Batting track expected in Mohali

The Mohali pitch is expected to be quite flat, and fast bowlers are likely to be more effective on it than spinners

Nagraj Gollapudi in Mohali27-Mar-2011There are no match tickets available. There are no hotel rooms vacant for the thousands flocking to Chandigarh from all over the world. The premiers of both India and Pakistan will be there to watch their men contest the second semi-finals of the World Cup. Add to those certainties one other: the Mohali pitch is bound to be batsmen-friendly. If sources are to be believed, then the fast bowlers will be more effective than spinners. “It is a good batting wicket. I don’t think it will turn much,” a Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) official said.History suggests that captains prefer to bat first on calling the coin right and both MS Dhoni and Shahid Afridi will do well to follow convention. It is better to bat first because the wicket tends to lose pace as the match goes on. But if there is heavy dew things could change. “A 280-plus total would be really difficult to chase,” the source said. Over the last five years, in the nine matches played at the ground the 300-run mark has been breached only twice. Incidentally, on the first occasion, Pakistan successfully chased India’s 321 in a day-night game, with Younis Khan’s 117 overshadowing Sachin Tendulkar’s 99.In the past five years, seven out of the nine matches have been won by the side batting first. Also, there were seven day-night matches with five won by the side batting first and only two by the chasing side. Wednesday’s semi-final would be the first match to be played under lights since November 2009 in Mohali.Of the 137 wickets taken in those nine matches, fast bowlers accounted for 105, while the spinners claimed just 29. Even though the seamers have predominantly controlled affairs here, slow bowlers like Harbhajan Singh, who relies on bounce, have always got good purchase from the Mohali pitch. At the same time the hard clay in the pitch tends to make the ball skid rather than spin, so a spinner like Afridi would do well to push the ball rather than spin it.Another talking point in the build-up to the match has been the dew. Over the last few days there has been heavy dew with the outfield being really wet till 10 pm. The curator will be taking measures like not watering the ground two days before the match and cutting the outfield really low but it would be difficult to eliminate the dew entirely. An essential factor for the dew to not spoil the evening would be the presence of the wind during the first half of the day. If it is windy during the day the dew will not be heavy, otherwise it will play affect team strategies.

Aston Villa could swoop for Kalvin Phillips

Gabby Agbonlahor has dropped a teasing Aston Villa transfer claim which could well excite Steven Gerrard and the club’s supporters.

What’s the word?

An interesting transfer claim has dropped from the 35-year-old via talkSPORT regarding Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The former Villa striker explained that Phillips “would love to come” to the club as opposed to some other suitors.

The Leeds star is in high demand right now, with various Premier League clubs being linked with him over the previous few months such as Manchester United and Liverpool.

Gerrard given Phillips transfer boost

There seems little doubt Phillips that is one of the most sought-after midfielders in the Premier League at the moment.

Rising through the Leeds academy to feature for England in a major tournament, it has been an exponential growth which doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

The 26-year-old has been vital in preserving Leed’s top-flight status. and a move elsewhere surely seems a matter of when and not if based on the widespread interest in him.

A hamstring injury disrupted the middle segment of his season, which arguably contributed to the Whites’ poor form as they won only three times without him, yet he has still made 18 appearances in all competitions this term.

With his market value reaching a career high of £45m at the end of March 2022, it is going to take a major transfer fee for Leeds to even consider selling him, especially to a team in the same division.

Nonetheless, Villa and Gerrard could be tempted to make an offer for him, particularly if Jesse Marsch’s team are relegated at the end of the current campaign.

The midfielder would no doubt boost Villa’s options in the centre of the park and give them a solid base around which to build, as Gerrard will surely be targeting a European spot next season.

The 41-year-old Villa manager must be excited by Agbonlahor’s transfer claim about Phillips, whose tremendous 7.01 WhoScored rating for 2020/21 would suggest that he would be a huge enhancement to the Midlanders’ current squad.

AND in other news, Gerrard must finally axe “frustrating” £59k-p/w Smith flop as big Villa update emerges

CSA apologises to Herschelle Gibbs

Cricket South Africa have apologised to Herschelle Gibbs for prematurely announcing that his contract was terminated

Firdose Moonda05-Dec-2010Cricket South Africa has apologised to Herschelle Gibbs for prematurely announcing that his contract was terminated.CSA had issued a release on Friday saying that they had cancelled Gibbs’ contract “by mutual agreement.” At the time, Gibbs’ lawyer Peter Whelan was waiting for the board’s legal representative to get in touch with him in order to discuss the matter. They have since met and Whelan confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the contract has now been terminated. “Herschelle did a settlement with CSA, the terms of which are confidential. We can say that there was no bad faith from CSA. It was in everybody’s interests.”Whelan rejected claims that Gibbs had breached his contract as “just rumours”. A source on Friday said that Gibbs had fallen foul of the administration after violating the terms “on various grounds,” in his tell-all autobiography, . The book, which sold out its first print run of 15,000 copies in five days, made damning claims against the national team, detailing how it was run by a clique of senior players comprising Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers. Gibbs had also said former coach Mickey Arthur had been a puppet and revealed details of sexual debauchery, particularly on the 1997-98 tour to Australia.CSA asked its legal counsel to look into allegations made in the book shortly after its release but would not be drawn on whether the findings of their investigation led to Gibbs’ contract being cancelled. “Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments from the parties concerned,” Gerald Majola, the CSA chief executive, said in a statement.Gibbs was one of 23 players contracted until the end of April 2011 but speculation in South Africa was rife that after the cancellation of his contract, Gibbs’ international career was over. However, he “remains eligible for selection” according to the board statement. Gibbs has expressed his desire to play in next year’s World Cup and recently quit first-class cricket to concentrate on the limited-overs format.Gibbs has also obtained a no-objection certificate from CSA, allowing him to play in a Twenty20 competition in New Zealand later this month and sources say he is also interested in participating in the Australian Big Bash. He is also in discussion with his franchise, the Cobras, about signing a contract with them. According to Whelan, the possibility of an agreement with the Cobras “looks good.”

South Africa favourites to wrap up series

Going into the final Twenty20 in Kimberley, South Africa look good to wrap up the series with their superior batting, but they’ll be wary of the lack of depth in their seam attack. Zimbabwe’s major worry is their bowling.

Their seamers, Wayne Parnell, Rusty Theron and Ryan McLaren, were targeted by Hamilton Masakadza and Chamu Chibhabha to steer Zimbabwe to a challenging score after a cautious start. The fielding left a lot of be desired with dropped catches and misfields enabling the Zimbabwe batsmen to ward off any pressure. And most importantly, South Africa’s attack, already missing Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis who’ve been rested, is weakened further by the absence of Morne Morkel, who bowled just two overs in Blomfontein, and left the field due to an ankle injury. He is certain to miss Sunday’s encounter and remains in doubt for the ODI series that follows.Zimbabwe’s major worry is their bowling. Barring opening seamer Chris Mpofu, all the other bowlers were taken for more than ten an over. While South Africa’s lack of depth in their attack was a reason for its ineffectiveness, the utter ruthlessness of the defeat inflicted upon Zimbabwe’s bowlers leaves them in need of an urgent turnaround.Form guideSouth Africa WWWLL

Preview: Celtic vs Bodo/Glimt

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side return to European action this evening, with Bodo/Glimt making the trip to Parkhead for the Europa Conference League play-off round meeting.

After being narrowly eliminated in the Europa League group stage, the newly-formed Conference League offers the 56-year-old and his side a second chance at going on a European cup run this season – and potentially even the opportunity to pick up the club’s first international trophy since the Lisbon Lions’ European Cup triumph back in 1967.

As such, Postecoglou will undoubtedly be looking to field his strongest possible XI tonight, with sweeping changes from the initial lineup against Raith Rovers last weekend expected to be made by the Greek-Australian coach.

So, how many alterations will the 56-year-old make to the side that started the 4-0 Scottish Cup victory last time out? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against Bodo/Glimt, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Postecoglou recently revealing that Josip Juranovic will be available for selection after recovering from illness, as well as confirming that Mikey Johnston and Yosuke Ideguchi will not feature this evening, we predict that the 56-year-old will make eight changes to the team that lined up against Rovers last weekend.

Three of these changes come in the back four, with Liam Scales, Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston making way for the returns of Greg Taylor, Carl Starfelt and the fit-again Juranovic respectively.

In the middle of the park, Callum McGregor takes the place of Nir Bitton in the more defensive role of Postecoglou’s midfield three, while the £15k-per-week Tom Rogic – who Brendan Rogers previously dubbed an “elusive” player – makes way for the 21-year-old Matt O’Riley – who Kieran Devlin labelled a consistent “8/10” performer.

Finally, there are wholesale changes in the front three, with the aforementioned Johnston being ruled out due to injury, while Giorgos Giakoumakis and James Forrest also drop out of the XI, with Jota, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda staring on the left-wing, right-wing and at centre-forward respectively.

In other news: Ange must now unleash “one of the brightest” Celtic talents, he’d blow Bodo/Glimt away

Persevering India edge ahead

Fortunes ebbed and flowed on the third day with India sneaking ahead by the close. The hosts undermined a blistering knock by Virender Sehwag with early wickets before Suresh Raina and VVS Laxman launched an Indian recovery

Amit Mishra frustrated the Sri Lankan bowlers with 40 to help India gain a slender lead•Cameraworx/Live ImagesFortunes ebbed and flowed on the third day with India sneaking ahead by the close. The hosts undermined a blistering knock by Virender Sehwag with early wickets before Suresh Raina and VVS Laxman launched a recovery. Their departure, in quick succession, saw spirited batting from India’s lower order to scale Sri Lanka’s first-innings total, and Sehwag’s double-strike just before stumps set up a fascinating face-off over the next two days amid encouraging conditions for the bowlers. The game was on even terms when Sri Lanka began their second innings but their attempts to set India a sizable target had to stand the test of a track offering some turn and extra bounce. The left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was introduced as early as the seventh over and Tharanga Paranavitana and Tillakaratne Dilshan set about trying to unsettle him immediately, playing the pull, the sweep and even charging out. Paranavitana swung and missed and survived a close shave when he played one just wide of short leg.MS Dhoni opted for the offspinner at the other end, and Sehwag made an immediate impact. He slipped in a quicker one on a length to which Paranavitana erred by playing back and edged to Dhoni. Dilshan was fortunate to survive an lbw shout off an arm ball by Ojha but was caught superbly the next over by M Vijay at forward short leg, as he inside-edged a turning delivery from Sehwag. The two wickets underscored the importance of India’s lower-order resistance where the last three wickets accumulated 86 runs.Abhimanyu Mithun has shone down the order in each of the three Tests, and Amit Mishra joined him in a stand that tilted the scales after Sri Lanka had clawed back with three quick wickets. The intention in the previous two games was to purely block but their approach this innings was infused with a bit of urgency. Mithun played some powerful drives while Mishra stepped out and even used the paddle to improvise. Lasith Malinga gave them a hard time with a barrage of short deliveries that struck their fingers, but they were determined enough to preserve their wickets, taking the bottom hand off and fending wide of the close-in fielder. The foundation for the lead, however, was provided by a fighting stand between Raina and Laxman, who batted positively to narrow the deficit at a steady rate. The tempo of India’s innings, though not as frenetic as when Sehwag was blazing away, was healthy enough to ensure their bowlers had a fair go at the hosts in the second innings.Raina batted with determination and helped India rebuild – just as he had in friendlier conditions on his way to a debut century at the SSC. Though a touch vulnerable against Suraj Randiv, who got the ball to spit and troubled him with deceptive turn, Raina avoided getting bogged down, working the singles with Laxman who was a little more composed at the other end. Raina defended assuredly, met the length deliveries with a forward stride and improvised with minimal risk. He pulled, swept and drove Ajantha Mendis, and picked Dilshan for boundaries through the leg side. He looked far more at ease after lunch, slashing Malinga for consecutive boundaries, bringing up his fifty and charging out to Randiv to launch him over extra cover.Laxman picked Malinga’s deceptive slower ones early and dealt well with deliveries that were pitched short. He cut and pulled Randiv for boundaries early in his innings, punched Chanaka Welegedara through the covers and inflicted the same treatment on Malinga. Laxman was on the lookout for scoring opportunities, often opening the face to deliveries flung just outside off and reached his half-century, guiding Malinga past the keeper. However, the pair were separated when Mendis attacked from round the wicket. He found plenty of turn with his legspin from that angle, getting the ball to grip. Laxman’s dabs outside off produced a couple of edges, the second of which was snapped by Mahela Jayawardene. Raina was done in by the bounce of a carrom ball that he punched straight to short midwicket. Malinga soon snared MS Dhoni, who gloved an attempted pull before the tail stepped up.A combination of some attacking bowling and reckless batting had given Sri Lanka a couple of early breakthroughs. India suffered a setback with the departure of Sachin Tendulkar in the first over of the day, and Sehwag’s ill-conceived attempt to loft Randiv over cover – shortly after reaching his century – landed safely in the palms of Welegedara. Those two wickets had marked the first change of fortunes on an eventful day, but Sehwag ensured he compensated before stumps by turning the game India’s way.

Celtic: Hutton reacts to Henderson update

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to Ewan Henderson’s move from Celtic to Hibernian, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Busy start to 2022

The Hoops have wasted no time when it comes to their January business, with moves for Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Daizen Maeda already finalised.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Permanent moves for loanees Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota are also being worked on behind-the-scenes while moving on a number of players is also on the club’s to-do list.

The likes of Vasilis Barkas and Boli Bolingoli could be where Celtic bring in some funds, but it is Henderson who is the first player to depart Parkhead in 2022.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Hutton, who regularly features on BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding Henderson and Hibs in a story released on Tuesday evening.

A move to Easter Road has since been announced, with the 21-year-old joining on loan before making a move permanent in the summer.

Here’s what Hutton had to say, labelling an exit as ‘heartbreaking’.

“I think it’s always a worry. As fans and as a club, you always want to see the academy doing well.

“You want to see young players coming through. They know what the club’s all about, they know what it feels like to play and support the team and just see the development.

“That’s what the academy is there for, to have a pathway to the first team. Throughout the years, Celtic and Rangers have had times where the odd player’s come through and then went missing for a long time.

“It is a worry they’re getting back to those years where it’s constant players coming in through the door. Foreign players or players on initial fees and there’s no opportunity for youngsters.

“So it can be heartbreaking, it can be devastating for the youth setup because you can’t see any way in.

“I even remember when I was coming through at one stage. I was thinking there is no way I’m going to make into this first team. Every transfer window there was a new player coming in.

“It can be disappointing, but I think ultimately if you’re good enough, you will have an opportunity. Then it’s up to the player.”

The Verdict: The right call

Although it’s never ideal seeing a player Celtic have developed for a number of years move on, it appears to be the correct decision. Henderson played just once under Ange Postecoglou this season, coming off the bench to score in a Europa League dead rubber against Real Betis.

He was never really in the matchday squad either despite the club’s huge injury list, so a fresh start with Shaun Maloney should be the best move for him.

It doesn’t look as if Celtic have received any money for the attacking midfielder’s services due to the loan and Henderson being out of contract in the summer, but hopefully funds will be brought in from the likes of Barkas and Bolingoli.

In other news: Celtic may now sign £4.5m-rated man on loan; would ‘separate’ Nicholson from Lawwell.

Kemp among South Africa's probables

South Africa have named allrounder Justin Kemp in their initial squad of 30 for the ICC World Twenty20 to be played in the Caribbean in April and May 2010. Experienced fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, who is no longer a part of the Test and one-day sides, has also found a place in the list of probables.Kemp joined the unofficial Indian Cricket League soon after the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, and hasn’t played for South Africa in nearly two-and-a-half years. After the ban on him for ICL links was lifted at the start of the season, he has captained Cape Cobras to the top of the table in the Supersport Series and a place in the semi-finals of the Standard Pro20 series.South Africa have also named four uncapped players in the preliminary squad. The four are batsman Colin Ingram and fast bowler Rusty Theron from the Warriors, batsman David Miller from the Dolphins and fast bowler Ethy Mbhalati of the Titans. The final squad of 15 will be named in March.Men’s squad: Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Abdulla, Hashim Amla, Loots Bosman, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Colin Ingram, Justin Kemp, Rory Kleinveldt, Charl Langeveldt, Ethy Mbhalati, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Rusty Theron, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Roelof van der Merwe, Johannes van der Wath, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Morne van Wyk.
