Anya Shrubsole picked up 5 for 11•Getty ImagesA five-for from medium-pacer Anya Shrubsole helped England beat New Zealand by six wickets in the first women’s T20 international in Wellington. Shrubsole picked up only the fourth haul of five wickets or more in women’s T20 cricket, and the first in more than two years. With the support of Danni Hazell, who took 3 for 15, Shrubsole ran through the New Zealand batting after the visitors chose to field. She struck three times in the first six overs and nipped out two more in the 14th over to keep New Zealand to 80 in 20 overs. Kate Broadmore, with an unbeaten 27, was New Zealand’s top-scorer.England wobbled in their chase of a below-par score, and were in a tricky situation at 44 for 4 at one stage. But wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, who’s also opened the batting for England in the past, steadied the innings at No.3, making an unbeaten 31. She was assisted in a 37-run stand by Tammy Beaumont, who was not out on 17. The match was won in 17.4 overs of the chase.”We had a great start to the series today. We are all really pleased with our performance and to continue the momentum from our warm up games,” Shrubsole said. “All the bowlers did well today and were backed up with some great fielding.”I’m delighted with my figures and performance; it’s definitely a day I will remember. I’m really excited about the rest of the series.”

Comfortable wins for Canterbury and Auckland

A round-up of the HRV Cup matches that took place on January 8

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jan-2012It was a high-scoring affair at Rangiora as Canterbury overhauled Central Districts’ 188 to win by four wickets with nine balls to spare. Canterbury were helped by fifties by debutant Tom Latham, Rob Nicol and a quick-fire 30 off 19 balls by Brendon Diamanti to get them there. CD got off to a poor start when they lost Peter Ingram for a duck in the first over, but the experienced Mathew Sinclair resisted with an unbeaten 68. Ross Taylor chipped in with 31 before Doug Bracewell finished off the innings with a 17-ball 36. The Canterbury bowlers struggled to hit the right lengths at the death, but their batsmen were up to the task when presented with a tall target. Their openers, Nicol and George Worker added a quick 47 in just under five overs. A third-wicket stand of 60 between Nicol and Latham took the game away from CD. Diamanti came in at No.6 and slammed two sixes and three fours to guide his team home.An unbeaten 49 by Martin Guptill helped Auckland ease past Northern Districts in Mount Manganui, and put them in good position towards sealing a spot in the final. It was a walk in the park for Auckland after retricting ND to a paltry 111 and then winning by six wickets. Auckland justified its decision to field first, making incisions in the ND top order. All six bowlers chipped in with wickets, with Bruce Martin and Andre Adams taking three apiece. Corey Anderson top scored with 30 and the next-highest scorer was Daniel Vettori, opening the innings, with 17. Guptill anchored the chase, hitting five fours and a six in his knock. Vettori and Kane Williamson bowled well with the new ball, conceding 17 each off their four overs, but the rest failed to restrict Auckland. Auckland’s win gave them 22 points, four ahead of the other victors of the day, Canterbury. The match between Otago and Wellington at Basin Reserve was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Gostei do time.

Lorgat defends World Cup stadium preparations

World Cup preparations at several stadiums are still running behind schedule, but the ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, remains confident there will be no Commonwealth Games-style last-minute dash to complete the work. The opening World Cup game is five weeks away, but several venues, including Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which will host the final, are not yet ready.Last month, an ICC inspection team confirmed that Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens in Kolkata, had failed to meet the November 30 construction deadline, and if they weren’t ready by January 15, there could be no guarantees they would be handed over for the ICC event. That date has now arrived, but Lorgat played down concerns about the state of the grounds.”You’re probably referring to Kolkata or Wankhede,” Lorgat said in Melbourne, when asked about the readiness of the venues. “There are certain stadia that are behind our schedule; we would have liked them to have been completed [by now]. I certainly do not envisage, and all of our reports do not indicate, anything like what transpired during the Commonwealth Games.”The stadiums are slightly behind – there’s four in particular, I think – but we’ll be done before the start of the World Cup. Most of the stadiums are complete and ready. There are no alarm bells ringing. I’m sure that we’ll be ready well before the start of the World Cup.”The lead-up to last year’s Delhi Commonwealth Games was dominated by eleventh-hour efforts to get all the venues up and running, despite the city having had seven years to prepare. The World Cup is arguably more complicated in that it is being held at 13 grounds across three countries, and construction work is just one issue.Ensuring security at all the stadiums has been another major task for the ICC, but Lorgat said he was happy with the measures in place. He said the organisation had matured in terms of infrastructure and management of security issues, and a more robust process was in place than might have been the case in the past.”All full-members have now got a security manager and the ICC has got a security manager, unlike in the past where we might have been relying entirely on independent experts or police agencies to provide the security,” he said. “We’ve got quite a co-ordinated approach which has matured very well. I’m quite confident with the measures that we’ve got in place … that it will be well done.”

Liverpool vs Spurs team news: Firmino injury update

Liverpool will not be panicking despite the fact that Roberto Firmino appears to have suffered a setback ahead of the clash with Tottenham, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Big concerns

The Brazilian has been ruled out of action ever since he sustained a foot injury during the Reds’ 3-2 FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City last month, but Jurgen Klopp had previously claimed that the 30-year-old was ready to come back into contention for the Merseyside derby against Everton in April.

However, the German boss has since revealed that Firmino will be out for longer than he initially thought, and Dinnery, who runs the popular Premier Injuries site, has suggested that it would be wise to not rush the forward back as he continues his recovery.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-31/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Reaction to treatment

When asked about why he thinks the 55-cap international has suffered a bigger reaction than normal, Dinnery told Football Insider’s Adam Williams: “Sometimes things can take longer than expected.

“He might have been expected to respond in a certain way and it hasn’t worked out like that.

“It is a science but not an exact science. Individuals respond to treatment in different ways.

“If you suffer a setback or reaction, you need to make sure you return pain-free.

“They aren’t just thinking about the next game. They have got the rest of the league campaign and possibly a Champions League final.

“It is better to take that additional recovery time than rush him back. They are well-stocked in those positions now anyway.”

The Verdict: UCL final return?

Firmino has been a key player for Liverpool ever since joining the club in a £25m move from Hoffenheim in 2015, going on to make an outstanding 171 goal contributions in just 323 outings during that time.

Whilst the £34.2m-rated talisman has been a huge miss in recent weeks, the Reds have got plenty of cover in that department in the form of Diogo Jota, with Sadio Mane also thriving in a centre-forward role of late.

Hailed as being an “unsung hero” by BBC pundit Noel Whelan, the club will be hoping that Firmino will be available for selection again in time for the Champions League final on May 28th, where the Anfield outfit will be looking to get their hands on another piece of silverware in the hunt to achieve that unprecedented quadruple.

In other news… the Reds are set to battle it out against some European giants to secure the signing of a new target this summer.

West Ham: The Times share Pope update

West Ham United are seemingly eyeing a move Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope as manager David Moyes also sets his sights on three other major signings this summer.

The Lowdown: Moyes set for busy window?

As recently shared by Claret & Hugh, the Hammers boss will apparently have a ‘£150 million’ transfer kitty to play with this summer with Moyes set for major summer backing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes after a lack-lustre January window, where despite lodging marquee record-breaking bids, West Ham were unable to finalise any mid-season signings for Moyes.

Their intent, as per reports, is to make up for it in the summer as news emerges on just how many major signings Moyes personally wants to make – including the potential addition of a keeper who Sean Dyche branded a ‘monster’.

The Latest: The Time share interesting transfer update…

As per The Times, West Ham ‘could try to sign’ Clarets keeper Pope if they go down, as they now contemplate whether or not to make Alphonse Areola’s loan move from Paris-Saint Germain permanent.

Alongside sealing a reserve goalkeeper for next season in either Areola or Pope, it is believed Moyes also personally wants three more additions in a left-sided centre-back, central midfielder and forward.

The Verdict: Promising claim…

Moyes’ show of ambition for the next market could come as a promising bit of news for Irons supporters.

The aim from a West Ham perspective is to stay among the Premier League’s elite and continue their remarkable ascendancy against all odds.

To do that, however, new signings will need to come through the door at Rush Green for 2022/2023 – especially going by their current defensive crisis and serious lack of depth behind striker Michail Antonio.

In other news: £25.2m-rated forward could now be open to joining West Ham after failed Pellegrini bid, find out more here.
