Ramdin focuses on mental challenge

Denesh Ramdin, West Indies new Test captain, is convinced there is the talent available in the Caribbean to revive their form over five days

Denesh Ramdin, West Indies new Test captain, is convinced there is the talent available in the Caribbean to revive their form over five days but they must overcome the mental frailties which have happened there attempts to climb the Test rankings. He wants his team to play “smarter cricket” and is eager to impart his style of leadership and thinking, which he believes are the qualities the selectors have seen, on his team-mates beginning with the visit of New Zealand.”For the last six to seven years, West Indies have gone off the boil in Tests because our opponents have out-thought us more. We need to think harder as a team,” Ramdin told ESPNcricinfo. “The talent is there. The cricketing skill is always there but it’s more mental with us. Since my West Indies U-19 experiences and Trinidad stints as captain, I’ve always focused and prided myself on proper analysis of the game and we need to improve on this to move up.”Ramdin is confident that he will be able to deal with the pressure, expectation and responsibility the captaincy brings having been vice-captain for five years but knows it will be an increasing challenge to ensure he continues to focus enough time on his own game, which is already to the dual role of being a keeper-batsman.”Darren [Sammy] did well with the resources he had and many thanks to him but I’m relishing the challenge,” he said, before the news of Sammy’s retirement. “There will be ups and downs but I’m ready to balance it all. Over the past 12-15 months I’ve worked on my personal form and it remains the same – I want to help anchor the team and get the lower order to contribute more runs.”Ramdin was quick to pick out West Indies’ batting as the area that needed immediate attention. “We need to bat better in both innings in a Test and not just one. We must have consistency because we’ve been faltering with the bat too much.”Ramdin mapped out his vision for the team on the pitch and said he felt the wicketkeeper’s role was one that will benefit him in the captaincy. “I see a lot from behind the wicket – how the opposition bats to my bowlers – and this helps me in strategizing as it’s the best view in the house.”So now I have a more hands-on approach and more input to control things and to form tactics my way to get guys out based on what I see. This perspective would help in containing opponents and also, I get the best chance to assess the pitches constantly out there in the middle.”He sees the upcoming visit of New Zealand as a good litmus test as the teams are so close to each other in the Test rankings and because the teams have dominated each other in their respective home conditions over the past few years. Ramdin wants to overturn the losses suffered on tour of New Zealand, but despite beating them in the Caribbean on their previous visit has warned that they should not underestimate even though conditions are expected to favour West Indies’ spinners far more. With the captain involved more in team selection as per the recent mandates laid down by the WICB in accordance with the Pybus report, Ramdin said the door was open even to those who have been out of the Test side for a considerable time if they can show the required form. This is particularly pertinent for Dwayne Bravo, who last played a Test in 2010 (or even first-class cricket since last year) but was termed “one of the best allrounders in the game and a matchwinner,” who Ramdin “would love to have in the team as they have a great working relationship.” Last month Bravo spoke of his frustration at having been overlooked for so long.Ramdin also picked out Sunil Narine has having a key role to play in all formats, not just Twenty20, and said the likes of Bravo and Kieron Pollard can stake a claim for Test cricket although that will be difficult for the pair in the short term with Bravo currently nursing a shoulder injury and Pollard playing the IPL.For now, Ramdin is starting to look forward to the Test series against New Zealand – the second match of which is in front of his home crowd in Trinidad. “The first Test in Jamaica is Chris [Gayle’s] 100th so hopefully we can do well there and carry over the momentum to Trinidad. I am eager and happy to run out at home in front our fans.”

Tamim's record kept him in team, says Mushfiqur

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has said that he and the team management took into account Tamim Iqbal’s standing in the team when they decided to continue with him in the third ODI

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has said that he and the team management took into account Tamim Iqbal’s standing in the team when they decided to continue with him in the third ODI against India.Tamim, the Bangladesh opener, came under scrutiny after yet another failure in the previous game, after which there were some expectations that he might be given a break. Tamim’s top score in the last 15 international innings has been 31, and has scored a duck and four in the two matches in this series. His last ten innings have produced only three scores in double-figures. Not since his 2008-09 slump has Tamim gone through such a long period not scoring a half-century.Bangladesh had Shamsur Rahman in the 15-man squad but never used him. Mominul Haque was dropped for the second and third matches despite having a better year than most out-of-form batsmen in the team, including Tamim, Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah. All three of these players have been consistently given chances.Mushfiqur said that past record is taken into account when making the call. “He [Shamsur Rahman] was here as a back-up opener,” said Mushfiqur. “The team management felt that although Tamim couldn’t perform according to his potential, he can be given another chance. He has been our main batsman in the last couple of years. He was a key player.”It is based on what type of player you are looking to drop. If it is a proven player who has been there for four or five years, you have to see him playing for five, six or ten games. To replace him you will need to develop someone for four to five years.”We all have input in the selection, including the coach and the rest of the team management and of course the selectors. So far I haven’t found anything wrong [with the selections] but hopefully in future we will try to clarify our selections to you.”He has also quashed speculations regarding his future as Bangladesh captain after overseeing nine consecutive ODI losses, which technically ended with the abandoned third ODI against India. Mushfiqur had resigned suddenly after Bangladesh lost the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe last year, before reversing his decision. He said he wouldn’t repeat such an act, but would agree with any decision taken by the BCB. “I felt the decision at that time was a mistake. Those who feel for the team wouldn’t make this sort of mistake again,” he said. “But it is not in my hand, if those above me feel that there is someone better than me in the team and they tell me, then I wouldn’t have a problem leaving the captaincy.”The pitches in the second and third ODI were pacer-friendly and that meant a struggle for both sets of batsmen, but that did not mean it was difficult to chase 100 runs, Mushfiqur said. He said that more practice on such surfaces will make it easier for his batsmen to score on them.”As I said after the last game, we have the ability to chase 100 runs against any team. There is nothing wrong with the wicket or preparation, but we lacked application. If we keep playing on these wickets in domestic cricket, then we can have a better chance against West Indies or in the World Cup.”

India A in command after Naman Ojha double ton

A breathtaking double-century from Naman Ojha and three wickets from Jasprit Bumrah took India A to a commanding position at the end of the second day’s play against Australia A in Brisbane

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jul-2014
ScorecardA breathtaking double-century from Naman Ojha and three wickets from Jasprit Bumrah took India A to a commanding position at the end of the second day’s play of their four-day game against Australia A in Brisbane. Naman added 122 runs with Nos. 10 and 11, whose combined contributions to those two partnerships was 11 runs, before India A declared on 9 for 475.Phil Hughes and Alex Doolan put on 33 for the first wicket as Australia A began their reply, before Bumrah struck in the ninth over to remove Doolan. Peter Forrest then added another 33 with Hughes before Bumrah struck again. Hughes fell at the same score, bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni, and Pragyan Ojha and Umesh Yadav then joined the party to leave Australia A 6 for 99. Mitchell Marsh and Sam Whiteman were together at the crease at stumps, having added 27 in 6.3 overs. With two more days left to play, it will take quite a bit of effort for Australia A to turn things around.India began the day on 6 for 304, with Naman on 82, and he reached his hundred in the 10th over of the morning, with a six off legspinner Cameron Boyce. India A were soon eight down, though, after Boyce dismissed Dhawal Kulkarni and Umesh Yadav in successive overs. Naman, at that point, was on 110.He immediately scored a flurry of boundaries, including a four and two sixes in successive deliveries off Boyce, to move to 152 and take India A’s total to 400, before Moises Henriques had his namesake Pragyan Ojha caught behind. Pragyan’s share of the partnership of 47 between the two Ojhas was a mere four runs.Naman Ojha struck 29 fours and eight sixes in his unbeaten 219•Getty Images

Naman then proceeded to dominate another partnership in even more spectacular manner, as India A scored 75 runs in the next 91 balls to declare on 9 for 475. Jasprit Bumrah’s share of the unbroken ninth wicket partnership was 7 off 34 balls. Naman reached his 200 with another six, this time off fast bowler Chadd Sayers, and continued finding the boundary almost every over, and the declaration arrived immediately after he struck three fours in one Sayers over. Naman’s unbeaten 219 came off 250 balls, with 29 fours and eight sixes. After reaching his 100, he scored 119 runs in just 114 balls.Boyce finished with four wickets, and Naman praised his bowling, saying “he has got very good drift and very good turn”, and that he would be even more of a threat if he bowled in the subcontinent.Asked how conditions were for batting, Ojha said the pitch was good to bat on after the initial few overs. “I think day one, the first session was a little difficult but after that things got pretty good for us and then I tried to hang in at the wicket and it went off well.”

Hales 'like nobody else we have' – Morgan

Eoin Morgan believes Alex Hales is a unique talent within the English game and has the potential to flourish in all three formats

Andrew McGlashan17-Aug-2014

Alex Hales during his hundred for England Lions against Sri Lanka A•Getty Images

Eoin Morgan believes Alex Hales is a unique talent within the English game and has the potential to flourish in all three formats having witnessed at first hand one of his most destructive innings.Hales, who has England’s lone T20 international hundred, was named* in England’s one-day squad to face India on Monday, and is in line to make his ODI debut at Bristol on August 25, as they search for a top-order combination that can provide the firepower to challenge at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. He had previously been set to come into the one-day side in West Indies earlier this year but picked up an injury and was then called in as cover against Sri Lanka but remained behind Michael Carberry in the pecking order. He has been in prolific form of late, in the last month hitting two Royal London Cup hundreds, including a ferocious 141 off 96 balls against Middlesex at Lord’s, and a century for England Lions against Sri Lanka A, a marked contrast to his fortunes earlier in the season when he was forced to briefly go on loan to Worcestershire having lost his place in Nottinghamshire’s Championship sideIt was the innings at Lord’s that Morgan, Middlesex’s limited-overs captain, was able to witness from close range having previously watched as Hales made 96 and 94 in the Championship clash between the two teams, and it reinforced his belief that he can have a successful international career in more than Twenty20.”He’s unbelievably destructive and stakes a huge claim to be selected in all three formats,” Morgan told ESPNcricinfo. “His form at county level has been phenomenal and he’s like nobody else we have around, with the combination of how hard he strikes the ball and the ability to take the game away from opposition.”I’ve witnessed Championship form against him and he was very impressive. It was the first time I’d seen him in Championship cricket and to see where he has come from since the start of the season when he had to go to Worcestershire on loan is a huge credit to him. He has ridden the wave in recent weeks.”The make-up of England’s top order is an often debated subject and the selectors have been reluctant to move away from the Alastair Cook-Ian Bell pairing which has become established over the last few years, believing they have the ability to move through the gears as needed even though the middle order, of which Morgan is part, are often left needing to up the ante whether chasing or setting a target.Morgan aware of players’ responsibilities

Eoin Morgan acknowledged that professional cricketers have a duty to play the game in a way that portrays the correct image to children who idolise their heroes and who will often copy what they see on the county or international arena.

Player behaviour has gained plenty of attention in recent weeks due to the spat between James Anderson and Ravindra Jadeja and while the nature of international sport will bring confrontation, Morgan understands that the right image is important.

“There have been a couple of incidents this year against Sri Lanka and India which reminds us that it’s important to recognise that there are always kids somewhere watching what you are doing,” Morgan said after a coaching session as part of an ECB Club open day. “You are an ambassador of the game and won’t be around for very long and you should set the standard and example by which it should be played.”

If Morgan’s comments are any judge, England are not about to rip up their play book – Hales splitting the Cook-Bell alliance could be as radical as it gets – although he did add that valuable lessons were learned during the one-day series in Australia at the start of this year which England lost 4-1.”We are building for a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand were a par score will be 300-320 on the majority of grounds but before that we have the series against India, in English conditions, where going hell for leather up front just would not be helpful at all. You take a lot of risks with the conditions [in England] and two new balls.”We’ve had a formula that has worked in England and now we need to find a balance between having success here and also winning in Australia.”Morgan also believes that the way England’s calendar has been structured to allow them to focus solely on one-day cricket from now right through to the World Cup gives them an excellent chance of correcting a dire record in the tournament going back to 1992 – the last time it was held in Australia and New Zealand.”It’s fantastic, really. An ideal lead into the World Cup. It puts great emphasis onto one-day cricket and it gives a great opportunity to build a squad that is good enough to win a World Cup”It’s an opportunity we haven’t had in quite a long time. With that, though, comes a lot of expectation and rightly so. We’ve a fantastic squad of players and the one-day series in Australia during the winter was a great learning curve and gave us a chance what we need squad-wise and attributes-wise for a side to be successful in those conditions.”I think conditions will suit us. The batting wickets are some of the best in the world and I don’t think the bounce is alien to us at all. During that one-day series we had chances to win but there were just areas of the game, and moments within them, that we lost at crucial moments. The fact we made the mistakes then gives us the chance to correct them.”*6.30pm, August 18: This story was updated when England squad was namedEoin Morgan was speaking at an ECB Club Open day supported by Waitrose – an initiative aiming to get more people playing and supporting cricket in their local communities – for more info www.ecb.co.uk/clubopendays
