Crystal Palace fans react as Real Madrid scout Sorloth

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Asistanaliz reported that Real Madrid will be sending scouts to watch Alexander Sorloth in action when Trabzonspor take on Besiktas.

The Spanish giants – arguably the world’s biggest club – have actually been keeping an eye on Trabzonspor goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır, although the story states that they will now also keep an eye on Çakır’s teammate Sorloth.

Crystal Palace let the Norway international leave Selhurst Park back in the summer, allowing him to join the Super Lig outfit on a two-year loan deal.

Since then, the 24-year-old – who cost the Eagles £9m when they signed him from FC Midtjylland – has been in exquisite form for Trabzonspor, netting an eye-catching 22 goals in 33 appearances while also grabbing six assists.

Worryingly for the south Londoners, they implemented a purchase obligation set at €6m (£5m) in January 2021 which means that the Turkish club can sign Sorloth for that amount – Palace look set to make a loss on their signing, and could potentially see him move on to bigger and better things with Real Madrid scouting him.

Let’s see how the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the news…

To kick off the reaction, these two supporters shared their thoughts on Real Madrid’s interest.

Ben Nagle said that he can’t help but think the Eagles have royally messed up with their handling of the Sorloth situation.

Talk Crystal Palace then expressed doubt that the news was true, although also revealed that they would like it to be accurate in some way.

Elsewhere, Tom said that Roy Hodgson, and anyone else who was involved in letting Sorloth leave, should be sacked immediately – a slight overreaction, perhaps.

HLTCO then simply described the report as madness.

Lastly, these two supporters decided to point out Sporting Director Dougie Freedman’s role in this.

Benj appeared to sarcastically say that Freedman is very good at his job having presumably been involved in negotiating the questionable terms of Sorloth’s loan to Trabzonspor.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

@CPFCLJT then actually decided to praise Freedman for finding the Norwegian striker in the first place.

Everton only have themselves to blame if Lookman leaves

According to The Mirror, Serie A giants AC Milan are hoping to sign Everton youngster Ademola Lookman before the end of the January transfer window.

However, The Toffees have so far insisted that the 21-year-old is not for sale, but will be bracing themselves for another bid from the Italian outfit.

The England under-21 international has struggled for game time so far this season under Marco Silva, managing only three starts in the Premier League. Two of those three starts have come this month, which gives the suggestion that senior figures at Everton were aware that the player was discontent. In order to placate him and avoid a move away, he has been granted game time. However, as they would have feared, there is growing interest in the winger.

Lookman had a wonderful spell at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig last season, and has surely caught the attention of a number of clubs around Europe. Snapping up young English talent seems to be the in vogue thing to do around the continent currently, and Lookman may be another name on that list.

Everton can only really blame themselves for this as well. They have already shown an interest in a number of wingers this month, which would have made Lookman feel even more dejected, as Silva clearly does not see him as an option at the moment.

Everton will surely want to keep hold of Lookman, but from the player’s perspective, he must feel unwanted at Goodison Park, so a move to a club with such prestige that wants him would be right up his street.

West Ham United fans want Hernandez booted out following dismal display

Javier Hernandez arrived at West Ham United from Bayer Leverkusen last year with plenty of promise.

The Mexico international was already well known to Premier League watchers having spent five years at Manchester United earlier in his career.

Hernandez garnered a reputation for scoring important goals, but that has been far from the case at the London Stadium.

In fact, the forward has only found the back of the net nine times in 40 appearances for the Hammers.

With Marko Arnautovic being the main man, Hernandez has had to settle for a bit-part role under Manuel Pellegrini this season.

The 30-year-old has only featured in six Premier League matches and is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the top flight.

In seven outings in all competitions, Hernandez has struck the back of the net once, and on Wednesday night he played 59 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup.

The striker failed to make an impact in the 3-1 loss on home soil, and the overwhelming reaction from the fans was that Hernandez is one of a handful who they believe should be shipped out.

Leeds United fans wax lyrical about Phillips following win over Rotherham

Kalvin Phillips has been a Leeds United player since 2010 when he joined the club’s academy from Wortley Juniors.

The midfielder has developed his skills at the Yorkshire outfit and looks as though he could become an important figure in Marcelo Bielsa’s team this season.

Against Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon at Elland Road, the 22-year-old played a pivotal role in the club’s 2-0 victory.

Luke Ayling and Kemar Roofe got on the scoresheet for the hosts, but it was Phillips’s performance in the centre of the park that caught most of the fans’ eyes.

Despite still being a young player, the midfielder – valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt – looked confident and comfortable on the ball.

He also provided the assist for Roofe’s goal and helped the Whites earn their third win of the season in the Championship.

After the final whistle, some fans on Twitter praised the display of Phillips, and a few likened the midfielder to some of the sport’s greats.

Villa supporters lavish praise on record-breaking midfielder

Gareth Barry became the Premier League’s all-time leading appearance marker on Monday night when he turned out for West Bromwich Albion against Arsenal.

The veteran midfielder has now made 633 appearances in the Premier League, which has taken him past Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs to the top of the list.

The 36-year-old has posted the record-breaking number following spells at Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and now West Brom, who he joined during the summer transfer window.

A large chunk of those appearances came during his time at Villa, however, with Barry appearing in 365 Premier League matches for the now Championship club between 1997 and 2009.

There are still some Villa supporters that have not forgiven Barry for leaving the club for Man City in the summer of 2009, but the large majority see the experienced midfielder as a club legend.

Indeed, it did not come as a surprise when Villa posted their own tribute to Barry on Monday night, and a number of supporters were quick to praise the former England international.

In Focus: Rafa Benitez ready to reject West Ham; right decision to stay at Newcastle

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has no intention of leaving the Championship leaders for West Ham United this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Irons manager Slaven Bilic is under pressure following a difficult campaign – the club has struggled to adapt to the London Stadium following their move from the Boleyn Ground, while there have been a number of disappointing performances and results in both the Premier League, and the domestic cup competitions.

The Hammers have also lost their last three top flight matches and joint-owners David Gold and David Sullivan are said to be demanding a top ten finish this season according to The Sun, otherwise the Croatian will be sacked at the end of the season.

While Benitez is understood to be one of their top targets should Bilic go, they may have to look elsewhere with the Spaniard not said to be keen on leaving St James’ Park.

How big a boost is that for Newcastle?

It’s a huge boost.

The Spaniard has managed the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Napoli during his managerial career and he will have the pulling power to bring in good players to the club should they seal their return to the top flight in the coming weeks.

Why would he not want to join the Hammers?

Benitez is close to leading Newcastle United to an instant return to the Premier League as they currently lie top of the Championship standings, and with backing from owner Mike Ashley and a passionate St James’ Park crowd behind him, he may feel that there is more potential with the Magpies as he looks to finish the job he started.

What happens if they don’t get promoted?

While it seems unlikely right now, it certainly isn’t impossible.

If the Toon failed to get promotion, Benitez could choose to quit the club in order to manage in the Premier League again rather than spend another season at Championship level.

He is also said to hold a respect for West Ham after they were gracious in his late decision to join Real Madrid over them in 2015.

Who are the other potential candidates for the Hammers?

Well, Roberto Mancini and highly-rated Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner are just two of the names that have been linked with the job, but it all depends on what happens in the run-in as to what the Irons hierarchy decide to do at the end of the season.

Not proven, not suited – can Arsenal’s £20m man thrive?

With Jamie Vardy seemingly on the verge of making a switch from Leicester to Arsenal after the north London side triggered his release clause, the deal could represent a gamble not worth taking for Arsenal.

He spearheaded Leicester City to a remarkable Premier League title triumph with 24 goals and six assists, and you cannot argue with the fact that he has been one of the stand-out players in season that saw many players impress.

All the acclaim headed his way, and rightly so, but it is important to restore some order amid all the frenzy. Despite scoring a bundle of goals last season and firing Leicester to the title, Vardy is not proven. The season before he scored a mere five goals.

On many occasions we have seen players impress in one season; for example, Christian Benteke scored 19 in his first campaign at Aston Villa and is now witnessing his career peter out at Liverpool. An impressive season does not necessarily mean the player will continue it on.

It is also important to remember Vardy is 29. He will turn 30 in January, so is a deal reportedly worth around £20million a bargain or a gamble, considering he has had only one impressive season?

Proven goalscorers like Gonzalo Higuain and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would have been better suited, and although they come at a premium price, they are of premium quality.

Arsenal fans have been crying out for a clinical, mobile striker since Robin Van Persie walked out the doors of the Emirates. Olivier Giroud has flattered to deceive on a number of occasions and went over 15 league games without a goal.

Theo Walcott has all but sealed his exit with a series of poor performances, and Danny Welbeck is neither fit nor good enough to lead the line.

So in a sense, you could see why Wenger is interested in signing Vardy.

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri has moulded the striker in a fine, counter-attacking phenomenon, putting opposition teams to the sword with searing pace and unerring finishes. Arsenal have needed a personnel of this frame, but do the Gunners suit his style?

Arsenal are known for their possession-based football, crafting open opportunities in style. Leicester though, are the opposite. Last season they opted for a counter-attacking approach, thumping the ball up to Vardy at every opportunity as they utilised his strength.

Unless Wenger adopts Arsenal’s approach, Vardy faces the real possibility of becoming a square peg in a round hole at Arsenal.

Although it does look like Wenger is far more flexible in recent years, adopting different tactics to suit opponents. And while it is unlikely he will change his philosophy for one player, it is possible.

He has already signed Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, a player who has an impressive passing range, which could be used to pick out Vardy, were he to join.

Overall, this represents a gamble for Arsenal. But they have been safe for far too often and it is time they take a risk to try and win the title for the first time since 2004.

Whether Vardy becomes a hit at Arsenal we’ll have to wait and see, but signs do not look promising.

PSG player ratings vs Real Sociedad: Kylian Mbappe is inevitable, but Bradley Barcola proves there is life without him as Parisians take Champions League stride

The star man took centre stage as usual, but his protege showed there is hope for the future as Luis Enrique's side established a first-leg lead

Kylian Mbappe was the protagonist, but young Bradley Barcola showed that Paris Saint-Germain might just survive without him as the Parisians' wingers grabbed the goals in a 2-0 first-leg win over Real Sociedad on Wednesday night.

Luis Enrique's side endured a disappointing opening period, but a controlled second half saw them ease past their Spanish visitors.

The Parisians had their chances in the first half; Mbappe scuffed his effort after running through on goal, before Ousmane Dembele lashed a shot into the side netting. La Real came closest before half-time though, with Mikel Merino rattling the bar from 30 yards out.

Mbappe opened the scoring early in the second half, darting in at the far post to meet a Marquinhos flick-on. Barcola added the second soon after, skipping past his man down the left before threading an effort through the goalkeeper's legs. Mbappe came within inches of the third with a driven strike from long range. The defence did its work, too – La Real didn't put a single shot on target all evening.

This wasn't impressive at first, but a strong second half has seen Luis Enrique's men take a significant stride towards achieving their unlikely Champions League dream.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Parc des Princes…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Made a couple of neat saves, and was otherwise untroubled. Surprising that he had such a quiet night.

    Achraf Hakimi (6/10):

Offered legs but not much quality down the right. Most of La Real's threat came from the other wing.

    Marquinhos (7/10):

Assisted Mbappe's opener, won his aerial duels, and kept the ball moving. A commanding presence.

    Danilo Pereira (8/10):

Completed all but four of his passes, didn't lose a 50/50 and looked assured at the back. He might be Marquinhos' ideal partner.

    Lucas Beraldo (7/10):

Preferred to Lucas Hernandez, and held down the left side effectively. Kept Take Kubo quiet for the most part.

    Midfield

    Warren Zaire-Emery (6/10):

A hardworking shift in the middle. Didn't do much in possession, but went about his defensive work diligently.

    Vitinha (7/10):

A buzzing presence in central midfield – especially after the break. Won the ball back with regularity, made things happen in tight spaces.

    Fabian Ruiz (7/10):

Tidy on the left side of a midfield three. Connected with Mbappe effectively. Assisted Barcola's goal. A showing that made a case for more minutes.

    Attack

    Ousmane Dembele (5/10):

Fired one into the side-netting in a waste of one of the best chances of the first half. Didn't have much of an impact in 90 disappointing minutes.

    Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Missed a good chance early on after being sent through on goal. Grabbed PSG's first with a tidy finish. Rattled the bar shortly after, and whipped one just over. Scary when he's in this kind of mood.

    Bradley Barcola (8/10):

A fantastic shift on the left. Did his defensive work effectively, competed for 50/50s, and took his goal wonderfully. His best game in a PSG shirt.

    Subs & Manager

    Marco Asensio (6/10):

Had a couple of efforts on goal, and kept things flowing on the break.

    Lucas Hernandez (5/10):

Tasked with handling Kubo – which he didn't do too effectively.

    Randal Kolo Muani (6/10):

    Almost scored a wonderful third.

    Luis Enrique (7/10):

Made a few interesting calls, including selecting Barcola ahead of Kolo Muani, and Beraldo over Hernandez. PSG were poor in the first half, and much improved in the second. Not perfect, but he will take the 2-0 lead.

Securing the ultimate prize in MLS will be a little trickier, as Inter Miami remain eight points off the play-off pace, but Messi has shown before that anything is possible when he is involved. He told after registering two assists in a 3-1 win over LAFC: “The group is growing more. I’ve been saying it since the beginning of all of this, we were lucky to get in a tournament and get to a final. Now, we’re going to look to hit the objective of being among the best eight to try and win the league. This is the way. We continue growing and obviously winning provides a lot of confidence.”

Inter Miami are now unbeaten in 11 games across all competitions since Messi joined their ranks, with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner delighted to see that run extended during a testing trip to California to face the MLS Cup holders. He added: “We had spoken about it before the game, that it would be a good test for us to see where we really are and what we’re capable of. It was a difficult place to play on against a very good rival, the current champions. We walk away with a very important result for what’s coming.”
