Duncan Fletcher, India’s head coach, will tour with India A for both of their unofficial four-day Tests in South Africa. The two matches are scheduled to be played in Rustenburg between August 17 and 20, and Pretoria between August 24 and 27. India A recently won a one-day tri-series also featuring A teams from Australia and South Africa.Cheteshwar Pujara, the India A captain, was optimistic about his side’s chances ahead of the two Tests. “Winning the ODI series has given us a confidence boost going into the four-day series,” Pujara said. “We played really well throughout that series, except for a couple of close games against Australia that we lost.”South Africa A had an indifferent ODI series, finishing bottom of the table with just one win in four matches. Their captain, Justin Ontong, said it was vital that his team regrouped and moved on.”We had a disappointing ODI series but in saying that I still think we played good cricket,” Ontong said. “It was particularly hard for the bowlers on those sort of decks, but I think we took a lot of lessons from that experience.”We are in a very good space as a unit,” he said. “Our four-day disciplines are where we want them to be. We are encountering new opposition, so it is a new challenge for us, and also a new opportunity for players to put in some noteworthy performances.”Both captains expect dry, bowler-friendly conditions, a change from the placid pitches at the LC de Villiers Oval in Pretoria that produced tall totals in the one-dayers. “If it turns, it will be helpful for us because we are used to playing in turning conditions,” Pujara said. “But let’s see how it will turn out. We know conditions in South Africa normally suit the fast bowlers. We will have a better idea of our playing XI once they have trained in the conditions.”Ontong, who is better acquainted with the local wickets, said, “We know this type of wicket is different from the HPC (Pretoria) wicket. As a batsman, you are never in. The seamers and spinners are always in the game. It’s going to be a huge challenge for the batsmen to construct their innings and put on big scores. Patience is going to be the key.”

Brutal Yuvraj hundred seals 77-run win

A sure-shot way of putting bums on seats for the relatively low-profile, non-international games played at capacity venues like the Chinnaswamy Stadium is the presence of big stars

A sure-shot way of putting bums on seats for the relatively low-profile, non-international games played at capacity venues like the Chinnaswamy Stadium is the presence of big stars. While India A’s Test squad has three of them featuring in two of the games, the limited-overs had one big drawcard – Yuvraj Singh. Without meaning any disrespect to the rest looking to make a mark, the attention among the media and the fans was on one man. It’s possible that what Yuvraj delivered on Sunday exceeded everyone’s expectations, probably including his own. Four months after his last competitive match, he bludgeoned 123 to power his side to 312 in a shortened game. West Indies A lacked the willpower to pose a serious threat and fell short by 77 runs in what was a rude initiation to their tour of India. That Yuvraj had the hunger to make a return to the Indian side since his last international match in January was evident with a rigorous six-month rehab programme he underwent with Zaheer Khan in a small town in France. If doubts still persisted, his A coach Lalchand Rajput allayed them. He was lighter by a few pounds, he assured, looking fitter than ever. While his fitness and attitude were in the right place, the question remained if one could say the same of his batting. The western stands at Chinnaswamy were not packed to capacity, but the numbers were encouraging despite the knowledge of a delayed start. During the two-hour delay, the decibel levels shot up each time Yuvraj appeared in his training gear, for throwdowns and then for the toss. The expectations surged, when India were inserted. As did the restlessness when the openers looked circumspect against a pacy spell by the West Indies seamers. The wait ended when Yuvraj walked in at the fall of the second wicket at 47 in the 12th over. Andre Russell greeted him with a bouncer straight up. No flashy opening statements. Yuvraj began with the intent of biding his time, waiting for the opportunity to find the boundary. He was languid between the wickets, jogging the odd single as if conserving energy for the long haul. Mandeep Singh’s positive energy at the other end would have relieved the pressure off Yuvraj. Off his 39th ball, Yuvraj struck the first of his 15 boundaries – a precise cut off Ronsford Beaton that beat backward point and the sweeper. Prior to that, he showed signs of breaking free, pulling short deliveries by the spinners but straight to the fielders. The first real sign of Yuvraj of the old came as a result of frustration. Hunched at the crease having failed to put away a free hit, Yuvraj took an off-stump guard. As Miguel Cummins approached the crease, Yuvraj covered the stumps and launched a full delivery over long-on. Timing, placement and power clicked in unison as Yuvraj unfurled a series of boundaries after his fifty, including pulls to deep midwicket and lofted drives over extra cover. A century seemed a very realistic possibility.Yuvraj’s first fifty came off 60 balls. He needed just 20 for his second. He capitalised on a weakness even the senior West Indies bowlers have been guilty of in recent months – death bowling. Ashley Nurse and Nikita Miller were torn apart by Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan who ransacked 125 for the fourth wicket in less than ten overs. Yuvraj began the assault with a slog off the left-arm spinner Miller sending the ball at least 20 rows back.Yuvraj moved from 67 to the 90s in one over off Miller with consummate ease, pulling the second ball over deep midwicket, skipping down the track and launching the third over the bowler, bludgeoning the next – a full toss – several rows over deep midwicket again before depositing the fifth over long-on.Yusuf bullied the offspinner Nurse in a similar manner after an over, smashing 28. As a fitting statement to the character of his innings, Yuvraj reached his century with a six – using Beaton’s pace to launch him over the sight screen. It was a muted celebration by his standards – a simple raise of the bat – a far cry from his roar at Ahmedabad during the 2011 World Cup though the pressure there was of an entirely different kind. The shot of the innings, though, was another straight six scooped off a yorker length. The follow through recoil of the bat, often associated with MS Dhoni, would have made a terrific still picture.Ironically, a full toss ended Yuvraj’s knock. He failed to get the distance over long-on, giving Beaton a simple catch many yards in front of the rope. Yuvraj walked back with a satisfied smile, congratulated by Kieran Powell, and faced the stands to his right that had cheered his every move.Narsingh Deonarine, speaking after the match, said the bowlers had plenty to learn from this experience. The seamers failed to get the yorkers in and the spinners failed to control Yuvraj and Yusuf.”We missed our key bowler [Andre] Russell to injury and we had to get someone to fill,” Deonarine said. “The part-time bowlers really felt the pain of Yuvraj and Yusuf’s batting. The variations by the bowlers wasn’t up to standard and nevertheless it was the first game on the tour and we have two more to play.”The chase, in contrast, was tepid. The West Indians were already spent after the hammering from Yuvraj and Yusuf and the lack of sizeable partnerships let them down. Deonarine was the only specialist batsman to convert his start to a half-century. The result was a foregone conclusion when they had lost their third wicket at 58.The one-sided nature of the contest, though, was the sore point. Still, it was a day well spent for loyal fans who witnessed a player look another challenge in the eye and conquer it.

Edwards bids for West Indies return

West Indies A captain Kirk Edwards aims to use the tour of India later this month to force his way back into contention for the senior team

West Indies A captain Kirk Edwards aims to use the tour of India later this month to force his way back into contention for the senior team.”There’s a job to be done [for the team]. I look forward to that,” Edwards said. “Personally, I know people harp on my Test stint against England last year but I think I had a good outing with some consistent scores. It was a bit disappointing but I’ve got over it and I’m looking forward to making some runs and moving back into the senior spotlight.”Edwards, 28, last played for West Indies in May 2012 and has since been searching for consistency in his batting. He seems a viable option in Tests with an average of 39.11 in nine matches but his ODI credentials – a top score of 40* at 19.12 – struggle to match up. His recent form is suspect as well, having played only one game for the Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League. However, the selectors have seen him as an A-team mainstay and continued to place faith in his leadership. With a mooted senior team trip to India before the visit to New Zealand, Edwards was determined to make the most out of this tour. “This is an opportunity to propel you into the senior team,” he said. “I need to keep getting scores to get back into Test cricket and I’ll be going about things in a professional manner, day-by-day. I’ve been on tour to India before and I’m familiar with the conditions, so this knowledge counts for a lot.”Edwards believes that his team has the right balance of youth and experience to enjoy a good outing in India. While happy to lead in the four-day matches, he was hopeful being relieved of limited-overs captaincy – with Kieran Powell taking over – will allow him to focus more on his own performances and present himself in better light to the West Indies selectors. His side completed a successful series against Sri Lanka A in June and Edwards was grateful that the selectors kept the majority of the nucleus intact. West Indies began those unofficial Tests in emphatic fashion, with three of their batsmen recording centuries in the same innings; Edwards, with 190, was the top-scorer. Besides two high-scoring draws, Edwards led his side to a 2-1 victory in the ODI series and secured the T20 series 1-0.”This unit we have here was formed for a while,” he said. “It’s positive to stay with this group, let players get comfortable and learn the game from and with each other. Experience counts for a lot and this continuity will help us.”The pitches and environment [in India] are different to the Caribbean. It’s different for spin and the new ball turns from ball one. Some outfields are quick and some pitches have a lack of bounce but we can – and will – capitalise on the good batting tracks. It’s a brilliant atmosphere because people love cricket in India, so I hope they come out for the games.”

Narine to join Cape Cobras

Sunil Narine, the West Indies offspinner, has signed with the South African franchise, Cape Cobras, for the domestic Twenty20 competition

Sunil Narine, the West Indies offspinner who is currently ranked the world’s No. 1 Twenty20 bowler, has signed with the South African franchise, Cape Cobras, for the domestic Twenty20 competition.Narine will be the frontline spinner in an outfit that will be packed with international stars including Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander and Rory Kleinveldt, and is no doubt part of their plans to qualify for next year’s CLT20. The Cobras last played in the lucrative event two years ago in 2011 and finished at the bottom of the points table last season. They aim to turn that around this season, by making use of as many high-profile players as possible “Most of our internationals should be available for the twenty-over competition and we asked ourselves the question, who would best complement them? ” Paul Adams, Cobras coach said. “Sunil’s strength is that you can bring him on to bowl at pressure moments in the innings and he still strikes and keeps the run rate down.”South Africa’s domestic twenty-over competition is scheduled to take place between January 8 and February 9. It is a window period in which the national players will be available, especially since their series against India is likely to be curtailed.India were due to play in South Africa until January 19 but have scheduled a trip to New Zealand which starts on that day. Australia’s series in South Africa only begins on February 12 which will ensure the national players can appear in what CSA have promised will be a much higher-profile domestic T20 competition, which they hope will include some big signings.Graham Onions has been contracted to the Dolphins for the summer and Narine has become the second international name to join a South African side. Narine shot to fame in the 2011 Champions League and has enjoyed big success in two IPL seasons that followed, including a Player-of-the-season performance in in 2012. He was also an integral part of West Indies’ World Twenty20 title victory last year, taking nine wickets and conceding only 5.63 runs an over.Narine is currently playing in the CLT20 in India for his native Trinidad & Tobago, who are awaiting their final group match against Chennai Super Kings on October 2, in order to ascertain whether or not they will progress through to the semi-finals. “I look forward to working with Paul Adams and the guys in the new year. South Africa has one of the toughest leagues in the world, so it will be a big test for me. The Cobras look to have a serious squad of players and hopefully I can contribute,” he said.
