Muchall and Blackwell punish Worcestershire

Centuries by Gordon Muchall and Ian Blackwell revitalised Durham on a protracted opening day in the County Championship meeting with Worcestershire at New Road

18-May-2011ScorecardCenturies by Gordon Muchall and Ian Blackwell revitalised Durham on a protracted opening day in the County Championship meeting with Worcestershire at New Road.A late start, two interruptions for rain and a sluggish over-rate stretched the proceedings beyond normal limits, and when time was finally called at 7.53pm, Durham had recovered to make 360 for 4.At one stage, with the ball seaming around just enough to make batting difficult, they were struggling at 44 for 3. However, Muchall’s resolute hundred – his first of the summer – gave them a base to work from.Anchoring the innings from the ninth over, he made 152 not out and Blackwell, with his more robust methods, closed with 130 to his name. Together they reshaped the contest in an ongoing partnership of 242, a new fifth-wicket record for the county. The match did not begin until midday because Worcestershire were involved in a day-night game against Middlesex at Lord’s on Tuesday. It was almost 1am when they got back home and yet they were quickest out of the blocks as Damien Wright and Alan Richardson added to their standing as the most successful new-ball pair in the championship.Late movement accounted for Michael Di Venuto and Will Smith in the space of seven balls, and with the openers both taken in the slips, Wright and Richardson reached 50 wickets between them in Division One.This represents a considerable achievement for two bowlers who are in their mid-30s and committed to a heavy workload for a side who have lost all five matches in the championship since winning promotion last September. It was symptomatic of their season that Durham were able to regroup after the confusion which led to a cheap dismissal for Ben Stokes. Muchall set off for a second run after playing the ball past cover, but Stokes turned back and was the one who had to go when the two batsmen arrived together at the striker’s end.The decision ultimately worked out in Durham’s favour as Muchall went past 50 before hitting a sticky patch in which he was dropped at slip off Richard Jones and then survived a run-out chance on 74.At 83 he completed 6,000 first-class career runs and, strangely, while some of his earlier fluency faded before he reached his hundred from 170 balls, his ratio of boundaries increased. Muchall’s half-century contained only five fours but he hit nine in his second 50.Dale Benkenstein (33) was first to support him, putting on 74 until he was caught at first slip off Gareth Andrew, and Blackwell carried on from there with 14 fours from 111 balls in his third century of the season. He gave one chance from a top edge off Andrew when he was on 77.

Phillips and Adams rescue Nottinghamshire

A record ninth-wicket partnership between Ben Phillips and Andre Adams rescued Nottinghamshire from the follow-on and should ensure the defending champions avoid defeat against Yorkshire

A record ninth-wicket partnership between Ben Phillips and Andre Adams rescued Nottinghamshire from the follow-on and should ensure the defending champions avoid defeat against Yorkshire. While half-centuries from Neil Edwards and Alex Hales had got Nottinghamshire off to a relatively good start, tail-enders Phillips and Adams still needed to add 94 to the home total of 291 for eight when they came together to make Yorkshire bat again. The pair promptly blasted 114 off just 16 overs to eclipse the previous club record against Yorkshire for the ninth wicket, which had stood since 1930, Adams caught for 54 off 47 balls after hitting seven fours and three sixes. Phillips finished unbeaten on 71 from 104 balls with eight fours and three more sixes as Nottinghamshire were eventually bowled out for 428, with Yorkshire 17 for none in their second innings at the close.Nottinghamshire began the day with a target of reaching 385 to avoid the follow-on, and in bright, sunny conditions opener Edwards looked in good touch as he rattled up his 50 from only 47 balls, with 10 smoothly-struck fours.Partner Mark Wagh was less confident and was bowled for 16 by Richard Pyrah’s second ball of the day – although the opening partnership of 88 was still Nottinghamshire’ highest since August 2008. Edwards was eventually undone for 64 as Pyrah’s sharply rising delivery was gloved to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, while Samit Patel edged his first ball just short of Adam Lyth at first slip.Boundaries remained plentiful as Yorkshire’s bowlers went at more than five an over, until Patel’s back-foot force off Pyrah was edged to second slip and Hales was forced to retire hurt on 28 after being hit on the jaw by an Ajmal Shahzad bouncer.Shahzad then had Adam Voges lbw on the stroke of lunch but the momentum swung again after the interval as Steven Mullaney and Chris Read put on 64 for the fifth wicket. Read was removed by a reflex catch from Joe Root at forward short leg off Adil Rashid, at which point Hales returned to continue his innings, passing 50 with a square drive for four. His dismissal for 59 came in brainless fashion, pulling a long hop from Rashid straight to deep square leg, and with Mullaney edging to slip for 49 and Paul Franks bowled by Root, Nottinghamshire looked deep in trouble.Phillips and Adams opted to free their arms and their attacking approach did the trick as Yorkshire proved helpless to stem the flow of runs until Adams’ skied Shahzad to Bairstow, with last man Luke Fletcher hitting three successive fours off the England seamer’s next over before he was caught at deep midwicket.

Mature Kohli makes all the right moves

Virat Kohli was always ambitious, but now he has added maturity to his game.

Sriram Veera in Port of Spain09-Jun-2011Virat Kohli comes to meet the press in a sleeveless shirt. An image of a Japanese samurai warrior with a sword raised screams out in a tattoo on his left shoulder. He looks relaxed; the musk he is wearing is called confidence. He was once brash but he was always ambitious. For a while he was living on the edge, struggling to come to terms with early fame, but his ambition has roped him in.It was during an inane tri-series in Bangladesh in January 2010 that he first showed signs of maturity in public. It made you sit up and notice then. These days he wears it lightly. The clarity of thought is striking. He seems to be at peace with himself. It’s no coincidence that his cricket too is flourishing.Today’s knock was yet another one from the stable of Kohli. He seemed always under control. The bowling wasn’t too testing, the pitch had eased up and he rarely let the opposition into the game. Later, he said the right things. These days he always says the right things with a smile. The confidence hits you. The once brash brat is now almost likeable. Times they are changing.”I was always determined to do well,” Kohli said. “Probably what I was doing off the field was not on at that time. I probably got carried away. Someone or other always tell you that this has been spoken about you at this place. I decided to change. I decided myself. No one can force myself to change. I had to do it. It was time to change.”I have been given a chance to play for India, which is not a small thing because you have 20 others with same talent are waiting for that kind of a chance. So why waste the opportunity given to me. I got the odd game here and there in 2009. I was a replacement player then. I was very determined to do well at each opportunity.”Virat Kohli was back to his old habit of anchoring chases•AFP

In the early days, the lack of consistent runs devalued the swagger that he always seemed to have. It made him look arrogant. Brash. Wild. Unlikeable. And even made you forget that he was just a young boy, learning to deal with things that not many at his age are forced to deal with. The bad press accumulated. The bad karma continued. Kohli was living in the headlines for the wrong reasons. A talent was on the verge of self-destruction. Then something happened.”It’s about realising that every opportunity is as important as the next one or previous one,” he said. “Not everyone gets an opportunity to play for India. It’s a big honour for me. I have realised that massively in the last one and half years. I want to give 100% and make use of every opportunity. Initially, in my ODI career, I have made rash mistakes with my rush of blood at important times. If you keep doing it, you are not going to get the opportunity. I enjoy my batting these days. Especially during a chase I know what I have to do, rotate the strike.”Questions about his attitude have dogged him for a while. Has he got bored now? “I think I have answered that too much,” he said with a smile. “But I have enjoyed answering that question every time. I feel good with myself for having changed what people did not like initially and then transform into that performances. I feel good about it but it’s not something I want to be too proud of and get relaxed. I don’t want to get complacent. The whole point in changing from that kind of attitude to this current attitude to perform consistently. I want to keep going.”It’s not going to be easy. It will take a constant vigil over oneself. The danger of relapse is going to be there. But Kohli continues to not only say but also do the right things. Sample this answer to a question about whether he strives to ape a Tendulkar or a Sehwag. In his own mind, he has translated that question to mean whether he is striving to be as famous as them.”It was never in my mind that I had to be at the level of them in fame or whatever. Those guys have been there, done that. It has taken a lot of time to reach where they are. There is no point in comparing oneself to them. Everyone has their own style of batting. I have realised that in the last one and half years. I admire them but there is no use batting like them. Take the first match of the World Cup. If I had tried to bat like Viru , I would have perhaps ended up scoring 40. They have a special ability that has made them legends of the game. There is no point in doing what is not my strength.”The answers were perfect. The cynics will say they were too perfect. His fans will say they come from a man who is in a hurry to mature. He won’t say it publicly but one gets the impression that he thinks he can become India’s captain one day. Kohli has always struck you more ambitious than a Rohit or even Raina for that matter. A scribe put it to him that he has a wonderful ability to talk and express, and asked if he works on that skill.”I don’t think I work on that ability (to express myself),” Kohli said. “It’s about being honest.”Does he think it’s a leadership quality?”I can’t say anything about it being (leadership quality). I am honest in whatever question is thrown at me at every press conference. I don’t really work on it.”Virat got up and left the room. Ambition floated in the air.

Nós matamos o jogo no primeiro tempo.

Australia Women edged home off the last ball to complete a nail-biting three-wicket win against India Women in Chesterfield. The victory was crafted on two fine all-round performances from Shelley Nitschke and Sarah Coyte, who helped Australia overcome a tenacious India side.Set 216 for victory, Australia were given an excellent platform from Nitschke who made 78 from 100 balls. All the top order contributed, though, with Meg Lanning adding 23 before she was run out, Leah Poulton 34 and Alex Blackwell 23.While coasting on 121 for 1 the game looked set to be an easy win for Australia, but four wickets fell for 47 runs to drag India back into contention. When Gouher Sultana had Lisa Sthalekar trapped in front for 6 Australia were 168 for 5 and wobbling. But a calm 11 from 22 balls from captain Jodie Fields steadied things, before Coyte helped Australia over the line with an unbeaten 17 from 19 balls. It meant no reward for India who would have been frustrated to end up all out for 215, having been 163 for 3 at one stage. Poonam Raut made a stodgy 60 from 106 balls, sharing a 75-run partnership with Mithali Raj, who made a brisk 49 from 61 deliveries. The only other sizeable contribution came from Harmanpreet Kaur, who made 31.Coyte and Nitschke took three wickets each, with fast-bowler Clea Smith also chipping in with 2 for 32 from her 10 overs.
