Former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful has had his eight-year ban for involvement in corruption reduced to a five-year penalty, with two years suspended, by the BCB’s disciplinary panel chairman. Ashraful had appealed to the disciplinary panel chief, Justice Mohammad Abdur Rashid, in July, asking that the ban he received a month earlier, for his involvement in match and spot-fixing in the 2013 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, be reduced. The five-year ban is dated from August 13, 2013. The last two years are suspended subject to his participation in a BCB or ICC anti-corruption education and training programme. “Upon production of a certificate of good conduct from ICC”, a BCB release said, he will be eligible to return to cricket “on or about August 13, 2016”.Ashraful, who had admitted to his guilt before being banned, said he was pleased with the result of his appeal. “I had wanted a reduction in the ban similar to what has been given to me, when I had appealed,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I’m very happy, now I can play [sooner]. I should have been punished, yes, but I think this is good for me.”In other decisions taken by the disciplinary panel chief, Sri Lanka slow-bowling allrounder Kaushal Lokuarachchi’s 18-month ban, for failing to report an approach, was reduced to one year. One of the owners of Dhaka Gladiators, Shihab Jishan Chowdhury, who had been found guilty of “being party to an effort to fix” a match in the BPL and handed a ten-year ban, had also appealed. His ban was upheld by the disciplinary panel chief, but the fine of BDT 2 million (US$ 25,000 approx) that went with it was quashed. However, Salim Chowdhury, the franchise’s chairman, who was acquitted of all charges after the anti-corruption tribunal concluded its hearing into the matter, was slapped with a ten-year ban by the disciplinary panel chief. Salim Chowdhury’s ban will be dated from August 13, 2013.Responding to the disciplinary chief’s rulings, the ICC and BCB said in a joint statement: “The ICC and the BCB have received the determination and are pleased to note that Shihab Jishan Chowdury’s 10-year ban has been upheld, while Salim Chowdhury has now also been found guilty and banned for 10 years.”In respect of the other findings, the ICC and the BCB are in the process of carefully reviewing the determination, following which they will decide on their next steps, including whether or not to appeal any aspect(s) of the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”Following the BCB anti-corruption tribunal’s ruling on the corruption allegations earlier this year, the ICC and BCB had expressed displeasure at some of the results. The BCB had set up the tribunal after the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit had brought to its attention the instances of possible corruption in the BPL. Following its investigation, the anti-corruption tribunal had found Shihab Jishan Chowdhury guilty. Ashraful had confessed and pleaded guilty to wrongdoing before the tribunal’s investigation, while Lokuarachchi and New Zealand’s Lou Vincent had said they failed to report approaches made to them. Six other players were discharged as not guilty by the tribunal, and Salim Chowdhury as well as the franchise’s CEO Gaurav Rawat and bowling coach Mohammad Rafique were acquitted of all charges. As per the BCB’s anti-corruption code, which governs this matter, the next – and final – stage of the appeals process allows an appeal to be made to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.

Ramdin focuses on mental challenge

Denesh Ramdin, West Indies new Test captain, is convinced there is the talent available in the Caribbean to revive their form over five days

Denesh Ramdin, West Indies new Test captain, is convinced there is the talent available in the Caribbean to revive their form over five days but they must overcome the mental frailties which have happened there attempts to climb the Test rankings. He wants his team to play “smarter cricket” and is eager to impart his style of leadership and thinking, which he believes are the qualities the selectors have seen, on his team-mates beginning with the visit of New Zealand.”For the last six to seven years, West Indies have gone off the boil in Tests because our opponents have out-thought us more. We need to think harder as a team,” Ramdin told ESPNcricinfo. “The talent is there. The cricketing skill is always there but it’s more mental with us. Since my West Indies U-19 experiences and Trinidad stints as captain, I’ve always focused and prided myself on proper analysis of the game and we need to improve on this to move up.”Ramdin is confident that he will be able to deal with the pressure, expectation and responsibility the captaincy brings having been vice-captain for five years but knows it will be an increasing challenge to ensure he continues to focus enough time on his own game, which is already to the dual role of being a keeper-batsman.”Darren [Sammy] did well with the resources he had and many thanks to him but I’m relishing the challenge,” he said, before the news of Sammy’s retirement. “There will be ups and downs but I’m ready to balance it all. Over the past 12-15 months I’ve worked on my personal form and it remains the same – I want to help anchor the team and get the lower order to contribute more runs.”Ramdin was quick to pick out West Indies’ batting as the area that needed immediate attention. “We need to bat better in both innings in a Test and not just one. We must have consistency because we’ve been faltering with the bat too much.”Ramdin mapped out his vision for the team on the pitch and said he felt the wicketkeeper’s role was one that will benefit him in the captaincy. “I see a lot from behind the wicket – how the opposition bats to my bowlers – and this helps me in strategizing as it’s the best view in the house.”So now I have a more hands-on approach and more input to control things and to form tactics my way to get guys out based on what I see. This perspective would help in containing opponents and also, I get the best chance to assess the pitches constantly out there in the middle.”He sees the upcoming visit of New Zealand as a good litmus test as the teams are so close to each other in the Test rankings and because the teams have dominated each other in their respective home conditions over the past few years. Ramdin wants to overturn the losses suffered on tour of New Zealand, but despite beating them in the Caribbean on their previous visit has warned that they should not underestimate even though conditions are expected to favour West Indies’ spinners far more. With the captain involved more in team selection as per the recent mandates laid down by the WICB in accordance with the Pybus report, Ramdin said the door was open even to those who have been out of the Test side for a considerable time if they can show the required form. This is particularly pertinent for Dwayne Bravo, who last played a Test in 2010 (or even first-class cricket since last year) but was termed “one of the best allrounders in the game and a matchwinner,” who Ramdin “would love to have in the team as they have a great working relationship.” Last month Bravo spoke of his frustration at having been overlooked for so long.Ramdin also picked out Sunil Narine has having a key role to play in all formats, not just Twenty20, and said the likes of Bravo and Kieron Pollard can stake a claim for Test cricket although that will be difficult for the pair in the short term with Bravo currently nursing a shoulder injury and Pollard playing the IPL.For now, Ramdin is starting to look forward to the Test series against New Zealand – the second match of which is in front of his home crowd in Trinidad. “The first Test in Jamaica is Chris [Gayle’s] 100th so hopefully we can do well there and carry over the momentum to Trinidad. I am eager and happy to run out at home in front our fans.”

Ball change leaves England under cloud

A cloud of suspicion hung over the England team after umpire Marais Erasmus changed the ball due to “unnatural deterioration” during the West Indies innings in the third ODI

A cloud of suspicion hung over the England team after umpire Marais Erasmus changed the ball due to “unnatural deterioration” during the West Indies innings in the third ODI.Erasmus, clearly suspecting that the wear to the ball was due to factors beyond those expected when it is used on an abrasive pitch or hit to the boundary, exchanged strong words with the England captain, Stuart Broad, in the 35th over but did not identify any specific culprit. The match referee, Andy Pycroft, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the ball had been changed on the basis of playing regulation 42.1.2 – which comes under ‘Fair and unfair play’ – and that, as captain, Broad had been issued with a first and final warning that any further occurrence in the series would result in a five-run penalty and the reporting of Broad, as captain, to the ICC. As the series has now ended, that threat of penalty has disappeared. While the England camp denied any warning had been issued, rule 42.1.2 b) states that, when the ball is changed in such circumstances: “The bowler’s end umpire shall issue the captain with a first and final warning.”The decision infuriated Broad. He insisted any wear had been caused simply by England bowling cross-seam deliveries and complained that the replacement ball was newer and harder than the original one, thereby proving easier for the batsmen to hit boundaries.”I’m very confused as to why it was changed,” Broad said afterwards. “And I made my confusion well known. It’s not like the ball was reversing for us and they gave us a ball that was [only] 10 overs old. You saw Denesh Ramden got hold of it much better. The softness of the original ball made it difficult to hit and they gave us a brand new ball that was easier to hit.”Yes, the umpire said the ball had been changed for that reason and, after I bowled three cross-seam deliveries with the new ball, the same wear was arriving on that ball. So I said ‘Take a picture of that ball as well’.”I just saw no logic to it at all and I made my feelings pretty clear, as politely as I could without risking too heavy a fine. The ball at the other end was in a worse nick than the one that was changed. I’m baffled by it.”I don’t think they’re suggesting we tampered with it. They are just saying it was unnatural wear which may just be that the wicket was ripping the ball up more than expected.”Ramdin, whose 128 carried West Indies to within sight of an unexpected victory, also confirmed that the newer ball had been “a bit harder and came off the bat a bit better”.It is not the first time in recent memory that England have had the ball changed. Most notably, umpire Aleem Dar changed the ball during the Champions Trophy defeat against Sri Lanka, although on that occasion there was no warning and no public mention of “unnatural deterioration”. But, despite a plethora of photographers and television cameras at all international fixtures, no evidence exists to suggest England have been guilty of ball tampering.

Al-Amin takes five wickets in one over

A round-up of the Victory Day T20 Cup matches that took place on December 26

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Dec-2013Al-Amin Hossain became the first bowler to take five wickets in one over in Twenty20 cricket. His feat helped UCB-BCB Eleven to a two-wicket win over Abahani Limited.Al-Amin also became the second bowler to pick up four wickets in four balls in Twenty20s, Andre Russell having achieved it earlier this year for West Indies A against India A in Bangalore. The wickets were enough to restrict Abahani to 143, which UCB-BCB overhauled in a final-over finish.Off the first ball of the final over of Abahani’s innings, medium-pacer Al-Amin removed Mehedi Maruf. Two runs came off the next ball, and those were to be the last runs of the innings. In the next four balls, Al-Amin dismissed Nazmul Hossain Milon, Suhrawadi Shuvo, Naeem Islam jnr and Nabil Samad.Tamim Iqbal followed up the bowling feat with a quick fifty that set UCB-BCB up nicely, but they lost their way in the middle overs. Subashis Roy took four wickets but UCB-BCB held on, Arafat Sunny completing the win with one ball to spare.Tamim made 61 off 52 balls with five fours and two sixes, but it was Al-Amin’s day and he was the Man of the Match. The day’s second match was full of individual performances and milestones too. Anamul Haque scored a maiden T20 hundred, which helped Prime Bank Cricket Club post 204 for 3 in their 20 overs. Mohammedan Sporting Club, in reply, were bowled out for 45, with Shakib Al Hasan taking six wickets.Prime Bank’s victory margin was the third biggest, in terms of runs, in Twenty20s, while Mohammedan’s score was the third lowest in this format.Shakib picked up his second six-wicket haul in T20s, having taken 6 for 6 in the Caribbean Premier League earlier this year. In his first over, the second of Mohammedan’s innings, Shakib took three wickets in four balls to decimate their chase. He came back to pick up three more wickets, including the last two that sealed the game.Earlier, Anamul struck five sixes and nine fours to score 105 off 63 balls. He found support in Shakib’s unbeaten 57 off 28 balls, which contained six fours and three sixes. Over the course of his all-round performance, Shakib became only the second player in T20 cricket to take six wickets and score a half-century in the same game.

'The type of innings I hadn't imagined myself playing' – Tamim

After an unusually cautious innings, Tamim Iqbal hit out at his critics over the century drought and his pace of scoring

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur24-Oct-2013Tamim says there’s outside chance of victory

Bangladesh will look to bat out the first two hours of the fifth day, unscathed if possible, as they head into their most important day of cricket this year. If things go their way with the bat, it will be a remarkable occasion but they understand what lies ahead.
“I would be very greedy to say that it is possible to win but neither will I say that it is not possible to win,” Tamim said. “On the third day, we thought we were on top but that changed in two or three hours. It depends on how long this pair [Mominul and Shakib] can bat tomorrow. If our proper batsmen can bat for an hour after lunch then anything is possible. It has happened before in Test cricket.

When Bangladesh began the fourth day in Mirpur, they were in the familiar position of having to claw their way back into the match after having conceded a substantial lead, to New Zealand. In the past, their batting has not quite coped with the challenge, with some dodgy shot selection letting them down. This time, though, the often-missing backbone was evident. Newcomer Mominul Haque took the headlines with his second successive century and his partnership with the experienced opener Tamim Iqbal helped them wipe out the deficit.Tamim, whose naturally aggressive batting has let his side down in critical situations before, showed he could graft if his team needed him to, making 70 off 218 deliveries. He cut out the extravagant drives, there was no indiscipline outside the off stump and he hit only four boundaries in his innings.”We were on the back foot when we started the day so we had planned not to go for high-risk shots,” Tamim said. “If I was able to complete the job then I would have been able to do my duty. But I have done a decent job for my team; this is what they hoped for from me.”Mominul and I batted till tea. The type of innings I played I had not imagined myself playing. Usually when I am on 40-45 I take chances against spinners and reach the milestone. Today I picked singles, milestones weren’t on my mind. I batted for my team.”But Tamim did struggle adjusting to this approach, saying that he curbed some of his preferred strokes like the slog sweep. “It is hard of course. I love playing shots. At one stage the offspinner was bowling and there was no deep midwicket; the slog sweep is a favourite shot of mine, but I controlled the urge.”In Test cricket you won’t be able to play your natural game all the time. That was the situation, and maybe today I did the right thing. It feels good.”Despite helping his team out of a tight situation today, there were the familiar questions about a lack of a hundred in more than three years. Tamim wasn’t too pleased at the issue cropping up.”I did not think of any milestones today. This innings was for the team. In the first innings I was disappointed not to get a hundred. But so much has been said about this issue that eventually it is me who is being harmed,” he said. You people should understand that. There is a limit to everything, but everyday whenever you meet me I hear ‘the century is not happening’. Who doesn’t want to score a century? You have to understand that cricket is a mental game. These questions are an extra pressure for me so I would request you not to ask me these kinds of questions.”He had more to say to the media on the topic of his scoring rate as well. “If I play aggressively everyone says you are aggressive, if I play slow everyone says you are slow, so you people tell me what I am supposed to do. This has gone to an extreme now–if I play normally you say I am too aggressive and if I play sedately you say I am slow. What’s wrong with you guys? Just let me play my game please. Let me play my game.”

Duncan Fletcher to tour with India A

Duncan Fletcher, India’s head coach, will tour with India A for both of their unofficial four-day Tests in South Africa. The two matches are scheduled to be played in Rustenburg between August 17 and 20, and Pretoria between August 24 and 27. India A recently won a one-day tri-series also featuring A teams from Australia and South Africa.Cheteshwar Pujara, the India A captain, was optimistic about his side’s chances ahead of the two Tests. “Winning the ODI series has given us a confidence boost going into the four-day series,” Pujara said. “We played really well throughout that series, except for a couple of close games against Australia that we lost.”South Africa A had an indifferent ODI series, finishing bottom of the table with just one win in four matches. Their captain, Justin Ontong, said it was vital that his team regrouped and moved on.”We had a disappointing ODI series but in saying that I still think we played good cricket,” Ontong said. “It was particularly hard for the bowlers on those sort of decks, but I think we took a lot of lessons from that experience.”We are in a very good space as a unit,” he said. “Our four-day disciplines are where we want them to be. We are encountering new opposition, so it is a new challenge for us, and also a new opportunity for players to put in some noteworthy performances.”Both captains expect dry, bowler-friendly conditions, a change from the placid pitches at the LC de Villiers Oval in Pretoria that produced tall totals in the one-dayers. “If it turns, it will be helpful for us because we are used to playing in turning conditions,” Pujara said. “But let’s see how it will turn out. We know conditions in South Africa normally suit the fast bowlers. We will have a better idea of our playing XI once they have trained in the conditions.”Ontong, who is better acquainted with the local wickets, said, “We know this type of wicket is different from the HPC (Pretoria) wicket. As a batsman, you are never in. The seamers and spinners are always in the game. It’s going to be a huge challenge for the batsmen to construct their innings and put on big scores. Patience is going to be the key.”

Zaka Ashraf is PCB's first elected chairman

Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, has been elected to a four-year term, the first-ever elected incumbent in that office. He was elected under the new PCB constitution, which in February replaced the system of appointing the PCB chairman by the Patron of the board, the President of Pakistan. The PCB’s board of governors had its first meeting today in Islamabad under the new constitution. The nomination committee interviewed the two candidates – Ashraf and former Lahore Stock Exchange chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan – recommended by the Patron and unanimously recommended Ashraf for the chairman’s post.Thereafter, the board of governors reassembled and unanimously endorsed the recommended nominee of the Patron and the nomination committee. In 2011, the ICC required that its member boards become autonomous and free of interference from governments by June 2013. Removal of government interference had also been one of the Woolf report recommendations approved by the ICC. The new constitution was produced as a result of the ICC directive and was approved on February 13, vetted by the Ministry of Law on the suggestion of the PCB and ICC feedback. However, in November 2012, ICC said it was reviewing its stance against government involvement in the administration of cricket. The development was surprising and conducted secretly, the PCB revealing the appointment through a press release. Ashraf, who has been PCB chairman since 2011, was working under the old constitution, under which he was appointed for an indefinite period by the Patron, President Asif Ali Zardari. With the country’s general election set to take place on Saturday, a new government usually brings about changes in the PCB hierarchy. With his future as chairman uncertain, Ashraf implemented the new constitution in February and was eventually elected for a new term.

Lee to double up as KKR bowling mentor

Brett Lee, the former Australia quick, will double up as the fast-bowling spearhead-cum-bowling mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders for the forthcoming IPL season. Lee was happy to pick up the additional duties after Wasim Akram, bowling consultant at the franchise, decided to take a break this year.According to Venky Mysore, the Knight Riders CEO, once Akram opted out, the franchise deliberated about whether to go for a new consultant or look for inside help. Mysore said the team management felt Lee was easily best suited for the mentor’s job based on his vast experience as a quality international fast bowler. “It is about him taking more leadership role than anything dramatically different. He said he was honoured to take up that role,” Mysore said. The additional responsibility will not in any way have an impact on Lee’s availability during the tournament and Mysore said that Lee would continue to be one of the frontline fast bowlers for the Knight Riders. The IPL season begins on April 3 with the Knight Riders taking on Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens.
