Keep him! Liverpool fans want James Milner to be kept at the club

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to say that they want to see James Milner kept at the club this summer, despite the fact that his contract will have just one year remaining on it.

The Leeds academy graduate has made over 160 appearances for the Reds since arriving on a free transfer back in 2015, and has become a key cog in the side now challenging Milner’s former club – Manchester City – for the title.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

However, the 33-year-old’s contract is set to run out in 2020, despite some publications stating otherwise. This means that Jurgen Klopp will need to make a decision on what to do with the midfielder in the near future, or he could risk losing him on a free.

Liverpool fans have grown fond of their No.7 since his arrival at Anfield, and whilst he is getting on a bit, Milner is still a more than capable performer and a player who should be kept around, if the fans reactions on Twitter are anything to go by…

He hates us: Liverpool fans discuss Neil Warnock’s comment on Cardiff’s next fixture

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Neil Warnock said that he was thinking of playing the Under-23’s against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Warnock’s reasons for his comments remain unknown, although they came directly after his Cardiff side were beaten by Chelsea in controversial circumstances – Cesar Azpilicueta’s late equaliser was clearly offside, whilst Antonio Rudiger should’ve been sent off for a last-man challenge on Kenneth Zohore.

The Bluebirds were also denied a number of penalties, as Sean Morrison found his shirt being pulled inside the box on multiple occasions on a day where refereeing decisions may eventually send Cardiff back down to the Championship.

Warnock could also be looking to infuriate the Reds after he accused the club of ‘lacking class’ in their handling of Nathaniel Clyne’s move to Bournemouth in January, despite the Merseyside-based club reportedly promising the former QPR boss that the right-back would be a Cardiff player.

Given the fact that Cardiff are five points from safety, every game is crucial. As a result, Warnock’s comments suggesting that he could basically give in to the Citizens should be viewed as controversial.

Whatever his motives, Liverpool fans on Twitter haven’t taken kindly to the 70-year-old’s comments…

Ralph Hasenhuttl could have another Yan Valery just around the corner

[ad_pod ]

Southampton have had varying success since Ralph Hasenhuttl took the helm in December, although one thing is for certain – the Austrian has been a huge upgrade on Mark Hughes, whom he replaced at the end of 2018.

The former RB Leipzig boss has got the Saints playing a good system that will reap rewards in time, while he has also got the best out of Hughes’ fringe players like Jan Bednarek. He has placed a huge amount of faith in Yan Valery, who has in turn repaid him.

The former academy man scored his first goal for the St Mary’s Stadium outfit – and some goal it was – in the unfortunate 3-2 loss to Manchester United on the weekend, and he has made Saints fans forget all about the loaned-out Cedric Soares, who has not made a good start at Inter Milan.

Everyone loves a young player who breaks through to the first XI and makes the starting spot their own, and there could be more prospects on their way for Hasenhuttl, if the success of the Under-23’s is anything to go by.

The Saints’ development side progressed to the semi-finals of the prestigious Premier League International Cup on Wednesday night thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Spanish outfit Villarreal.

Goals from Will Smallbone and Tom O’Connor were enough to see the young Saints through and boss Radhi Jaidi was ecstatic after the crucial victory, saying:

“A great win. A great performance.

“They showed a huge amount of will to achieve something for themselves and for the club.

“They did it tonight. Credit to their concentration levels at the end. They showed a huge amount of commitment and desire.”

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The result will be welcome news to Hasenhuttl, who has already shown his willingness in bringing through starlets from the academy to the first team – will any of the impressive Southampton Under-23’s become the Austrian’s next Valery by making the step up?

The scene is set for Steven Gerrard to win his first league title

Brendan Rodgers’ departure for Leicester City’s rattled Celtic’s comfortable season, as they’ve been left hanging heading into the Scottish Premiership finale.

While former boss Neil Lennon’s been reappointed to steady the ship, Rangers could be the biggest beneficiary from Rodgers’ untimely move.

With eight games still left, Rangers are quite far off their rivals, being eight points adrift of the top spot. That being said, the departure of such an influential manager’s certain to have an adverse effect on the players. They’ll now have to change their style to suit Lennon’s philosophy and this awkward change could affect key results ahead.

The Bhoys’ next fixtures include a tricky trip to Heart of Midlothian and against Aberdeen. If they’re to drop points in those games, Rangers could climb back to turn up the heat behind them. The Old firm derby’s scheduled to take place at the end of March, and the last time Rangers defeated the Celts at Celtic Park was way back in 2010.

However, The Gers are a rejuvenated unit under Steven Gerrard, who has instilled heart and soul into their gameplay, which allowed them to stun Celtic earlier this season. If Neil Lennon doesn’t get up and running quickly, the pressure could end up crumbling Celtic’s comfortable momentum.

The chances might be low, but Rangers will be eying the title after this untimely roadblock in Celtic’s campaign. The Gers need to win all their games themselves and hope Celtic slip-up, allowing them to create history under Gerrard.

Southampton’s Angus Gunn shares funny game day face

Since the suspension of the football season players have come up with a number of challenges on social media, either to display their skills or play along in a funny trend.

The most recent example is the #gamefacechallenge, in which footballers pick their funniest or most awkward pose they have struck on a matchday.

[ad_pod ]

Phil Jones would undoubtedly be the winner if a champion was to be decided as a quick google image search unveils a plethora of hilarious grimaces, but Southampton’s Angus Gunn has posted a credible attempt too on his Instagram stories, on his Instagram page.

The 24-year-old picked one out from a warm-up at some point in his Saints career. He appears to be throwing a ball but seems to be exerting himself while doing so – at least that is the impression his face gives off.

The keeper has nominaed teammates James Ward-Prowse and Danny Ings to do the same so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that.

Both should come up with solid attempts given how often they strike the ball, particularly Ward-Prowse who often displays intense concentration when delivering a free-kick.

Unfortunately for Gunn he probably doesn’t have too many photos to choose from due to his limited appearances this season, with Alex McCarthy taking his place in the team after 10 league games.

Elsewhere, several Southampton fans were delighted with this signing back in 2018…

Sunderland can turn themselves around with Billy Sharp signing

It would be quite the move to make but Sunderland have been linked with a switch for Billy Sharp this month as the Mackems eye up a return to the Championship.

But is it a deal they should be making?

What’s the word?

A clear area of improvement for the Black Cats ahead of the final months of the season is in attack. Under Phil Parkinson, they’ve managed just 20 goals in 17 outings.

Moves have already been touted for Liam Boyce and Kyle Lafferty but fresh reports suggest a remarkable swoop for Sheffield United’s Sharp could be on the cards.

The striker has been a target for Leeds in the January window but The Chronicle claims the north-east outfit are also monitoring the situation.

Commenting in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Parkinson commented on the rumours, saying:

“We’ve seen those comments [from Wilder about Sharp’s future] and it has been mentioned by our recruitment team and staff because Billy is a good player.

“The club has tried to get him in the past and goalscorers like him are much sought-after. Billy has a good record, but we are looking at a lot of players.”

Era on the up

Parkinson’s tenure at the club has been nothing short of troublesome. Since replacing Jack Ross in October, the former Bolton boss has won just four of his games in charge.

Fans have already been on his back, asking for Kevin Phillips to replace him, while there is a large amount of animosity surrounding owner Stewart Donald.

The Black Cats are undoubtedly the biggest club in League One given their prior history in the Premier League but their fall from grace has been alarming following relegation from the Championship.

They currently sit in ninth place but for all their faults, they are still a point off the playoffs. That doesn’t tell the full story of a Sunderland side who has stagnated in previous months though.

Signing a man with a reputation such as Sharp, therefore, could be absolutely game-changing, not only for the club this season but also in terms of improving Parkinson’s tenure.

It’s clear Sunderland need more goals and they’d find no better man to do that than the Premier League marksman.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

This is someone with a proven record in the lower leagues, scoring 104 goals throughout his League One career in just 172 matches.

The 33-year-old has two Player of the Year awards at this level and has also been named in three Team of the Years.

If Sunderland have ambitions of turning around their fortunes under Parkinson, this could be absolutely perfect. Their defence is now more compact, conceding four in their last five, so all they need to do now is find a regular goalscorer. This could be their man.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are in the market for a player who could prove to be another disruptive influence…

Liverpool fans on Twitter react to yet another Harry Wilson free-kick

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans didn’t have too much to be excited about on Wednesday evening as Jurgen Klopp’s men fell to a 2-1 defeat away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

However, one player did give those on Twitter something to celebrate. Young attacker Harry Wilson, who is currently on loan at Derby County, scored yet another free-kick to get Liverpool fans either calling for him to be recalled or just simply excited for the future when he is back at Anfield.

Haven’t seen Paul Pogba’s latest strange photoshoot? You need to check out the video below…

The 21-year-old joined Frank Lampard’s side for the season during the summer transfer window and he has since been earning rave reviews, particularly for his wand of a left-foot that has become so deadly from set-pieces.

The Welsh international’s goal was his sixth of the season in all competitions for the Rams, although it couldn’t save them from also falling to a 2-1 defeat at Stoke.

The youngster looks to be a serious prospect though. Check out the best reaction below.

Arsenal should keep hold of Nacho Monreal for as long as possible

Unai Emery and Arsenal should offer Nacho Monreal a new contract before the January transfer window opens.

What’s the story?

According to Mundo Deportivo (via the Mirror) Barcelona are looking to strengthen their squad at left-back as the La Liga champions try to fill the void left by Lucas Digne as backup for Jordi Alba. The 32-year-old is believed to be on the Barcelona radar, along with Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno.

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has set his sights on an experienced player and Monreal looks to be the favourable choice. With 215 Arsenal appearances to his name in the space of six years, Monreal would be a good fit for the current Barcelona squad.

Barcelona will also be eager to improve on their recent Champions League record and the risk of a player like Alba burning out will become a real factor. Monreal on the other hand has been one of Arsenal’s most underrated players and his potential has been overlooked for some time now.

Offer Monreal a new contract

Along with Aaron Ramsey, a contract extension for Monreal should be seen as one of Emery’s main jobs this season. Monreal, who is in the final year of his contract, missed Arsenal’s opening round fixture against Manchester City due to injury, but has already shown, since he returned, that he will be an important player for Emery this season.

The Spaniard was one of the club’s standout players last season, scoring six goals in 38 appearances and was a nominee for Arsenal’s Player of the Year Award. Despite his age, Monreal has grown tremendously in experience during his time at the club. With the positions of Sead Kolasinac and Ansley Maitland-Niles still unsure, Arsenal don’t have any other left-backs. The consistency that Monreal brings to the team is hard to ignore and will be crucial in the club’s quest to get back into a competitive position.

The idea of bringing in a new signing remains an option, but within the current Arsenal squad the presence of players like Monreal or Laurent Koscielny is much needed and the type that Emery requires.

Letting Monreal go in either one of the next two transfer windows will just create further defensive problems for an already struggling back-four.

Tottenham’s temporary ground the UK’s most Instagrammed sports location for 2017

Much has been made of Tottenham Hotspur adopting Wembley as their temporary home this season. While the home of English football is undoubtedly a masterpiece in terms of design, many claim it fails to enclose the atmosphere and inevitably has the feel of a neutral venue.

It’s hard to ignore the statistics and they do suggest Wembley’s had an impact on Tottenham’s results. While they topped the Premier League’s home table last season, even finishing two points clear of title winners Chelsea, they’re down to sixth this term having dropping nine points at Wembley already.

However, Wembley remains the UK’s top sporting location for 2017 for Instagram users according to BBC Sport, and the fact it beat Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge suggests Tottenham fans should perhaps embrace their temporary abode a little more.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will feel confident in their chances of improving their record at Wembley when they host newly-promoted Bournemouth there on Wednesday night.
