Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, has called for green pitches when India tour New Zealand in January-February 2014. Hesson said New Zealand don’t get “any favours” in terms of pitches when they travel to India, and he would be “disappointed” if the curators do not dish out green seaming tracks for the two Tests in Auckland and Wellington.”We’ll back our seamers over anyone’s at the moment,” Hesson said, while emphasising New Zealand’s pitch preferences following a Test in Hamilton against West Indies where the surface was rather dry and spin-friendly. “We know these conditions as a batting group. Our batsmen bat on conditions that nip around in first-class cricket so they’re used to it and it can expose your technique if you’re not.”I think everyone’s aware of the type of surface that we’d like. We’ve been in India before and they’ve changed the pitch the day before a game because it wasn’t quite as dry as they would like. We certainly don’t get any favours when we travel, so I’d be disappointed if we provide any at home.”India play New Zealand in two Tests at Eden Park and Basin Reserve between February 6 and 18, following a five-match ODI series in January. On their last tour of New Zealand, in 2009, India won the three-Test series 1-0, registering victory in Hamilton with offspinner Harbhajan Singh taking a second-innings six-for. However, the previous time they visited New Zealand, in 2002, they were presented with tracks that were hardly distinguishable from the lush outfields in Wellington and Hamilton, and failed to score more than 161 in four innings. The Eden Park track, a drop-in pitch, generally offers good carry but isn’t a green seamer. Hesson said he was hopeful the ground’s new curator, Blair Christiansen, could deliver such a track though. “They’re a pretty skilful group up there, they know exactly what needs to be done,” he said.

Franchises unhappy with new retention rules

New IPL regulations, including the right-to-match card, have led to mutters from franchise officials that some teams stand to benefit more than others

The new player-retention rules released by the IPL have attracted an unfavourable response from some franchises, who are particularly displeased by the newly introduced “right-to-match” card. The right-to-match card allows IPL franchises to buy back a specific number of their own players after releasing them for auction by matching the highest bid they attract. The card was recommended by the IPL primarily to help franchises retain a bigger core group of players. Some franchises, however, privately argue that instead of facilitating franchises to retain their core group, the right-to-match rule was devised only to benefit certain teams that were keen to ensure they retained a majority of their best players.According to the IPL 2014 player regulations, every franchise is allowed to retain five players with a specific amount deducted from their auction purse of Rs 600 million ($9.67 million). Franchises can spend a maximum of Rs 390 million on retaining the five. Yet, the new rules state that irrespective of the negotiated amount between the franchise and the retained player, only the designated amount for each retained player (as per IPL regulations) will be listed on the books. This, some franchises argue, makes the idea of a salary cap redundant. The new rules ensure that every franchise can hold on to a maximum of six players with a combination of retentions and players re-signed using the right-to-match card. The rule, said one franchise official, was skewed to start with.”The rule has been tweaked to suit certain teams,” argued an official from another franchise. “The team which retains five gets rewarded with one more (card) whereas the team that does not retain anyone gets only three (cards). This team should be allowed at least one more right-to-match option if not two.”Franchise officials believe that, with the introduction of the right-to-match card, certain players, like the marquee names, might want to put their hats in the auction ring to raise their worth. Considering that retention is a two-way process and is futile without the player’s nod, franchises fear they might end up paying more for the same player in comparison to the previous season.”If I tell the player I will pay him $2 million to retain him, he will not accept and say I want $2.5 million. So if I retained him I would have paid him 125 million rupees. But still I have to pay him more (than the designated amount). So the sanctity of the purse is broken immediately. Now if the same player was picked in the auction at 150 million I would not have a problem,” a franchise official said. The right-to-match card was placed at the table during the IPL workshop in Singapore in November. The idea was to offset the original retention rule that was introduced in 2011. That rule allowed a franchise to retain a maximum of four capped players. Not all franchises subscribed to that rule. Some felt that they ended up spending more money buying players in the auction compared to rival franchises that paid half the sum to retain players. To give an example, Kolkata Knight Riders had spent $5.6 million to buy the trio of Gautam Gambhir, Yusuf Pathan and Jacques Kallis whereas Chennai Super Kings retained the quartet of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, M Vijay and Albie Morkel for $4.5 million.Consequently, some of the affected franchises even suggested in the Singapore workshop that the IPL bring all players into the auction. However, not all eight teams were on the same page. It is understood that one of the bigger franchises wanted a combination of five retained players and three right-to-match cards. Another franchise wanted the card option to retain the capped Indian players while another was interested in exercising that option to buy back uncapped players. This only re-opens the debate over whether the the IPL is a level-playing field as was claimed by Lalit Modi, the first chairman of the league. Smaller franchises argue that their bigger rivals have managed to flex their financial muscle and power to tweak the rules to suit their needs and buy the players they want.”With a salary cap now, at least you know a franchise is paying Rs 390 million if you retain five players,” another franchise official said. “In many ways it is a fair system regardless of the mischief you play in paying under the table. If there was no salary cap then the bigger franchises could have paid anything for any player and gone to the auction and bought more players at ridiculous costs. But today if I retain all five players I am left with just Rs 210 millon to buy the rest of the players to build a balanced squad. So the salary cap puts some sort of restriction.”According to this official the best thing to happen in this auction is that Indian domestic players will be part of the pool unlike in the past. Uncapped players till now were paid upto Rs 3 million, but franchises admit players were lured through various kickbacks. “Giving a BMW to an uncapped player would not help anymore,” the official said. Not everyone agreed. A franchise chief executive was less confident and felt the rules would continue to be bent. “The concept of a salary cap is being abused for the last five years and the trend will continue with the new set of rules. We don’t know how much the teams were paying the big names who had been retained in the last season. And it will be pretty similar this time around. The right-to-match card just adds to the woes as the players’ demands will keep on increasing and the teams will be on the back foot.”

West Indies hope new-look batting comes good

West Indies start the T20 series hoping an unproven batting lineup can fire against a New Zealand side smarting from defeat in the final ODI

Big PictureAfter doing well to level the ODI series with an injury-ravaged team, West Indies will look to end their tour on a high in their favourite format. The game in Auckland is the first of seven T20Is that West Indies will play over the two months leading up to their World T20 title defence. The absence of Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy will give their fringe players an opportunity to stake their claim for the tournament.New Zealand are smarting from defeat in the final ODI. James Neesham, the allrounder, suggested they may have been a touch complacent going into that game. It shouldn’t happen here, considering New Zealand only have these two matches in the format before the World T20, with the period in between seeing them play only 50-over and Test cricket against India. The selectors have chosen their strongest possible squad, and the team will look to target West Indies’ unproven batting lineup.Kieran Powell and Chadwick Walton are yet to make their T20 debuts for West Indies, Andre Fletcher returns to the side after two-and-a-half years and Narsingh Deonarine has an average of 11 from eight matches. With Johnson Charles and Lendl Simmons not boasting particularly stellar records in the format either, their captain Dwayne Bravo might once again come under a lot of pressure. It brought out his best in the ODI series, in which he scored more runs and took more wickets than any of his team-mates, but he will want others to step up as well. It won’t help him that Kirk Edwards, who scored a century in the final ODI, isn’t part of the T20 squad. Two of the four matches in the drawn ODI series featured T20-style hitting. In Queenstown, Corey Anderson and Jesse Ryder went berserk in a match reduced to 21 overs a side, while Edwards and Dwayne Bravo returned the favour in the final ODI in Hamilton. The short boundaries at Eden Park could produce similar scenes in the first of two T20Is, and will leave West Indies in a dilemma over how many spinners they play, although the drop-in pitch produced a low-scoring first ODI.Form guideNew Zealand (last five completed matches) LWWLW
West Indies LLWWWIn the spotlightKieran Powell has played 20 Tests and 24 ODIs for West Indies, but is yet to make his debut in T20 internationals. His 44-ball 73 in the final ODI in Hamilton has shown he is capable of playing T20-style innings. Powell will need to maintain that form if he is to retain his place after Chris Gayle’s return. It isn’t often that you score a 46-ball hundred in the second match of your comeback series from a career-threatening head injury and find yourself overshadowed by someone else. Jesse Ryder, however, will have appreciated the relative anonymity. With the World T20 around the corner, New Zealand will hope Ryder keeps his form going, considering the impact he can have at the top of the order in the shortest format.Team newsNew Zealand have named a 12-man squad, with Adam Milne and the allrounder James Neesham likely to fight it out for the fourth seamer’s spot.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Colin Munro, 7 Luke Ronchi, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Adam Milne/James Neesham, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Mitchell McClenaghanWest Indies will face a difficult call in the spin department, between legspinner Samuel Badree, who has an excellent T20 record, and left-armer Nikita Miller, who picked up a four-for in the final ODI. The presence of the seam-bowling allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell, however, might tempt them to play both Badree and Miller in a three-man spin attack with Sunil Narine.West Indies (probable) 1 Johnson Charles, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Narsingh Deonarine/Andre Fletcher, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 and 11 Samuel Badree/Ravi Rampaul/Tino BestStats and triviaOf the eight tied matches in T20I history, three have involved New Zealand and the West Indies, and two of them were played in Auckland.QuotesLast time we were here, [Darren] Sammy made them look rather inviting, so I think that the whole batting line-up will be eyeing up the straight boundaries here.
“We thought we maybe had the wood on the West Indies a little bit heading into that last game and possibly were a little bit underprepared for what they were going to bring at us. So I think just personal preparation before each game is the key.”

Descanso, recuperação e foco: a semana livre do Corinthians

SA call-up better than IPL contract – Hendricks

Beuran Hendricks, the Cobras seamer, has called his selection to South Africa’s Twenty20 squad as “better than an IPL contract.”

Beuran Hendricks, the Cobras left-arm seamer, has called his selection to South Africa’s Twenty20 squad as “better than an IPL contract.” Hendricks received his maiden call-up to the national side in that will play three matches against Australia next month and travel to the World T20 in Bangladesh and his excitement knew no bounds.”I have been dreaming of playing for South Africa since I was nine years old, it’s even more special because it’s a World Cup year and I will cherish this forever,” he said. It’s been a busy month for Hendricks, who also secured a deal with the Kings XI Punjab. But he said putting on the green and gold trumps that. “It’s even better than an IPL contract. I have been waiting for this since I started playing cricket.”Hendricks was picked on the back of an impressive domestic T20 campaign in which he claimed 28 scalps at an average of 10.28 to lead the wicket-taking charts. His hangman qualities were at their best at the death, an area South Africa have struggled in in the recent past.Having played in the South African set-up for the first time last year, Hendricks is surprised by how quickly he has risen. “Sometimes when I look back at the 28 wickets I got, I ask myself how on earth I managed to get there,” he said. “I think it was important to keep it simple and to keep calm.”But he has had guidance from a suitable source. Charl Langeveldt, who was also known for his ability to tie an end up and burgle wickets as a result, has helped Hendricks hone his trade. “I worked with Charl on my sills, adapting to pressure and sticking to the basics.”Hendricks also has the expertise of Vincent Barnes, former South Africa bowling coach and current High Performance Coach, to thank for his swift rise. “Vincent and Charl have been always been there for me. They have always tried to make sure I am on top of my game.”Hendricks will be the third left-arm seamer in South Africa’s T20 squad, joining Wayne Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
