Another step in the advance of portable pitch technology

Portable pitch technology will take a significant step in New Zealand when the pitch for the first National Bank Test against England at Jade Stadium will be a portable pitch. It will be only the third time in a Test in New Zealand that a portable pitch has been used, and the second time in Christchurch.Last summer, in the second Test against Pakistan, the Jade portable saw double centuries scored by each side, Mathew Sinclair for New Zealand and Yousuf Youhana for Pakistan. The game was a dull draw. Before that the first Test in Auckland was a victory to Pakistan on the first portable used at Eden Park. However, with another year of development, New Zealand Cricket has taken the step of deciding to use the Jade portable 24 hours before the scheduled announcement.Earlier, NZC chief executive Martin Snedden said a decision on which pitch would be used for the Test match would be made tomorrow after the effects of tonight’s Super 12 match at the ground had been assessed. The pitch was to have been covered with an artificial surface to protect it during the match. However, NZC operations manager John Reid announced today that core samples taken of both the natural and portable pitches had resulted in the decision to go with the portable pitch. The samples had produced positive readings which suggested the pitch would have excellent pace and bounce.”The grass cover on the pitch is also outstanding, giving confidence that the pitch will provide very good playing conditions,” Reid said.”Given the sample test results we have decided to proceed with the portable pitch as our preferred option for the Test match at Jade Stadium,” he added.Jade Stadium turf manager Chris Lewis backed Reid’s assessment and is very confident in the quality of the portable pitch.Reid said: “We are acutely aware that the last Test played on a portable pitch at Jade Stadium did not produce a result, but all the indications about the portable prepared for this match are extremely positive.”We are confident that portable pitches are a technology that cricket needs to embrace if it is to successfully share venues with other sports and provide high quality playing conditions for the its players.”The New Zealand Sports Turf Institute carried out the sampling programme yesterday.

Another loan beckons for Woodman

‘The reality’ is that Freddie Woodman will leave Newcastle on loan once again next season, according to Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder.

The lowdown

The goalkeeper spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Swansea City, where he kept a league-high 21 clean sheets for Steve Cooper’s promotion chasers. The Swans reached the Championship play-off final, but it was heartbreak for Woodman and his team-mates as they were beaten 2-0 by Brentford at Wembley.

Nonetheless, Woodman was included in The Athletic’s Championship team of the season in recognition of his starring role. Despite his ‘hugely impressive’ performances, though, the door to the Newcastle first team is seemingly shut given that the incumbent Martin Dubravka signed a six-year contract as recently as the 2019/20 season.

The latest

Ryder says that both Swansea and the player himself are ‘keen’ on a return next season, although Woodman – who is ‘attracting so much attention’ – may have his head turned.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton and Scottish giants Celtic are now said to be ‘in the mix’ for the 24-year-old. Ryder noted that the Hoops first expressed an interest in Woodman back in 2018.

His colleague Mark Douglas had urged the club to sanction a sale for a fee of £15m, provided the deal included ‘smart clauses’ such as first refusal on future transfers or a ‘hefty sell-on’. However, it seems a seventh temporary departure (after earlier spells at Hartlepool, Crawley, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen) is in the offing instead.

The verdict

The likelihood of another loan for Woodman probably speaks to the weakness of the market right now, and it underlines the difficulties Newcastle may have in raising funds to boost a transfer budget which could be as meagre as £12m.

Still, a successful stint at Southampton or Celtic should only boost his price tag in time for next summer, while he remains fairly young and therefore could still attract a sizeable fee.

In other news, Newcastle are in pole position to land this forward.

Pep handed opportunity to axe Sterling

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to Real Madrid recently which, given his less than impressive recent displays, could represent the ideal opportunity for Pep Guardiola to get rid of the England international this summer.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Star, the winger is back on Real Madrid’s radar after losing his starting spot in Guardiola’s side in recent weeks due to his poor run of form.

It is suggested that, due to Sterling’s contract being set to expire in 2023, City would be able to demand at least £80m for the 26-year-old should Los Blancos make an official approach when the transfer window opens.

Should City cash in?

Sterling has been sensational for City at times since joining from Liverpool in the summer of 2015, with 113 goals and 86 assists for the Etihad outfit in just 285 appearances.

Whilst he has contributed 11 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season, his recent form has been far from good enough, as he has failed to find the back of the net in any of his last nine appearances in Guardiola’s side.

He has also been guilty of missing big chances and drifting out of important games, emphasised by his dreadful performances in the home defeats against Manchester United and Leeds United in recent weeks.

Phil Foden’s superb form has seen him move ahead of Sterling in the pecking order and whilst there is no doubt that when Sterling is on form, he is a top-quality footballer, it is hard to see him being selected ahead of the 20-year-old for any of City’s important upcoming fixtures.

Therefore, if Real Madrid are truly interested in signing him this summer, then perhaps City should look to cash in on him after his poor run of form, as the money from his sale could easily be used to bring in a replacement, whilst Guardiola isn’t exactly short of options on the wing in his first-team squad.

Whilst Guardiola once described Sterling as “remarkable”, there is no denying that his form in the past couple of months has been awful, so this Madrid interest may well prove to be the ideal opportunity for City to get rid of him before his value drops even further.

And, in other news… Forget Haaland: Man City should go all out for “incredible” 26-goal star this summer
