Pietersen makes England return

Kevin Pietersen, out of action for England since March, is poised to return in the second of two T20s against New Zealand at The Oval next week

David Hopps20-Jun-2013Kevin Pietersen, who returns to first-class action for Surrey against Yorkshire at Headingley on Friday, is poised to make his England return against New Zealand next Thursday on his home ground at The Oval.He has been named in a 14-strong squad for two T20 internationals against New Zealand, but is only scheduled to play in the second match on June 27.Eoin Morgan captains a squad which includes two uncapped players in Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance and the Warwickshire fast bowler Boyd Rankin and which, Pietersen apart, does not include any player likely to figure in the first Investec Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10It would be his first match for England since the Wellington Test against New Zealand in March after which he broke down with a bruised knee bone, causing him to miss the IPL, start of the English season and the Champions Trophy.Pietersen will join the squad for the second match provided he successfully completes what will be a rare Championship outing for Surrey – back on the Headingley ground nearly 11 months after his complaints about dressing room tensions led to a prolonged stand-off with officialdom. The squad is also notable for the inclusion of Ben Stokes, who was sent home from the Lions tour of Australia in February after two breaches of discipline, and Alex Hales, who was disciplined but not sent home after an incident on the same tour and who has been so out of form this season that he has been dropped from Nottinghamshire’s Championship side.Rankin announced his retirement from Ireland cricket at the end of 2012 but, until he plays for England, could reverse that decision without serving any qualification period. Aged 29 in a couple of weeks and with a history of injury problems, his inclusion in an England team would be highly likely to close the door on a Ireland return.Geoff Miller, England’s national selector, said: “With an intense period of cricket coming up we are conscious that we need to manage the workloads of our players throughout the summer and this NatWest series gives an opportunity for players who have performed well in domestic cricket and on the England Performance Programme and with the Lions to step up and test themselves in an international environment.”New Zealand are a talented limited-overs side and with a World T20 competition less than a year away this series gives us a chance to look at a number of different options.”England squad: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Ravi Bopara (Essex), Danny Briggs (Hampshire), Jos Buttler (Somerset), Jade Dernbach (Surrey), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Michael Lumb (Nottinghamshire), Kevin Pietersen (Surrey), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Tredwell (Kent), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Luke Wright (Sussex)

Watson admits batting form a concern

Shane Watson has endured a lean series as a batsman in India, and hopes to start bowling again before the Ashes

Brydon Coverdale25-Mar-2013Shane Watson has conceded that he risks being dropped unless he can find a way to start scoring big runs again, after yet another disappointing series with the bat. Watson, who was the acting captain in the final Test in Delhi, managed only 99 runs at 16.50 during the Indian tour. This continued a long, unproductive batting stretch, where in the past two years he has made 627 Test runs at 24.11, and has not posted a century. His lack of runs was even more noticeable during this series because he had chosen not to bowl in an effort to stay fit and string together as much cricket as possible after an injury-plagued couple of seasons. Before the series, the captain, Michael Clarke, said that as a specialist batsman, Watson would face competition from a much larger pool of players for a place in the team, as compared to when he plays as an allrounder.”There is no doubt that I need to score runs,” Watson said at the end of the Indian tour. “As a batsman who’s batting in the top four at the moment, I need to score runs. Unfortunately, during this series I’ve scored nowhere near the [amount of] runs that I’ve wanted to, to be able to contribute to the team’s performance.”There’s no doubt cricket’s a performance-based game. If I’m not scoring runs or taking wickets, then you can’t expect to be picked. There are no secrets about it. You can’t hide behind anything, apart from your performance. In this series I’ve not performed anywhere near where I’ve wanted to. I’m looking forward to being able to continue to play and hopefully get some continuity with my game over the next few months, and be in some good touch when the selectors announce the Ashes squad.”Watson’s case for being part of the XI for the first Ashes Test will be strengthened by the fact that he is expected to be bowling again by then, and his medium-pace has a habit of providing breakthroughs at important times for the Australians. But bowling has also generally been responsible for the many injuries that have prevented him from playing even half the amount of Tests he could have.He missed all of the 2011-12 home summer of Tests due to calf and hamstring problems, and played only half of Australia’s home Tests in 2012-13, again due to a calf injury. However, Watson intends to slowly start building up his bowling workload during the second half of the IPL, and hopes to be in a position to bowl unrestricted during the Ashes, which starts in July.”One thing I have realised is how much I do miss bowling, and it has been a plan over the last two or three months to get my body to a position where I can get back into bowling again, and hopefully hold together for the cricket we have coming up,” Watson said. “There is no doubt coming here as a specialist batsman has not worked out anywhere near where I wanted it to.”It didn’t work in that regard, but in the end I am an allrounder, I love being an allrounder. At times it has been hard not to bowl knowing what I can contribute to the game. I know I won’t always be able to score runs or take wickets, but if I’m an allrounder, I’ve got more [of a] chance to contribute to the team’s performance and success. I have to stay on top of my body so that I can play the amount of cricket I want to.”

Home advantage with defending champions Australia

Defending champions Australia will take on England at Townsville’s Tony Ireland Stadium on Saturday to kickstart the latest edition of the Under-19 World Cup, in Queensland. On the same day, two-time former champions Pakistan play Afghanistan at John Blanck Oval on the Sunshine Coast, while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka face each other at Townsville’s Endeavour Park. At the Allan Border Field in Brisbane, Zimbabwe play Papua New Guinea. The biennial competition features 16 teams, including the 10 Full Members of the ICC and six qualifiers (Afghanistan, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Scotland). The teams are divided into four groups of four each, with the top two from each group qualifying for the quarter-finals. The bottom two from each group will compete in the Plate Championship. The grand final will be played at Tony Ireland Stadium on August 26.Australia captain William Bosisto said his side cannot expect an easy journey, despite playing at home. Australia have won the tournament a record three times. “I wouldn’t necessarily say that Australia is a firm favourite in any way,” Bosisto said. “I think we see ourselves as having a very good chance to win the title, and hopefully we can do everything in our power to do that. But I know there will be many strong sides from the subcontinent, and obviously England, so we know there is a lot of tough competition out there.”England last won the title in 1998, under Owais Shah, and the captain Adam Ball said consistency is the key.”It is definitely time for England to add to that previous success,” Ball said. “It will be very tough for us to repeat that but I feel the team has what it takes to do so. I think Australia have to be one of the favourites as they are playing in their own country and have won the tournament several times before. I also think that Pakistan will be a very hard team to beat even in conditions that may not favour them.”Pakistan captain Babar Azam said his team’s chances will depend on how soon they adapt to the conditions.”I think we are one of the tournament favourites as we bat deep, have a couple of good allrounders and also possess a few quality fast bowlers and spinners in the side,” Azam said. “Moreover, our recent performance at the international level is encouraging so I think our team could be termed as favourites alongside some other teams. However, it will all depend on how quickly we adjust to the conditions in Australia. We all know that pitches and outfields in Australia are very hard and there is extra bounce on the pitches.”South Africa have never won the tournament, though they came close in 2008 in Malaysia, finishing as the runners-up. They open their campaign on Sunday, against Bangladesh.”This squad has been on a two-year progression plan for this event,” the captain Chad Bowes said. “We have arrived in Australia to play good, solid cricket and we believe that we have the potential to be the first South Africa side to win the U-19 World Cup.”

Warner to switch-hit Swann

David Warner has promised to turn his savage switch-hit on England in the forthcoming ODI series, and believes Graeme Swann may not be the only spinner he will have the chance to try it against

David Warner has promised to turn his savage switch-hit on England in the forthcoming ODI series, and believes Graeme Swann may not be the only spinner he will have the chance to try it against. Following a sprightly 74 for the Australians in their opening tour match against Leicestershire at Grace Road, Warner predicted the inclusion of Samit Patel beside Swann in England’s preferred XI for the five-match series.Alongside Kevin Pietersen, now retired from ODIs and Twenty20 internationals, Warner has shown a penchant for switch-hitting that has challenged the game’s bowlers – not to mention lawmakers – in adapting to the audacious change of stance as a spinner delivers the ball. He first showed its effectiveness in T20 club competition, before unleashing it on India’s R Ashwin in limited-overs matches in Australia last summer. Should Alastair Cook hand the ball to Swann at a time when Warner is at the crease, Australia’s combative opener suggested he would not take long in abandoning orthodoxy.”If I get the opportunity and they’re willing to put Swanny on early, I’ll definitely be playing the switch-hit,” Warner said. “It has to be a period in the game where it’s necessary for me to play it. If I find I’m bogged down a little or if I find there’s a scoring shot or I want to move a fielder, I’ll play that shot so he has two men behind point.”That’s in the back of my mind, what I want to do to manipulate the field how I want to work it. I think they might play two spinners against us, I think Patel will come in and they might only play three quicks. So it depends where we’re playing as well, but that’s what I think they’re going to do and obviously the switch-hit probably might come out.”England’s management showed their wariness of Australia, meanwhile, by dispatching the video analyst Gemma Broad to Leicester to take footage of the touring bowlers. She paid particular attention to getting a striker’s-eye-view of the young Victorian fast man James Pattinson in his two-over burst with the new ball at the start of the Leicestershire innings.Such eye-level footage is of the kind used in both England and Australia for the use of the Pro-Batter device, which projects a bowler’s action onto a screen before firing a ball from a bowling machine at a point of delivery calibrated to match that of the real thing, thus recreating the feeling of facing an opponent. Well-versed as he is with the level of analysis now taking place on both sides, Warner was not concerned by Broad’s presence.”Just think it’s giving her something to do actually, to be honest,” he said. “That’s what happens, we get all the footage anyway, it doesn’t matter … she’s probably just doing some extra work. There’s a data program around the world that all the countries get and we use anyway, so there’s nothing that we haven’t seen before.”She’d definitely be trying to get some extra footage of us in these conditions. Definitely some of us never playing before in England so they probably want a bit of footage for us, but at the end of the day they’ve got to stand up at their mark and bowl at us.”Having opened up with the wicketkeeper Matthew Wade at Grace Road, Warner was unsure whether Wade or Shane Watson would accompany him at the top of the order in the ODIs against England, or the one-off match against Ireland on Saturday that precedes them. However he felt confident of his adjustment to softer English surfaces after looking comfortable at the crease in Australia’s first match of the tour.”Obviously for my game it’s trying to pull it in a little bit because it does a lot early, especially in Durham it’s going to in the morning,” Warner said. “But I have to keep going about my game how I do, and if it requires adjustment then I’m going to adjust.”

O passado me condena, uma desgraça, né?

Desempenho do Flamengo

Primeiro tempo ficou aberto, transição e contra-ataque, o que favorece o jovem time do Santos.

USACA admonished over handling of women's team

Pressure is mounting on the USA Cricket Association to get its internal affairs in order following a strongly worded mail from ICC Americas regional development manager Martin Vieira over its recent handling of the USA women’s team. It has also been rapped for its failure to meet an ICC administrative deadline in the build-up to next month’s ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh. The email, a copy of which is with ESPNcricinfo, was from Vieira to USACA general manager Manaf Mohamed. In it Vieira raised USA’s failure to send a provisional World Cup squad of 18 players to the ICC despite repeated reminders from ICC development officer David Thorley. All provisional squads were due to be submitted to the ICC on September 30 but, according to an email from Thorley, USA is the only country to have failed to comply with the deadline. The last time USACA made any communication to the ICC regarding the women’s team was on September 19.The majority of the squad is locked in a dispute with USACA after refusing to accept the tour stipend they’ve been offered due to the fact that it’s significantly less than what the men’s team receives. Adding to the instability is the replacement of the team coach Linden Fraser with former India allrounder Robin Singh.”If USACA is not concerned let me be frank and say the email below from David Thorley is an absolute disgrace to the Americas region,” Vieira wrote in an email dated October 12. He further admonished USACA over their failure to hold a proper line of communication with officials at ICC headquarters in Dubai about the status of the women’s team. “The region’s image is being tarnished by the poor communication coming from your national association.”Vieira said the ICC Americas regional office had invested a lot of time, money, coaching and other resources to help prepare the USA squad for the tournament in an effort to avoid the embarrassment of repeating the fate of Bermuda, the lone representative from the Americas region at the Women’s World Cup Qualifier in 2008. Bermuda lost all five of their games to finish last, including a shocking performance against South Africa when they were bowled out for 13.However, Vieira fears that all the efforts from members of his Toronto office that went toward helping the USA women’s squad might be wasted due to squabbling and infighting taking place at USACA.”Now just days away from departure we are hearing about problems with teams that can only mean a less than desirable result. Coaches are replaced and the rumours have up to 12 players refusing to go and will be replaced,” Vieira wrote. “I urge you and the USACA executive to take a close look at this issue and give this team and women’s cricket the attention it deserves. In my opinion countries in this region do not have the depth to select ‘B’ squads to represent them at this level.”The USA women’s squad was scheduled to hold a training camp in Florida this weekend. A final 14-player squad must be submitted to the ICC by Saturday, October 15.
