Tottenham fans were delighted with Kyle Walker-Peters vs Huddersfield

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur and Lucas Moura in particular were in clinical form against relegated Huddersfield Town on Saturday lunchtime.

Mauricio Pochettino fielded a handful of fringe players with one eye on a pair of trips to the Etihad Stadium this week, as Fernando Llorente, Victor Wanyama, Juan Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters all stepped into the starting XI.

All four made the most of their opportunity, albeit against a hapless visiting side, and the latter particularly impressed on a day which forced fans to question why he doesn’t get more of a chance.

The 22-year-old made only his 9th appearance in all-competitions and just his third start in the Premier League this season, but the maturity of his performance pointed towards a much greater level of experience.

His excellent display drew plenty of plaudits on social media as delighted supporters turned out in their numbers to heap praise on the back-up right-back.

But if he continues to take his opportunities with such conviction it won’t be long before Kieran Trippier’s place comes under serious threat.

Here’s what the fans had to say about his performance…

Leeds fans want Tyler Roberts to win Young player of the Year

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have voiced their opinions on who should claim the club’s Young Player of the Year award and there is a clear winner in the minds of the fanbase.

Tyler Roberts has excelled in recent weeks when playing in a deeper role and his performances have seen the fans campaign for him to win the yearly accolade.

The Welshman faces tough competition from Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton but Leeds fans believe that Roberts has to be the winner.

Roberts has scored three goals and assisted four so far this season but his impact since dropping into the midfield has seen him become one of the first names on the teamsheet for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The 20-year-old has been instrumental whilst playing as an attacking midfielder, a role which he has recently taken up after Samu Saiz’s departure from Elland Road.

Clarke and Shackleton, of course, are worthy nominees but if the twitter replies are any indication of the fans’ voting intention then Roberts should win with a landslide.

Arsenal hit with major injury blow as Ramsey and Suarez ruled out

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal will be without both Aaron Ramsey and Denis Suarez when they face Wolves on Wednesday, per The Mirror.

The two midfielders are both injured.

What’s the word?

Ramsey sustained a hamstring injury as the Gunners took on Napoli in the Europa League quarter-final in Italy.

With a move to Juventus looming in the summer, the Welshman may well have played his final game for the club.

Suarez, meanwhile, reportedly injured his groin in the clash with the Serie A giants.

Both players missed the 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners suffered a major blow in their quest to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish.

Manager Unai Emery is already without Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck, but he could be boosted by the return of Granit Xhaka this week.

The Switzerland international is said to have recovered from a hip injury.

Xhaka and Torreira

This could be something of a blessing for Emery.

Being without both Ramsey and Suarez means that there is an opportunity to embrace the steel in the Gunners’ squad.

A midfield partnership of Xhaka and Torreira could see Wolves nullified in the centre of the pitch, such are their tough-tackling attributes.

Mesut Ozil could then roam around in the attacking third, looking to supply the bullets to both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal, ultimately, need to win if they are to stay in touch with both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the top-four race.

Newcastle fans desperate for Perez to return for Liverpool game

[ad_pod ]

Ayoze Perez scored his 12th goal of the season (11 in the Premier League) in the 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday.

The Spaniard collected a knock-down from Salomon Rondon and hammered the ball into the roof of the net, but his celebration was muted as he was carrying a knock and soon after Rafael Benitez had to take him off.

The injury to the 25-year-old occurred after he had danced past a few Brghton players and then skipped over Shane Duffy but the Irishman caught him on the hip and Perez couldn’t continue.

The change spoiled Newcastle’s momentum and without their star man Brighton clawed their way back into the game and equalised through Pascal Gross.

Newcastle fans were quick to respond to Perez’s post-match tweet in hope that he will be fit, one fan said “get that hip sorted for Saturday bonny lad” and another added “get well soon Ayo.”

With a potentially title deciding match at St James’s Park on Saturday Newcastle will hope that Perez is fit so they can have a say.

Portsmouth: Ryan Edwards is too good an option for Kenny Jackett to pass up on

With the regular season wrapped up and attention now firmly focused on the play-offs, it will soon be time to start speculating who Kenny Jackett wants to bring in this summer.

The Portsmouth manager has the luck of having one of the best sides in League One and an owner with the funds to attract some big names to the south coast, and with some big teams relegated down to League Two this season, there are players out there who could be available on the cheap as well as bring more quality to Pompey, and one of those names is Plymouth Argyle defender Ryan Edwards.

According to the Sun via Football League World, Pompey are interested in the 25-year-old centre-back, and with the Pilgrims recently booking their ticket down to League Two with relegation confirmed on the final day of the season, Edwards could be a very cheap pick-up for Jackett this summer.

Despite being part of a side that has been relegated, Edwards has been one of Plymouth’s most impressive players this season, and his experience in League One will make him a desirable acquisition for teams in the division looking to bolster their backline, and Pompey should be making the defender a top priority regardless if they’re promoted or not.

Edwards would add needed experience and quality to an area of the pitch Portsmouth will need improving on next season, and the Plymouth man could be the defender to solve that problem for Jackett.

Portsmouth fans, would Edwards be a good summer signing? Let us know!

Better without him: Liverpool fans needn’t have worried about Buvac’s departure

[ad_pod ]Liverpool fans on Twitter went into full panic mode around this time of the season last year, after Jurgen Klopp’s No.2 Zeljko Buvac mysteriously left the club. The man who Klopp described as the ‘The Brain’ behind both Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool’s high-intensity football departed the club in peculiar circumstances; it was first revealed that he left for personal reasons, before never returning and being replaced by Pep Lijnders.Does your club have a legend who is criminally overrated? Fans answer this tough question in the video below…Liverpool fans feared the worst after the Bosnian-Serb left Anfield. Klopp had worked with Buvac for 17 years at Mainz, Dortmund and then Liverpool before the pair went their separate ways, and many of the Reds supporters felt that Buvac would be a huge loss given his clear role in the German’s success throughout his managerial career. However, since his departure, the Merseysiders have embarked on an inspirational title challenge against Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking Manchester City side, and have also made it to their second Champions League final in two years.

It’s safe to say that they have arguably improved since Buvac left, but these Liverpool fans on Twitter were fretting over his departure around the time…

Lucas Moura sends Tottenham through under circumstances unbeknown to supporters

[ad_pod ]

That doesn’t happen to Tottenham Hotspur.

The desolation, the silence, the looks of ‘what might have been’, the near-misses, they happen to Spurs. They are familiar bedfellows for fans. We know them well.

But this time, just this time, it was different. In Amsterdam, on a rainy evening that will now be remembered for all time, it was Ajax, this brilliant young team, marshalled by the superb Matthijs De Ligt and spearheaded by the genuinely exceptional Hakim Ziyech, who sank to the turf on the final whistle, seeing, but not quite believing.

They headed into the game with a 1-0 aggregate lead. They knew that victory would see them through to the final. So did Spurs. Two goals in the first half seemed to put the tie to bed. Fans across social media vented their fury. Kieran Trippier had made too many mistakes. The players looked tired, dead on their feet, their legs not quite catching up with their brains.

But the second half, that crazy, ridiculous, joyous second half. Lucas Moura was the last player signed by Spurs, in 2018, and then-PSG manager Unai Emery, now in the dugout at Arsenal sold him to the club. Irony can have such a sweet sting. That second half saw the Brazilian turn in a performance befitting the greats of his nation; his first goal came after a lightning counter-attack and gave Spurs belief. Fans cheered. They dare not really believe yet. We’ve been here too many times. “It’s the hope that kills you.”

But then he scored again. The chance looked to have gone when Fernando Llorente – an inspired half-time substitution – sent the ball straight at Andre Onana. But Lucas collected it and embarked on a dribble that grows more unbelievable the more you watch it. He took around six touches and every single one of them was perfect. His finish was laser-guided, into the bottom corner, sending Spurs fans, this writer included, into something approaching delirium. One more goal; all we needed was one more goal.

Ajax came again, of course they did, they hit the post again, as they had done in the first leg. Jermaine Jenas, the former Spurs player turned an excellent co-commentator, said to Darren Fletcher, “something’s happening”. It felt like it.

Spurs hit the crossbar with around five minutes to go, the ex-Ajax star Jan Vertonghen, the would-be hero, going so close to a fairytale return. He tried to stab the rebound but it was cleared off the line.

And then, it switched. There was something approaching acceptance. Going into the game, there had been an attitude of ‘they have to give everything’, and they did. Every single member of that Spurs team had. They had fought, they had battled, and they had gone so close. Ajax versus Liverpool would be an excellent final.

Ajax began to waste time and as we approached the sixth minute of injury time, Moussa Sissoko sent a long, hopeful ball forward. Llorente knocked it down, of course he did, and Dele Alli, the big-game player in the Spurs ranks, sent an impudent flick through to Lucas. He hit it straight away. It wasn’t even a chance, really, and it wouldn’t rank very highly on the xG scale. But it was accurate and it caught Onana cold. The net rippled and Lucas peeled away, mobbed by his team-mates. Fletcher, in the BT Sport commentary box, couldn’t believe it. All the videos since show that nobody else could either.

This writer sank to his knees when the ball hit the back of the net. I’ve seen the goal so many times since and yet, I can’t really remember the moment it went in. What I can remember is the pure, guttural emotion.

Supporting Spurs is different, really, because we’re just so used to going close and seeing victory snatched away. Think of the multitude of FA Cup semi-finals we’ve lost, the 5-1 loss to Newcastle United, third in a two-horse race, losing Luka Modric and Gareth Bale and Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick, appointing Tim Sherwood, failing in the Europa League, never getting a sniff of the Premier League trophy, St Totteringham’s Day, lasagna. This doesn’t happen to us.

But we’ll be there. We’ll be in Madrid, ready to take on Liverpool for the right to be called champions of Europe.

Everyone will fondly remember the tears that followed the semi-final. We will ask each other, a decade from now, “where were you when we beat Ajax?”

It is the most astonishing moment I can remember as a Tottenham fan and it may never be replicated. Or perhaps, just perhaps, it will be topped, on June 1. After Wednesday, don’t you dare rule this team out.

Leeds United: Bielsa must consider signing Luca Connell in the summer

What a season it has been to be a young player at Leeds United.

The likes of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton have all been given the opportunity to prove themselves by Marcelo Bielsa, whose trust in the club’s youth academy has been one of the main reasons for why the Whites have been so successful this year.

Whereas other managers in the Championship have opted to ignore their homegrown talent and instead field players with a wealth of experience, the Argentine’s willingness to utilise Leeds’ most exciting prospects could pay a dividend when the transfer window opens in July.

With Elland Road proving to be the perfect destination to start a career for young footballers, it will be of no surprise if the Whites manage to convince Luca Connell to make the switch from Bolton Wanderers this summer.

According to The Sun (as quoted by HITC), Leeds are reportedly eyeing up a move for the 18-year-old who is out of contract with the Trotters in the summer.

Although any move would have to include a compensatory fee due to Connell’s age, the fact that it could cost the Whites as little as £300,000 to secure his services could be a risk worth taking for Bielsa.

A versatile player who can play both as a midfielder and a defender, the Republic of Ireland under-19 international has already made 12 senior appearances for the Trotters and looks set for stardom if he makes the correct choice for his career.

By deciding to leave Bolton, who are preparing for a season in League One after being relegated from the second tier, and moving to Leeds, Connell could develop alongside the likes of Shackleton and Kalvin Phillips and eventually become a hero at Elland Road in the future.

What do you think Whites fans? Should Bielsa consider signing Connell in the Championship? How impressed have you been with the Argentine’s youth policy this season? Let us know below.

Joe Aribo would be a perfect replacement at Aston Villa for Jack Grealish

[ad_pod ]

According to Football League World, Aston Villa are showing an interest in impressive Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo.

What’s the word?

Aribo has lit up League One this season, starring for the Addicks during their promotion charge.

The 22-year-old has been in magnificent form lately, scoring four goals in his last five matches.

His good performances have now caught the eye of one of the Championship’s leading clubs with Aston Villa monitoring the player, per Football League World.

They claim that the midfield man is set to be watched by Villa scouts when his side take on Sunderland in the play-off final this weekend.

Aribo’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and therefore, he’d be an absolute snip for the Villans.

Grealish replacement on the cards?

With Jack Grealish being the subject of interest from Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Villa could well be in the market for someone to replace him.

Considering Aribo’s output in terms of goals it would be the ideal replacement. The attacking midfielder is superb going forward, adding five assists to the ten times he’s found the back of the net.

Grealish, on the other hand, has six goals and seven assists so the similarities between the two statistically are clear to see.

The midfielder has the ability to perform in a variety of positions. As well as being able to play deeper in the middle of the park, he can feature behind the striker and also out wide, just like Grealish.

With this in mind, he’d be more than suitable should the Villa skipper depart.

His future is still very unclear but if they achieve promotion it’s more likely they’ll have a better chance of holding onto him.

That shouldn’t put Dean Smith off pursuing Aribo, however, who would add a great deal of quality to Villa’s midfield.

Costing nothing, there is certainly no risk to the deal and it would be an extremely shrewd move should the club convince the player to join.

Transfer Focus: Adam Maher could be a fine Ntcham replacement if Celtic decide to cash in

[ad_pod ]

Celtic are interested in signing AZ Alkmaar midfielder Adam Maher this summer, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

What’s the story?

Now Neil Lennon has been appointed Celtic manager, the Hoops can crack on with hugely important transfer business ahead of the new season.

Lennon will likely be keen to make a number of changes to personnel at the club and there could be quite a turnover of players before the window metaphorically ‘slams shut’.

One player apparently on the Hoops’ radar is central midfielder Adam Maher, with Dutch paper De Telegraaf claiming on Saturday that Celtic were one of six clubs interested in his services.

With his contract expiring at the Eredivisie club, he would be available on a free transfer, making him a tempting budget signing.

Who is he?

Maher has long been a regular in the Dutch top-flight, breaking through at AZ Alkmaar before moving to PSV back in 2013 and playing over 100 times for the giants.

Spells at Turkish side Osmanlispor and FC Twente followed before returning to AZ Alkmaar for the 2018/19 season, helping them achieve European qualification in Eredivisie.

He won five caps with the Netherlands between 2012 and 2013 but failed to maintain inclusion in national team squads.

Still just 25 years old though he is a player of ability available on the cheap this summer, and is perhaps well placed to replace a Celtic star said to be on the verge of a Hoops exit.

Ntcham’s replacement?

It was reported last week by Football Insider that Celtic are ready to cash in on Olivier Ntcham during the upcoming transfer window for a fee of around £7m.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

He’s increasingly found himself on the fringes of Celtic starting XIs, with the emergence of Ryan Christie meaning he’s spent plenty of time on the bench this season.

Still a classy option, other clubs are likely interested in signing him and selling him for a substantial fee could allow the Hoops to reinvest in other areas of the squad, especially if a player of Maher’s calibre is available on a free.
