Preview: Newcastle vs Leicester

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side host Leicester City at St. James’ Park in the 14:15 kick-off this afternoon, with the Magpies looking to continue their recent ascent up the Premier League table against a similarly resurgent Foxes outfit.

Indeed, despite losing three of their last five league outings, Newcastle have picked up an incredibly impressive 23 points over their 12 top-flight fixtures in 2022 – a return only bettered by Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, following an extremely poor first half of the season, Leicester are currently on a run of five games without defeat in all competitions, with three of these coming as victories.

As such, the encounter between the two sides this afternoon certainly promises to be an exciting affair, with a victory for the Geordies potentially closing the gap to their ninth-placed opponents to just three points.

So, will Howe make any changes to the side that started the 1-0 win over Wolves last time out? Here’s how we think Newcastle could line up against Leicester, along with the latest team and injury news…

With BBC Sport recently reporting that Ryan Fraser looks set to miss out after picking up a hamstring injury last time out, as well as revealing that Joe Willock could be in line for a return to the XI despite nursing an ongoing knee issue, we predict that Howe will make two changes to the team that started against Wolves.

The back five remains unchanged, with Martin Dubravka starting between the sticks, while Matt Targett, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth make up the Magpies’ defensive quartet.

In the middle of the park, the £80k-per-week Joelinton – who journalist Aaron Stokes dubbed an “absolute monster” – makes way for the returning £25m summer signing Willock – who Steve Bruce dubbed a “remarkable” talent – with Jonjo Shelvey and Bruno Guimaraes keeping their starting berths.

In attack, Allan Saint-Maximin once again starts on the left and Chris Wood is deployed up top, while the second change comes on the right flank – with the injured Fraser being replaced by Paraguay international Miguel Almiron.

Fantastic Foo gives Guyana title in thriller

Jonathan Foo, the 19 year-old lower-order discovery of Chinese descent exploded in sensational fashion as wickets clattered at the other end to steal a one-wicket victory for Guyana in the Caribbean T20 final

The Bulletin by Nitin Sundar01-Aug-2010

It was a finish befitting a big final on a night when both teams displayed nerves befitting a big final. In the end, it came down to one man who held his nerve under pressure. Jonathan Foo, the 19-year-old Guyanese discovery of Chinese descent, exploded sensationally as wickets clattered at the other end to steal victory, and a berth in the Champions League, from Barbados’ grasp.Foo arrived with his side’s hopes all but dashed. The Bajan spinners, led by Ashley Nurse, had choked Guyana’s batting. Their last four batsmen needed 59 off the last five overs but Lennox Cush and Esuan Crandon fell in quick succession. Barbados were already celebrating when Foo marked his guard for one final onslaught: Nurse was lofted over long-off but the smiles were still on the Bajan faces. Dwayne Smith was worked for fours to third man and square leg in the 18th over, but surely Guyana could not pull this off from here? Not after they lost their ninth wicket, Nurse’s fifth, with 26 required off 11.Foo responded by launching Nurse for another huge six over long-off. Barbados’ smiles were replaced by frowns now. Then came the defining moment: Nurse delivered a low full toss on leg stump, Foo smashed it high in the direction of deep midwicket where Larry Babb readied himself to take the catch that would have given Barbados the title. It was not to be – he palmed it over the ropes. The force was with Foo and Barbados had just dropped the Caribbean T20.With 11 to get off the last over, Foo smashed Javon Searles through point for two fours, reminiscent of Lance Klusener’s boundaries in World Cup semi-final. Unlike at Edgbaston, though, Foo had not come this far to return disappointed. More importantly, he had for company a calm No 11. Foo tapped a single to mid-on, giving Devendra Bishoo strike with two required off two. Searles aimed a yorker at off stump and did not miss by much, Bishoo squeezed it out to cover for one, but Sulieman Benn fumbled a regulation stop to allow a second. Foo charged back to the non-striker’s end and threw his arms aloft. The Guyanese supporters invaded the field and surrounded their hero, while Ryan Hinds, the Barbados captain, was down on the ground holding his head in despair. The dramatic denouement to the chase of 135 was preceded by a sluggish and nervy start. Guyana’s approach was confusing. They did away with the experimental line-up, which worked wonders in the semi-final, and nearly paid the price for being too conservative. Travis Dowlin, who had batted with freedom in that game, played well within himself tonight against bowling that was at best steady. Searles sprayed wides down leg side and over the batsmen’s heads, but Benn was at the batsmen from the start. He trapped Dowlin in the fourth over with an arm ball for 8 off 17 balls. Sewnarine Chattergoon did not fare any better, pottering to 9 off 15 balls before falling in Hinds’ first over. Suddenly Guyana were staring at a required-rate in excess of eight in their last 12 overs – no cause for alarm by Twenty20 standards, but not in these conditions against a determined attack.Runs came in singles until the 12th over when Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine swung Hinds for a four and a six each. Things went awry in the next over though, as Nurse got Sarwan and Christopher Barnwell to hole out. When Hinds took out Deonarine in the 14th over, Guyana had lost half their side with less than half the target achieved. Hurricane Foo, though, was about to ravage Barbados. Both teams had disregarded the conditions at the start of the game: despite the possibility of showers Barbados chose to bat, and despite the bounce and movement on offer, Guyana used offspinner Cush with the new ball. Initially Cush’s lengths were poor and Dale Richards capitalised to kick-start Barbados’ innings. Esuan got sharp movement but repeatedly bowled inswingers down the leg side.In the third over, Cush got Richards to top-edge a full toss to short third man. That brought Jonathan Carter to the crease and just like that Esuan transformed from inconsistent to unplayable. Carter rarely got bat on ball and his early troubles against Esuan set the tone for his entire innings, though, to his credit he did not throw it away. Barnwell struck after the Powerplay with a smart change of pace, foxing Kirk Edwards into an early waft.Carter played and missed often and was guilty of not rotating the strike enough. His momentum was subdued further by a short ball from Barnwell that thudded into his box and had him in strife. Alcindo Holder tried to inject urgency by coming down the track. He picked a couple of boundaries but the ploy did not work against Bishoo, and Holder holed out to deep midwicket in the 15th over. Dwayne Smith also failed under pressure, slogging Bishoo straight to Foo at long on.Barbados desperately needed to finish on a high and they succeeded by stealing 33 runs off the last three overs. Three sixes were struck in that passage of play, including a monster blow from Carlo Morris that nearly landed in the commentary box and a last-ball six over midwicket by Carter. That was after Carter had reached 50 off 60 balls, getting a couple after heaving to cow corner where Foo put him down. Unfortunately for Barbados, it was to be Foo’s only error on the night.

Liverpool start James Milner contract talks

Liverpool and James Milner have commenced talks regarding a new one-year deal for the veteran midfielder, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Milner out of contract

The 36-year-old has enjoyed six-and-a-half memorable years at Anfield so far, having joined on a free transfer from Manchester City back in 2015.

Milner has won the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds, making 274 appearances and being hailed as a “complete football player” by Jurgen Klopp.

The midfielder’s current Liverpool deal expires in the summer, and as of yet, no new contract has been agreed.

The Latest: Romano makes Milner contract claim

However, taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Romano claimed that talks are ‘underway’ regarding a one-year extension for the former England international. The journalist tweeted:

“Liverpool offered James Milner a one-year contract extension. Talks are now underway, as Jurgen Klöpp wants Milner to be part of the team also next season.

“Talks will continue in the coming days/weeks – it’s up to Milner now.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-20/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Does it make sense?

At 36, there is understandable reason to think that Milner should move on in the summer, with the removal of his £150,000-a-week wages potentially helping to free up funds for new signings.

That being said, his vast experience and incredible professionalism mean that having him around could continue to make sense for Klopp, with his presence in the dressing room helping to keep standards high.

Milner would likely have to accept that his minutes will be limited next season if he wants to stay at Anfield, given the depth in Liverpool’s midfield, but the positives arguably outweigh the negatives when it comes to the possibility of him staying put.

Leeds injury update emerges pre-Everton

Leeds United’s injury crisis is showing signs of easing up but Marcelo Bielsa will still be without several key stars this afternoon, including Junior Firpo…

What’s the latest?

The Whites head to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Premier League later today and the Argentine has revealed that the first-choice left-back will not travel.

Speaking to reporters during his pre-game press conference on Friday morning, Bielsa said (via LeedsLive):

“[Kalvin] Phillips, [Liam] Cooper, Firpo and [Patrick] Bamford like in the game against Aston Villa won’t be considered for the game against Everton.”

On Firpo specifically, the 66-year-old added:

“He’s healthy but we’re not going to anticipate his return [against Everton]. He’s going to return next week.”

Big blow

Whilst it is encouraging to hear that the former Barcelona star is close to a return, it is certainly a gutting setback to not have him available for such a crucial game at the foot of the table.

Firpo is Leeds’ only senior left-back and in his absence, utility man Stuart Dallas has had to fill in instead but the side sorely misses his energetic presence in midfield – even more so with Phillips on the treatment table, too.

The 25-year-old had a tough start to the season but really started to evolve into a sturdy and reliable option.

A win over Burnley last month saw supporters hail his performance as his best of the season. He registered five tackles, three clearances and two dribbles during that game, as per WhoScored.

Meanwhile, former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has previously lauded Firpo as ” incredibly fit, quick and strong” and “really athletic” to Football Insider, which makes him an ideal fit for Bielsa and his system.

As such, the Argentinian head coach will be a little worried heading into kickoff as it means he will continue to have to put square pegs in round holes for the time being.

The Toffees will be desperate for a result and they could now target that area of the pitch this afternoon.

Newcastle can replace Gayle with Morelos

The January transfer window is well underway and Newcastle United are being linked with players left, right and centre at the moment.

Eddie Howe’s squad is in desperate need of strengthening, and deals done this month could go a long way to helping them to remain in the Premier League for at least another season.

They are currently 19th in the table and have only won one league game with half of the campaign gone, highlighting the need for reinforcements.

Time to brutally axe Gayle

CBS Sports recently reported that Leicester, Newcastle and Everton are all interested in signing Morelos from Rangers this month.

By bringing the Colombian to St James’ Park, Howe could brutally axe Dwight Gayle from the club and sell him in the coming weeks. The former Crystal Palace man is reportedly one of the players the Magpies are willing to offload, and the prospective arrival of Morelos could allow them to cash in.

He is under contract until 2024 but has only played 27 minutes of Premier League football this season. This suggests that the £40k-per-week dud is not in Howe’s plans, so signing a replacement in the form of Morelos would mean that they can sell him without worrying about their attacking squad depth.

The Rangers marksman could come in and add plenty of goals to the Magpies. He has proven his quality for the Scottish champions over the years, with 107 goals in 211 games north of the border.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic previously, an ex-Scottish Premiership defender lauded the striker’s strength, saying: “When he goes to shield the ball it’s so difficult. His body strength and ball control are very good, so he makes it very difficult for you. He is deceptive with his physical attributes, but what I’d say he’s best at is when the ball is played up to him. He lets you think that you can nip in front of him and then his timing to put his body in and spin you is excellent.”

Another player added: “He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space.”

These testimonies highlight what Morelos could bring to Newcastle aside from his goalscoring. He has the physical strength and positional intelligence to cause constant problems for opposition defenders, which means that he could open up space for his teammates even when he is not scoring himself. Coupled with his scoring record, that is why he could be an excellent signing.

The Colombian could therefore be the perfect replacement for Gayle and improve the Magpies’ options at the top end of the pitch. It would then be down to the club to find a new employer for the 32-year-old, whether that comes this month or in the summer.

Albie Morkel regains some of his powers

Albie Morkel has been living on reputation rather than results over the last year of international cricket

Andrew McGlashan at Kensington Oval06-May-2010Albie Morkel has been living on reputation rather than results over the last year of international cricket. Whenever he walks to the crease there is an expectation of a barrage of sixes, but recently he has struggled to justify the hype. However, he picked a good time to find his range again as a thumping 18-ball 40, including five sixes, transformed a workable South Africa total into a more imposing 170 against New Zealand. The straight and midwicket boundaries that Morkel targeted are not huge at the Kensington Oval but he cleared them with ease as New Zealand’s death bowlers couldn’t find their yorkers. He came in slightly earlier than normal when Herschelle Gibbs fell in the 14th over, but saved his major onslaught until Tim Southee bowled the penultimate over and struck three sixes straight down the ground.”We’ve been searching for the right combination and we certainly started a little rusty in this tournament,” Graeme Smith said. “The platform was there for Albie, the guys up front had done a really good job setting up the game. It was nice to back him and to see him play a knock like that was terrific.”Since Morkel made his Test debut against Australia at Cape Town in March 2009 his form for South Africa has taken a plunge, to such an extent that he has been omitted for the one-day leg of the West Indies tour which follows the World Twenty20. He hit a half century in his only Test to date, but since then his lone fifty has come against a weak Zimbabwe attack in Benoni. This innings of 40 is his second-best international effort for 15 months. It was more than due.”It’s nice to perform for your country and I was pleased to come in and play an innings under pressure during a World Cup,” Morkel said. “But I’ve never really felt out of form the whole season so it’s just been about trying to get a start. Once you get a performance you hope for a rolling effect so hopefully this can carry on.”Daniel Vettori knew Morkel’s innings was the crucial phase of the game and it changed the momentum significantly going into New Zealand’s run chase. “It’s a very small ground and when you have a destructive hitter like Albie Morkel it’s a very bad combination if you miss, so those last few overs put us in a bad position,” he said.”It’s the nature of Twenty20 that you can’t get it right every time but there are crucial situations when you have to and this time it was the last four or five overs that cost us. It wasn’t what I expected or what I want and we have to improve pretty quickly.”Morkel had shown glimpses of a return to something closer to his power-packed best with 198 runs at a strike-rate of 151 for Chennai Super Kings during the IPL where he hit more sixes (13) than fours (10). However, it’s at international level, where there is a higher sustained quality than the IPL, where Morkel has to reclaim his standing. It has made for a good 48 hours for the Morkel clan following Morne’s four wickets against Afghanistan. Albie, though, is going through a vital phase of his career. He has always been classed as an allrounder but his bowling has regressed alarmingly. In the opening game of the tournament he was entrusted with the final over against India and was duly dispatched for 19. South Africa lost the match by 14 runs, although it wasn’t all down to Morkel as Rory Kleinveldt was also hammered. He wasn’t afford much respect by Afghanistan, either, who took him for 20 in two overs despite being 33 for 8 when he came onto bowl. His first ball was a powder-puff on off stump which Hamid Hassan launched straight into the Worrell, Weekes and Walcott Stand. Against New Zealand he wasn’t used by Smith until the final over and with 27 needed it would have a mightily poor effort to lose the match, but Morkel’s nerves were still obvious when his first ball was swung away for four.He didn’t approach the crease with much confidence and sent the ball down at gentle medium pace. When the equation came down to 22 off three deliveries the match was safe, but then Nathan McCullum hit a six and Smith’s effort to encourage his bowler was clear. South Africa are well aware of Morkel’s match-winning ability and the balance he adds to the side, but in a format that can be changed with a brief flurry of sixes he is worth having for his batting alone.

Raqibul Hasan quits international cricket

Bangladesh’s plans for the first Test against England have been thrown into disarray after Raqibul Hasan, the 22-year-old middle-order batsman, retired from international cricket on the eve of the series

Bangladesh’s plans for the first Test against England have been thrown into disarray after Raqibul Hasan, the 22-year-old middle-order batsman, retired from international cricket on the eve of the series.Cricinfo understands that Raqibul is angered by his omission from the preliminary 30-man World Twenty20 squad as well as the recent one-day series against England and has decided to make a stand, but there was also a disagreement between the board and the selectors over his original place in the Test squad. He informed his team-mates of his decision on the team bus after practice on Wednesday. “We tried to tell him that it was a bad idea,” a team insider told Cricinfo. “He’s very young and we tried to talk him out of a rash decision. “The board had wanted Raqibul to be dropped for the Tests against England along with Mohammad Ashraful, who was omitted from the squad having also missed the one-day series. However, he impressed for Bangladesh A against England in the warm-up match when he followed his first-innings unbeaten 107 with 51 and was duly named in the Test party.”The selectors were told by the board to drop Raqibul and Ashraful from the Test squad,” a BCB insider told Cricinfo. “The selectors refused to drop Raqibul after he scored a century and a fifty in the warm-up game at Chittagong and Raqibul has returned to Dhaka feeling that his position in the team is compromised.”Raqibul was inked in for a middle-order slot against England, ironically as a replacement for Ashraful, having previously been dropped following a lean series against India in January. He has played seven Tests with a top score of 65 against West Indies and averages 19.14.”He wrote a letter to us this morning, withdrawing himself from the Test series against England. He also announced his retirement from all forms of cricket,” Bangladesh cricket board director Jalal Yunus told AFP. “It has stunned us. He is a brilliant cricketer and played two superb knocks against England just days back. Coach Jamie Siddons and Raqibul’s parents tried to change his mind. But he is adamant.”Cricinfo understands that Jahurul Islam, the uncapped 23-year-old batsman, has been called into the squad following an impressive performance in the National Cricket League final, which finished on Wednesday, where he scored 59 and 117 for Rajshahi Division who took the title against Chittagong Division.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Nakamba update

Aston Villa midfielder Marevlous Nakamba may miss the rest of the season through injury.

That’s according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, which, as to be expected, has had plenty of Villa fans talking on social media.

Nakamba had started every game under Steven Gerrard prior to going off against Liverpool with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old was also set to represent Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year, however, it seems as if he may be out for the rest of the current campaign.

Evans shared news on Tuesday afternoon, suggesting Villa will decide over the next 48 hours if the defensive midfielder requires surgery on the problem. As a result of Nakamba’s injury, Villa will look to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

Villa fans react

This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to Evans’ Twitter post regarding Nakamba, with one labelling it as a ‘massive shame’.
