India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been ruled out of the deciding third Test against New Zealand in Nagpur due to a groin strain. Left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat has been called in as his replacement. The injury resulted in Zaheer missing a good part of the fourth day of the second Test in Hyderabad, where he left the field during New Zealand’s second innings, and the bulk of the fifth day when he bowled just three overs. The decision to leave him out of the third Test is a precautionary measure.Zaheer’s absence was felt in Hyderabad as India struggled to make inroads and New Zealand, led by Brendon McCullum, steered the Test to a draw. Zaheer had triggered India’s fightback in the first innings after New Zealand had taken the first-day honours, and helped bowl the visitors out for 350. His injury means Ishant Sharma could be drafted in for the final game to partner Sreesanth, who picked up four wickets in the Hyderabad Test.Unadkat, who will take Zaheer’s place in the squad, represents Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy and has picked up 26 wickets in six first-class games at an average of 26.34

Na estreia de Diego Aguirre, ficou a impressão de que quem estava no banco era Dorival Júnior em seu pior momento no São Paulo. De nada adiantaram as soluções apontadas por André Jardine em seus dois jogos à frente do time interinamente. O técnico uruguaio quis testar Diego Souza, Nenê e Cueva juntos sob o seu comando, e o Tricolor pagou caro: levou 1 a 0 do São Caetano e precisa vencer por, ao menos, dois gols de diferença na terça, no Morumbi.

Diante do Red Bull, no domingo passado, Jardine já tinha mostrado que Diego Souza rende mais como meia chegando à área. Contra o CRB, na quarta-feira, ficou claro que Valdívia e Cueva precisam de uma alternativa de velocidade, que é exatamente Marcos Guilherme (Dorival usou essa opção em seus últimos jogos), e que Júnior Tavares pode ser um lateral que vira meio-campista, ajustando o setor, inclusive numericamente, tanto para marcar quanto para levar a equipe à frente. Mas tudo isso foi esquecido.

Aguirre fez questão de ver uma equipe que o são-paulino cansou de vaiar, inclusive nas vitórias, no início da temporada. Dorival mesmo já tinha concluído que esse renomado, mas pesado trio, prejudica. Só que o uruguaio não estava convencido, e não mexeu nem no intervalo. Enxergar Diego Souza confortavelmente sem ação entre os zagueiros adversários e Nenê como um previsível ponta direita canhoto, sempre puxando para a perna esquerda para cruzar, é algo que o novo técnico precisava ver de perto para crer que não funciona.

-Tentei colocá-los (Cueva, Diego Souza e Nenê juntos) para encontrar um futebol pelo meio. Sei que, talvez, não funcionou anteriormente, mas você também tem de transmitir confiança aos jogadores. Quero criar minhas próprias conclusões. Cada jogo é uma oportunidade, e os jogadores podem aproveitar ou não. Obviamente, não gostei do jogo, mas fiquei com algumas ideias e temos de trabalhar – disse Aguirre, após a partida.

Pintado, que trabalhou no São Paulo até julho, nem precisava conhecer tão bem o adversário para invalidar Júnior Tavares como alternativa na saída de bola, como Jardine indicou. Forçar as jogadas em cima do lateral com menor poder de marcação é uma das estratégias mais básicas e antigas do futebol, e, com isso, o São Caetano ainda anulou Valdívia, que precisava voltar o tempo todo para ajudar Júnior e perdia força ofensiva. Quando não recuou, Alex Reinaldo teve liberdade para cruzar, Jean falhou e Chiquinho fez o gol do jogo.

Além de não manter a evolução do time, Aguirre chegou a atrapalhar. Os raros minutos de luz do São Paulo no primeiro tempo ocorreram quando os jogadores se ajustaram, com Nenê centralizado e Cueva na direita, oferecendo a velocidade que o veterano camisa 7 já não tem mais. Porém, bastou a parada para hidratação e o técnico uruguaio resolveu recolocar Nenê aberto e aproximar Cueva de Diego Souza. Na prática, isolou o seu setor ofensivo e deu ao São Caetano dois terços do campo para atuar como quisesse.

Quando Marcos Guilherme entrou no lugar de Cueva, aos 15 minutos do segundo tempo, sua velocidade não seria mais tão decisiva. O São Caetano já vencia e ficava com quase o time inteiro da intermediária defensiva para trás, sem nenhuma vergonha de limitar-se a dar chutão sempre que tivesse a bola. Diante de um rival com criatividade quase nula, o Azulão de Pintado entendeu que bastava não dar espaço para garantir a vitória.

É legítimo e justo que Aguirre teste todas as opções que tem, até porque o São Paulo de 2018 está longe de apresentar qualquer solução definitiva. Mas insistir em erros tão recentes em uma partida decisiva pode colocar já no uruguaio uma pressão ainda maior, com uma vexatória eliminação nas quartas de final do Campeonato Paulista. Ao torcedor, resta esperar que o técnico tenha aprendido a lição para o jogo das 21h desta terça-feira, no Morumbi.

O lateral-direito valoriza as três semanas que considera de adaptação ao clube para, finalmente, estar à disposição para estrear nesta quarta-feira, contra o Atlético-PR, em Curitiba, no jogo de ida da quarta fase Copa do Brasil.

– Estes dias de adaptação foram importantes. Conheci melhor o clube, tive a oportunidade de aprender com o trabalho do Aguirre e observar melhor os meus novos companheiros. Tem sido muito produtivo, já conheço a característica de cada um e faço um balanço positivo deste período – comentou.

O jogador fez exames para assinar contrato até 30 de abril de 2019 em 8 de março, exatamente quando o Tricolor perdeu do Palmeiras no jogo que culminou na demissão do técnico Dorival Júnior. Mas Régis, que também atua como lateral-direito e no meio-campo, chega como aposta da diretoria para uma posição carente no elenco, já que Militão, embora receba elogios, é uma improvisação na lateral direita.

As credenciais de Régis no São Bento neste Paulista são a justificativa dos dirigentes para contratá-lo. Com 11 partidas no torneio, o jogador é um dos líderes do torneio em desarmes (22) e cruzamentos certos(18). Além disso, na primeira rodada do Paulista, diante do São Paulo, o lateraldesarmou Maicosuel e construiu toda a jogada do primeiro gol do São Bento na vitória por 2 a 0 do time sorocabano.

At Adelaide a fortnight ago, Australia were left to rue their lack of application on the final day of the third Test, when one of the heaviest deluges ever to hit South Australia swept across the city some three hours after the final wicket had fallen. England’s cricketers might have felt similar pangs of regret when they opened their curtains in Perth on Monday morning, where a steady drizzle greeted the dawning of the scheduled fifth day of the Test.All such musings were academic, however. England didn’t come close to taking this match the distance. They were routed by 267 runs with more than five-and-a-half sessions to spare, thanks to a brilliant spell of swing bowling from Mitchell Johnson, a devastatingly commanding 116 from Mike Hussey, and a series of English performances that appeared laced with fatigue after an intense campaign that is set to reach a crescendo in front of a near-capacity 90,000 MCG crowd on Boxing Day.It’s a scenario that Andy Flower, England’s coach, set out to treat with his customary phlegmatic attitude, even though he himself admitted his surprise at the size and the nature of England’s trouncing at the WACA. But the issue of battle-weariness is clearly one that needs to be carefully handled in the coming days, as England’s cricketers try to rouse themselves for the biggest challenge of their careers to date, at precisely the moment that – subconsciously at least – one or two might have envisaged an easing-off of the pressure with the Ashes already in the bag.”That’s just reality. We lost in three-and-a-half days; we can’t get away from it,” said Flower. “So we move on to use our time as wisely as possible. Today is an off-day for the players – they’ve been working hard throughout this tour – and we will use it as a rest day. It is a tough schedule, but international schedules around the world are tough these days. Everyone will get weary at some stage, but you’ve just got to deal with it.”With a travel day in prospect on Tuesday, and two further days of relative down-time anticipated in Melbourne before training resumes in earnest on Christmas Eve, England’s management clearly feel that a chance for some rest and reflection is the best way to rally the team ahead of the final two Tests. James Anderson has reported stiffness in his side since his exertions at Perth, which followed his 48 hours in the air for the birth of his daughter, while the series leading wicket-taker, Steven Finn, looked especially fatigued while going at five an over in the match.”A five-Test series is hard on everyone, both physically and emotionally, and for the fast bowlers more so,” said Flower. “I think Steven Finn has done really well. For a 21-year-old to come into an Ashes series in Australia, he’s handled himself superbly, and he’s taken a lot of wickets in three Test matches. I think we expect a lot of these young men, to come in and shoulder quite a lot of responsibility – and I think he’s done that really well.”Nevertheless, with Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad both demonstrating good rhythm in their two warm-up appearances at Hobart and Melbourne, the prospect of fresh legs in the seam attack is a distinct possibility for the fourth Test. Flower refused to get drawn on the specifics of selection so far out from the start of the match, but ruled out any prospect of Bresnan being chosen as a fifth bowler in place of the out-of-form Paul Collingwood, who has made 99 runs in his last nine Test innings.”We’ve got a few days now to reassess before Melbourne, and we’ll pick the 11 we think have the best chance of winning,” he said. “The workload on the bowlers is heavy, and in the absence of a quality allrounder, we are sticking with a four-bowler attack. We’ve shown over the last 18 months it’s served us well, so that’s what we’ll be doing. But of course, tactically, we will adjust for Melbourne. It’s a different set of circumstances.”An added burden for England’s pacemen at the WACA was the lack of control that Graeme Swann was able to exert. On a wicket that did not suit his style whatsoever, he bowled just nine overs for 51 in England’s second innings, as Hussey set out to dominate him from the word go. Flower, however, disagreed with the notion that Swann had been intimidated by a player who has now amassed 517 runs in five innings this series, and backed him to bounce back on friendlier surfaces at Melbourne and Sydney.”Without a doubt he can come back,” said Flower. “We’d have expected a guy of his quality to affect the momentum a little more, but once we got on that pitch we all noticed it was tricky facing the quicks. The bounce was aiding them, and there wasn’t much turn there for him, so it was a difficult task. That certainly affected the whole momentum of the game, but I don’t blame him for that at all, it was a tough ask. Melbourne is a different set of conditions, we don’t know exactly what they will be yet, we’ll find out when we arrive there in the next couple of days.””He got [Hussey] in the first innings of this Test, so I’d be surprised if Swann got intimidated by him,” added Flower. “He played him well, and he’s a good player of spin, but I wouldn’t agree with that statement. He’s used all of his experience in this Test series so far, and has played superbly – and we give him a lot of credit for that, of course. We have to look at the way we’re going to attack him, and will do that prior to this Test match.”We all know how quickly things can turn around,” added Flower. “We’ve just seen a very good example of it in a team sense between Adelaide and here. The same thing can happen with individuals. He’ll be trying his darnedest to keep that form going; we want to try to burst it.”Flower did concede that the prospect of a promotion in the batting order for Ian Bell, England’s classiest strokemaker in the series to date, is very much on the cards for Melbourne “We’re always looking at ways to improve our side,” he said. “Ian Bell looks in very good form, very confident – and has played beautifully throughout this tour. Jiggling with batting orders and personnel is always an option. You also have to be careful about altering a side that has been very successful over the last 18 months, but those options are always open.”The simple truth is that England will need to raise their game ten-fold if they are to re-establish their mastery on a series that all going totally to plan at the end of the Adelaide Test. “This was always going to be a fight, and it would have been naive to think otherwise,” said Flower. “Coming to Australia to win is a huge challenge – we knew that at the start. We played some very good cricket in the first two Tests, but didn’t here – and were outplayed. We’re back to evens.”Amid all the excitement about Australia’s revival came the suggestion that they had ramped up their aggression levels, both physically and verbally since the start of the series, particularly in the case of the previously off-colour Johnson. Flower, however, dismissed that suggestion. “I would expect any side to be aggressive in any Test match,” he said. “The bottom line is delivering skills, and we didn’t do that well enough in this Test. The way we will prepare for Melbourne is we expect the ball to swing – and we also expect us to play it better.”

Mas, embora seja o mais badalado da safra recém-promovida de Cotia, viu o uruguaio o deixar no banco para dar chances a concorrentes como o também garoto Caíque e Morato, que não atuava desde abril de 2017 por cirurgia no joelho direito.

Brenner tem 12 partidas na temporada, sendo oito como titular. A última vez que iniciou um jogo foi na derrota por 2 a 0 diante do Palmeiras, em 8 de março, no compromisso que gerou a demissão de Dorival Júnior. O camisa 30 não entra em campo desde a vitória por 3 a 0 sobre o CRB, em Alagoas, em 14 de março, quando saiu do banco com o técnico André Jardine como interino pela última vez, com Aguirre assistindo das tribunas do estádio.

Edimar
O lateral-esquerdo estava tratando de entorse no joelho direito quando Diego Aguirre foi contratado e voltou a ficar à disposição nos dois últimos jogos, permanecendo no banco em ambos. O lateral está atrás de Reinaldo na disputa pela titularidade na posição. Disputou oito partidas na temporada, saindo da reserva em duas delas.

Shaylon
O meia de 20 anos iniciou o ano prestigiado, como titular e com seu contrato renovado até janeiro de 2022. Mas perdeu espaço com a chegada de Nenê, ainda sob o comando de Dorival Júnior, e não atua desde o último jogo do ex-técnico, quando entrou no intervalo da derrota por 2 a 0 para o Palmeiras, em 8 de março. Shaylon disputou oito partidas na temporada e foi relacionado em todos os compromissos do time com Aguirre, mas sem jogar.

Anderson Martins
Aguirre, por enquanto, não tem responsabilidade nenhuma na ausência do zagueiro. Anderson Martins vem sofrendo com recorrentes dores na região dorsal e não atua desde o último jogo do time antes da estreia do técnico uruguaio, quando foi titular na vitória por 3 a 0 sobre o CRB, em Alagoas, em 14 de março. Recuperado, ele, que só atuou quatro vezes no ano, só voltou a treinar com o elenco nesse sábado e pode ser opção contra o Rosario Central, na quinta-feira, na Argentina, pela Copa Sul-Americana.

Aderllan
Como já vinha ocorrendo com Dorival Júnior, o zagueiro tem sido apenas uma opção na reserva com Diego Aguirre. O uruguaio só não o relacionou para o último jogo, contra o Atlético-PR, na quarta-feira. Emprestado pelo Valencia até dezembro, Aderllan, de 28 anos, só atuou duas vezes na temporada, sempre em partidas nas quais os titulares foram poupados – iniciou as vitórias sobre São Bento e Red Bull, pelo Campeonato Paulista.

Paulinho
O atacante de 19 anos foi promovido efetivamente para o elenco principal nesta temporada. Nunca foi titular e atuou só quatro vezes, ainda com Dorival Júnior, sendo a última na vitória por 2 a 0 sobre o CRB, no Morumbi, em 28 de fevereiro. Aguirre só o relacionou para os dois jogos contra o São Caetano, nas quartas de final do Paulista, deixando-o fora das três últimas listas. O São Bento já procurou o São Paulo para ter Paulinho por empréstimo na Série B.

Paulo Henrique
O meia-atacante de 20 anos, recém-promovido da base, só atuou duas vezes na temporada, ambas em janeiro – titular diante do São Bento, quando Dorival Júnior poupou titulares, e entrou durante a vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Madureira, em 31 de janeiro. Aguirra o relacionou apenas para o jogo de ida contra o Corinthians, pela semifinal do Paulista, no último dia 25. Paulo Henrique também está nos planos do São Bento, que o quer por empréstimo.

Lucas Perri
Exaltado pela qualidade que mostrou nas categorias de base, o terceiro goleiro, de 20 anos, ainda não estreou pelo time principal e só foi relacionado enquanto Sidão estava machucado, ficando no banco com Aguirre apenas na estreia do técnico, na derrota por 1 a 0 para o São Caetano, em 17 de março, no ABC.

Lucas Paes
Também com 20 anos de idade, é o quarto goleiro do elenco. Aguirre deve relacionar Lucas Paes somente quando duas das três opções à frente dele (Sidão, Jean e Lucas Perri) na posição forem desfalque.

Bissoli
O atacante de 20 anos foi titular na primeira rodada do Paulista, quando Dorival Júnior poupou seus principais jogadores diante do São Bento, e só atuou mais uma vez no ano, entrando durante a vitória sobre o Madureira, em 31 de janeiro. Recém-promovido ao elenco principal, Bissoli ainda não ficou nem no banco de reservas com Diego Aguirre.

Gonzalo Carneiro
Mais um caso em que Aguirre não tem nenhuma culpa. O atacante uruguaio Gonzalo Carneiro foi contratado do Defensor por US$ 800 mil (cerca de R$ 2,5 milhões) com o aval do técnico, mas ainda nem poderia ser utilizado, já que aguarda a a regularização de sua documentação. Além disso, está em fase final de recuperação da pubalgia que não o permitiu entrar em campo neste ano.

South Africa have a big correction to make. There are trends emerging from their contests with India that will bother them. In each of their previous three Test series against India, they have taken a 1-0 lead with innings wins, but have given it up in the next match. In their last three ODI series against India, they have given up the 1-0 lead twice, and have lost two of their last five matches against India by one run.India, though, are not letting the Wanderers win fool themselves. They know they need huge improvements. “Okay we have won the last game, but it was not like we played to our potential,” MS Dhoni said on the eve of the third match of the series that now stands at 1-1. “We are still playing below our potential. It is important to perform up to our potential in every department, batting, bowling and fielding. We are quite a bit worried about all those things rather than concentrating on the other side.”You need runs on the board, that’s one thing the bowlers can defend. But it’s not only the batting department. There are other areas too that we need to work on. Fielding is, of course, big. Whatever runs you save, whatever way you see it, it either mounts your total or gets deducted from the opposition total. If you can get one run-out per match, that can really change the course of the game. In the last two games, maybe we haven’t seen too much of death bowling, but that’s a very crucial aspect. There are quite a few areas we are working on.”India will try to capitalise on whatever mental edge they might have through that one-run win, but South Africa will believe this is a good time to regroup. Corrie van Zyl believes that the heartbreak at Wanderers on Saturday, where they needed 39 runs in 18 overs with six wickets in hand and still found a way to lose, can be turned around into a positive if taken in the right way.”I believe that you must turn around every bad experience and make it work positively for you,” van Zyl said. “That [Wanderers] is just one of them [experiences]. I know this team feels really bad and really hurt about the way we lost on Saturday, but you know what, if you work through that and you really analyse what has happened, it can only make you a stronger person and a stronger team.”In the absence of Jacques Kallis, South Africa had a fairly young middle order to see that chase through, and van Zyl believes that for their sake, it was good that happened in a comparatively lower-profile game than the bigger matches to come. “I think that rather it happened now and let’s go through that than later. I think one day when you have achieved something – I won’t say what – but when you have achieved something, you can look back and say, ‘Remember that day and how we felt on that day.
