Manchester Utd fans slam claim about De Gea buying into "ambition and direction"

[ad_pod ]

An article in The Times has revealed all the details on David de Gea’s new Manchester United contract, but there’s one aspect of it that fans just aren’t buying.

Regardless of the circumstances, it’s always good news when an immensely talent player puts pen to paper on a new deal with your club.

Yes, Manchester United’s Spanish shot-stopper has declined significantly in the last 18 months, but on his day he is still up there with the very best, and some fans were even getting emotional when his new deal was announced this week.

As more details emerge however, such as the fact that he will earn roughly £375,000 a week, fans have been left baffled by one thing.

According to the report, De Gea was impressed by the Red Devils’ “ambition and direction”.

Needless to say after several years of disappointment following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, fans are calling fake news on this one.

Take a look at some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Everton fan show support to Lucas Digne following Bournemouth defeat

[ad_pod ]

Everton have got off to a mixed start to the season and, after slipping to a third consecutive away defeat in the league, fans how showed support for Lucas Digne.

The Frenchman has, for the most part, continued where he left off last term – when he won Everton’s Player of the Year – and he has made a valuable contribution in defence and attack so far.

However, he failed to impress against Bournemouth in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat. Not only did he fail to find a target with 10 out of 12 crossing attempts, but he achieved a pass accuracy of just 68% and only once came close to adding to his season tally of three assists.

Despite an underwhelming showing from the left-back, fans have chosen to back their player and offer him support in response to his latest Twitter post, which stated that the squad is “always together”.

With Sheffield United the visitors to Goodison Park on Saturday there is a good chance for the Toffees to return to winning ways, and strong squad harmony will certainly be needed for success in the campaign ahead.

Spurs boss Pochettino mustn’t treat Eriksen differently to Alderweireld & Vertonghen

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Following a dreadful display against Olympiacos in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur contract rebel Christian Eriksen was, probably deservedly, dropped to the substitutes’ bench for the Premier League trip to Leicester City at the weekend.

Marca reported earlier this month that the Denmark international has rejected every Daniel Levy contract offer on the table as he waits for Real Madrid to make their move, and it’s hard to argue that he has been 100% committed to Spurs when it has come to his performances this term.

Nothing went right for the 27-year-old in Athens as he picked up a 3/10 rating from Football London for his display, yet he still managed to stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

If Mauricio Pochettino showed some faith in the Dane then, it was a different story when it came to naming his starting XI at the King Power Stadium as he was left among the substitutes.

The Argentine manager is lucky in that sense that he has great competition for places – in theory anyway – with Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso – when he returns from injury – all able to fill in for Eriksen.

If Pochettino is going to be ruthless when it comes to one of the main playmakers in his team, he must do the same to two key players in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld when they don’t perform, too.

The Belgian duo are in a similar boat to their teammate because their own deals are due to expire next summer, and therefore they shouldn’t be treated any differently even if perhaps there is a little less competition for the centre-back berths.

As things stand the north London outfit will lose them either in January for a fee or next summer for nothing, and therefore their manager should be looking to the future rather than sticking with them when theyare below-par.

He does have Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth to call upon when needed, and he shouldn’t be afraid to blood both of those for the good of the future of the club if Alderweireld and Vertonghen aren’t up to scratch.

There has been signs of that as well with the latter not great and giving away an uncharacteristically cheap penalty in the draw with Olympiacos as Spurs crumbled having taken a 2-0 lead, while the former struggled to deal with the pace of Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes in the opening 45 minutes at the weekend.

If Pochettino wants the respect of his players and the fans, he shouldn’t be treating those two players any differently to Eriksen if their below-par displays continue.

Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi finally fires back at Twitter critics

[ad_pod ]Shkodran Mustafi may well be the biggest scapegoat in English football at the moment. That isn’t to say he isn’t a terrible defender, because as any self-respecting football fan would tell you – he is.However, sometimes even the most out of form players can perform quite well, but it pains any Arsenal fans to give him any praise.Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 on Tuesday evening, and even though the Gunners kept a clean sheet in that game, fans were still hesitant to give Mustafi any praise.

One fan was so unwilling to compliment the German that he had a dig at the fact that Arsenal have kept clean sheets in both games that the centre-back has started this term.

The 27-year-old sarcastically apologised for his good performances and replied with an unimpressed emoji.

You have to feel for Mustafi. The constant abuse he’s had from his own fanbase over the past few months is clearly getting to him, and hopefully for his sake the clean sheets continue.

Man Utd signing Real Madrid starlet Martin Odegaard would be a major coup

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Manchester United are watching Martin Odegaard, but face stiff competition for his signature from Premier Legaue rivals.

What’s the word?

The Norway international has stolen the show whilst on loan at Real Sociedad, scoring two goals and providing a further two assists after just seven appearances in La Liga.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The Sun claim the likes of United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are all keeping an eye on developments, and believe an offer in the region of £25m could be enough to land him – as long as parent club Real Madrid want to sell him.

Creativity

Having burst onto the scene at just 15-years-old, Odegaard has fallen off the radar in recent years. A high-profile move to Madrid hasn’t quite worked out, with the midfielder spending several seasons out on loan. It is only now in his spell at Sociedad that he appears to be finding his feet again. The 20-year-old is showing signs of delivering on the promise that marked his early rise, and has been one of the chief creators in the Spanish first division.

The Norwegian has averaged 3.3 key passes and 2.6 dribbles per game in La Liga this season, and it is understandable why United are reported to have scouts watching him. The Red Devils have been lacklustre in attack, failing to score more than one goal in a league game since the 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea in the opening contest of the Premier League campaign.

Odegaard would undoubtedly help to rectify that. Forwards require service to score goals, and the 20-year-old is proving himself to be a reliable architect of them. And still at such a young age, the room for growth is incredible, with former Netherlands boss Dick Advocaat hailing the starlet’s abilities.

“He is an exceptional talent, a gift from God. Really a very nice to watch. You think: ‘he won’t succeed’, but then he makes another move and he is free. Those are players who can decide matches for you.”

The midfielder’s former teammate at Dutch side Vitesse, Bryan Linssen, also paid a glowing tribute of Odegaard’s talent after a particularly impressive performance.

“I just sat on the bench with Tim Matavz. He turns around and says: ‘He’s unbelievable’. He’s just terribly good. He’s unstoppable, it’s bizarre.”

More than anything, the Norway international comes with a glittering array of believers in his talent. United simply must fend off the competition, and take action on their reported scouting trips.

Everton defender Djibril Sidibe has a golden opportunity amid Coleman suspension

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Seamus Coleman was sent off for a second yellow card on the 56th minute against Burnley last weekend, which forced Marco Silva to bring on back-up right-back Djibril Sidibe during the second half.

The Frenchman joined Everton this summer on a season-long loan from AS Monaco but has had to settle for a place on the bench so far, other than two Carabao Cup fixtures where he started.

Upon entering the fray for his first-ever Premier League outing, Sidibe was also booked towards the end of the match. However, with Coleman suspended, now is his time to show Silva that he is the main man for the Toffees at right-back.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

In Ligue 1 last season, Sidibe provided two assists in 27 appearances – the same amount as the Irishman in the Premier League – and after averaging 3.3 tackles per game in the Champions League, the 27-year-old could prove to be a positive addition both defensively and creativity.

As Coleman’s dismissal came in the form of two yellow cards, the Everton regular will miss just the one game against West Ham United, which further justifies the importance for Sidibe in that game. It may be a one-shot take for the former Lille defender, and should he impress, a spot as the Toffees’ main right-back may well be on the cards.

This is because Coleman’s form has indeed been questionable so far, being part of a defence that has conceded 13 goals in eight games. However, the 30-year-old does have the one assist to his name and has averaged 3.3 dribbles each match thus far. Although, his topsy-turvy start may allow Sidibe to take his spot in the side should the Frenchman stand out against West Ham.

The last time the Monaco loanee started for his new team, he achieved a 7/10 rating for his display against Sheffield Wednesday, which may have already given Silva some food for thought in the full-back slot. With a solid performance against West Ham, Coleman may find himself missing even more action, and quite frankly, he couldn’t have chosen a much worse time to get himself a suspension as now Sidibe has a golden opportunity to snatch his place.

Leeds’ official Twitter account publicly criticises refereeing decision

Leeds United lost to Millwall this weekend in what has to be described as a disappointing result for the Whites. The game was turned on its head early on as Gaetano Berardi was sent off for giving away a penalty, which was duly dispatched by Jed Wallace to put the London club 1-0 up.Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It was an uphill battle from there on out, and Leeds eventually lost 2-1.

The Whites have every right to feel aggrieved by the result, as on second viewing it looks as if Berardi didn’t actually commit the foul that led to his red card and Millwall’s first goal.

The club haven’t been coy about their feelings on the situation either. The official Twitter account made it very clear that they weren’t happy with the decision.

Rather than issuing a statement saying that they’re going to appeal the red card, the club instead tweeted out a video of the incident and said that they’ll be dealing with it on Monday, with a suggestive eyes emoji for good measure.

This is quite rare behaviour from an official club account, considering the typical statements usually given after a decision has already been made, but the Whites haven’t held back after the controversial moment that may well have cost them three points.

Liverpool fans agree with Jame Carragher’s views on Sadio Mane

A number of Liverpool fans have strongly agreed with their former captain Jamie Carragher’s views on current Reds attacker Sadio Mane.

In an interview published on Liverpool’s official website, Carragher revealed that Mane was his “favourite player” at the club, in addition to claiming that the Senegal international is now one of the best attackers in the world.

Mane scored a stunning 22 Premier League goals during the 2018-19 campaign, whilst he has also started the new season in fine fashion.

Indeed, the former Southampton winger has eight goals and two assists in 11 outings for Jurgen Klopp’s side since the new campaign started in August.

Carragher gushed over the versatile attacker in an interview for Liverpool’s website.

He said: “Even after the first couple of games, I said Mane, probably along with Raheem Sterling, was possibly the best left winger in the world.

“I absolutely love him, he’s my favourite player at the club. He’s brilliant, he’s always got a smile on his face, always there, always gets knocked about, gets goals, setting others up.

“He’s the one who came in at the very start under Klopp, his first real big signing, and I think ever since then he’s just been getting better and better. He’s just a machine.”

And it would be fair to say that the Merseyside club’s fans are in full agreement with the pundit when it comes to the Senegalese.

Everton’s Marco Silva could be next manager to be sacked, Mark Ogden suggests

While the footballing world focuses on the troubles in Manchester, it’s worth noting that Everton are suffering just as bad, if not worse, under Marco Silva. The 42-year-old is under mounting pressure after a disastrous run of four Premier League dropped them into the relegation zone.Everton billionaire majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri first invested in the club in February 2016 and increased his stake two years later from 49.9 per cent to 68.6 per in September 2018.According to Transfermarkt’s estimations, the Toffees have spent almost half a billion on transfers (£457.92m). Silva was responsible for approximately £198m of that since being appointed in June 2018. Everton’s highest finish in the previous three years is seventh.Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

There’s only so long that mediocrity can be accepted, and only so many chances that can be handed out, before executive decisions need to be made – and like a cat sitting precariously on its eighth life, Silva’s ninth, against West Ham United, may well be his last.

Mark Ogden, a senior writer at ESPN, told BBC 5 Live Sport: “Everton are struggling big time – I think Silva’s under more pressure than most.

“I think he could be the next one to go, actually.”

Crystal Palace: Patrick van Aanholt must be at his best vs Nicolas Pepe on Sunday

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Crystal Palace make the short trip across London this Sunday to take on Arsenal in a derby affair at the Emirates.

Interestingly, the Eagles sit just one point behind the Gunners going into this game.

Roy Hodgson’s men have been in good form so far this term, winning four and drawing two of their nine games – the south Londoners have also only lost once in five home games, which came against champions Manchester City.

Unai Emery’s side suffered an embarrassing 1-0 loss to Sheffield United last time out in the league, so they will be hoping to get back on track – one man will be crucial to helping them do that.

Who is it?

Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivory Coast international has struggled since his £72m move from Lille back in the summer.

An international teammate of Wilfried Zaha, Pepe has scored just one league goal – coming from the penalty spot against Aston Villa – while he missed a sitter in the aforementioned 1-0 loss to Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old has been mocked by Tottenham fans on Twitter for his underwhelming start, but he is still a tricky player to deal with and it does feel as if a goal from open play is imminent.

Pepe averages an impressive 3.3 dribbles per game in the Premier League, as well as 2.7 shots per game – he scored 22 Ligue 1 goals last season, so there is clearly a player in there.

Who must keep tabs on him?

Eagles left-back Patrick van Aanholt looks likely to be tasked with stopping Pepe, seeing as the Ivorian has lined up on the right flank five times this term.

The Dutchman is somewhat suspect from a defensive aspect – a sentiment echoed by his former coaches Sam Allardyce and Gus Poyet – and his stats provide cause for concern.

Van Aanholt has scored twice in nine league games this season, but averages just 1.1 tackles per game and 1.7 interceptions per game – when you see that his teammate at right-back Joel Ward averages 2.6 tackles and 2.1 interceptions, you could argue that the former Sunderland man isn’t pulling his weight defensively.

Quite simply, Palace’s No.3 has to keep his wits about him when coming up against Pepe. Get caught too far up the pitch or out of position and the former Ligue 1 star may use this as his breakout performance.
