Crystal Palace: Fans react to Nathan Ferguson update

Crystal Palace will have to pay West Brom just £900,000 for defender Nathan Ferguson following a tribunal, The Athletic report.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace supporters have been sharing their thoughts on the transfer news on social media.

The 21-year-old was set to make the move to Selhurst Park back in January 2020 in a deal worth an initial £8m. However, that fell through due to a failed medical, with Ferguson then joining the club in the summer when his Baggies contract expired.

Ferguson is still yet to play for Palace due to various injury issues but has since returned to light training. It has now been reported that the Eagles will have to hand over just £900,000 to West Brom, with no right of appeal from the Championship side.

Palace fans react

Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam shared the news on Wednesday evening. It didn’t take long for Eagles fans to interact with the news, with one labelling it as ‘incredible’ given the gap between the initial £8m valuation and the eventual cost of the deal.

“Eze, Olise and Ferguson for a combined fee of <£30m is sensational business from the club. Let’s hope Ferguson can stay fit”

“Palace are at it again with low prices for quality players with lots of talent and potential. This could end up being a massive steal if Ferguson ends up being a key player for us and plays well on the pitch.”

“Hopefully we’ll see Ferguson fit and playing soon. Incredible business though, given what WBA wanted.”

“Let’s all just take a minute to remember how angry everyone at #cpfc was when John Bostock left for £700k under a tribunal to Spurs. Whilst this benefits Palace, it’s clear to everyone that £900,000 is not a fair fee for Nathan Ferguson. The tribunal system is a joke”

Wolves fans react to Valencia rumour

A number of Wolves supporters have reacted negatively to a rumour linking the club with a move for Fenerbahce winger Enner Valencia.

Bruno Lage’s side may have found some form in the Premier League but that doesn’t mean their squad doesn’t need strengthening.

It could be that new signings are made in the January transfer window to ease the burden off Raul Jimenez given his constant international exploits, and one player who has been linked with a move to Molineux is Valencia.

According to Fotomac [via Talking Wolves on Twitter], Wolves are the front-runners to sign the former West Ham and Everton man.

The 32-year-old has scored an impressive 34 goals in 67 caps for Ecuador, so he could arguably be an experienced head who provides Lage with quality.

Dalrymple shuts door on Middlesex

The extra motivation of playing against his former team brings the best out of Jamie Dalrymple

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's25-Apr-2009ScorecardThe extra motivation of playing against his former team brings the best out of Jamie Dalrymple. His second hundred for Glamorgan was the second he’d scored against Middlesex since his departure, and it buried any thoughts the home side had of an afternoon run chase after the visitors’ middle-order wobble.Dalrymple, not wanting to give his old team-mates a chance of victory, eventually left them 369 in 44 overs, but may have wished he’d been a little more attacking when they slipped to 31 for 3 shortly after tea. The fear of what Phillip Hughes could do was probably a reason why he didn’t. In the end Middlesex survived comfortably enough as Hughes produced some powerful strokeplay to follow his hundred with an unbeaten 65, but they were the ones who’d started the day with serious thoughts of victory. When Danny Evans removed Mark Wallace the lead was 245 with 76 overs remaining. On a pitch still full of runs and a top order including Hughes, Middlesex were right in with a chance of a favourable pursuit, but Dalrymple’s determined century put paid to that. He reached his hundred off 184 balls to a gentle applause from some of the opposition.Middlesex’s early advances with halted by a stubborn effort from nightwatchman Adam Shantry before he edged a back-foot drive off Shaun Udal to slip. This was when the home side gave themselves a chance to press the issue as Evans produced his best spell of the match.First he trapped Tom Maynard for a duck, although it was another decision from umpire Steve Garratt that left a batsman far from amused. Evans didn’t care and still seemed to have plenty of pent up frustration remaining from the previous evening when he had been told to calm down by Ian Gould after some verbals to Dalrymple. The best way for a bowler to make his presence felt is with wickets and Evans struck another blow when he knocked back Mark Wallace’s off stump from round the wicket.Another quick blow and the victory chance was certainly on, but Dalrymple shut the door with a staunch innings. He kept the runs flowing, too, and was able to increase his strokeplay as Middlesex sensed their main chance had passed. Robert Croft, under pressure to justify his place, played an important role as well with a nuggety half-century. The pair added 124 for the eighth wicket to beat the Glamorgan record against Middlesex that was all of two days old, surpassing the 118 added by Wallace and David Harrison in the first innings.Croft’s dismissal brought the declaration and Harrison struck with the final ball before tea when he drew Billy Godleman into a loose drive outside off. Straight after the interval Neil Dexter was taken at second slip and when Shantry clipped Eoin Morgan’s off stump the game was entirely safe.Hughes, though, took advantage of some attacking fields to pepper the off side with his ridiculously strong cut shot to reach fifty off 53 balls. At one point Glamorgan tried to plug the game with two normal points and two in the deep, yet Hughes still threaded it to the boundary. If England’s bowlers want to know where not to bowl at him, get a DVD of this match and stick it on repeat.

Southampton: Livramento must start v Chelsea

Southampton are on their travels once again this weekend with a daunting trip to Stamford Bridge to take on European champions Chelsea as the Saints look to pick up their first Premier League win of the season.

After falling to a 1-0 defeat against Wolves thanks to a Raul Jimenez goal in their previous match, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side undoubtedly face a tough test against Thomas Tuchel’s side, despite the west Londoners having lost by a 1-0 scoreline in their two previous matches in all competitions.

However, one player who should excite the Southampton fans and give them some hope of being able to overcome Chelsea is Valentino Livramento.

Livramento could show Chelsea what they’re missing

Southampton signed the defender back in the previous summer transfer window from Chelsea for a fee of £5.31m.

Since then, the 18-year-old, who is currently valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, has played 90 minutes in all of the Saints’ Premier League games so far this season, apart from their 0-0 draw against Manchester City when he was substituted after picking up a late yellow card.

During his time with Southampton so far, the teenager has averaged two clearances and 1.8 tackles per game, testifying to his defensive solidity (as per SofaScore), and he has been described as a “great talent” by Sky Sports pundit Ledley King.

Despite the disappointing result against Wolves, Livramento earned an overall match rating of 7/10, making him the highest-rated Saints defender on the day according to SofaScore, shows just how impressive he has been for the club since his arrival over the summer.

Additionally, with Chelsea manager Tuchel recently saying that the west London club tried all they could to keep hold of the defender before he left for Southampton, this shows just how highly they rated him and his chances of becoming an important figure for them in the future.

Looking ahead to the match at Stamford Bridge, we feel there is no doubt that Livramento should be in the starting XI to face his old club, giving him the chance to show just why Southampton chose to sign him and why Chelsea may have made a big mistake in letting him go.

Spurs news: Son injury update emerges

Tottenham Hotspur could receive a timely injury boost ahead of this weekend’s London derby with Chelsea…

What’s the latest?

Nuno Santo has been without his top goalscorer Heung-min Son since their return from the international break as the South Korean picked up a calf problem ahead of his nation’s World Cup qualifier against Lebanon.

The 29-year-old attacker missed Spurs’ defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday and his absence was sorely felt as they were well beaten 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

However, according to the Evening Standard’s ever-reliable Spurs reporter Dan Kilpatrick, there is a confidence that he will be fit for this weekend’s big encounter.

“The club will be assessing day by day. (From what I hear, more optimism today that he could make Chelsea game),” he tweeted.

A big boost

If Son is fit in time for Sunday’s clash, then it’ll give Nuno and his squad a massive boost after last weekend’s disappointing result.

The £76.5m-rated dynamo is a major influence towards Spurs’ success so far this campaign, having scored more goals (two) than anyone else, whilst he also tops the charts for shots per game (3.3) and isn’t far behind for creating chances either, averaging one key pass per outing, as per WhoScored.

This has merely been him continuing on from his fine form last season, which saw him record 17 goals and ten assists (nearly 40% of their entire total), a feat bettered only by Harry Kane.

Against the Eagles, Spurs managed only two shots all game, one of which was on target. They also failed to create a single big chance. By comparison, Patrick Vieira’s side, who were winless before the match, managed to record a total of 18 shots and three key chances, via SofaScore.

It’s no coincidence that Nuno’s men suffered in the absence of Son, so it’s imperative that he is fit and available for a fixture as big as the one this weekend.

As Kilpatrick says, there is optimism that he will be fit enough to start on Sunday, and that should leave the Hotspur faithful and the Portuguese boss absolutely buzzing.

Spurs are a much greater threat with Son starting and the prospects of him being available are now seemingly increasing.

Hatfield graded Aston Villa’s transfer window as good to great

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes that Aston Villa’s transfer window has been very good but would have been outstanding if they had managed to keep Jack Grealish.

Dean Smith and sporting director Johan Lange made some terrific signings this summer with Danny Ings, Emi Buendia, Axel Tuanzebe, Leon Bailey and Ashley Young all penning deals at Villa Park.

In terms of outgoings, Villa saw a number of players depart the club either permanently or on loan during the transfer window with the most high profile of those exits being Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

He joined the Cityzens for a British record £100m and signed a six-year deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Hatfield graded Villa’s transfer window as a good to great one, telling Transfer Tavern: “Very good. I think Villa have managed to deal with a loss of such a substantial player in Jack Grealish really well, they’ve signed plenty of exciting players.

“You could argue that they’re now more balanced this squad in comparison to the way they were last year. Jack Grealish was so relied upon by Villa, you could pretty much tell how Villa were going to play, the ball was going to go to Jack Grealish on the left flank and he was going to run the game from there.

“Now when Villa are fully fit and they’ve got the likes of Buendia, Bailey, Ings and Watkins all playing they’ve got so many more threats, so they’re a much more balanced side because of this window.

“Despite the loss of Jack Grealish in there, if they managed to keep him it would have been an outstanding window for them, but it’s still been a good to great one.

Villa have bounced back from an opening day Premier League defeat to Watford, with a win and a draw in their next two matches against Newcastle United and Brentford.

Dean Smith’s side currently have four points and sit 11th in the league table which is where they finished last season and after a summer of good recruitment everybody connected with the club will be looking to improve on their league position this season.

Newcastle were offered 7 players

Newcastle United were reportedly offered as many as seven different players on loan in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Frustrating window

The St. James’ Park faithful only managed to bring in one player of note on a permanent deal in Joe Willock from Arsenal.

Given that he was already on loan there last season, the squad has not really improved in what turned out to be a frustrating window in the North East.

The Latest: Players offered

Writing in his latest piece for The Daily Telegraph, Luke Edwards has said that the Tyneside club were offered seven players on loan throughout the window: Hamza Choudhury, Axel Tuanzebe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Hector Bellerin, Harry Winks, Mason Holgate and Boubacar Kamara.

However, all of them requited a loan fee to be paid, which the Magpies hierarchy insisted that they could not afford.

The Verdict: Shame

To get even just a couple of those players in on loan deals would have made the window a much better one for Steve Bruce’s team, and instead, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland manager now has to work with a very similar squad to last season.

Described as a ‘phenomenal’ player by pundit Paul Robinson back in February after an impressive performance against Burnley while on loan at West Brom, Maitland-Niles made his feelings known late on in the window about potentially wanting to leave (The Guardian), and one cannot help that a deal could have been struck with the Gunners having already brought in Willock.

Tuanzebe and Bellerin have both moved on to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively, but the Toon should really be looking at revisiting moves for the other five players when January comes around.

Celtic eye move for Jed Wallace

Celtic returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Hoops bounced back from an Old Firm derby defeat before the international break.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were without star striker Kyogo Furuhashi who will miss the next seven games through injury but that didn’t seem to matter as Albian Ajeti found form.

On the chalkboard

Celtic also happened to be without two of their key players from years gone by in Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie.

Both players sealed moves away from Paradise on transfer deadline day as Edouard joined Crystal Palace and Christie headed to Bournemouth.

The former began Palace’s game with Spurs on Saturday on the bench but appeared late on and scored twice on a sensational debut.

However, it could actually be the latter who Celtic end up missing more. Christie was in sublime form at the start of the season, creating more key passes a match (4) than anybody else in the Bhoys side.

His early season performances were in stark contrast to the type of displays that we saw from the Scot last term when he scored only once in his last 11 Premiership outings.

The solution

One way Celtic could go about replacing the Scotland international is by signing Jed Wallace.

Reports from Football League World suggested this week that the Hoops were one of a number of sides interested in signing the £6.3m-rated player.

Wallace is currently contracted to Millwall but is out of contract next summer and thus, could be signed on a pre-contract agreement once January rolls around.

Also interested in the attacking midfielder are Rangers, West Brom, West Ham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.

By fending off the competition to sign him, Celtic could discover their brand new Christie.

Described as a “top player” by Lions boss Gary Rowett, the 27-year-old is capable of scoring and creating goals in abundance.

He has already scored three goals and assisted two strikes in seven outings in the second-tier of English football this term. That adds to the 18 goal involvements he registered throughout the 2020/21 season.

A closer look at the tools they both possess also displays a host of similarities. Last season, Christie registered 2.8 shots, 2.1 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game.

In comparison, Wallace had 2.2 shots, 2.2 key passes and 1.2 dribbles a match.

With that in mind, Celtic could find their direct replacement by luring him to Glasgow next year. On a free transfer, this would be the perfect acquisition for Postecoglou to make.
