A cloud of suspicion hung over the England team after umpire Marais Erasmus changed the ball due to “unnatural deterioration” during the West Indies innings in the third ODI.Erasmus, clearly suspecting that the wear to the ball was due to factors beyond those expected when it is used on an abrasive pitch or hit to the boundary, exchanged strong words with the England captain, Stuart Broad, in the 35th over but did not identify any specific culprit.The match referee, Andy Pycroft, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the ball had been changed on the basis of playing regulation 42.1.2 – which comes under ‘Fair and unfair play’ – and that, as captain, Broad had been issued with a first and final warning that any further occurrence in the series would result in a five-run penalty and the reporting of Broad, as captain, to the ICC. As the series has now ended, that threat of penalty has disappeared.While the England camp denied any warning had been issued, rule 42.1.2 b) states that, when the ball is changed in such circumstances: “The bowler’s end umpire shall issue the captain with a first and final warning.”The decision infuriated Broad. He insisted any wear had been caused simply by England bowling cross-seam deliveries and complained that the replacement ball was newer and harder than the original one, thereby proving easier for the batsmen to hit boundaries.”I’m very confused as to why it was changed,” Broad said afterwards. “And I made my confusion well known. It’s not like the ball was reversing for us and they gave us a ball that was [only] 10 overs old. You saw Denesh Ramden got hold of it much better. The softness of the original ball made it difficult to hit and they gave us a brand new ball that was easier to hit.”Yes, the umpire said the ball had been changed for that reason and, after I bowled three cross-seam deliveries with the new ball, the same wear was arriving on that ball. So I said ‘Take a picture of that ball as well’.”I just saw no logic to it at all and I made my feelings pretty clear, as politely as I could without risking too heavy a fine. The ball at the other end was in a worse nick than the one that was changed. I’m baffled by it.”I don’t think they’re suggesting we tampered with it. They are just saying it was unnatural wear which may just be that the wicket was ripping the ball up more than expected.”Ramdin, whose 128 carried West Indies to within sight of an unexpected victory, also confirmed that the newer ball had been “a bit harder and came off the bat a bit better”.It is not the first time in recent memory that England have had the ball changed. Most notably, umpire Aleem Dar changed the ball during the Champions Trophy defeat against Sri Lanka, although on that occasion there was no warning and no public mention of “unnatural deterioration”. But, despite a plethora of photographers and television cameras at all international fixtures, no evidence exists to suggest England have been guilty of ball tampering.

– O que mais quero é ser campeão. Mas precisa ter calma, equilíbrio, deixar as coisas fluírem naturalmente. As coisas vão se encaixando. Não é só um time jovem, é um time novo, com peças trazidas recentemente. O próprio treinador requer tempo para fazer essa engrenagem funcionar. Já funcionou, parou e tenho de fazer funcionar de volta. Mas não adianta tática, técnica. É aqui (aponta para a cabeça) e aqui (aponta para o coração). As duas coisas juntas.

In Northamptonshire’s first innings back in Division One, against one of the best attacks in the country and replying to an intimidating Durham total, they presented themselves well

The biggest test for sides promoted into Division One is finding enough runs. Without them, you cannot be competitive. Division One sees better pitches and longer batting line-ups. Teams take games deeper and for Northamptonshire to survive this season that is where they will have to match their rivals.But there is reason to be positive. They were very difficult to beat in 2013 and on several occasions launched lower-order fightbacks. They found runs from several sources – a few of them unable to begin this season – and in their first innings back in Division One, against one of the best attacks in the country and replying to an intimidating Durham total, they presented themselves well.The top three of Steven Peters, James Middlebrook – a makeshift opening bat – and Kyle Coetzer all got settled, with the former pair seeing off the new ball relatively untroubled. A very handy response to Durham’s 452 was put in place. There were plenty of boundaries and the scoring rate until the last hour was around four-an-over. They coped very well with a Championship-winning quartet of seamers but the top three all made the cardinal sin of getting out when well set. They ended the day in decent shape but Durham could have been put under more pressure.It would have perhaps said more about their prospects had Northants struggled on a docile wicket. They are set to have slightly flatter wickets than last year at Wantage Road and some confidence-boosting runs at home, and again proving hard to beat, will build their chances of survival a platform. They began the process here well but failed to screw in enough rivets to make their reply watertight.A key difference between the two levels of the County Championship is the more persistent bowling attacks. Durham, Sussex, Warwickshire, Middlesex – the leading candidates for the title – can all turn to high-class second- and third-change bowlers. Durham have two very capable options in left-armer Jamie Harrison and the bustling Usman Arshad – although he was expensive here – and it was Harrison who made the breakthrough after an opening stand of 66 in 16 overs.It was the first of three dismissals at dreadful times. The first two came in very similar fashion. Confident footwork had led to Peters, who averaged over 50 last season, and Middlebrook dealing with the early wobble of Graeme Onions and Chris Rushworth competently. But, after Middlebrook was missed at deep square leg – Keaton Jennings slipping on a practice wicket running in to take the catch – he failed to see out the over, being caught on the crease and edging to second slip. Harrison roared his relief.Peters did much the same after another half-century stand and also provided a catch to Scott Borthwick off Onions, who once again begins a season hoping for a return to Test cricket. An encouraging winter spent with England Lions in Sri Lanka gives him renewed hope that he can be part of England’s regeneration.Coetzer followed Peters past fifty but drove loosely at Harrison and edged behind. Much like Durham at the close on day one, Northants may feel their top order have not done enough with Rob Newton playing with a broken thumb on his right hand and David Willey not fully fit.Northants will hope to follow Durham’s example. Fears that they had sold themselves short were eased by a whistling morning session where they added 139 runs at almost four-and-a-half an over.They motored along, adding 55 runs in the opening 50 minutes before losing Phil Mustard nine short of his first century for Durham since May 2011. Having driven and missed several times, he went to leave Steven Crook’s next over and was given out caught behind, the ball brushing the glove on the way through to David Murphy. Mustard’s wicket ended a record sixth-wicket stand for Durham against Northants of 96 and helped them collect a third batting point.Having survived the best part of the first hour, Durham were positively engaged in the day and Harrison fed off the progress to make his maiden first-class fifty, brought up after lunch in 53 balls. It included a delightful lift for six over square leg off Azharullah who was also taken over long-on for six more when Harrison had past fifty. Next ball he drove classily through mid-off for four more in helping add 65 for the ninth wicket. The lower order had pushed Durham to an excellent score. Good sides find a way to do that.

Sammy, though, wasn’t concerned about where it went or landed, though. He took off well before the ball had thudded back into the ground, took off towards his onrushing teammates, who were about to put together one of the most memorable and spontaneous celebrations seen on a cricket field.Sammy had flung away his bat moments after turning towards the dressing-room, and Dwayne Bravo followed suit. Bravo had thrown it so high the spidercam was threatened, and since James Faulkner was still sulking somewhere in the vicinity of the pitch, it could have fallen on him.By this time, Chris Gayle was still making his way past his teammates. He tackled Sammy and started to dance the Gangnam. Having treated the crowd to three Gangnams, he spotted a camera and made a gesture that said everything: too much talk man. The crowd lapped it up and there were howls of laughter in the press box as everyone kept their eyes fixed on the TV screens.Gayle had led the Gangnam dance when West Indies had won the World T20 two years ago, but this was different. He had never looked as worked up as he did now. Before the game, Faulkner had said he didn’t “particularly like” the West Indies players. It was quite prophetic George Bailey had given Faulkner the ball when West Indies needed 12 to win off the last over.”Like I said in the pre-match press conference, talk is cheap,” Sammy said, moments after the reporters at the press conference had given him a surprise ovation. “Cricket is a game of action. You can talk all you want but it is the action that matters. West Indies acted today. It feels very good to bring it home. We fought for it. Faulkner will not like us anymore.”The DJ was playing Gangnam Style. Chris is the leader of our dance group. We are just happy. We play with flair and passion. It was not pre-planned, it just comes out with the celebrations. It feels good to beat the Australians.”That Faulkner had got under the West Indies players’ skin was evident from the start of the game. When Glenn Maxwell and Faulkner were caught in the boundary by Bravo, the send-offs had an extra edge to them. Maxwell was shocked by Samuel Badree’s reaction to dismissing him, and he gave some of it back during the West Indies innings when he caught Gayle on the boundary. With the bat in hand, Gayle had started aggressively against Mitchell Starc. Sammy had even celebrated after hitting his first six.So on to the final over with Bailey handing the ball to Faulkner, who had conceded only 15 runs in his first three overs. The sight of Faulkner invigorated Sammy. He knew what he needed.”I didn’t care who was bowling,” Sammy said. “We had to get 12 runs. But you feel better when it is the guy who was talking a lot before the game. He bowled some good yorkers but I stayed low and got under the ball.”It is just a good feeling, it was a crucial match for both teams. We handled pressure better than them.We needed two big hits and we back ourselves as a six and four-hitting team. Two sixes in the end there was what we needed.”

CAMPEÃO EM 2018, PALMEIRAS TINHA SITUAÇÃO MAIS DIFÍCIL

Com 80 pontos, o Palmeiras conquistou o Brasileirão de 2018 sem sustos na reta final. Contudo, para alcançar a primeira posição, o time de Luiz Felipe Scolari tirou uma vantagem de oito pontos existente para o líder quando o campeonato foi paralisado para a disputa do Mundial. Após 12 rodadas, o Fla era o primeiro lugar com 27 pontos, enquanto o Palmeiras era o sexto, com 19.

O Flamengo chegou aos 17 pontos após vencer o CSA na quarta-feira. O líder Palmeiras, por sua vez, tem 22 pontos, mas pode ir aos 25 caso a vitória sobre o Botafogo seja homologada. O caso está com o STJD.De qualquer maneira, a distância que o Rubro-Negro precisa tirar não é maior do que a superada pelo Verdão em 2018 – e ainda há mais rodadas a serem disputadas neste ano.

JORGE JESUS NO COMANDO E COM TEMPO PARA TRABALHAR

Quando o elenco do Flamengo reapresentar-se no Ninho do Urubu, no dia 20, Jorge Jesus dará início ao trabalho no clube ao lado de sua comissão técnica. O português, grande aposta da diretoria para o segundo semestre, terá cerca de 20 dias para apresentar suas ideias aos jogadores antes de fazer sua estreia.

O treinador de 64 anos já disse que não veio ao Fla “fazer uma revolução”, mas apresentará suas ideias ao elenco e pretende ter, por exemplo, um time mais intensa em campo, especialmente no momento em que não está com a bola.

ELENCO AINDA MAIS REFORÇADO

No início do ano, a diretoria rubro-negra foi ao mercado e reforçou o elenco com Rodrigo Caio, Arrascaeta, Bruno Henrique e Rodrigo Caio. Para o segundo semestre, o clube da Gávea já anunciou a chegada do lateral-direito Rafinha, ex-Bayern de Munique, da Alemanha, e com passagens pela Seleção Brasileira.

As novidades, contudo, não devem parar por aí. Com a anuência de Jorge Jesus, treinador que chega para o segundo semestre, a direção está no mercado atrás de reforços. A busca é por mais um volante e um atacante de área, ao menos.

A NAÇÃO FAZ A DIFERENÇA!

Com a Nação ao seu lado, o Flamengo torna-se mais forte e, em 2019, o clube da Gávea tem a melhor média de público do Brasil com sobras. Nos 17 jogos que fez como mandante na temporada, a média de pagantes é de45.327 – o segundo colocado da lista é o Corinthians, com uma média de33.382 pagantes.

Como mandante, no Maracanã, o Flamengo tem 13 vitórias, dois empates e duas derrotas, um aproveitamento de 80,4% dos pontos disputados no Rio.

ARTILHEIROS EM ALTA!

Contar com um ataque poderoso é um grande passo para um time tornar-se campeão e, em 2019, os atacantes do Flamengo estão correspondendo. Os principais goleadores são Bruno Henrique e Gabigol, reforços para este ano. Juntos, os dois já balançaram as redes adversárias 27 vezes nesta temporada.

Gabriel Barbosa divide a artilharia do Brasileirão com Eduardo Sasha, do Santos, e Everaldo, da Chapecoense, neste momento, todos com cinco gols.
