West Ham United fans hope Rice gets Premier League starts following cameo performance

A large number of West Ham United fans were less than impressed with the team’s display on Sunday when they kicked off their Premier League campaign.

Slaven Bilic’s side fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Summer signings Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez were handed starting spots, but none could affect the outcome.

One player who made an appearance was 18-year-old Declan Rice, who was brought on as a 61st-minute substitute.

The teenage defender impressed during the Hammers’ pre-season schedule, and his showing at Old Trafford attracted even more admirers.

Rice took to Twitter to express his views on the match and mentioned that he hopes to get more game time throughout the season.

Rice joined the East London club’s academy from Chelsea in 2014, and has so far made two senior appearances.

Bilic handed the youngster his Premier League debut on the final day of the 2016-17 season when the team beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor.

Arsenal fans hit out at Burley for strong criticism

Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has not held back on his assessment of Arsenal supporters, and as expected, plenty are angry with the remarks.

During an ESPN broadcast, the 45-year-old accused the fans of being “spineless” and accepting the “mediocrity” being shown on the pitch by the players.

It has been a tough week for Arsenal fans as far as criticism goes, as ex-Manchester United captain Gary Neville branded one supporter an “idiot” for holding up an anti-Arsene Wenger sign during last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Plenty of the North London club’s following are frustrated with the club’s lack of progress, particularly as they have not won a Premier League title for 13 years.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

Burley, who played for Chelsea for eight years during his career, was very animated when describing the attitude of Arsenal supporters this season. He said:

“I’m telling you, Arsenal fans: you are spineless. You are the mirror image of your team: weak, mentally weak. They follow their club across Europe and up and down the country in England, and they accept the mediocrity – and it is mediocrity, by a club of that standard, getting in the top four.

“Wenger at the moment – one: he’s getting paid well, and two: he’s either too ignorant or arrogant, to think he should not be moving on.”

Fans have taken to Twitter to slam Burley for his criticism, with many poking fun at the ex-midfielder’s playing career, suggesting that he has no right to judge.

Five reasons Aston Villa should do everything in their power to sign Adebayor

Aston Villa’s season is ebbing away. One win – way back on the opening day of the league campaign – has been the only highlight of the Midlands side’s 20 matches, leaving them staring at life outside of the Premier League for the first time.

Alas, the optimism in FFC Towers has not quite died out, and in this craziest of crazy seasons anything is possible – Leicester remain in the title race, after all. However, something needs to be done to quell the misery at Villa Park, and although it would be a risky move, perhaps luring Emmanuel Adabayor out of his somewhat self-imposed exile could work.

The Togolese striker, who was linked with a move to Villa during the Tim Sherwood era, was released by Spurs after the close of the summer transfer window, and has since been unable to join another side due to the red tape that so often haunts transfer dealings.

Okay, the 31-year-old may be a little unfit, he may have a questionable mentality and he’s likely to ask for a considerable salary, but he could be the double six Villa need with their last roll of the dice…

Where are the goals coming from?

Well, where are Aston Villa’s goals coming from? Unsurprisingly, the rock-bottom Villans are the lowest scorers in the Premier League with just 16 to their name, which has contributed heavily to their -21 goal difference – the lowest in the division.

Jordan Ayew is the current top scorer with five, but there is a feeling that the Ghanaian is better cutting in from the left flank, so that leaves the claret and blue side without a real presence up front, other than the immobile Rudy Gestede – he has only netted twice in the league since the opening day of the season!

Aside from the aforementioned duo, only Carles Gil and Scott Sinclair have scored more than once in the league, while centre-back Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott (one apiece) have outscored the likes of Adama Traore and Gabby Agbonlahor.

It’s almost over

We may only be at the halfway point of the season (one game over, to be precise), but many are already predicting Villa slipping into the Championship.

And it’s easy to see why, with the Midlanders having notched just one win – on the opening day of the season – which leaves them a staggering 11 points off of safety.

Despite the fact that they’ve amassed just eight points in over 50% of their games, there is still time on the clock, and in this topsy-turvy season three wins on the trot, although unlikely, remains possible, and a haul of nine points would suddenly change the look of the table. Fellow relegation zone-dwellers Newcastle notched back-to-back victories against Liverpool and Spurs last month, so anything is possible.

And with a striker able to put the ball in the back of the net, who knows what could happen.

Premier League experience

Like or loathe Adebayor, he has a proven record in the Premier League.

Spells with Arsenal, Manchester City and Spurs brought close to 100 goals in 230 league appearances, averaging out at almost one every other game, so going by that reckoning

Villa would be able to reasonably expect around seven to eight goals from the Togolese forward between now and the end of the season, which could make the difference considering their current top scorer has just five.

Short-term fix

Adebayor’s biggest problem has been his short-termism, but this sort of quick impact is just what Villa need.

There’s no doubt that the clock is ticking, so an instant impact would be ideal. Throughout his career Adebayor has specialised in scoring goals when he needs them, with his gluts often coming when he’s either just signed for a club or is fighting for a new contract, and both situations could collide at Villa Park if he’s handed a six-month deal.

One issue, though, could be his half-season without a club.

Haven’t replaced Christian Benteke

Gestede was mooted as the man to fill the sizable void left by Benteke’s £32.5m move to Liverpool, but the Benin international, although almost unbeatable in the air, has shown that he somewhat lacks he movement and mobility to be an all-round threat, as his Belgian predecessor was.

Although not as mobile as the now Anfield man himself, Adebayor has a little more to his game than a prolific record from crosses and set-pieces, which may be needed if Villa are to drag themselves clear of the trapdoor.

'He is crazy' – Lionel Messi backed to play through to 2026 World Cup as Lionel Scaloni admits Argentina are still 'built around' Inter Miami superstar after his evolution into a midfielder

Scaloni backed Messi to play 2026 World CupSpoke about the star player's training regimeScaloni could leave Argentina national team

WHAT HAPPENED?

The World Cup-winning Argentina manager firmly believes that Messi is capable of playing through to the next global showpiece in 2026, not least because the Inter Miami superstar is still capable of blowing his team-mates away in training. Scaloni also admitted the Albiceleste squad is still built around the 36-year-old, who has evolved into more of a midfield player in recent months.

AdvertisementWHAT LIONEL SCALONI SAID

Speaking to , the 45-year-old coach said: "Messi played with his heart in this [2022] World Cup, he was unstoppable. Seeing him up close is something impossible to describe, if I told you the things he does in training you wouldn't believe me. He's crazy. I told Leo that as long as he’s happy on the pitch, he should continue playing as long as he can. He showed us that there are no limits in football, and that is amazing.

"In his career, he started as a striker, he played as a winger and now we see him as a midfielder. He can play wherever he wants, and the team is built around him. I think he can continue playing for the National Team, but the decision is his."

Right after beating rivals Brazil in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, Scaloni dropped a hint that he could part ways with the Argentina national team.

While it is not certain as of now if the manager will leave the world champions, Real Madrid have already shown their interest in Scaloni as the club eye him as a potential replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, whose contract expires at the end of the current season.

Chelsea player ratings vs Barcelona: Magdalena Eriksson & Maren Mjelde star as battling Blues contain Blaugrana's superstars in UWCL

The Blues were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Barca at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the first leg of their Women's Champions League semi-final.

Chelsea have a mountain to climb to reach the Women's Champions League final after losing 1-0 to Barcelona in the home leg of their semi-final on Saturday.

The Blues were set back early on by Caroline Graham Hansen's wonderstrike, a goal that was worthy of being the difference on the day.

Guro Reiten had the ball in the back of the net for what appeared to be an equaliser but she was denied by the offside flag and, after that, the hosts didn't create too much.

Barca could've had a second late on when Marta Torrejon hit the post with a header but they will still be pleased with the result ahead of their home leg at Camp Nou on Thursday.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ann-Katrin Berger (7/10):

Had a couple of stand-out moments in the game, including some great goalkeeping to deny Graham Hansen in the first half and a strong stop from a Fridolina Rolfo shot in the second. Could do nothing about the goal.

    Eve Perisset (6/10):

Was quite solid at the back, kept Salma Paralluelo quiet and dealt well with the change in formation.

    Maren Mjelde (7/10):

Was Chelsea's stand-out performer on the day. Did well against both Graham Hansen and Paralluelo in two dangerous situations in the box and also made a great block to deny the latter early in the second half.

    Magdalena Eriksson (7/10):

Was a strong performer in the centre of defence, too, with her and Mjelde doing well as a partnership to limit Barca.

    Jess Carter (5/10):

Struggled to contain Graham Hansen, as any player would. Changes in formation meant gaps often appeared on the left-hand side between her and Niamh Charles.

    Niamh Charles (5/10):

Seemed to be caught between switches in formation when Graham Hansen scored and got nowhere near her.

    Midfield

    Erin Cuthbert (6/10):

A threat with her passing range and vision when she was able to get on the ball but it was difficult to break Barca down.

    Melanie Leupolz (5/10):

Struggled to have a real influence on the game before being subbed off towards the end of the game.

    Jelena Cankovic (5/10):

Didn't have a particularly bad game but struggled to really get into things and was subbed off at half-time.

    Attack

    Sam Kerr (6/10):

Linked up well with Reiten and gave Barca's centre-backs something to think about but Chelsea didn't create much that Kerr could benefit from.

    Guro Reiten (6/10):

Linked up well with Kerr in the first half and should've scored when Lucy Bronze blocked her shot on the line. She did have the ball in the back of the net in the first half but was offside.

    Subs & Manager

    Lauren James (5/10):

Brought on at half-time and had an early sight of goal from range, but didn't really catch it as she'd like. Struggled to get on the ball and run at the Barca defence.

    Sophie Ingle (5/10):

Came on for Cuthbert with just over 20 minutes to go but wasn't able to influence play much as Barca started to gain more control.

    Jessie Fleming (N/A):

Came on with only a few minutes to play.

    Pernille Harder (N/A):

Made a welcome return from injury with her first appearance since November, but came on too late to make an impact on the game.

    Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (N/A):

Came on with only a few minutes left to play.

    Emma Hayes (6/10):

Facing Barcelona is one of the toughest tasks for any manager in world football but Chelsea will go to an intimidating Camp Nou next week still in with a shot of making the final. Emma Hayes set her team up in a way that meant they were not overwhelmed by the Catalans and they did create a few chances early on. But the second half saw the visitors gain more control with Hayes' subs unable to stop that.

TABELA
>Veja a classificação do Campeonato Brasileiro

Read and Patel repel Yorkshire's push

A match that had been made particularly memorable by a trio of contrasting centurions on its first three days was saved by a collective display of grit from Nottinghamshire’s middle order on the final afternoon

Paul Edwards at Trent Bridge22-Apr-2015
ScorecardChris Read, as he so often has in the past, scored runs when Nottinghamshire needed them•Getty ImagesA match that had been made particularly memorable by a trio of contrasting centurions on its first three days was saved by a collective display of grit from Nottinghamshire’s middle order on the final afternoon. None of the six batsmen who got to the crease on Wednesday passed three figures but all of them made some sort of contribution to denying Yorkshire victory in a game between two sides who can already regard themselves as title contenders.Yorkshire’s bowlers strove mightily to take wickets with the sort of frequency that would give them time to chase a target, but this pitch helped attacks while the ball was new and rarely at other times. Yorkshire’s five seamers did not lack for effort or motivation, particularly in the first half of the day, when the cricket was a credit to the English professional game. But Andrew Gale’s bowlers were met with resolution, particularly from Samit Patel, whose 114-ball 76 was responsible for extending Nottinghamshire’s lead either side of lunch, and also from Chris Read, who is so much a part of the fabric at Trent Bridge fabric that you could almost believe that he has had to step out of one of the famous photographs on the pavilion walls in order to come out to bat.Read was 83 not out when the game ended at 4.50 and his unbroken 109-run stand for the eighth wicket with Vernon Philander finally slammed the door in the face of Gale’s bowlers. By the time the players shook hands the spinners had been bowling for some time and the contest had been drifting peacefully towards sleep.None of which made the game hugely less watchable for the spectators at Trent Bridge, many of whom had sat quiet and intent in the same spots for most of the four days. Rather like the young cowboy in the song by James Taylor – the American singer, not the Nottinghamshire batsman, you understand – these folk have spent months “waiting for summer, their pastures to change”.They probably relished the intensity of the cricket in the morning session when Will Gidman was caught behind off a quite beautiful Steven Patterson delivery which moved away from him and when the batsman James Taylor hooked Will Rhodes to the substitute Moin Ashraf at long leg and departed for a determined 125-minute 35.That wicket left Nottinghamshire on 134 for 5 but Patel and Riki Wessels prevented any further breakthroughs being made until deep in the afternoon session when the two of them were out within seven overs of each other. First, Patel nicked seamer Will Rhodes to Hodd when he had rather cruised to 76 and then Wessels feathered a cut off Jack Leaning’s offspin. Hodd did the necessary once again. If Gale had then hung on to a very difficult one-handed chance at cover offered by Read’s drive when the Nottinghamshire man was only 14, Jack Brooks would have another wicket and we may now be reviewing a frenetic climax. As it was, though, the game drifted away in what the famous Pogue, Philip Chevron, once described as “the death of afternoon”. Those spectators stayed, though, as might oil on canvas, until the players trooped off. Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire members have spent dark evenings “thinking about batsmen and glasses of beer”. They are determined not to miss a moment of the glad season. The caravans move on. Nottinghamshire now travel to Hampshire while Yorkshire host Warwickshire on Sunday. Gale’s men will have to do so without Adil Rashid, the county’s request to have the legspinner released from England’s tour to the West Indies having been turned down. Director of cricket Martyn Moxon admitted that he was “disappointed” by the decision.

Finn, Anderson run through India

A year after he had gone back home from Brisbane, midway during the Ashes tour, Steven Finn’s five-for set up a big England win

‘Unselectable’ Finn becomes unstoppable

It was here in the nets at the Gabba a year and four days ago that Steven Finn couldn’t land the ball on the strip. He was fatigued and down on confidence. He was offered an early leave from what was a trying tour of Australia. He took the offer. In the match that followed, an England attack lacking a tall bowler helplessly saw James Faulkner pull of a heist with No. 11 for company.A year and three days later, Finn announced his comeback to top-flight cricket with a maiden five-for that ripped apart India’s batting order after they had recovered from a shaky start. Finn’s charge turned 1 for 57 into 5 for 67, and 5 for 137 into 153, their lowest all-out score against England. That after India had decided to bat on a hard Gabba surface only to be undone by the extra bounce on the pitch. Ian Bell helped England chase the target down in 27.3 overs, claiming the crucial bonus point and a big net run rate boost.India had to contend with inauspicious news just before the match. Their centurion from the MCG ODI, Rohit Sharma, had to pull out with a sore hamstring, which meant Ajnikya Rahane was required to fill in as opener again. It is, however, the other opener that has been India’s problem on this tour. Against a rejuvenated and accurate James Anderson, who was returning from injury himself, Shikhar Dhawan stood no chance. It only seemed a matter of time that Anderson would get one right and Dhawan would nick off. It happened the first time Anderson bowled to Dhawan. By the time Anderson finished the over in which Dhawan got out, his figures read 2-2-0-1.Rahane and Ambati Rayudu – the replacement for Rohit – batted edgily but stayed together for 12 overs, adding 56 runs. They had seen off the threat of Anderson and scored well against Stuart Broad, who didn’t seem to be at his most intense. There were no easy runs on offer, though. The two had to repeatedly leave their crease to try to put the England bowlers off their lengths, but they succeeded too infrequently. When Rahane tried to do the same to Finn, the ball got too big, and the inevitable top edge appeared.Virat Kohli, who for some reason has given up the No. 3 slot despite having been the best ODI No. 3 in the world, soon edged to the keeper, playing a nothing dab despite the presence of a slip. Finn’s extra bounce again did the trick. Kohli’s movement deep into the crease just before Finn had delivered hinted at desperation, at how difficult scoring runs had been.Steven Finn was back at his menacing best•Getty ImagesSuresh Raina, who scored a half-century in Melbourne to rescue India, provided a reminder of how difficult India had found Moeen Ali in the English summer, walking past an offbreak. The movement out of the crease again came too early. Soon Rayudu, too, failed to handle Finn’s bounce as he looked to run one down to third man.India had lost four wickets in the space of 27 deliveries, but MS Dhoni and Stuart Binny – playing in the place of R Ashwin – stalled the momentum with a 70-run partnership. Binny ended up with the top score of 44. Yet when India called for the Powerplay one over before the mandatory 36th over, they were staring at Finn and Anderson again. With the field coming in, the singles dried up, and Finn conceded just the one run in the 35th over. Anderson dropped a return offering from Dhoni first ball into his second spell but, conceding just a single, he ensured the pressure was on.Finn came back to clean Dhoni up with a bouncer that was gloved to the keeper. Next ball he moved round the wicket to burst through the defence of Akshar Patel, who now has two ducks in two innings in Australia. Bhuvneshwar Kumar avoided the hat-trick, but couldn’t save the top of his off stump from Anderson in the next over. Two good catches – by Eoin Morgan running back from mid-off and by Moeen circling under a swirling ball at the edge of the midwicket boundary – ended the Indian innings in a hurry.India’s innings ended so early England got six overs to bat before the supper break. It was time enough for Bell to get off to a fluent start even as Moeen fell to a slower ball from Binny, who opened the innings. The rest of the innings was all about Bell stylishly knocking off the runs and Binny getting an extended spell possibly as India’s endeavour to test him out now that the match was lost. For some time it seemed Bell could get to a century even in the meagre chase, but it was too fanciful a thought. Bell finished with an unbeaten 88 off 91 balls, James Taylor got a third ODI fifty, and the match was over even before it got dark in Brisbane. After one round of matches, England sat second in the triangular with five points, behind Australia’s nine.
