City Ground

Key Information about City Ground

Nottingham Forest have been residents of City Ground since 3 September 1898, and it is situated a few hundred yards from the Reds’ old stadium – Town Ground.

It was named in celebration of Nottingham’s newly-awarded city status in 1897, and the famous stadium currently holds a great capacity of just over 30,000 making it the seventh-largest stadium in the EFL Championship.

The all-seater stadium comprises four stands; The Main Stand (south), The Brian Clough Stand (north), The Bridgford Stand (east), and The Trent End (west).

A history of City Ground

Just £3,000 was needed to finance the move to City Ground, and two-thirds of it came from Nottingham Forest supporters themselves by purchasing “shares” for just £5 each. The ground was not owned by the football club when they had the chance in 1935, with it being offered from Nottingham Corporation for £7,000.

A terrible incident occurred in the summer of 1968 when the newly rebuilt Main Stand was destroyed by fire which broke out during a First Division match against Leeds United. Thankfully there were no casualties despite an attended crowd over 31,000. The fire started in the tunnel alongside the dressing rooms and it tore through the wooden construction of the stadium, destroying the club’s records, trophies and memorabilia in the process. After this event, the Reds were forced to play six home games at Meadow Lane; however, they failed to win there once.

The 10,000 capacity Brian Clough Stand was built in 1980 during the period of Forest’s iconic European and domestic success. The new stand featured 36 executive boxes and a large dining area with a plan to add a new dimension to the previous club hospitality arrangements. Twelve years later work began on the redevelopment of the Bridgford Stand to increase the capacity to 7,710.

The lower tier of this east stand was soon allocated to away supporters, and it can also accommodate 70 wheelchair supporters. Famously in 1996, City Ground was selected to be one of the European Championship venues, and the Trent End was notably rebuilt during the same year to hold 7,500 fans which took the grounds overall capacity to 30,445 which still stands today.

Recently, Nottingham Forest announced that an agreement was made with the City Council for an extended lease on the City Ground. This new lease means the club are now able to proceed with their plans to redevelop the stadium and surrounding areas. It is proposed that at the end of the current 2019-20 season, construction will begin on building a new modern state-of-the-art stadium to reach an increased capacity of 38,000 which would make City Ground the largest stadium in the East Midlands.

Tickets to Watch Nottingham Forest at City Ground

Priestfield Stadium

Key Information about Priestfield Stadium

Priestfield Stadium has been the home ground of Gillingham FC since it was built and opened in 1893. The stadium is located in the South East county of Kent, and it holds 11,582 spectators.

The all-seater ground comprises four famous stands; the Medway Stand, the Gordon Road Stand, the Brian Moore Stand (away supporters), and Rainham End.

A history of Priestfield Stadium

Gillingham Football Club, formerly known as New Brompton, moved into Priestfield Stadium in 1893, though it is unclear as to whether or not the ground was named after the road it was built on or whether the Priestfield Road was named after the stadium. The ground was officially named Priestfield Road until 1947 due to this mysterious question.

A record attendance at Priestfield Stadium was set in 1924 when 19,472 spectators watched the FA Cup tie against First Division frontrunners Cardiff City, and it was not until 1948 that this record was smashed by just over 23,000 spectators filling out the stadium to watch the Gills take on Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup once again.

Priestfield Stadium had not changed much until chairman Paul Scally arrived at the Gills. The most notable change came during the 1950s when the Town End was extended. One of the newest redevelopments of the ground was in 1997 when the brand new 2,600 all-seater Gordon Road Stand was built as part of a £2.2m refurbishment.

The Rainham End was demolished following the end of the 1998-99 season, subsequently, work began on providing a new all-seater stand which would house 2,400 fans with no visual restrictions as well as new catering and toilet facilities for home supporters. The redevelopment of the stand was completed in the summer ready for the start of the new 1999-00 campaign.

The Town End terrace was demolished in 2003-04 as it made way for the new Brian Moore Stand which was named after former Gillingham director and ITV football commentator. The brand new stand now holds a capacity of around 3,400, albeit for uncovered seats. In February 2016, the refurbished Blues Rock Cafe reopened as the Factory bar and restaurant which offers fans with hot food and drinks along with a number of brand new HD screens to watch live football.

Tickets to Watch Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium

Season tickets for the current season stand at £300 to £405 for adults, depending on the chosen stand. Senior citizens can purchase a season ticket from £265 to £335, in addition, under-18s/students can attend every home game at Priestfield Stadium for a fixed price of £125 no matter which stand is desired.

This is the same case for under-12s who can purchase a season ticket for just £30. Adult matchday tickets range from £24-27, senior tickets cost £21, and under-18s/students/under-12s can all attend for just £9 per game.

Sheffield United: First team’s gesture delights Blades fans

Sheffield United players have accepted partial pay and wage deferrals during the ongoing pandemic. Obviously, the squad’s decision has delighted loads of fans.

After the announcement that Chris Wilder and CEO Stephen Bettis have agreed six-month deferrals, all of the professional playing staff have all followed suit until the end of 2020 (BBC).

Football leagues are currently suspended due to the global COVID-19 crisis and some clubs are set to struggle with financial difficulties in the future.

The Blades announced the pay cuts will help alleviate the economic pressures the Blades are facing, and the money saved will be redirected to retain and support staff members all over the club.

Bettis publicly commented “first and foremost, our thoughts remain with those directly affected by the issues related to Covid-19.”

“This announcement follows positive and constructive discussions throughout the Club, taking into account the severity of the situation that the country finds itself in at the moment. I am pleased that we have reached an agreement with our first-team players, manager and backroom staff to help support the Club.”

“It is a difficult period for everyone, but our Football Club also needs to be taken care of and I’m delighted that the players want to mirror the gesture of Chris and the staff by contributing, it confirms that they care about Sheffield United.

The chief executive concluded that “the players should be commended, not only for this action, but also for their role in the #playerstogether initiative with other Premier League clubs.”

Although the South Yorkshire outfit only rejoined the Premier League at the start of the season, Wilder’s side have caught everyone by surprise, as they sit seventh in the top half of the table, two points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur, and close behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United.

Understandably, many fans responded to the latest update on social media, with one supporter cheekily commenting “cheers, son’s crying, nice one.”

Two Everton players who have let Ancelotti down this season

Everton have had a whirlwind of a season, feeling almost every emotion there is to feel in football, including the heart-stopping, gut-wrenching nerves of being sat in the relegation zone.

But the Blues have pulled it all back in magnificent style, clawing their way out of the bottom three to sit comfortably just six points behind sixth-placed Wolves. Not everyone has pulled their weight in this uphill battle, though, and here’s a look at a couple who are guilty as charged…

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Really shocking stuff to see how much the Icelandic midfielder has declined this campaign. When he joined Everton back in 2017, he boasted an impressive 10 goal and 13 assist final season with Swansea and was hailed for his impressive free-kicks and strikes from long-range.

However, the 30-year-old is a shell of the talent that caught Everton’s eye and this season has been a torrid one for both parties. Sigurdsson has registered just one goal and one assist in the Premier League this term, nowhere near on track to match last year’s 13 goals and six assists.

The skipper’s latest performance against Chelsea was nothing short of abysmal. Sigurdsson made no attempt to shoot, failed to win a single duel and attempted no tackles, interceptions or blocks. It was clean sweep of poor player performances in that game, but the Iceland international was the stand out underperformer. His football has been woeful and his attitude seems to be even worse.

Tom Davies

For a player who does a lot for the club’s charity, Tom Davies doesn’t make much of an impact on the pitch. The 21-year-old has earned himself a measly WhoScored rating of 6.4 so far this season.

His weaknesses have been identified as passing, tackling and discipline which wouldn’t be too worrying if he was creating goals or banging them in himself. But Davies has scored just one goal in 21 league appearances this season. So what is he actually bringing to this Everton side?

He has started 15 Premier League games this term, playing the full 90 minutes on 12 occasions. Carlo Ancelotti must see something in him in order for Davies to have retained his place in the lineup, but as the transfer window approaches, he will need to start thinking about fighting for a starting position. There’s only so far being a ‘young, local lad’ can carry you.

Everton fans, do you agree with the above or are there other players who just haven’t pulled their weight this season?

Liverpool fans react to Pedro Chirivella’s display against Aston Villa

It was a difficult evening for Liverpool’s youngsters against Aston Villa on Tuesday.

Well, that’s what the 5-0 scoreline will tell you. In reality, the Reds were far better than that. They actually managed more shots than their opponents, and also had 58% possession of the ball. Not bad for the youngest team in the club’s history.

At 22 years of age, Pedro Chirivella was the oldest player for the Anfield outfit, and the most experienced one as well – this was the 60th professional appearance of his career to date. Perhaps in recognition of that, he was given the captain’s armband by Neil Critchley.

This decision garnered plenty of reaction from the club’s supporters.

Of course, Chirivella was the player who caused Liverpool to be fined following their match against MK Dons in a previous round. He was ineligible to play, but still took to the field anyway. It is some turnaround for him to now lead the club out at Villa Park.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

Many fans were impressed with his display.

With a SofaScore rating of 7.2, whilst also managing two key passes, he definitely stood out.

There were a few fans, such as the one below, who hoped that this would now earn him a move so that he can kickstart his career.

Indeed, at 22 years of age, he really should find himself a settled home where he can play on a regular basis. On this display, there should be some takers in the near future.

In other news, Tony Cascarino says this Liverpool winger would be a good fit for the Reds.

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk could play against Crystal Palace

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could have both Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk available to feature against Crystal Palace, according to the Express.

Salah has been suffering with an ankle injury since playing Leicester in early October and hobbled off against Manchester City in the latter stages with a similar injury.

The Egyptian didn’t join up with his teammates on international duty as he attempted to rest his ankle ahead of a hectic winter fixture schedule for the European champions.

While his form has still been good, it’s an injury Salah has had to manage carefully, as he missed the clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford because of ankle problem.

Centre-back Virgil Van Dijk should be available for the clash at Selhurst Park, despite missing the Netherlands’ fixture against Estonia.

The Dutchman pulled out of the game for ‘personal reasons’ after playing the full 90 minutes against Northern Ireland, helping his nation to qualify for the 2020 European championships.

Klopp will hope to have two of his star players back in time for the trip to London, as between them they’ve missed just one Premier League game so far this season. Given their importance to the side at both ends of the pitch, having them available for what has proven to be a difficult trip in the past for title challengers (the Reds and Manchester City have lost there in recent years) is obviously a positive.

Elsewhere in the squad, Sadio Mane should be available despite being substituted at half time of Senegal’s latest fixture.

Despite initial fears of an injury, manager Aliou Cisse clarified that Mane was brought off to protect against him receiving a second yellow card.

Leeds fans buzzing with Pablo Hernandez update

Leeds United fans on Twitter are absolutely buzzing after hearing that Pablo Hernandez is back fit and ready for this weekend’s game against QPR.

The Whites have been without their talisman ever since he picked up a problem against Derby County earlier in the season, and they’ve struggled in front of goal since then.

Leeds have failed to score more than once in a game since they lost the midfielder to injury, so you can see why the fans are delighted to hear that he’s back available for selection.

Hernandez has a great chance of making an impact this weekend as well, as his return game will be against the team that boasts the second-worst defence in the entire division.

Whether or not the 34-year-old starts on Saturday remains to be seen as Marcelo Bielsa may opt to ease him back into the squad, but nevertheless, fans are happy to hear that he’s recovered from his injury.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Man United fans slam Victor Lindelof

Although Manchester United successfully halted Liverpool’s 100% winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League season on Sunday, some United fans have been airing their frustration at the performance of one player in the fixture at Old Trafford.

Victor Lindelof, 25, has started all bar one of the Red Devils’ nine Premier League fixtures so far in the current campaign, but the Swedish international’s latest display has drawn criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase, with one suggesting the centre-back is ‘out of his depth’.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjær aiming to get United’s season back on track and given the club’s recent investment in defence in the form of summer signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof arguably represents a weak link in the club’s backline, and some of the club’s fans have been letting their feelings be known on Twitter.

Whether Lindelof has a long-term future at Old Trafford remains to be seen, but for now, these United fans are certainly far from pleased with the 25-year-old.

Here are some of the best reactions to the Swedish international’s showing on Sunday below, featuring tweets from both during and after the match…
