Tendulkar steps down as Mumbai Indians captain

Sachin Tendulkar has stepped down as Mumbai Indians captain ahead of the IPL 2012 season-opener against Chennai. Harbhajan Singh, who was Tendulkar’s deputy, has been appointed captain by the franchise after Tendulkar cited needing a “break” in leadership duties as the reason.”Sachin Tendulkar, in discussion with the management of Mumbai Indians, has decided to hand over the responsibilities of captaining Mumbai Indians in season five of the IPL to ace offspinner Harbhajan Singh,” a media release from the franchise stated.Tendulkar said that he had discussed the matter with the owners of the franchise before taking the decision. “At this point of time, I feel I need a break from the responsibility of captaincy of the Mumbai Indians,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying in the release. “After due consideration, I discussed my intention to hand over the captaincy of the team to Harbhajan Singh, with Mukesh [Ambani] and Nita.”In the four years Tendulkar was at helm, the best result Mumbai achieved was in the 2010 edition of the tournament, when they finished as runners-up to Chennai Super Kings.Harbhajan, who led Mumbai to the Champions League T20 title last year, was the automatic choice to take over the leadership mantle. Incidentally, Tendulkar sat on the bench through that victorious campaign, as he was recuperating from a toe injury he picked up during the England tour last August.Though Harbhajan’s bowling form has been patchy, he has found success as a captain. After leading Mumbai Indians to the Champions League title, he led the India Green team in the Challenger Trophy, top-scoring for his side in the tied final and picking up 3 for 37. Recently, he led Punjab Twenty20 side to the final of Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy, which they lost to Baroda.

Kochi IPL players to be in 2012 auction

The player auction for the 2012 IPL will be held in late January or early February and the teams will have an additional salary cap of $2 million, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The players from the Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise, which was terminated earlier this year, will be part of the auction.According to a formal communication from the IPL Governing Council, which met earlier today in Chennai, the squad sizes for each team have been increased from 30 to 33, with eleven foreign players per squad, up one from the previous limit of 10. However, the number of foreign players that can be part of the final XI will remain at four. The teams will play their games on a home-and-away basis, so each of the nine teams will play 16 games as opposed to 14 in 2011. The changes mean the IPL reverts back to its original format, where all the teams played each other twice, a format that the franchises have always preferred. There were no changes to the play-off format. The two finalists, Chennai and Bangalore, will host the play-offs in 2012.The decision to include the Kochi players in the player auction effectively means the board has decided to stick with nine teams for the time being. The BCCI voted to terminate the Kochi franchise at its annual general meeting in September. At the time board president N Srinivasan said that the governing council would decide on whether to issue a tender for a 10th franchise.Should any of the Kochi players fail to attract the bid, their salaries will be covered by the IPL through the franchise’s bank guarantee worth Rs 156 crores that has been encashed by the BCCI. Among the leading players that will be part of the auction are Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum, Mahela Jayawardene and Ravindra Jadeja. An official of one of the franchises was satisfied with the format for the 2012 season but not with the decision to increase squad size. “After Kochi went, the home-and-away format is a logical step,” the official told ESPNcricinfo. “But 33 players is too much. Even 30 were too many. What they are trying to do is to ensure that the Kochi players get hired. If they are not hired, then the IPL has to pay for them. So they are trying to push that cost to the franchises by saying, ‘Some you hire and some we’ll hire’. Otherwise it makes no sense to increase the foreign players’ count to 11. Even ten was too many as you are only playing four.”The governing council also decided that the first window for trading players will be between December 15 and January 20, with a shorter window after the auction. There is no financial cap on trading, though each franchise can add only a maximum of four players to their squad through trading. In other IPL news, Chris Gayle is likely to stay with Royal Challengers Bangalore as a rule that allows the team which hired the replacement player to have the first right over him has been retained. Gayle transformed Royal Challengers’ fortunes after being brought in following Australia fast bowler Dirk Nannes’ injury early in the 2011 season, steering the team to the finals. Also, in a jolt to the IPL, MAXX Mobile, the sponsors for the strategic timeout, have decided to terminate their three-year contract which was signed in 2010. The governing council deliberated on possible action against the company in case it does not compensate the IPL for exiting the contract ahead of the expiry date.

Top order puts Zimbabwe in command

Zimbabwe’s top four ensured that their return to Test cricket was impressive as they achieved a balance between aggression and caution

The partnership of 102 between Tino Mawayo and Vusi Sibanda is Zimbabwe’s 11th century partnership for the first wicket in Tests, and their first since January 2002.

Sibanda’s 78 is his maiden Test fifty, and by far his highest score – he had scored 48 runs in his previous six innings put together.

Hamilton Masakadza’s unbeaten 88 is his second-highest Test score in 31 innings – he needs 31 more to equal his best.

It’s only the eighth time in Zimbabwe’s Test history that their No.4 batsman has come to the crease with more than 150 runs on the board.

The average opening stand in Tests against Bangladesh is 53.10, which is the highest among all teams.

Zimbabwe’s top four ensured that their return to Test cricket was impressive as they achieved a balance between aggression and caution. Hamilton Masakadza scored a fluent, unbeaten 88 after debutant Tino Mawoyo and Vusi Sibanda had put on a century first-wicket stand and laid a solid base for the rest to build on.Bangladesh’s bowlers were inconsistent throughout the day, struggled with their lines and lengths and gave the batsmen the luxury of choosing which deliveries to leave and which to play. As a unit, they posed little threat to the batsmen, with the seam bowlers and the left-arm spinners failing to be penetrative and losing motivation as a result.Mawoyo had a few nerves at the start, which were exposed when he was almost run out in a moment of impulsion; but he settled soon after and showed remarkable poise and patience in his innings. His first runs came with a classy upper cut and a pair of delicious drives. Sibanda took a little longer to settle in but once he did, and was able to put his drive on display, he was almost unstoppable. The Zimbabwe openers were helped by the fact that Bangladesh’s seamers failed to exploit the movement on offer early on.Shafiul Islam bowled with discipline up front and maintained a challenging length but his new-ball partner Robiul Islam was often too short. The only wicket-taker of the innings, Rubel Hossain, got some movement but was unable to use it to claim any scalps, his two strikes coming from wayward shots rather than attacking bowling.Bangladesh turned to spin in the 13th over with Shakib bringing himself on and getting a surprising amount of turn. Zimbabwe were wary of the threat of left-arm spin and handled him with caution, being careful not to go forward too much. They smothered the spin of both Shakib and Abdur Razzak and in so doing crafted a base from which to push on. By the time lunch was approaching, they had offered the bowlers no chances and only a lapse in concentration caused Mawoyo to chase a short and wide ball. When he was caught at deep backward point, he ended a partnership that, in some ways, mirrored the century first-wicket stand of Kevin Arnott and Grant Flower in Zimbabwe’s first Test in 1992, the main difference being that Arnott and Flower took much longer to reach the hundred mark.Bangladesh showed more intent after lunch, with two edges off the bat of Sibanda going the way of second slip, one put down and the other not carrying. They bowled with a little more zip for the first half an hour but as the Zimbabwe batsman got comfortable the bowlers were demoralised. Sibanda’s driving was moving into fifth gear and Masakadza’s strong defence and positive attack presented a combination that was too formidable for Bangladesh. The visitors finally captured another wicket midway through the second session when Sibanda hung his bat out to a short ball and got an edge through to Mushfiqur Rahim.Masakadza was unruffled, illustrating why he is regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s most-improved players. His innings was defined by his drives but he pulled with confidence and also worked the ball well on the leg side. With the ultra-cautious Brendan Taylor at the other end, Masakadza had the freedom to play his shots, which he did not abuse. In his first innings as captain, Taylor was watchful. He slipped up only once, when he slashed hard and was almost caught behind but for the most part he was sedate and happy to play a supporting role. He and Masakadza did a fine job of accumulating runs by taking singles, helped by the poor effort from Bangladesh in the field.Although the point region was well covered, and when the ball was hit there it usually found the fielder, runs were leaked in almost every other part of the field. Misfields were commonplace and as the shadows got longer general disinterest seemed to creep in. Balls that should have been chased with more eagerness were merely ambled after and ones that could have been saved were allowed to go through.Bangladesh took the second new ball as soon as it was on offer but with conditions not as favourable as they were in the morning, they could hardly hope to make use of it. Shafiul had a confident shout for lbw against Taylor in his first over with the new ball but it was given not out. Replays showed that it could have gone over the stumps or down leg. Robiul was again inaccurate and all but wasted the new cherry as the Bangladesh bowlers dragged themselves through the final minutes of play, perhaps weighed down by the many things they will have to work on before the second day.

Petersen century makes Foster pay

A century from skipper Alviro Petersen helped Glamorgan dominate the first day of their County Championship Division Two match against Essex at Cardiff

Alvrio Petersen made the most of being asked to bat first•PA PhotosA century from skipper Alviro Petersen helped Glamorgan dominate the first day of their County Championship Division Two match against Essex at Cardiff.Petersen scored 133 out of Glamorgan’s 313 for 3 after his opposite number James Foster won the toss and decided to put Glamorgan in to bat.The decision was understandable in the overcast and humid morning conditions but Glamorgan could not have expected the opening session to run as smoothly as it did, with Petersen and Gareth Rees reaching lunch with ease at 101 for no loss.Despite winning their last three games and bowling Leicestershire out for 34 last Friday, when David Masters recorded figures of eight for 10 at Garon Park in Southend-on-Sea, Essex failed to produce one chance before lunch.Masters and Maurice Chambers did beat the bat a couple of times in their second spells but it was very much Glamorgan’s morning. The opening pair easily surpassed their previous best opening partnership of 68 against Gloucestershire in May.And their dominance continued with both batsmen completing their half-centuries in the over after lunch. Rees’ came up from 94 balls with six fours and Petersen reached his from 101 balls with seven boundaries.Glamorgan looked certain break their first-wicket record against Essex – Steve James and Hugh Morris’ 199 at Chelmsford in 1996 – but Rees fell victim to the leg-spinner Tom Craddock. Rees was caught behind attempting a scoop shot to leave the home side 184 for one in the 57th over. That was just after Petersen reached his second century for Glamorgan – his first in Wales – from 182 balls with 14 fours. The home side continued to dominate and reached tea at 217 for one from 64 overs. To Essex’s credit, the bowlers did not let Glamorgan score at a fast rate with Masters and Craddock keeping the runs down. But it was Chambers who got the second breakthrough after tea when Petersen feathered one behind. He went for 133 from 228 balls to leave Glamorgan 251 for two in the 76th over.Michael Powell and Will Bragg looked as if they had negotiated the threat of the second new ball but only three overs from the close, Bragg went leg before attempting to turn a ball from Masters into the legside. That forced Glamorgan into employing a nightwatchman – Will Owen, who survived until the close.

Playing for Sri Lanka bigger than IPL – Dilshan

Sri Lanka’s newly appointed captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has said he doesn’t mind leaving the IPL early in order to prepare for the upcoming tour of England. Dilshan is among the 11 Sri Lankan players who have been asked by Sri Lanka Cricket to return by May 5, in order to attend a training camp before leaving for England on May 11.”Personally, I am not unhappy to return early,” said Dilshan, who is on a brief visit to Colombo amid his IPL commitments with Royal Challengers Bangalore. “Playing for my country is more important than playing the IPL. I think everybody selected for the England tour will be happy to come early. We have a new interim coach [Stuart Law] and a new batting coach [Marvan Atapattu]. I am also new as captain. We need to prepare together to build up for the big England tour.”The Indian board, however, said it would ask its Sri Lankan counterpart to reconsider. “According to us, the Sri Lankan players were to stay here till May 21, as they had promised, and the franchises are also under the same impression,” BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said. “But now they want to go back early and it is not appropriate.”Apart from reaffirming his commitment to the national side, Dilshan has also toned down the flashier aspects of his image as he gets ready for captaincy. “Times have changed. I pierced my ear when my daughter cried when her ears were being pierced,” he said. “Now I don’t see a need to wear the earring. It’s the same with my hair. [Streaking it] was fashionable then for me, it is not so now.”Dilshan, however, said he was not planning to tone down his attacking brand of cricket. “I have come this far today because of the way I play my cricket. I don’t see any reason why I should change it. I am an aggressive player and I may apply that aggression to my captaincy as well, depending on the circumstances.”Captaincy is a challenging role for me. It’s a dream come true. I never expected it. I want to give it my best shot. I have played for nearly 12 years. It’s been a very long journey to the top.”Dilshan said he was “lucky” to have two past captains – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene – in the side and was looking forward to playing “good cricket” on the England tour. “We know they [England] are a strong side in their own conditions but we are capable of giving them a good run.”We have an experienced batting line up and the first thing we need to do is to get used to the conditions there. We need to get acclimatised as quick as possible if we are to put up a good contest against England,” he said. The England tour will be Sri Lanka’s first full series after the retirement of offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, but Dilshan was confident his spinners – Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv – would deliver. “We have to look forward to the new bowlers like Suraj Randiv,” he said. “We are giving the opportunity to Suraj to do the job for us.”In the absence of Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s pace attack will be led by Dilhara Fernando, who has played 35 Tests. Chanaka Welegedara and Suranga Lakmal have played eight Tests between them, while fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep and bowling allrounder Thisara Perera are yet to make their Test debuts.”I have the fullest confidence in my fast bowlers. Nuwan Pradeep is playing with me in the same team for Royal Challengers in the IPL and he is the best bowler in the squad.” Dilshan said. “We want to give young fast bowlers a chance if we don’t they’ll never get the experience. We have given the opportunity to the young fast bowlers and I hope they will make use of it.”SLC had initially signed a No Objection Certificate (NOC) with its players allowing them to participate in the IPL until May 20. The tournament carries on until May 28, while the England tour kicks off with a warm-up game on May 14. The BCCI has been in talks with SLC, to convince them to allow their players to extend their IPL participation, but Sri Lanka is unlikely to relent.”The BCCI has asked us to reconsider our decision, but we have not changed our stand,” SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said. “We did sign a no-objection agreement with the players to play in the IPL. But there was no date to return. I am sure the BCCI will understand country must come first before IPL.”

Supreme Court okays auction of IPL broadcast rights

India’s Supreme Court has said the BCCI can continue with the process of auctioning IPL broadcast rights for certain markets for 2011-14

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Mar-2011India’s Supreme Court has said the BCCI can continue with the process of auctioning IPL broadcast rights for certain markets for 2011-14.The board had issued a tender earlier this month offering the rights to distribute IPL matches on television in territories excluding India, South Africa and Australia, among others, as well as the worldwide radio, internet and mobile rights. That decision was contested by World Sport Group (WSG), which bought the global broadcast rights prior to the first IPL and is locked in a legal battle with the board over its decision to cancel their contract last year over allegations of fraud.WSG had objected to the tender on the grounds that it violated the undertakings the board had given to the Bombay High Court and the Indian Supreme Court that it would not sell the rights to a third party until their dispute is resolved. On their part, the BCCI argued that the interim stay granted by the Bombay High Court amounted to enforcing the contract with WSG, since it would have to choose between broadcasting the games through WSG and not broadcasting them at all.According to , the Supreme Court ruled that the tender could proceed and that any money the BCCI made from selling the rights was to be kept in an escrow account, from which WSG could withdraw whatever amount it needed to fulfil its commercial agreements. “Amount shall be kept in a separate account. You (WSG) would take as they require…balance would be there,” said the two-judge bench of Justice RV Raveendran and Justice AK Patnaik. The bids will also not be final until the dispute between the two is resolved. The BCCI had appealed the Bombay High Court’s stay order to the Supreme Court and the court had overruled the stay while continuing to hear the case. In June 2010, the BCCI terminated all its IPL media license agreements with WSG over the payment of the Rs 425 crore-facilitation fee (about US$90m) by the parent company of the tournament’s Indian broadcast partner to WSG. The board claimed it was rightfully owed the money as the rights to the tournament were with the BCCI.

Preview: Newcastle vs Leicester

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side host Leicester City at St. James’ Park in the 14:15 kick-off this afternoon, with the Magpies looking to continue their recent ascent up the Premier League table against a similarly resurgent Foxes outfit.

Indeed, despite losing three of their last five league outings, Newcastle have picked up an incredibly impressive 23 points over their 12 top-flight fixtures in 2022 – a return only bettered by Wolverhampton Wanderers, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Meanwhile, following an extremely poor first half of the season, Leicester are currently on a run of five games without defeat in all competitions, with three of these coming as victories.

As such, the encounter between the two sides this afternoon certainly promises to be an exciting affair, with a victory for the Geordies potentially closing the gap to their ninth-placed opponents to just three points.

So, will Howe make any changes to the side that started the 1-0 win over Wolves last time out? Here’s how we think Newcastle could line up against Leicester, along with the latest team and injury news…

With BBC Sport recently reporting that Ryan Fraser looks set to miss out after picking up a hamstring injury last time out, as well as revealing that Joe Willock could be in line for a return to the XI despite nursing an ongoing knee issue, we predict that Howe will make two changes to the team that started against Wolves.

The back five remains unchanged, with Martin Dubravka starting between the sticks, while Matt Targett, Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth make up the Magpies’ defensive quartet.

In the middle of the park, the £80k-per-week Joelinton – who journalist Aaron Stokes dubbed an “absolute monster” – makes way for the returning £25m summer signing Willock – who Steve Bruce dubbed a “remarkable” talent – with Jonjo Shelvey and Bruno Guimaraes keeping their starting berths.

In attack, Allan Saint-Maximin once again starts on the left and Chris Wood is deployed up top, while the second change comes on the right flank – with the injured Fraser being replaced by Paraguay international Miguel Almiron.

AND in other news: Howe could unearth NUFC’s new Waddle in “technical” 19 y/o gem who’s “caught the eye”
