The Chalkboard: Why Shelvey must start for Newcastle vs Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle take on Liverpool this weekend, and Rafael Benitez should take a gamble to turn the Reds’ biggest strength into a weakness.

On the chalkboard

Liverpool and Manchester City have run away with the league this season because their squads have no weakness, but that doesn’t mean they are equally strong in all areas.

One area that Liverpool clearly have the upper hand in is at the back, particularly out wide, where Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been nothing short of sensational throughout the campaign.

The pair have combined for a remarkable 24 assists this season, and are undoubtedly the biggest source of creativity in a team that does not rely on its midfield players to break the opposition down, instead using the full-backs basically as wingers when Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane move more central.

So how can Benitez stop this? Well, it all starts with the return of one man.

Jonjo time

Jonjo Shelvey has been left behind and forgotten at Newcastle this season. The former Red was nailed on throughout most of Benitez’s tenure, but picked up an injury before Christmas and never made it back into the team.

Now though, with Sean Longstaff injured, Shelvey is the one player on Tyneside capable of turning Liverpool’s overlapping wide men from a strength into a weakness.

Even with Miguel Almiron missing and potentially Ayoze Perez out injured too, Shelvey’s ability to spread perfect passes 60 yards across the St. James’ Park turf will either force Alexander-Arnold and Robertson to retreat, or cause countless counter-attacking opportunities.

Benitez may not have quality in reserve for his injured front men, but he does have speed, and Christian Atsu and Kenedy are more than capable of latching on to Shelvey’s passes and whipping the ball immediately towards Salomon Rondon.

Not only will this strategy give the Magpies and out ball when they are under what will no doubt be immense pressure from the title-chasing Merseysiders, it could just be the thing that causes their guests’ downfall, putting the nail in the coffin of their quest to catch Manchester City.

Leeds fans want Tyler Roberts to win Young player of the Year

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have voiced their opinions on who should claim the club’s Young Player of the Year award and there is a clear winner in the minds of the fanbase.

Tyler Roberts has excelled in recent weeks when playing in a deeper role and his performances have seen the fans campaign for him to win the yearly accolade.

The Welshman faces tough competition from Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton but Leeds fans believe that Roberts has to be the winner.

Roberts has scored three goals and assisted four so far this season but his impact since dropping into the midfield has seen him become one of the first names on the teamsheet for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The 20-year-old has been instrumental whilst playing as an attacking midfielder, a role which he has recently taken up after Samu Saiz’s departure from Elland Road.

Clarke and Shackleton, of course, are worthy nominees but if the twitter replies are any indication of the fans’ voting intention then Roberts should win with a landslide.

Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter…

Newcastle fans react to news Andy Carroll is to leave West Ham and go to the MLS

[ad_pod ]

Andy Carroll is to leave West Ham on a free transfer after his season was ended with injury according to The Chronicle, and Toon fans have reacted to the news.

Carroll who is now 30, has had a career plighted by injury and it is thought he is considering a fresh start in the MLS.

The former Liverpool man could however, end up staying in East London because the Hammers have an option to extend his contract by two years.

The Geordie, who left Newcastle for a club-record £35 million in 2011 has consistently been linked with a return to Tyneside, which has often caused mixed reaction within the Newcastle fan-base.

He has made 102 appearances for West Ham scoring 26 goals since he signed permanently for the club back in June 2013.

His record for the Magpies was better making 80 appearances and scoring 31 goals, but some Toon fans certainly do not want him back at the club if the thoughts of the following fans are anything to go by.

Paul Merson heaps praise on Palace ahead of new White Hart Lane opener

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace will be the first team to face Tottenham at the new White Hart Lane this week and the Eagles would love nothing more than to take it right to their hosts and come away with three points, thus breaking Spurs hearts.

It’s well known that the Selhurst Park outfit are far better away from home, where they feel more inclined to sit back and hit their hosts on the counter – what they’re good at – so the clash will be an interesting one.

Roy Hodgson’s side will be hoping to capitalise on any nerves from the home side and secure a brilliant three points which would surely see them achieve Premier League survival for another year.

Paul Merson has offered his predictions ahead of the midweek clash and Palace fans will love what the Sky Sports pundit had to say:

“I can’t think of a worse game to play as the first at your new stadium. Crystal Palace are one of the best counter-attacking sides about on their day. They are a big threat on the counter away from home.

“This is another hard game for Spurs. They will be kicking themselves about the result at Anfield. There only looked like one winner as the game went on and, in the end, they lost the game. How many times have we said that about Spurs in the last year? I’m just going to go with Tottenham but I would not be surprised if they didn’t win this game.”

While the former Arsenal midfielder still opted for a Spurs win, Palace fans will be rubbing their hands with glee at Merson’s assessment of the clash and how difficult he thinks it will be for the Mauricio Pochettino’s side to achieve that result they so desperately crave in their new home.

Which player with “no potential” has just been named Crystal Palace’s worst ever January signing? Find out in the video below…

Palace’s away form is saving their season, there is no doubt, and they could get another impressive win under the belt on Wednesday night against a side who they have given as good as they’ve got against in recent meetings.

In their front three, of which Wilfried Zaha is the crown jewel, the Eagles have an attack to trouble the best sides in the Premier League – will they cause one of the biggest upsets of the season?

Pierre-Emerick Hojbjerg knows what will make Southampton a ‘fantastic team’

[ad_pod ]

Southampton head into a well-earned three-week break now that their clash with Watford has been postponed due to the Hornets’ progression to the FA Cup’s last eight. The gap in fixtures has given the Saints a chance to get an interview with training-obsessed captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this week.

Speaking to the club media, the Dane said:

“[As captain] I have to be even more aware of other things. How is the team doing? How are my teammates? Does someone need help?

“I go and fight for what I love, which is Southampton Football Club and football. I give myself everything, so I need to look people in the eyes and feel people: who do I want to go to war with?

“I believe that if everybody takes their responsibility, if everybody is brave and mentally prepared to show their qualities in the same system and in the same way, we have a fantastic team – but only then.

“Suddenly you play against Southampton and you know, ‘I have to go for a fight now, I have to go to war’. That’s what I want from my team.”

It’s certainly inspiring stuff and it’s no wonder that Ralph Hasenhuttl made the former Bayern Munich man permanent captain upon his taking of the wheel in December.

Indeed, the midfielder epitomises the grit and determination which have been crucial to the drastic improvements the St Mary’s Stadium outfit have made in recent weeks. Obviously, moments of quality from the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Yan Valery have helped, but this attitude is admirable.

Southampton do have the quality man-to-man to escape their current predicament but Hojbjerg rightly believes they can be so much more than that with an elite mindset.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Saints might have emerged victorious over Spurs last time out but they are far from safe with eight games left and merely two points separating them from the drop zone so, as Hojbjerg says, each and every man will have to fight for the cause.

If they don’t then they will have the 23-year-old to answer to and it sounds like he won’t tolerate anyone who isn’t pulling their weight in the starting XI.

Injury News: Longstaff out for the rest of the season

[ad_pod ]

Sean Longstaff is expected to miss the rest of the season, Newcastle have confirmed, but will this drag the Magpies back into the relegation scrap?

What’s the story?

Longstaff was replaced with a knee injury in Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham, and the club have confirmed that the youngster suffered ligament damage.

In a statement on their official site, the Magpies said: “Newcastle United can confirm midfielder Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season with a knee ligament injury.”

There is light at the end of the tunnel though, as The Chronicle reports that the midfielder will not require surgery to repair the damage in his knee.

This means he could be back in light training by the end of March, and will presumably be 100 per cent fit by the beginning of next season.

Silver linings

Longstaff has been fabulous for Rafael Benitez since breaking into the side, simultaneously providing both physicality and defensive contribution as well as calmness in possession and high quality passing.

This is something that St. James’ Park simply hasn’t seen recently barring the odd Jonjo Shelvey master-class, and there’s no doubt they will miss the 21 year-old.

However, with Shelvey, Mo Diame and Ki Sung-yueng all waiting in the wings, Benitez still has more options in midfield that he had at this point last season, when he was able to not only escape the drop but surge up into the top ten.

With Fulham and Huddersfield all but doomed, Magpies fans should take solace in the fact that Cardiff will play four of the top six in their last nine games. The Bluebirds have also lost Sol Bamba to injury, so they are definitely the favourites to go down.

As far as knee ligament injuries go, if Longstaff returns next season in perfect shape with the club’s Premier League status still in tact, this is about as good as it gets.

Highly-praised Holland waits his turn

Jon Holland is one of the two best spinners in Australia at the moment, according to the national selector John Inverarity. The problem is getting a chance to prove it.Although Nathan Lyon remains the front-runner for the spin position in Australia’s squad for the first Test against South Africa early next month, the pressure will build on Lyon if Holland piles up the wickets over the next fortnight. That can only happen if Victoria’s world-class pace attack led by James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, John Hastings and Clint McKay don’t skittle opposition teams. And at the moment, they’re making batsmen from all over the country look like Chris Martin. That has created a selection dilemma for Victoria, who must also squeeze Andrew McDonald back into the side after his return from the Champions League Twenty20. Inverarity’s panel wants to see Holland given game time, especially after his strong performances during the Australia A tour of England during the winter. On that trip, Holland picked up ten wickets at 27.30 compared to Lyon’s eight at 48.75, which confirmed that he had jumped ahead of Michael Beer in the national queue.”I think it’s fair to say that we’re of the view that the two best spinners we’ve got just at this moment are Nathan Lyon and Jon Holland,” Inverarity said in Sydney on Tuesday.”I saw [Holland] bowl in Adelaide last year in a one-dayer when he got 6 for 29 and he bowled beautifully. There was a variation in spin, a variation in pace and he flighted the ball, he bowled beautifully. We took him on the Australia A tour and he bowled very well. We all go through patches, and Lyon was in a bad patch in England and Holland outbowled him. But Lyon in Adelaide was bowling very differently to the way he bowled in England.”Wickets have not been forthcoming for Lyon early in the Sheffield Shield season – he has two victims at 112.50 – but he remains the Test incumbent and appears likely to retain his place for now. But the glowing praise from Inverarity, who himself took 221 first-class wickets bowling left-arm orthodox, has given Holland heart that he is on the right track, and that an opportunity in the baggy green could come at any time.”It’s pretty good to hear that from the chairman of selectors for Australia,” Holland told ESPNcricinfo. “But I’m more focused on playing for Victoria at the moment. If that comes along then so be it. But Nathan Lyon is bowling pretty well and he’s done a good job with his opportunities. I dare say he’s still in front.”On the A trip he [Inverarity] was over in England, I spoke to him a few times there. He’s been pretty happy with the way I bowl, the way I go about things with my flight. He picked up something with my action in Brisbane on a pre-season camp, I was falling over a bit and my head was going to one side, he said to try and keep that as straight as possible.”Every little piece of advice is a bonus for Holland, who at 25 has been on the domestic scene for four years, and on the minds of Australia’s selectors for most of that time. He was called up for Australia’s ODI tour of India in October 2009 but did not play a game, and has now had four stints at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, gradually developing his art.Initially, his opportunities with Victoria were limited by the presence of the legspinner Bryce McGain, but over the past two years Holland has clearly been the Bushrangers’ frontline slow bowler. He is yet to take a first-class five-wicket haul, but that is not unusual for an Australian spinner on the cusp of a call-up – Nathan Hauritz and Nathan Lyon both claimed their maiden five-wicket hauls while playing Test cricket. Now his chances are dictated by the success of Victoria’s fast men. In the first two Sheffield Shield games this season, Holland was bowled a total of 10 overs and has taken 0 for 34.”There hasn’t really been a great deal in the wickets for me,” he said. “But with the bowling attack we’ve had, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle are world-class bowlers and Clint McKay, John Hastings and Andrew McDonald aren’t too far behind them. They’ve done a really good job in the first two games and have taken wickets on a regular basis, so I wasn’t really required at all, which is a good thing from a team point of view. It’s always good to take a few wickets yourself but as long as we’re winning I’m not really that fussed.”Next week, Holland will have the chance to bowl at the MCG for the first time this season – assuming he is picked to play Tasmania – and it’s a venue that is unlikely to offer him much spin. But much like Daniel Vettori, Holland’s key weapon is not prodigious turn but subtle changes of pace, and he is confident that his style will allow him to have success on any surface.”It’s pretty important on Australian wickets that you do change your pace and your flight, because you don’t get much help out of the wicket,” he said. “The MCG last year was fairly flat, it didn’t really break up and take much spin. But as long as I’m consistently bowling in the one area it should be right on any pitches and in any conditions. As long as I’m hitting the right spot and changing my pace I don’t think I need to vary my bowling too much.”For the time being, just getting a bowl would be a start.

Leeds fans react to the signing of Elia Caprile

Leeds have finally conducted some business in the transfer market with the arrival of goalkeeper Elia Caprile, but for some supporters it is not the signing they had hoped for.

It is a rather strange move. The Whites already have two goalkeepers on the books in Kiko Casilla and Illan Meslier, and given Caprile is 18 years of age it is doubtful that he will be able to get ahead of that pair in the pecking order.

If he doesn’t impact the team immediately fans will likely be left disappointed given their desire for additions who will improve the squad and increase the chance of promotion.

As a result, many supporters have reacted sarcastically to the news in an expression of their frustration, which means the youngster is not receiving a warm reception.

If that wasn’t bad enough, some have responded to the news by bringing up other targets that have been linked with a move to the club, such as Che Adams and Andre Gray.

Supporters are very keen on those two as they could provide the goals needed to secure a top-two finish, and with the squad short on strikers it makes fans’ eagerness to bring them in even greater.

It is easy to see why fans have been reacting in such a manner, as the lack of an additional striker is a big concern, and really quite unforgivable given the fact the Whites now lie just four points ahead of the promotion-chasing pack.

Not replacing Eddie Nketiah, who was brought in to replace Kemar Roofe, could backfire massively over the remainder of the season, and it would be devastating for the fanbase if the team missed out on another great chance to win promotion.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Other supporters have reacted with a mixture of happiness and anger at Caprile’s arrival, and it is intriguing to see how the club responds to this in the coming days.

Elsewhere, fans have been embroiled in a discussion about another interesting development that has taken place over the last few weeks.

A slice of Premier League genius: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

[ad_pod ]

Each week on Football FanCast we will be celebrating the special breed who lit up the Premier League with their unique brand of utter genius. This time out we pay homage to the Scandinavian king of the cameos.

Is there a more back-handed compliment than that of ‘supersub’? Certainly in the wrong hands it can be deemed a slight and really how can it not be? “See that lady there. She’s a fantastic mistress.” An unrefined analogy but you get the point.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer however there were never any negative connotations in the lauding of his immense contribution from the bench. He turned it entirely into a positive and this is illustrative of not only how and why he made such a huge impact on the Premier League but of his character too.

Of his 366 appearances in red 150 of them came as a substitute and while his team-mates in the dugout kept warm and bantered about this and that, the Norwegian striker would carefully study the opposition centre-backs; assessing their movement and weaknesses: a baby-faced assassin scoping out his target. His assiduity to detail initially astounded Sir Alex Ferguson and it took an awful lot to astound Fergie.

Then the call would come and the board would be raised and there would be a late hero. From Solskjaer’s 126 goals for Manchester United – a prolificacy that is comparable to all but the Shearers and Rooneys – 33 of them were put away in the final 15 minutes of games. That’s just over a quarter. That’s incredible.

A caveat before moving on. Of course the arch-poacher was significantly more than a king of the cameos. He was a formidable forward talent who won six Premier League titles and a Champions League. He was an expert exponent of leading the line and possessed rare pedigree in real-time dissection of a football match (a skillset that has seen him move into coaching and this week begin a temporary tenure at Old Trafford). He was a hundred times more than a mere ‘supersub’.

And yet, coming on fresh but cold into a game and turning it on its head is a special talent in itself, and Solskjaer was so good at it that he made it a heightened art-form. That’s what is being celebrated here. That was his slice of genius.

It is February 6th 1999 and a title-chasing United are at the City Ground, effortlessly but ruthlessly dismantling a relegation-haunted Nottingham Forest. The result has already been concluded: two goals apiece by Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke have seen to that and on the forty-first anniversary to the day of the Munich air disaster the visitors were on course to post an impressive haul.

In hindsight it probably wasn’t fair to bring on Solskjaer with eighteen minutes remaining. In his three years at the club – arriving for a bargain fee of £1.5m from Molde – the curly-haired striker had already accrued a peerless reputation for supersubbing. He came on – usually for Yorke but on occasion for Cole – and he scored. That’s what he did. Sometimes they would be vital last-gasp winners. Sometimes not.

Here the Forest players were ‘gone’ and clearly wanted the final whistle. They had been thoroughly outclassed and another chance for precious points had been taken from them. You can imagine how they felt looking across and seeing the energetic Scandinavian bouncing on the spot by the touchline. His sniper sights set.

Watch the video below to check out the hilarious things footballers get up to at Christmas…

With ten minutes left on the clock he converted a low, drilled cross by Gary Neville. For the next few minutes United played keep-ball. There were now two minutes to go and in the game’s final flourishes Solskjaer was just getting warmed up as proven by his artful beating of an offside trap. It took him two attempts to beat Dave Beasant but beat him he did.

Back to the pretty possession with Forest pulled out of shape and lulled into following the ball not the player. On the edge of the box Solskjaer loitered and was duly found by Paul Scholes. One touch to set his sights and one ferocious volley later and it was that rarest of beautiful things – a substitute hat-trick.

He wasn’t finished yet though. In the third minute of stoppage time and 7-1 up, United were not finished yet.

A scuffed cross by Nicky Butt landed at the feet of Scholes who uncharacteristically fluffed his lines. But the ball ran loose in the penalty area with a predator lurking. Throughout an eleven year spell in the north of England we saw 126 times what happened in that scenario.

A year later he would go on to make an altogether more famous and infinitely more important contribution from the bench. Four goals in thirteen minutes though: that’s super indeed.
