what is, in no uncertain terms, a must-win clash for Van Bronckhorst and co.

There won’t be any extra time today, of course, so it is vital that Rangers get off to a strong start and pressurise Celtic from the off if they are to have any realistic chance of securing all three points. If they don’t, then they can say goodbye to the league title.

AND in other news, Van Bronckhorst can unearth his next Morelos by finally unleashing Rangers’ 19 y/o “big talent”

Cook has 'point to prove' against Australia

Alastair Cook, the England vice-captain who has a modest record against Australia, has said the experience gained since his first visit Down Under should help him do better on the current tour

Alastair Cook, the England vice-captain who has a modest record against Australia, has said the experience gained since his first visit Down Under will help him do better during the 2010-11 Ashes. Cook averages 26.21 in 10 Tests against Australia, and could manage only one significant score when England were blanked 5-0 in 2006-07, a second-innings 116 in Perth, but was confident of better returns this time.”The one side I haven’t played as well as against than the other sides has been Australia,” Cook told . “I have got that point to prove over the next three months. Last time [in Australia] I was obviously 21-years old; to come here as an opening batter, as a youngster, was a very tough learning curve. It was my first year in international cricket as well. So to have 50-odd more games under my belt, seen a lot more, I think that experience will help.”Cook, who will open with Strauss, was mindful of the importance of good starts to compete in Australia, something England struggled to do in recent visits. “Obviously Straussy and I have been at the top of the order for a while now, we’ve done reasonably well and there’s always the pressure as an opener to set the tone,” Cook said. “We’ve got that job, we’ve had that job for a while and we’ve done it well. It’s an area we appreciate we’ve got a lot of responsibility. Obviously as captain and vice-captain as well, we like to set the tone for the rest of the team.”Cook also backed his under-fire team-mate Kevin Pietersen to shrug off his indifferent form and be a force during the Ashes. Pietersen has struggled in the longer formats, and has not hit an international century in nearly two years. Despite his effectiveness in the 2010 World Twenty20, the England selectors dropped him from the limited-overs side against Pakistan, leading to a Twitter outburst that resulted in him being fined by the ECB.”He has obviously had a difficult 12 months with his form, but his work ethic over those 12 months has been the hardest I’ve seen him work at his game,” Cook said. “Talent like that and the stats he’s got behind him show what a great player he is. Great players might lose their form for a little bit, but they come back and a big series like this, I think it’s just about the right time to come back. I know he’s desperate to prove to people he’s still a great player.”Pietersen has been at the centre of most of the banter between the sides in the lead-up to the Ashes. John Buchanan said Pietersen could be a ‘major problem’ for England, to which he retaliated by calling the former Australia coach ‘a nobody’. Michael Clarke was wary of Pietersen’s ability to turn things on in big matches, while Andrew Strauss rubbished suggestions that he had a divisive influence on the squad. On Friday, Australia fast bowler Doug Bollinger talked about his plan to keep quiet while bowling to Pietersen since “I think that’s what he likes”.

Marsch can axe Firpo with U23 gem

Junior Firpo’s struggles in the Premier League continued last weekend after Leeds United were thrashed by defending champions Manchester City.

During the encounter, the former Spain U21 international was lambasted as being “woeful” by commentator Andy Townsend, and his defending was dubbed “schoolboy” by BBC pundit Paul Robinson.

The summer signing has endured a tricky start to life in England and it shows no sign of easing up, particularly against the very best the top flight has to offer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Back in July, the 6 foot left-back signed a four-year deal following his £12.8m move from Barcelona as a replacement for both Gjanni Alioski and Barry Douglas.

Whilst the former was often erratic, he was a far greater and more consistent option.

Leeds are sitting precariously above the drop zone right now, just two points ahead of Everton, who hold a game in hand, and with tricky matches against Arsenal and Chelsea to come, manager Jesse Marsch cannot afford to persist with the 25-year-old.

However, the American head coach has a lack of alternative options, even more so now after the “devastating” injury blow to Stuart Dallas.

However, there could be a viable alternative in Leo Hjelde, a young centre-back by trade but one equally capable of playing on the left. A recent appearance against Arsenal’s U23 setup saw him in the role. ‘Raided forward well down the left at times,’ claimed LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross.

The 18-year-old, capped by Norway at U21 level, made his senior debut for the Yorkshire giants earlier this season, starting at left-back against West Ham – a performance which earned rave reviews from club legend Jermaine Beckford.

He gushed: “The young boy, Hjelde when he came on as well, what a player he’s looking by the way. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. But that’s twice we’ve seen him, twice we’ve seen him against West Ham, against a very physical, very strong, very quick centre forward in Michail Antonio and a tricky player in Jarrod Bowen. I don’t want to say he had them in his pocket, but I think he did.”

Indeed, shutting out both Antonio and Bowen is no mean feat, and Hjelde could repeat such exploits against the Gunners’ mean attack, whether that’s Bukayo Saka or Emile Smith Rowe on the day.

During his time on loan to Ross County, his former manager John Hughes likened him to Virgil van Dijk and dubbed him a “massive talent”, claiming:

“Leo is going to be the next Van Dijk. Trust me on that. The quality he has shown, the physical challenge, playing real men’s football and standing up to it – it’s been a wonderful experience for Leo. He’s got massive things in front of him.”

If Marsch wants to change the team’s defensive fortunes against some of the big dogs, in this desperate time of need, then he really ought to unleash Hjelde.

He can finally axe the struggling Firpo by doing so, a decision which will surely benefit the side heading into the final few games of the campaign.
