Newcastle confident of signing James Tarkowski

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s pursuit of Burnley defender James Tarkowski…

What’s the talk?

According to The Northern Echo, Magpies officials are confident of sealing the January signing of the Clarets centre-back.

The report claims that Burnley have conceded that he will not extend his current contract, which expires at the end of the season, and that could duly see the club cash in on him in the next transfer window.

Fans would be delighted

Newcastle fans will surely be ecstatic with this update as it appears to suggest there is a strong chance that the £70k-per-week colossus ends up at St James’ Park in January.

Officials are confident of a move being wrapped up in the winter window and his contract situation at Burnley is promising for the Magpies.

The Clarets run the risk of losing him for nothing at the end of the season if they do not sell him in January and that could play right into Newcastle’s hands. It could also mean that the Tynesiders are able to land a cut-price deal for the defender, as Burnley do not have the backing of a long-term contract to reasonably demand a huge figure in return for his services.

Newcastle fans will also be delighted with this news as the English defender is an experienced, proven player at Premier League level and could be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Tony Philliskirk, former Head of Academy at Oldham, previously hailed Tarkowski in an interview with The Athletic as he said: “He became the main man on defensive and attacking set pieces, that as a player makes you think you are an integral part of the team.

“He became that because of his level of performance. He was humble and never got ahead of himself. His confidence increased and he became a leader which we discussed with him, organising those in front of him.”

The 29-year-old has played 171 Premier League games for Burnley and averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 7.02 last season. Since the start of the 2017/18 campaign, he has never averaged a score lower than 7.00 in the top flight, showing how remarkably consistent he has been for the Clarets over the past few years.

Also, it’s worth considering that no Newcastle centre-back has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.49 for the current campaign, whereas Tarkowski is currently clocking 7.17.

Therefore, he seems to have the ability to come in and be a solid defender for Newcastle, as he has proven his quality over the course of a number of years at Burnley. He has been able to consistently perform to a high level in the Premier League, and the Toon Army could love to see a player with his experience and pedigree come through the door in January.

West Ham linked with Vitor Oliveira move

West Ham are reportedly interested in signing Braga youngster Vitor Oliveira, but they face competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham for his signature.

The Lowdown: Oliveira an emerging talent

The 21-year-old is an exciting young prospect in Portugal, scoring once in two Primera Liga starts so far this season. Also known as Vitinha (not the same one who played for Wolves last season), he struck four goals in Braga’s 6-0 hammering of Santa Clara at the weekend in the Taca de Portugal.

Oliveira also averaged a 90.9% pass completion rate in his only Europa League appearance in 2021/22 to date, having three shots in that game.

The Portuguese starlet is being linked with a move to England, with West Ham seemingly in the mix to sign him.

The Latest: West Ham keen on move

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], both West Ham and Spurs are keen on acquiring the Braga attacker’s signature.

The report claimed that the pair are ‘ready to battle’ to sign Oliveira, although it isn’t specified whether the transfer could happen in January or next summer.

The Verdict: Added squad depth

While Oliveira wouldn’t necessarily come in as a regular starter for West Ham, he is someone who could be a solid backup for Michail Antonio from January onwards.

There may be times when the Jamaica international, who has started 14 of the Irons’ 16 Premier League and Europa League games so far this term, needs to be given a rest as the campaign progresses, at which point the 21-year-old Portuguese gem could fill in and prove his worth.

The fact that he has scored eight goals in just 11 Braga appearances overall suggests that he could be ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

Man Utd learn Tchouameni’s price tag

Manchester United have now learned the price of Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, with the January transfer window fast approaching.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport (as relayed by the Daily Mirror), United will need to splash out between €45m and €50m (£38.5m and £42.5m) if they are to land highly-rated 21-year-old.

However, the Red Devils are set to face a battle to secure Tchouameni’s services over the coming months, with Serie A giants Juventus and European champions Chelsea also credited with an interest in his services.

Murtough could end Utd’s midfielder hunt

By sanctioning a move for Tchouameni over the coming months, football director John Murtough could solve United’s defensive midfield woes that have plagued the club over the last few years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has often opted for a double pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay throughout his two-and-a-half-year reign, but the duo both prefer more advanced roles have been exposed in their makeshift positions on numerous occasions.

As a result, several potential targets have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but with the likes of Declan Rice and Wilfried Ndidi set to command astronomical fees, Tchouameni has emerged as a viable alternative.

His domineering displays in the centre of the pitch have caught the eye of several impressed onlookers over the last 18 months, with current Monaco teammate Cesc Fabregas amongst his admirers.

“He has the potential to be a complete midfield player,” the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea maestro wrote on Twitter. And now his compatriot and United star Paul Pogba has also lauded his talents.

“He’s not a boy; he’s a man. It’s a pleasure to play next to him; he provides a lot, plenty of energy, technical quality and extraordinary physicality. I hope to play plenty of games together and always be on his side,” the World Cup winner said.

Tchouameni got the ideal opportunity to show just how effective his partnership with Pogba could be in Manchester after lining up alongside him during France’s National League final victory over Spain back in October.

The duo worked perfectly in tandem with one another throughout the 90 minutes, with the United star enjoying the attacking freedom that his more disciplined and defensive-minded colleague allowed him.

Whether Pogba will be at United next season remains to be seen, but Tchouameni’s mature display was evidence that he has the potential to become the holding midfielder that Solskjaer so desperately craves.

Rangers: Bacuna was star man vs Ross County

Rangers made it ten goals scored in two Premiership matches as they beat Ross County 4-2 at Ibrox Sunday afternoon.

They thrashed Motherwell 6-1 last weekend, with Fashion Sakala scoring a hat-trick, although a 1-1 draw with Brondby in the Europa League was sandwiched in between.

Ryan Kent scored a sensational long-distance goal to mark his return, with Joe Aribo, Juninho Bacuna and an own goal from Alex Lacovitti securing the points for the Gers.

Kent made his first start for the club since the 19th of September and dazzled with his stunning strike. He picked the ball up on the left flank and cut inside before unleashing a dipping, powerful, shot past the County goalkeeper, to put Rangers 2-1 up at the time and made Ibrox bounce.

The real star of the show, however, was summer signing Juninho Bacuna as he ran the game from central midfield and was pivotal to the result.

Defensively, he put a shift in for Gerrard’s side. Per SofaScore, he won seven individual duels in the match, whilst also making three tackles. He won six of his 11 ground battles and one of two in the air, and was not dribbled past a single time in the game. This shows that he was reliable defensively and did not allow himself to be a liability in the middle of the park.

On the ball, he was exceptional. He scored his first goal for the club as he picked up possession from Joe Aribo and cut inside onto his right foot to fire a strike into the roof of the net from the edge of the box, whilst he was also credited with the assist for Kent’s wonder goal. The midfielder also completed 86% of his passes as he had a whopping 86 touches of the ball and won three fouls for the team, to show off the overall level of his performance in possession.

Therefore, the £17k-per-week dynamo was the real star of the show for the Gers, as Kent did not create a single chance and only won two duels. Gerrard will surely be delighted by his balanced display in midfield as he was able to merge defensive nous with creativity and quality on the ball in the final third. Hopefully, he will now be able to show it on a consistent basis and prove to be a shrewd signing by Ross Wilson.

Leeds: Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton doubts for Leicester

Leeds United could be without both Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton against Leicester City this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Leeds’ injury woes

The Whites have had plenty of injury issues to deal with this season and will definitely continue to be without Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Robin Koch against The Foxes.

Bamford and Ayling have missed the last seven games with ankle and knee injuries respectively, whereas Koch has been absent with a pubis problem which has kept him out since the opening weekend.

Firpo returned from injury for the Under-23’s at the end of October and Shackleton hobbled off against Norwich last weekend, and it now seems as if the pair may also miss the Elland Road clash.

The Latest: Bielsa’s comments

In Bielsa’s pre-match press conference on Friday, reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post, cited by MOT Leeds News, he gave an update on the full-back duo.

The Argentine admitted he would have a ‘clearer vision’ on the weekend, however, with Bielsa so up front when it comes to injuries, it appears as if the pair may miss the match against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Verdict: Drameh’s full Premier League debut?

Cody Drameh has been thrown into the first-team fold as a result of Leeds’ defensive injuries, making his first start for the club in the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

He then replaced Shackleton against Norwich last weekend, so if Shackleton, described as ‘important’ by Bielsa, fails to make it, the 19-year-old could be in line for a full Premier League debut.

If Firpo, who was hailed as ‘incredibly fit’, misses out again, then Bielsa may have no choice but to stick with Stuart Dallas at left-back instead of using the Northern Irishman in midfield.

New Zealand not keen on SPL

Justin Vaughan says NZC would prefer the ICC’s post-2012 FTP over a proposed Twenty20 Southern Premier League

Cricinfo staff27-Jun-2009Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), has said that his board would prefer the ICC’s post-2012 Future Tours Programme (FTP) over a proposed Twenty20 Southern Premier League (SPL) along with Australia and South Africa. Vaughan suggested that the ICC’s bilateral engagement schedule was more financially rewarding for New Zealand than the SPL.”I don’t want to put a full stop on it and say it won’t happen but if you want to have an IPL, Champions League, SPL and bi-lateral tours, something has to give,” Vaughan told the . “In its current state, the FTP looks very attractive to us, so it would be of considerable financial sacrifice to us to try to carve out an SPL. The FTP is not locked in yet, so it is difficult to make a definitive statement.”NZC commercial manager Peter Dwan said if the FTP did allow for the SPL to be held in October then Australia, South Africa and New Zealand would have to reduce their international commitments. “Even so, you can have all the desire in the world to make it [the SPL] happen but it might not be feasible under the new programme. The FTP will have a significant knock-on effect,” Dwan said. The SPL, involving franchises from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, was proposed last year and was due to kick-off in 2011 but media reports have subsequently claimed that New Zealand will not be fielding any franchises or hosting games. The current FTP lapses into 2012 and there have been some, like Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations chief executive Tim May, who have said the ICC and its members should rework the FTP to reduce international fixtures and create windows for domestic events such as IPL, which involves international players.

Sunderland dealt Gooch injury blow

Sunderland have been dealt a blow regarding the fitness of Lynden Gooch ahead of their upcoming League One fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Sunderland Echo, Lee Johnson revealed that the Black Cats winger, who missed Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers due to a foot injury, looks likely to once again be unavailable for selection for the visit of Cheltenham Town this Tuesday.

Speaking about the current condition of the 25-year-old, Johnson said: “I don’t think it’s that serious. He picked up a knock in training before the Fleetwood game on the top of the foot. More than likely that’s been deferred to the bottom of the foot.

“It’s just started to cause him a bit of a problem. I would expect him to be out for Tuesday night, and then potentially to be back for Saturday or then Lincoln in the Papa John’s on Tuesday.”

Johnson will be gutted

While Johnson is not exactly short of options in the wide attacking areas of his squad, with the likes of Aiden McGeady, Aiden O’Brien, Leon Dajaku, Nathan Broadhead, Benjamin Mbunga Kimpioka all capable of operating from either flank, the continued absence of Gooch will undoubtedly have left the 40-year-old gutted.

Indeed, the USA international appears to be an important part of the manager’s plans this season, with the winger starting all seven of the League One fixtures he has been available for.

Having said this, with Gooch having failed to hit the back of the net so far this season, as well as providing his teammates with just one assist, perhaps the 25-year-old’s injury will allow for one of the Sunderland supporting cast to stake a claim for a regular starting spot in Johnson’s side.

Either way, the injury to Gooch will have come as a blow to the Mackems boss, who will certainly be hoping his side can continue their fantastic early-season form with a win over the Robins on Tuesday.

Bruno Fernandes excelled for Portugal

Manchester United made a solid start to the new Premier League campaign, picking up seven points from a possible nine before the international break, and several of their top performers have continued to shine for their countries on international duty.

Summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo broke the men’s international goalscoring record with a fabulous brace against the Republic of Ireland, while Jesse Lingard notched up two goals and an assist in an impressive display against Andorra.

However, both were arguably outperformed by Bruno Fernandes after the 27-year-old magician fired his nation to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifying fixture.

The Portuguese ace set up Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva for his nation’s opening goal in their Group A encounter after just 26 minutes and continued to be at the heart of proceedings for the remainder of the night.

As per SofaScore, Fernandes received a match rating of 9 out of 10, the highest total received by anyone on the pitch in the Baku Olympic Stadium.

And when taking a look at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. He made a whopping six key passes for his teammates during the 90 minutes, created two big chances and had two shots on target.

The United maestro also recorded a passing accuracy of 80%, pulled off two successful dribbles and had a whopping 110 touches, highlighting his importance to Fernando Santos’ side.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his talismanic attacker can bring this sort of form back to Old Trafford over the weekend, with Newcastle United the next opponents to visit the Theatre of Dreams.
