Jacques Rudolph came within a run of celebrating his return to the Yorkshire ranks with a century as bottom-placed Hampshire endured another difficult day at the Rose Bowl.South African Rudolph, who only rejoined the club last week, seemed sure to score the 43rd century of his first-class career until he drove spinner Imran Tahir to short mid-wicket where Dominic Cork clutched a low catch.Rudolph’s dismissal after 211 balls and 11 fours and a six came as a surprise because the tidy left hander had offered no hint of a chance until then. His dismissal was a rare moment of success for Hampshire as Yorkshire, after winning the toss, finished on a respectable 318 for three at the end of the first day from 105 overs.Left-arm pace bowler Chris Wood promised much for Hampshire in his opening spell in which all his first seven overs were maidens. Wood also took a wicket, that of Rudolph’s opening partner Joe Sayers who edged him to wicketkeeper Michael Bates after managing just eight from 50 balls.Yorkshire went into the match without Tim Bresnan, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow – all on international duty – but they were not missed as Yorkshire quickly got on top.Rudolph and his captain, Andrew Gale took the match away from Hampshire with a stand of 129 for the second wicket in 32 overs. Rudolph reached his 50 with a six over mid-wicket against Danny Briggs before Hampshire made their second breakthrough at 149.Gale who had struck 10 fours in his 54, lifted Tahir to mid-wicket where James Vince held the catch above his head. There was no respite for Hampshire, still looking for their first win of the season, as Anthony McGrath joined Rudolph in another profitable stand, this time 55 for the third wicket.Rudolph was the third to go at 249 but even then Yorkshire maintained a firm grip on proceedings, McGrath now joined by Gary Ballance in an unbroken stand of 114 for the fourth wicket.McGrath was missed at short leg by Jimmy Adams off Tahir at 20 but went in at the close unbeaten with 65 in an innings so far made up of 188 balls and including five fours. The aggressive Ballance reached his half century just before stumps and was 50 not out with eight fours.Wood’s miserly start helped him to respectable figures of 1 for 42 from 18 overs while Tahir was the most successful in terms of wickets with 2 for 89 from 31 overs.

Phillips and Adams rescue Nottinghamshire

A record ninth-wicket partnership between Ben Phillips and Andre Adams rescued Nottinghamshire from the follow-on and should ensure the defending champions avoid defeat against Yorkshire

A record ninth-wicket partnership between Ben Phillips and Andre Adams rescued Nottinghamshire from the follow-on and should ensure the defending champions avoid defeat against Yorkshire. While half-centuries from Neil Edwards and Alex Hales had got Nottinghamshire off to a relatively good start, tail-enders Phillips and Adams still needed to add 94 to the home total of 291 for eight when they came together to make Yorkshire bat again. The pair promptly blasted 114 off just 16 overs to eclipse the previous club record against Yorkshire for the ninth wicket, which had stood since 1930, Adams caught for 54 off 47 balls after hitting seven fours and three sixes. Phillips finished unbeaten on 71 from 104 balls with eight fours and three more sixes as Nottinghamshire were eventually bowled out for 428, with Yorkshire 17 for none in their second innings at the close.Nottinghamshire began the day with a target of reaching 385 to avoid the follow-on, and in bright, sunny conditions opener Edwards looked in good touch as he rattled up his 50 from only 47 balls, with 10 smoothly-struck fours.Partner Mark Wagh was less confident and was bowled for 16 by Richard Pyrah’s second ball of the day – although the opening partnership of 88 was still Nottinghamshire’ highest since August 2008. Edwards was eventually undone for 64 as Pyrah’s sharply rising delivery was gloved to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, while Samit Patel edged his first ball just short of Adam Lyth at first slip.Boundaries remained plentiful as Yorkshire’s bowlers went at more than five an over, until Patel’s back-foot force off Pyrah was edged to second slip and Hales was forced to retire hurt on 28 after being hit on the jaw by an Ajmal Shahzad bouncer.Shahzad then had Adam Voges lbw on the stroke of lunch but the momentum swung again after the interval as Steven Mullaney and Chris Read put on 64 for the fifth wicket. Read was removed by a reflex catch from Joe Root at forward short leg off Adil Rashid, at which point Hales returned to continue his innings, passing 50 with a square drive for four. His dismissal for 59 came in brainless fashion, pulling a long hop from Rashid straight to deep square leg, and with Mullaney edging to slip for 49 and Paul Franks bowled by Root, Nottinghamshire looked deep in trouble.Phillips and Adams opted to free their arms and their attacking approach did the trick as Yorkshire proved helpless to stem the flow of runs until Adams’ skied Shahzad to Bairstow, with last man Luke Fletcher hitting three successive fours off the England seamer’s next over before he was caught at deep midwicket.

Murali will play even with discomfort – Bayliss

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss insists Muttiah Muralitharan will play in the World Cup final despite continued worries over his fitness

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2011Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss insists Muttiah Muralitharan will play in the World Cup final despite continued worries over his fitness. Muralitharan, who turns 39 next month, skipped practice on Thursday at the Wankhede stadium and has struggled with niggles through the course of the tournament, including a hamstring injury, a side strain, a troublesome knee and a groin issue. There was speculation that he would be rested for the semi-final against New Zealand in a bid to allow him time to be fully fit for the final, but he played despite not being in the best physical condition. The final will be Muralitharan’s last international game. “Chances are good that Murali will play,” said Bayliss. “He completed 10 overs in the semi-final, and such is the character of the man that he will play even with discomfort.”The fitness of allrounder Angelo Mathews is also a worry for Sri Lanka. Veteran seamer Chaminda Vaas and offspinner Suraj Randiv are being flown in as cover for the injured pair, but Bayliss confirmed Sri Lanka had not applied to the ICC to have them included as official replacements. “We have asked for them just to be on the safe side, but Muralitharan and Mathews will be given as long as possible to prove their fitness,” he said.Muttiah Muralitharan will play through the pain barrier in order to finish his international career with a World Cup final•Getty Images

Bayliss was bullish about Sri Lanka’s chances of winning a second World Cup title after their triumph in 1996, and suggested the pressure would be on India as the home team and tournament favourites. “We have played good cricket through the tournament and have done well against India in the past,” he said. “The pressure will be on India since they are playing at home, but we are familiar with the conditions in Mumbai.”If we concentrate on what we do the best then we can play some good cricket and if we play good cricket, we are going to be very difficult to beat. This match is 50-50 at this stage. Obviously, there will be a lot of pressure on India to perform at home. We have been able to do that in the last couple of games and come out with two good wins. The boys are quite confident about their chances in this World Cup.”Yes, we have played India on a number of occasions and have beaten them before on a lot of occasions. [But] it [the final] is a difficult assignment. In the last three years, we have played 35 matches and this will be the 36th one. We have beaten them on a number of occasions. Our guys are confident we can play well and win.”

Everton: Paul Brown drops Allan exit claim

Allan’s mooted Everton exit should not come as a surprise, journalist Paul Brown has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

TuttoMercatoWeb journalist Niccolo Ceccarini recently reported (via Sport Witness) that the Toffees could well put the Brazilian midfielder up for sale when the summer transfer window opens.

The 31-year-old is under ‘strong consideration’ at Lazio as they assess potential replacements for exit-bound Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Allan left another Serie A outfit in Napoli to join Everton in a £21.7m deal in September 2020, reuniting with Carlo Ancelotti on Merseyside. He has gone on to make 56 appearances for the club, including 25 Premier League starts this season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Brown doesn’t believe that it would be wise for Everton to hand Allan a long-term contract extension, particularly if he demands a pay rise.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’m not surprised he’s leaving and it would be foolish to stick him on a longer contract.

“He would probably want more in terms of a salary too, so it doesn’t surprise me that he will go.”

The verdict

To a degree, it would be a surprise to see Allan being sold, given the extent of his involvement in the top flight this season. With three starts in Everton’s last four matches, during which they have picked up seven points, he certainly isn’t out of favour under Frank Lampard.

Indeed, it was only this time last year that BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher was describing him as a ‘vital’ player for the club.

However, his contract is due to expire in just over 13 months’ time, so Everton may view this summer as their final opportunity to cash in on him. Come next January, Allan will be able to negotiate pre-contract terms with other clubs if he is still with the Toffees.

The Brazilian earns £70,000 per week at Goodison Park and, as Brown says, it may not be regarded as financially prudent to prolong that lucrative contract into his mid-30s.

Standard Bank to end sponsorship deal

By May 2011, three major changes to the shape of the South African cricketing landscape will have taken place

Firdose Moonda21-Nov-2010By May 2011, three major changes to the shape of the South African cricketing landscape will have taken place. A new national coach will have started work as Corrie van Zyl steps down and a new one-day international captain will take over the reins from Graeme Smith. Off the field, one or more new sponsors will take over Standard Bank’s deal which includes sponsorship of the national one-day and Twenty20 teams, all Twenty20 international matches and the domestic 20-over competition. On Friday, the financial institution announced its decision to pull out of all sports sponsorships when its current contract expires in May next year. It had pumped over R100 million (US$ 14.3 million) a year into Cricket South Africa (CSA), which included funding the National Cricket Academy, High Performance Programme, Schools Pro20 Challenge, Schools Development Programme and Under-13 National Cricket Week.Standard Bank announced its decision on the same day as a CSA’s internal commission of inquiry into bonus payments made to chief executive Gerald Majola revealed its findings. Majola was cleared of all charges of financial impropriety but will have to pay back R28,169 (US$ 4,024) that was spent on travel for his children. The commission found that Majola had made an “error of judgement” by not declaring the bonuses through CSA’s remunerations committee but the CEO escaped with a formal caution.CSA President Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka said there was nothing sinister about Standard Bank making public its decision not to renew its sponsorships on the same day as the investigation into Majola’s bonuses concluded. “The reasons for Standard Bank not renewing its contract with CSA are clear, they are economic issues,” Nyoka said.Standard Bank is also cutting ties with South Africa’s two most popular football clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, but insiders say there is more to the decision than pure mathematics. Rumours in cricketing circles are that Standard Bank felt it was not getting its worth from CSA, while the cricketing body was tired of coping with the Bank’s constant demands.CSA put on a brave face when the announcement was made and said that they have no doubts about lining up other sponsors. Vice president AK Khan said there has been “a tremendous amount of interest from other parties.” Early suggestions are that some of the existing sponsors may enter into Standard Bank’s territory. CSA are currently sponsored by Castle beer, cellular telephone operator MTN, and fast-food company KFC, but may look to engage another global sponsor. The hunt for a new national coach is also on. Van Zyl announced in October that he will be stepping down as national coach after next year’s World Cup and returning to his post as head of the High Performance Programme. He is part of a five-person committee that will seek a replacement. Also on the committee are Majola, Andy O’ Connor, chairperson of CSA’s Cricket Committee, and Andrew Hudson, the convenor of selectors and a representative of the SA Cricketers’ Association.

A gente fica contente.

NUFC: Magpies eyeing Ligue 1 attacker

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their efforts to bring a new striker to St. James’ Park before the end of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

BBC Sports’ French football correspondent Julien Laurens has revealed one of the players the Magpies are looking at as they attempt to add to their attacking options before Monday’s deadline.

He told the Sky Sports Transfer Podcast, via NUFCBlog:

“Mohamed Bayo, the Clermont striker. He is one that they really, really like. He is having a great season in France and has a lot of the qualities that are required to do well for a striker in England.”

Off their seats

This update will surely get Newcastle fans off their seats in anticipation and excitement as Bayo could be a brilliant signing to potentially end the window with if the club manages to land Bruno Guimaraes and a centre-back alongside him.

The Clermont forward has found his goalscoring touch in Ligue 1 this season, with nine goals in just 15 starts for the French outfit.

He has also provided two assists and is averaging 1.1 chances created per game, which shows that he has a creative side to his game and is far more than just a goalscorer in the number nine role.

His form in the top tier follows on from a sensational year in Ligue 2 in the 2020/21 campaign. The 23-year-old produced 22 goals and six assists in 34 games for Clermont as he led the team to promotion, with the striker now stepping up his game and delivering end product at a higher standard of football.

It remains to be seen whether or not Chris Wood will be able to hit the goal trail between now and the end of the season after his move from Burnley.

He has scored three goals in 19 Premier League starts this season, which suggests that Bayo could end up being the superior option if he is able to adapt to English football as his goal record in France is exceptional.

Therefore, Newcastle fans will be off their seats and excited about the prospect of the Guinea international arriving on Tyneside in the next 36 hours or so as he could be an excellent addition to the side. His goalscoring ability could help the Magpies to win more games in the second half of the season and Howe must push PIF to get this potential deal over the line.

Liverpool: Phillips wanted by Bournemouth

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips is attracting Deadline Day interest from Bournemouth, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

The lowdown

With the January transfer window nearing its end, the Reds have yet to offload any senior players.

Phillips was heavily involved in 2020/21 amid an injury crisis, but he has only made three appearances for the first team this season, with his only start coming on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool had already qualified for the round of 16 as group winners before they faced AC Milan at San Siro in early December, enabling Jurgen Klopp to make changes.

The latest

Joyce tweeted shortly before midday on Monday that Bournemouth want to take the 24-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign, with the Cherries also taking an interest in another Liverpool defender.

He outlined: “Bournemouth are looking to sign Nat Phillips, the Liverpool centre-back, on loan for the rest of the season. Phillips will have regular football and Liverpool will receive a loan fee. Bournemouth are also interested in right-back Neco Williams.”

The verdict

It was reported earlier in the month that Liverpool were willing to let Phillips leave permanently if their £15m demands were met, but either the Englishman’s suitors don’t think he’s worth that much, or maybe they simply can’t afford to shell out that kind of sum. Indeed, Watford’s £7m offer may be the best that the Reds have received up to this point.

Phillips showed just how good he is with what called Klopp an ‘outstanding’ performance at the San Siro, where he locked horns with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He would be quite a coup for Championship side Bournemouth, where he will hopefully get the same volume of game-time that he enjoyed at Anfield in the early months of 2021.
