Ghazanfar five-for leads Afghanistan to ODI series win over below-par Zimbabwe

Afghanistan have now won each of their bilateral ODI series against Zimbabwe bar the one in 2014, which was split

Himanshu Agrawal21-Dec-2024Sean Williams slog-swept Rashid Khan in the 24th over of Zimbabwe’s innings, but the ball ballooned off the top edge for Hashmatullah Shahidi at midwicket. Shahidi looked to catch it with a reverse cup, but dropped the ball – possibly because of the sun in his eyes – and invited the loudest cheers until then from the sparse crowd at Harare Sports Club. They didn’t have much going for them, really, since Zimbabwe were 89 for 8 at that stage. Williams, on 33 at the time, went on to score 60 at just under a run a ball, and dragged his side to 127 in 30.1 overs. Afghanistan wiped out the target of 128 with eight wickets and 23 overs in the bank. Sediqullah Atal followed up a knock of 104 from the second ODI with 52 off 50 balls in the third, hitting four fours and two sixes on the way, and Afghanistan completed a 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe after the first ODI was washed out. That gave Afghanistan their sixth successive ODI series win over Zimbabwe, who are yet to beat them in a bilateral series in seven attempts – the first one, back in July 2014, was shared 2-2.The chase began with just 15 runs from the first six overs, as Zimbabwe kept it tight. But Atal drove and got a top edge for four off Richard Ngarava in the seventh over, and that got Afghanistan going. Although Abdul Malik, the other opener, took his time, Atal attacked from the other end to raise the fifty stand in the 11th over. The partnership ended at 83 when Ngarava had Malik chopping on for 29, before Brian Bennett took a blinder running and diving to his left to send Atal back. Shahidi and Rahmat Shah, however, didn’t have any bothers finishing the job.[File photo] Sean Williams was the only Zimbabwe batter to take the fight to Afghanistan•Getty Images

But Afghanistan’s win on Saturday was set up by 18-year-old offspinner AM Ghazanfar. He bowled his quota of ten overs unchanged starting from the seventh, and finished with 5 for 33, his second ODI five-for in just 11 games. Shahidi chose to bowl first after winning the toss, and his bowlers proved the decision right. Afghanistan’s seamers were getting appreciable swing even after the powerplay, while their spinners almost magically turned the ball both ways.Eight of the ten wickets went to Ghazanfar and Rashid, who got 3 for 38. That, though was aa result of both batters not reading them well, and the on-field umpires making debatable calls – perhaps not reading the bowlers well either. In a series where the teams don’t have DRS to turn to, Craig Ervine and Ben Curran walked back unhappy. Even Sikandar Raza shook his head on being given out lbw off Rashid, but whether he did that because he was disappointed with the umpire or with himself… who can tell.Zimbabwe’s innings featured a mini-collapse as well as a big crumble. But before either of those, Afghanistan’s new-ball bowlers Fareed Ahmed and Azmatullah Omarzai kept a tight leash on opening batters Curran and Joylord Gumbie. Twenty-two of the first 28 balls were dots; there were four more to start the seventh over, after which Zimbabwe lost three wickets for five runs in next to no time.It started with Gumbie top-edging an attempted sweep off Ghazanfar to short fine-leg. Next over, Omarzai got one to seam away from Ervine, who was squared up as the ball went past. Ervine was given out caught behind, but there was no visible nick. Ghazanfar then got his second when he trapped Curran in front for 12 in the ninth over, although the first impression was that the ball was heading down the leg side.Rashid Khan picked up three wickets, but played second fiddle to his junior colleague, AM Ghazanfar•Afghanistan Cricket Board

Senior hands Raza and Williams briefly rebuilt thereafter. Williams had 21 runs off his first 22 balls, including three fours and a six, after 14 overs. But come the 16th, Raza’s wicket triggered a period where Zimbabwe lost five wickets for 29 runs. He was hit on the back leg by one which turned in from Rashid, and was adjudged lbw for 13. In his next over, Rashid had Bennett lbw with a googly as well, as Bennett played down the wrong line.Ghazanfar then got two more back to back, almost in identical fashion. He cleaned up both left-hand batters Tadiwanashe Marumani and Wellington Masakadza in the one over, the 19th of the innings, and each time, going around the wicket, the carrom ball fi the trick. Both batters swung across the line, and left a big gap between bat and pad for the ball to hit the off stump. On the hat-trick ball, Ghazanfar beat Newman Nyamhuri on the outside edge, with Shahidi placing as many as three slips for the right-hander.Williams, meanwhile, continued ticking at the other end even as he kept running out of partners. He whacked Rashid for four over midwicket, and slogged him for six over square leg, while Ghazanfar completed his five-for by having Nyamhuri top-edging to slip in between.Williams added 30 for the ninth wicket with Ngarava, and brought up his 36th ODI fifty when he hammered debutant seamer Bilal Sami to deep backward point. Williams had also bashed birthday boy Sami for a four and six off consecutive balls in the 14th over. But when going for a reverse sweep against Rashid in the 28th, Williams ended up tickling one to slip, where Mohammad Nabi caught him. Zimbabwe’s innings lasted only another 15 balls, in which Ngarava and Trevor Gwandu added eight runs. The defeat capped off a year in which Zimbabwe’s collective batting average was at its lowest at 14.22 (with a minimum of nine batting innings).

Melbourne Renegades sign Doggett, Jewell set to follow

Doggett signs for his fourth BBL club on a two-year deal while Jewell is set to leave Hurricanes on the final day of the player movement window

Tristan Lavalette05-Feb-2025Melbourne Renegades have further bolstered their pace stocks after landing free agent Brendan Doggett, while the club’s shake-up is set to continue with Hobart Hurricanes’ title-winning opener Caleb Jewell poised to sign with them before the BBL’s new player movement window ends on Thursday.Doggett, who was part of Australia’s squad during part of the recent India Test series, has played the past two seasons with Adelaide Strikers, but only claimed three wickets in six matches in BBL 14. He had previously played four seasons with Sydney Thunder after having started his career at Brisbane Heat. His signing comes on the back of Renegades securing left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff on a three-year deal after Perth Scorchers were not able to guarantee him a contract.Related

“Brendan is an exciting addition to our squad, he’s a skilful fast bowler with ability to execute under pressure and take important wickets,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said. “We believe Brendan will play an important role for us. To pair him up with Tom [Rogers], Jason, Adam [Zampa] and Will [Sutherland], we believe we have a powerful bowling unit that boasts variety and the very highest-end talent.”After missing out on the finals for the fifth time in the past six seasons, Renegades have also looked at shoring up their top-order batting. ESPNcricinfo understands that Jewell is set to be released from his Hurricanes contract and take up a deal with Renegades. He played a key role in Hurricanes’ championship campaign, complementing breakout opener Mitchell Owen in an anchoring role.Owen extended his contract with Hurricanes through to BBL 17, while free agent Tim David is expected to re-sign after significant interest from Melbourne Stars. Hurricanes, however, are believed to not have offered a contract to legspinner Peter Hatzoglou. He only took one wicket from six matches this season, but was relatively economical and did play through their finals campaign.ESPNcricinfo understands left-arm seam-bowling allrounder Hayden Kerr is set to re-sign with Sydney Sixers on a two-year deal having had considerable interest from several teams, including Stars.Kerr started his BBL career with Sixers in 2019-20 and has been a mainstay of the side since his breakout in BBL 11, highlighted by clubbing 98 not out as an opener against Strikers in the Challenger final. He took nine wickets from ten matches this season.Free agent D’Arcy Short is expected to re-sign with Strikers, but the club is believed to be still weighing up their batting options. The veteran averaged 23.50 with a strike rate of 135 from nine matches in various roles in Strikers’ batting-order.Caleb Jewell is set to leave Hurricanes for Renegades•Getty Images

Meanwhile, left-arm quick Joel Paris has returned to Scorchers, his original BBL club, after signing a one-year deal. Paris was Scorchers’ primary target to replace Behrendorff and he will rejoin the club he played for from BBL 5 through to BBL 10. He finished the latest BBL season strongly and helped Stars make an unlikely finals appearance.”We identified the need for another new-ball bowler and saw this as a great opportunity to bring Joel back to Perth,” Scorchers high-performance boss Kade Harvey said. “Joel had a strong BBL14 season for the Stars, bowling a lot of his overs during the powerplay. We also like having a left-arm pace bowler in the squad.”He’s an excellent leader and has been an enormous contributor for WA over many years, so we’re looking forward to having him throughout the whole summer.”Scorchers’ former captain Mitchell Marsh is still out of contract but appears likely to remain with the team despite interest from both Melbourne clubs. In another development, Stars general manager Blair Crouch has stood down after four seasons in the role. Stars appear set to reshape the general manager role to remove the cricket high-performance and list-management element from the job having hired former Australia fast bowler Clint McKay as T20 high-performance manager last year.

Gambhir flies back home from England due to family emergency

In Gambhir’s absence, Sitanshu Kotak, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Morne Morkel will take charge of the group

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jun-2025India’s Test squad in England will be without head coach Gautam Gambhir for the start of the closed-door warm-up fixture against India A in Beckenham from Friday. ESPNcricinfo has learnt Gambhir left for New Delhi on Wednesday due to a family emergency. In Gambhir’s absence, Sitanshu Kotak and Ryan ten Doeschate, the assistant coaches, along with bowling coach Morne Morkel, will take charge of the group. Hrishikesh Kanitkar, meanwhile, is in charge of India A.The match in Beckenham offers the senior India side an opportunity to tune up ahead of the team’s departure for Leeds ahead of the Test series opener against England from June 20.Gambhir’s absence comes at a crucial time, with the team management set to deliberate on the batting order, something he had said would be decided in the run-up to the first Test. The retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have opened up at least two slots, with B Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair in the running to fill them.Of members of India’s Test squad who featured for India A in two unofficial Tests against England Lions, Nair, Dhruv Jurel and Abhimanyu Easwaran were among the runs. Nair top-scored in the series with 259 runs, including a double-century in the first game in Canterbury.Jurel, meanwhile, hit three half-centuries to score 227 runs, while Easwaran struck two fifties. KL Rahul, tipped to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Test series, made scores of 116 and 51 in his only outing in Northampton. The team management will also potentially be toying over who among Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy will play as the seam-bowling allrounder. Reddy picked up two wickets across 26.5 overs while Thakur got two wickets across 43 overs across the two first-class games against Lions. For the pace attack, it’s likely that two out of Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna will join Jasprit Bumrah in the XI for the first Test.”All in all, very happy with the start so far,” Morkel said ahead of the warm-up game against India A. “I was a little bit nervous in terms of the lack of red-ball [cricket] we’ve played. But seeing how the guys are moving around and training the last three days, it’s a pleasing sight. There’s some quality energy in this group, and that’s what you need. You need to go into a Test series confident, you need to have that team spirit in the group, and I think so far they have done a great job.”The five-Test series marks the start of India’s new World Test Championship cycle as well as the beginning of Shubman Gill’s tenure as Test captain.

Online Gaming Bill: BCCI to lose Dream11 as sponsor

The government’s new Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 has disallowed “real money games”, hitting companies like Dream11 hard

PTI25-Aug-2025Fantasy sports company Dream11, which recently shut down its real money games after the central government passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 in both houses of parliament, has intimated to the BCCI that it won’t be able to continue as the lead sponsor of the India cricket teams as its revenue stream is expected to be severely hit.Dream11 has a US$ 44 million (INR 358 crore approx.) deal with the BCCI – 2023 to 2026. Between them, Dream11 and My11Circle, another fantasy sports company, contribute around INR 1000 crore to the BCCI through the sponsorship of Indian cricket teams and the IPL.The new government bill states that “no person shall offer aid, abet, induce, indulge, engage in offering online money gaming services nor shall involve in any advertisement which directly or indirectly promotes any person to play any online money game”. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia declined to comment on the development and the way forward, but it is understood that Dream11 might not have to pay a hefty penalty as the contract has a specific clause about getting a waiver in case there is a government regulation in place.

While the new bill allows social gaming and subscription-based use, the ban on real money gaming means that the biggest chunk of Dream11’s revenue stream is gone.In a recent statement, Dream11 said, “We have always been a law abiding company and have always conducted our business in compliance with the law. While we believe that progressive law would have been the way forward, we will respect the law and fully comply with ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025’.”The writing was always on the cards once the real money gaming was banned in the bill. That itself accounts for at least 90% of the revenue of all major players in the fantasy market,” a fantasy gaming industry insider told PTI. “The next interesting phase will be what My11Circle, which pays Rs 125 crore annually to BCCI for being official fantasy partner of IPL, do?”They might also have to go the Dream11 way. As far as individual endorsement of cricketers with various apps are concerned, that market will also be severely hit.”

Rockets keep slim hopes alive with six-wicket win

Invincibles kept in check by spin trio of Kirstie Gordon, Ash Gardner and Alana King

ECB Media21-Aug-2025Trent Rockets 113 for 4 (Scrivens 34, Wellington 1-15, Capsey 1-16) beat Oval Invincibles 109 for 7 (Lanning 45, Gardner 2-10, Gordon 2-21) by six wicketsTrent Rockets won a must-win game against Oval Invincibles at The Kia Oval to keep alive their slim qualification hopes in The Hundred. Both teams were coming into the match off the back of defeats and a loss would have spelled the end of Rockets’ campaign but, having won the toss and elected to bowl first, they’d have been delighted at the break to have limited the hosts to just 109 for 7.It was a curious innings for the home team who seemed to struggle to adapt to the surface, never able to kick on in terms of run-rate and kept in check throughout by the Rockets’ spin trio of Kirstie Gordon, Alana King and Ash Gardner.Meg Lanning top-scored with a 35-ball 45, and she put on 47 for the second wicket with Alice Capsey (15), but Rockets would have been the happier of the two teams between innings. They got off to a strong start in their run chase with Bryony Smith and the recalled Grace Scrivens putting on 51 for the opening wicket, and despite a few blips – losing Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Gardner – they were comfortable enough in hauling in Invincibles’ total with 16 balls to spare – Jodi Grewock and Heather Graham adding a late flourish to finish the game in a hurry.Rockets’ next game is at bottom-placed Welsh Fire, a huge chance to keep their qualification hopes alive, while for Oval Invincibles they’ll need to reverse their slump at Headingley on Saturday to keep themselves in the fight.Meerkat Match Hero Scrivens said: “I’m happy to get the win. I was really glad to be back in the team and to help contribute. Obviously, I would have liked to have finished it off, but I’m happy.”I think Bry played her [Marizanne Kapp] really well. She obviously sat deep, used the bounce and the wicket and the square, so I thought it was a really good option for her. I thought it was a really good pitch, I thought they were under-par, and I was happy when we chased them.”

Liverpool fans react after Manuel Pellegrini calls out Jurgen Klopp

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter in defensive fashion after West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini publicly called out their manager Jurgen Klopp, following the 1-1 draw between the two sides at the London Stadium on Monday night.

The Reds missed the opportunity to go even further ahead of Pellegrini’s former side Manchester City as a result of the draw, although they can probably count themselves lucky they didn’t lose as their goal should have been ruled out for offside.

Hammers boss Pellegrini, who appeared to still have his former side Malaga’s last gasp defeat to Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League quarter-final on his mind, was not happy with the decision.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

The Chilean said: “Klopp is used to winning with offside goals. He beat me against Malaga with a goal seven metres offside – so he cannot complain about anything.”

Naturally, Liverpool fans on Twitter have leapt to the defence of their beloved boss after the war of words…

Dunne reveals Bardsley advice ahead of Sunderland move

[ad_pod ]

Jimmy Dunne has explained why he joined Sunderland from Burnley, in quotes reported by The Sunderland Echo.

The 21-year-old completed a loan move to the Stadium of Light during the January transfer window.

What’s the word?

Dunne spent the first half of the season in the Scottish Premiership, playing for Hearts.

The centre-back played 14 times for the SPFL side in all competitions but is now in League One as the Black Cats attempt to gain promotion to the Championship.

And Dunne says that Phil Bardsley, who spent six years at the club, had a key role in selling Sunderland to him.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

“Phil Bardsley did talk to me about the club,” Dunne told The Sunderland Echo. “How highly he rates it, how much he enjoyed his time here.

“That was certainly something I listened to and enjoyed listening to.

“It’s not just the size of the club, it’s the pressure and expectation that comes with that. It’s got a huge history, and being part of something potentially amazing, you want that.”

The attitude Sunderland need

Sunderland desperately need hungry young talent as they seek to get back into the Championship.

They are currently fourth in the table, nine points behind leaders Luton Town, but they do have three games in hand.

Win those and they will be level on points with the current pace-setters and Dunne will hope to play a major role in that.

He started his career with Manchester United and has clearly had the exact right attitude drilled into him – he is desperate to get better and desperate to win.

If that desire transmits to his team-mates, Sunderland will be in excellent shape.

Manchester City have to make themselves irresistible for Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester City have been linked with Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt according to Sport via Calciomercato, but do City really need him?

It’s fair to say Guardiola has the strongest squad in England which already includes centre-backs John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany. Looking at that it’s easy to question just why they would need another.

However, when you look closer at City’s options in front of the keeper you see a 32-year-old injury prone Vincent Kompany and 31-year-old Nicolas Otamendi who hasn’t repeated last season’s form this term. Both of those players would be lucky to last two more seasons at the club, and so that only leaves Laporte and Stones.

It’s important City look to replace players before their more experienced men leave. It means the younger players can learn from the old guard like Kompany and avoid having the pressure of being first choice.

Of course, if De Ligt was to come to City he’d have a tough job breaking into Guardiola’s strongest 11, particularly with Laporte and Stones, who champion his philosophy, keeping the defence tight regularly. But City need more than just a starting 11 now they aim to win all four trophies every season, so it would be unreasonable to suggest the Dutchman wouldn’t get game time.

Benjamin Mendy being injured has meant Guardiola has, in simple terms, gone for a 4-3-3 this season. When City have the ball the holding midfielder drops between the centre-halves and the fullbacks tuck in and push forward. When Mendy returns, the Catalonian may use a three-at-the-back system with wing backs and that means another spot for a centre back which could be De Ligt.

Otamendi’s technical ability simply isn’t up to scratch for the manager but the Ajax youngster would fit right into City’s system and make them even more formidable going forward as well as at the back.

City do need another centre-back and particularly one with the abilities De Ligt possesses, but whether City’s hierarchy feel he’s the right man, we’ll have to see. They aren’t thought to currently be leading the transfer chase for one of Europe’s hottest prospects, though those at City need to make themselves the first port of call, in case they really do think he’s worth the money.

Who should City buy to strengthen their backline in summer?

Liverpool fans on Twitter looking forward to seeing Alisson in action

Liverpool fans will have been waiting for tonight’s clash with Bayern Munich for a very long time. The Reds have got a huge clash at Anfield ahead of them as two of the world’s best goalkeepers will be going head to head in Alisson Becker and Manuel Neuer, and the fans cannot wait to see their Brazilian in action.

One of the key battles will be between the two shot-stoppers, Manuel Neuer has been passed fit late as he was initially believed to be missing the Anfield leg of the tie, however, he’s now deemed ready to face the Reds, and he could be in for a long evening. At the other end, though, Alisson is looking as solid as ever and it was the Brazilian’s incredible save against Napoli that ensured they made it to this stage.

In the eds last game against Napoli at Anfield in the Champions League group stages the Reds needed to either win 1-0 or win by two or more goals to progress seeing as they lost 1-0 away in Italy. With the score at 1-0, the ball fell to Akadiusz Milik in the box who got a good shot away with hs right foot just for it to be smothered by the onrushing Alisson. It was a save that kept the Kopites in the Champions League, and now they want to see more of that against Bayern tonight.

You can read the Reds’ thoughts on Alisson here:

The Reds cannot get enough of Alisson and will hope he can be their saviour again tomorrow evening.
