Derwin Christian’s blistering 13-ball 40 sealed a thrilling win for Guyana•Randy Brooks/WindiesCricket.com

Derwin Christian made a whirlwind 40 to carry Guyana past Combined Campuses and Colleges by two wickets in what was a high-scoring game. CCC’s total of 175 was set up by a positive second-wicket partnership between William Perkins and Romel Currency, who made 43 apiece. Chadwick Walton then provided the closing flourish with two fours and two sixes in his 12-ball 26. Royston Crandon, who picked up two wickets with his off spin, was the only bowler among the six used by Guyana captain Ramnaresh Sarwan who went for less than six runs an over.In reply, Guyana’s chase started poorly as they lost Travis Dowlin in the third over. CCC’s bowlers struck at regular intervals and at 77 for 5 at the end of 10 overs, Guyana still needed 99 runs of 60 balls. Steven Jacobs and Jonathan Foo added a crucial 40 runs for the sixth wicket before legspinner Nkruma Bonner struck to dismiss both batsmen in the 16th over to swing the momentum in CCC’s favour. However No.9 Christian blasted two fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 13-ball innings to seal a thrilling win for Guyana in the final over with just two balls to spare. With this win, Guyana, who are the defending champions, moved to the top of the table in Group A.An allround bowling performance from Somerset carried them to a comfortable 17-run win over Windward Islands at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.Somerset won the toss and chose to bat but lost their openers Arul Suppiah and Nick Compton within the first seven overs. James Hildrith and Jos Buttler put on 40 runs for the third wicket to steady the innings. Buttler, who top-scored with 47, then combined with Craig Meschede to add 43 runs for the fourth wicket to take Somerset past the 100-run mark. Meschade and Alfonso Thomas hit some big shots as Somerset reached 139 for 4 off their 20 overs.Windward’s chase started poorly as Gemaal Hussain struck with his medium pace to remove Andre Fletcher and No. 3 Keddy Lesporis cheaply. Max Waller then picked up three crucial wickets with his leg-spin, including that of opener Johnson Charles, who top scored with 36, as Windward looked in deep trouble at 65 for 6. Liam Sebastien and Gary Mathurin added 37 for the seventh wicket but that only delayed the inevitable as Windward managed only 122 off their 20 overs to hand Somerset an easy victory.

Fit-again Yuvraj raring to go

Yuvraj Singh had a year to forget in 2010, with a loss of form and fitness costing him a place in the Test side, and briefly even his one-day spot. Hand fractures, a wrist injury, and a neck strain all contributed to his toughest year in international cricket, but Yuvraj has said he’s now “100% fit” and primed for his third World Cup.”I used to get thoughts like ‘Should I quit the game’ because I was getting injured all the time, and it was difficult to get back on the field and repeatedly getting injured,” Yuvraj said in Bangalore. “It was a tough phase, I’ve gone through it, definitely my body is feeling better and I’m feeling 100% fit at the right time, which is the World Cup.”This will be Yuvraj’s third World Cup, and he has been part of two contrasting campaigns – cruising to the final in 2003, and crashing out at the first hurdle in 2007. He was keen to erase memories of the debacle in the Caribbean four years ago, and focus on preparing for the challenge ahead. “We have definitely thought about the 2007 World Cup in West Indies and the reasons for not qualifying for the next round,” he said. “We are preparing well for the first game against Bangladesh, we are charged up and raring to go.”With India likely to go in with only four specialist bowlers, Yuvraj will have to chip in with his left-arm spin, something he has done regularly over the past couple of years. “I don’t think I am a specialist bowler. I just enjoy my bowling whatever situation I get, whatever results I get are great,” he said. “The day I start thinking I’m a specialist bowler, I’ll start getting hit.”Three of India’s frontline bowlers have been around for nearly a decade, and the team boasts of perhaps the strongest batting line-up in the competition, but Yuvraj pointed out one area where the side needed to improve. “We have a lot of experience in bowling and batting, if we field well in the World Cup it will definitely help.”

Murali will play even with discomfort – Bayliss

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss insists Muttiah Muralitharan will play in the World Cup final despite continued worries over his fitness

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2011Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss insists Muttiah Muralitharan will play in the World Cup final despite continued worries over his fitness. Muralitharan, who turns 39 next month, skipped practice on Thursday at the Wankhede stadium and has struggled with niggles through the course of the tournament, including a hamstring injury, a side strain, a troublesome knee and a groin issue. There was speculation that he would be rested for the semi-final against New Zealand in a bid to allow him time to be fully fit for the final, but he played despite not being in the best physical condition. The final will be Muralitharan’s last international game. “Chances are good that Murali will play,” said Bayliss. “He completed 10 overs in the semi-final, and such is the character of the man that he will play even with discomfort.”The fitness of allrounder Angelo Mathews is also a worry for Sri Lanka. Veteran seamer Chaminda Vaas and offspinner Suraj Randiv are being flown in as cover for the injured pair, but Bayliss confirmed Sri Lanka had not applied to the ICC to have them included as official replacements. “We have asked for them just to be on the safe side, but Muralitharan and Mathews will be given as long as possible to prove their fitness,” he said.Muttiah Muralitharan will play through the pain barrier in order to finish his international career with a World Cup final•Getty Images

Bayliss was bullish about Sri Lanka’s chances of winning a second World Cup title after their triumph in 1996, and suggested the pressure would be on India as the home team and tournament favourites. “We have played good cricket through the tournament and have done well against India in the past,” he said. “The pressure will be on India since they are playing at home, but we are familiar with the conditions in Mumbai.”If we concentrate on what we do the best then we can play some good cricket and if we play good cricket, we are going to be very difficult to beat. This match is 50-50 at this stage. Obviously, there will be a lot of pressure on India to perform at home. We have been able to do that in the last couple of games and come out with two good wins. The boys are quite confident about their chances in this World Cup.”Yes, we have played India on a number of occasions and have beaten them before on a lot of occasions. [But] it [the final] is a difficult assignment. In the last three years, we have played 35 matches and this will be the 36th one. We have beaten them on a number of occasions. Our guys are confident we can play well and win.”

Ashraful powers Bangladesh A to victory

Mohammad Ashraful shone with both ball and bat to lead his Bangladesh A side to a six-wicket victory against South Africa A at Buffalo Park in East London, in the first of five unofficial ODIs

Mohammad Ashraful shone with both ball and bat to lead his Bangladesh A side to a six-wicket victory against South Africa A at Buffalo Park in East London, in the first of five unofficial ODIs. Only 10 days ago South Africa had been battering Bangladesh in a four-day match, and in their home conditions were firm favourites to dominate the 50-over matches as well. However, the experienced Ashraful, who has alone played more one-day internationals than the entire South Africa A side combined, took 3 for 27 with his part-time spin to restrict South Africa to 226, and then scored an unbeaten century to help his side chase the target in 43.3 overs.Ashraful put South Africa in to bat, and after his frontline bowlers couldn’t get an early wicket, it fell to him to come on in the 10th over and dismiss his opposing captain Jacques Rudolph. Ashraful struck twice more in a seven-over spell, leaving South Africa reeling at 52 for 3. Things got worse for the hosts as Farhaan Behardien was bowled by left-arm spinner Elias Sunny, Vaughn van Jaarsveld was run out, and Heino Kuhn was caught trying to drive 19-year-old offspinner Nasir Hossain. At 73 for 6, South Africa looked like they would struggle to get 150.There was a recovery though; Dean Elgar, fresh from his 169 not out in the rain-affected second four-day game between the two sides, put together a 121-run partnership with allrounder Vernon Philander. The two batted until the 49th over, when Elgar fell for 76. Philander then hit three consecutive sixes off Farhad Reza in the same over, and South Africa took another 11 runs off the 50th to finish with a fighting total of 226 for 8. Philander finished 79 not out.The target started looking steep for Bangladesh when they found themselves 40 for 3 in the 12th over. Ashraful, coming in at No 5, was watchful early on, taking 28 balls before striking his first boundary. He had reached 21 off 44 before he suddenly exploded with Bangladesh at 84 for 3 in the 23rd over. Ashraful hit the next six balls he faced for boundaries, and Bangladesh seized control of the chase. Ashraful continued to attack in bursts, with Junaid Siddique rotating the strike at the other end.The two put together 149 before Siddique fell for 60, but by then the game was Bangladesh’s to lose. Ashraful reached his century soon after Siddique’s dismissal, and then ended the game with two consecutive boundaries in the 44th over, finishing 118 not out off 99 balls. It was a significant performance from a man who was once considered the future of Bangladesh cricket, but has now found himself relegated to the A team.
